The door creaks ominously and a shadow emerges on the marble floor as the dim-lit hallway casts its light on the man who went inside of Morrigan’s room. His heavy footsteps echoing inside the grand room as he approaches the young princess who cried herself to sleep for another night. Morrigan is tucked in bed with her blankets cocooning her, the young princess hugging herself as the warmth of the duvet gives comfort to her aching heart.

His hand adorned with golds and diamond rings reached out to the innocent face of the young princess caressing it lightly. The cold jewelry kisses Morrigan’s skin, making her shiver. Morrigan shifted and tucked herself further under her duvet but the man who approached her trapped her. Both his arms on either side of her head, gawking at the young princess' soft and delicate features.

“Can you tell me your name?” Morrigan inquired as she stared at the eyes of the child. Those eyes are dark and blank, almost lifeless. A gaze that is all familiar to her. The child didn’t respond to her but instead reached out for a handheld mirror ornate with pearls. “Can you understand me?” She asked. The child looked at her and nodded, after that brief nod the child went back to appreciate the details in the mirror. “Can you talk?” This time even though the child didn’t look at her it timidly nodded its head.“Can you tell me your name?” She repeated her inquiry earlier, the child’s eyes went to her. The child whispered something under her breath that Morrigan couldn’t decipher. She heaved a sigh and sat beside the child. She watches as the child continues to stare at the mirror. “Do you like it?” The

“Thank you, Your Majesty…” An elder bowed his head as he received a bag of food and clothes that Morrigan personally handed him. Morrigan’s heart sank as she watches these elders from the borders that braved the unbearable heat just to have food that will fill their stomachs and water that will quench their thirst. They didn't mind how frail their bodies are right now because of the drought that hit them. She couldn't help but bit the insides of her cheeks as she studies the situation at the border. "What we brought is barely enough," she muttered under her breath. Even with the objection of some ministers, Morrigan decided to use the stocked up food from the granary to answer the relief operations to the borders but she didn't expect that despite the fact that they used up some of the goods stocked in the granary it will still be enough on how big the effects of the drought to the borders.

“You seem to be deep in your thoughts…” Morrigan looked at Colfre’s eyes through their reflection on the mirror. She couldn't help but fidget with her fingers that are now resting on her vanity. She noticed that Colfre wasn’t wearing his flexible armor, only his black inner clothes that hugged his physique. He has his arms crossed in front of his chest, staring intently at her. Even he was studying her. “You’ve been lost in your thoughts ever since we traveled back from the border, what is it that's bothering you?” Morrigan closed her eyes and heaved a deep sigh, she let the train of thoughts that had been bothering her come together for her to calm down. When she opened her eyes it drifted to the family portrait displayed in her room. Her eyes soften as she stares at the portrait. “All of you are dismissed, Colfre you stay,” she ordered to all the guards and maids waiting for her. The maids bowed and leave her room. After

  • Morrigan   CHAPTER TEN

Morrigan scribbled on a parchment laid in front of her as the back of her tutor face her, reciting to her about the history of Hymir. Her eyes are drooping down as she fights the urge to sleep and could only sigh silently as she keeps her yawn down.“Your Highness, are you still listening to me?” Morrigan sat upright when her tutor called her attention, suddenly waking her soul that almost drifted to the land of dreams. Morrigan bit the insides of her cheeks and with a mischievous smile scratched her head. Her tutor went to her desk and saw random scribbles of words, a drawing of supposedly a crow and a dove, a few scribbles of flowers, and in the middle were her lecture when her class started. Her tutor couldn’t help but pinch the bridge of his nose. “Your Highness, I know that studying this is something you will think is a waste of time but in the future, you will be the ruler of this kingdom, you should know these things like the back

  • Morrigan   CHAPTER ELEVEN

Morrigan slid her fingers to trace the crow encrusted on the locket. Her smile had been plastered to her lips all day as she stares at the locket. Mesmerized by the details that the locket has. “You seem to have grown fond of that locket your betrothed gave you, Your Highness.” Morrigan looked at Lydia, her wet nurse and nanny, who went inside of her room with a tray of fresh clothes for her to change into. Lydia noticed how the princess had been staring at it with a glint of intrigue in her eyes.“What do you think is inside of this locket, Lydia?” She asked her voice full of curiosity, she had been staring and studying the locket for a whole afternoon since it was handed to her by Lord Toiba. She suddenly looked away from the locket and her eyebrow shot up. “What do you think Colum looks like? Does he take after his father or does he take after his mother, but unfortunately, I have never seen Lord Toiba’s wife because she wa

Morrigan twirled around showing her dress to Lydia, she giggled as she dances with her every step and twirl. “What do you think, Lydia?” Morrigan ecstatically asked Lydia, however, it seems that Lydia is deep in her thoughts. Morrigan noticed that Lydia was zoning out and didn’t really heed any attention to her. Lydia was only staring at the marble floor, her face sullen. “What are you thinking?” Lydia jumped from shock, her eyes met Morrigan's worried eyes. Morrigan blinked twice and put her hand on Lydia’s forehead. “You’re not sick, are you not feeling well? Why do you look like you’re in deep thoughts?” She asked innocently. Lydia knows that even if she says something against the king's cousin she will need concrete evidence to back up her claims. Ever since the day she saw the duke having an illicit tryst with a palace maid she had grown cautious, whenever she encounters the duke she veers out of the way and dare not l

  • Morrigan   CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The darkness of the night passes by, the fire that swallowed the east wing of the palace finally died down but the sound of the bells and drums echoing throughout the kingdom remains. Everyone bowed down facing the palace. As the golden rays of the sun slowly touch its tall walls as the sun rises, kissing the now cold and gloomy palace its warmth, welcoming a new day with the news of the beloved King and Queen's and the younger princess's deaths, whilst the crown princess had gone missing while the palace was in chaos last night had already spread throughout the kingdom like it was brought by the wind to whisper from ear-to-ear. The once lively kingdom turned silent as the bells and drums announcing the demise of a beloved leader sounded. • Morrigan   CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The hallway of the palace is unusually silent, no guards are on rotation, nor maids pacing the long hallway. The night is as silent as the usually busy hallway, not a glint of stars twinkling at the dark night sky, and the moon is cloaked by the shrouds of dark clouds. The clicking of Morrigan's footsteps on the marble floor of the palace echoes around the hallway. No light nor sconces were lit up, only the light that comes from outside shone in the hallway, no one can see the end of the hallway like it was an endless road to an abyss. Morrigan looked around her finding her lost in the place she knew like the back of her hand. She stopped from walking the endless palace hallway and stood there, clenching her hands, grabbing a fistful of her skirts. She closed her eyes, trying to calm the growing fear inside of her. Fear that when she opened her eyes she will still be lost in this hal
