And the next morning, they were off. Beating the early crowd which always occupied the cobbled streets and merchants who arrive early to sell their wares to the travelers for an exorbitant fee. The capital was a big place but what made it bigger were the other villages that was set up around the capital, there by adding to the capital might and forming a hub of business activities which interlinked one part to the other. Most people often made the mistake of referring to it all as the capital but it wasn't, each of these villages were under districts which was under a noble and then the king. The reason why Vallas was running away from the capital was because the capital itself is a district and under the control of the Prime Minister unless the Emperor interferes and that was something which the man rarely did. He needed to leave the clutches of the man who had something out for him.
"Nervous." Vallas asked Penelope from beside her, he had been watching her just as she had been watching the passing scenery.
"No. Just mystified by everything which I am seeing." Penelope didn't take her eyes off the window. What she had said was the truth but it was also true that when she started to stare out of the window, she had already calculated the distance it would take for her to fling herself out if she needed to make a quick escape.
"Not even nervous about being in a carriage with a man who knows that you are a woman." Vallas jokes but Penelope didn't crack a smile at his words, he was trying to get a rise out of her but if there was something about Penelope which people didn't know was that she doesn't get caught off guard often if not at all.
"You don't see me as a woman. The closest you relate me to being a female is as a pawn and you know I am more worthy to you as a man because then I can be your biggest weapon, You seem like the type who prefer business before pleasure no matter what persona you put on to deceive others."
Vallas eyes widening was the only sign that betrayed his shock. "You seem to think you can read me very well." And he was really shock at the girl in front of him, she had correctly examined him, something which full grown men hasn't being able to do and yet this girl who was barely on the cusp of womanhood just did that. Vallas was feeling warmer to the idea of having Penelope by his side.
"No, I don't think I can read you, I just know the situation and it is the only reason why I feel safe with you." Penelope replied when she felt the smallest change in the man, he could be that he didn't like the fact that she could come to that conclusion easily so she was trying to make him feel better.
"You are full of surprises Penn. Do you want to change the name? Something more exotic which will fit your status and face perfectly, we can even make up a story about your origin, what do you think?" Vallas asks Penelope who shook her head.
"It will serve as a reminder, so I want to leave it besides we should stick to the truth as close as possible."
"Reminder of what?" Vallas asked intrigued, Penelope way of seeing things always seem to leave him reeling because she looks at things for an angle which nobody thought to look at it from.
"That I am a woman, and also of the bastard who put me on this journey. His very original nickname for me was Penn. I call myself that so that I will never forget what he did to me or what I did to him in return." And just as Vallas had suspected, her words left him reeling. Who decides to call herself something that reminds her of her terrible crime and the reason why she could not return home?
The girl in front of him, that who. Vallas was barely keeping still on his chair, he couldn't wait to see the way in which the girl in front of him influence the resistance. She will rise up the ranks in no time.
"What is your real name?" Vallas asked.
"Penelope." Penelope replied.
Vallas nodded. "You are right, Penelope no longer fits you, Penn is better."
"And why do you think that?" Penelope asked with a half smirk on her lips, she was expecting something general, a speech on how she is now seen as a man and all.
"Penelope represents a woman filled with dreams and hopes, a flower in the middle of a bloom and some random girl. Penn is unique, he is a warrior who knows life, has seen and tasted the sour taste of it. who has reveled in it and beaten down by it yet he is still not broken Penn has seen the darkness in life doing the worst it possibly can and is still not afraid of it. He is a warrior and a weapon, a mighty sword that will devour his enemies and can die for the cause he believes in." Vallas explains as Penelope smirk died on her face as her features turned gaunt with worry, it was still a speech on her being a man now but it was different, more intense and it sounded like there was no happiness in this for her.
"I am neither of those." Penn tells Vallas who smiled, his eyes filled with promises of how she will turn into Penn when he was done with her and his words proved it.
"Not yet." Vallas added. "But you will be under my tutelage."
The carriage rolled to a stop as Vallas frowned. "What is going on?"
"Sire, the road is blocked. By the Prime minister men." One of Vallas men said closed to the window as Vallas frown became fiercer, he knew something like this might happen but he didn't actually think that Cain was dumb enough to do it, especially since he knows that Vallas will not give up Penn.
"That man keeps exercising power he doesn't have." He said as he threw the door of the carriage open and came down, the picture of calm. Penelope watched the man who had become her father as he handled people who had the power to enforce laws but couldn't do anything but cower at the sight of him.
"Problem gentlemen?"
"Pardon me My lord for stopping your carriage but we have information of a stowaway in your vehicle."
"Rest assured, anybody in my carriage is invited by me to be there and thus, isn't a stowaway." Vallas replied as the captain looked lost at words.
"But sire… the person is not supposed to leave the city."
"Why? Was he in jail or committed any crime?" Vallas asked.
"No really but he shouldn't get to leave, it was not approved and…"
"Last time I checked, anybody can chose to leave the capital at any time he or she so desires so why am I being harassed in the middle of my journey home?" Vallas tone changes from easy going to hard as nails within seconds. "Don't make me an enemy, guard."
"Of course not." The man replied with a gulp which Penelope could hear from the carriage where she was trying hard to stifle her laughter.
"Good, now be a good man and let me through without wasting any more of my time." Vallas ordered and smiled when the guard scrambled to obey his command. He turned to enter the carriage back, he stopped and spoke over his shoulders without turning to face those his message was going to. "Tell the person who put you up to this little stunt that his message has been received and that if he does try to harass me ever again, he will have a very determined enemy to deal with." With those words, he entered the carriage and saw Penelope struggling not to laugh. "Glad I could amuse you."
"The pleasure is all mine." Penelope tilted her head in a form of delicate feminine bow which made Vallas to cringe and Penelope to laugh out loud.
"Please, let's not try to do that again."
"Accepted." Penelope agreed.
When the carriage stopped again, it was in front of a compound. "Say hello to your new home." Vallas said but Penelope looked back at the direction which the carriage came from instead. Once she goes into that building, Penelope no longer exists, just one person do and that person is Penn.
"Hello." Penelope finally said when she turned her gaze to the compound in front of her as the huge doors began to creak open.
She and Vallas entered the compound on foot, following the guards who were on horses and driving the carriage.
"My Lord, you are back." A big lady who wore a dirty apron over her shapeless gown which still didn't disguise her bountiful body rushed to hug Vallas whose eyes crinkled with mirth at the greeting.
"Leda, I brought a new member for our household." Vallas pointed out Penelope who hung back when the woman had rushed forward.
"Role?" Leda asked sizing up Penelope with her eyes just like Penelope was sizing her too.
"My Heir." Vallas replied as Leda broad shoulders jerked in surprise.
"Welcome boy, what do you go by?" Leda asked firmly when she got over her shock.
"My name… is Penn."
The next morning, Penn was awake, dressed and ready to take on the world when her door opened with a bang."Good, you are awake." A taller buffer boy strode into the room without knocking. "My name is Stanley and I am going to show you around today."Without acknowledging the presence in the room, Penn continued with putting her new shoes on. She would need to see Vallas later so they can make plans about how they would go about achieving her mission."Hey." The tone of the boy, Stanley turns sharp. "You have no right to ignore me.""Get Out." Penn said instead."Excuse me?" the boy questioned."Go out. Close my door, knock, wait for an invitation then come in." Penn said as Stanley stared at him. "Do you want to keep gaping at me or do you want to get this ridiculous chore over with so we can go about our lives and not see each other again."Stanley snapped his jaw closed so hard that she could
"And here is the meeting room, it has been empty for a while but I don't suppose it would be empty for much longer since Master will send missives to tell his friends he now has an heir and visitors will start visiting, most of them will be entertained here." Agnes explained but Penn thoughts wasn't in the explanation. It was on the words Leda used in ushering him away from the kitchen, Stanley was her son? And Penn had just used her large mouth to bad talk the second most powerful person in the compound son and probably the most deadly."Sir… Our tour is over." Agnes said softly laying a hand on Penn chest and batting her eyes at her but Penn ignored the gesture. He had bigger things to think about than trying to decipher the meaning behind the rapid eye blinking the girl was doing that was making her look weird. Penn jerked at the contact, she didn't like to be touched by those she didn't know but still she smiled. "Of course.
Penn opened the door to the meal hall which suddenly went quiet as she entered but the silence didn't unfazed her, instead she took wide strides to the man table where she sat down besides Vallas and opened the dishes before her. Vallas continued his conversation with his trainers while Penn listened with half attention. It was a while after that before conversations resumes it flow in the room.Penn started to pay attention when she heard her name from Vallas in passing words. "…will need Weapons training and a training in subterfuge and in Lessons on behavior."At the last words, Penn snorted and when Vallas looked at her, she asked. "What am I? a girl? Why do I need lessons as if I am going to be wooing suitors?"Vallas removed his eyes from Penn own because he knew the exact questions Penn was asking. "That attitude of yours is one of the reasons why you need those lessons.""No." Penn
"Young master, you cannot run away from your lessons." Rima says searching for Penn who was on a low branch of the tree closed to her quarters, eating an apple and watching her behavior teacher face slowly getting red with anger. There were few things which Penn got to like about her new life and one of them was getting on Rima neck and watching her lose her cool. The girl was too composed and straight laced for someone who was young. Even Master Vallas was more carefree than her. Penn paused that thought. Master was on a class all on his own. He was even more carefree than Penn herself."Penn, this is not funny." Rima stomps her foot on the ground. "I can't keep losing you, what will do you think that your father will do if I tell him that you keep escaping from your lectures? I will be sent away and that will bring discredit to my father since he was the one who actually suggested that I should be your teacher." Her eyes filled with t
Since Penn agreed to ignore the actions of Stanley, Rima had been lost in thoughts. Penn was a better man that Stanley was. He was kind, considerate and loyal to those he cared about, all qualities she was looking for in a husband. And it also helped that Penn was easy on the eyes. His beauty rivals hers and she was the girl. His brown mop of hair he never bothers to care about, framed his face in unruly cuts, something she had learnt that he did himself with a sharp knife. His face although it was shaped like a woman, there was nothing womanly about Penn. His eyes were hard, that of a man who had seen things in life. Enough things to haunt him but he refused to let them get to him, Penn spirit shone bravely from his eyes. His nose was a little crooked from being broken multiple times but they added to his appeal. His body was a bit on the slim side…not racking up muscles like other boys but he was muscular enough and people rarely know of his sl
"What is this I am hearing about you losing your temper to hit Master Rodas daughter?" Vallas said as a mode of greeting the moment he stormed into his heir room. His heir was lying on the floor and staring at the ceiling and when Vallas growled in anger at the lack of response from the child. "What I am talking to you child, look at me and pay me the respect I deserve."Penn released a sigh as she slowly sat up and struggled not to let her face pull up into a grimace because she knew that Vallas was watching her. She had to be careful not to show enough of what she is feeling because nothing much gets to escape her master notice. If she could pull off this deceit, she would count herself as lucky."Sorry sire, what?" Penn snaps at Vallas who frowned at the temper shown by his ward and also the title which his ward had not used in a long while."Why did you hit a friend of yours, what on earth possessed y
“What do you mean that Penn is taking the blame for Stanley?” Vallas fury filled the room.“Apparently, Leda told Penn to try and look out for Stanley then the idiot decided to accost Penn in town and beat him then when my daughter tried to step in, Stanley turned his fury on her.” Rodas explains as he watched Vallas pace around in anger.“Unbelievable… so that was what the little brat was hiding.” Vallas was clearly angry but also he was amazed by Penn decision. Choosing to take the blame for someone who despised him and whom he hates just because he made the person’s mother a promise. That left him humbled. Penn was raised by good people to be able to do something which he himself would have never been able to do. “I am tempted to leave him there just because of his fool hardy behavior.”“Him being able to do something
Penn returned to the compound to see Rima waiting impatiently for her.“I have half a mind to order your disassociation from her.” Vallas said in the middle of his conversation with Penn as Penn frowned at him.“Why? What have we done?” Penn asked.“It isn’t as a result of what you have done but what you will do and have already started doing to her.” Vallas corrected.“Speak plainly Master, I have not hurt Rima in any way and I would never allow her to get hurt in my presence.”“Hurt is inevitable, especially for those who we care about.”“There is no possible way for me to hurt her.” Penn said after thinking about it as the carriage rolled to a stop. Hurt Rima who was her only friend would be a foolish thing to do and she knew this and she wouldn’t be able to hurt Rima in any way, she actually liked the girl and Rima represented a sense of normalcy to her.
Penn tried to run but there was no way she could escape the grasp of twenty men, she was caught within a minute. “Let me go.” She struggled against their hold as she was dragged back to Cain who had not moved from his spot when she had tried to run, fully trusting in his men's capability in bringing her back. “My father will hear of this.” “And how will he, when the person who should tell him will be dead?” Cain said as Penn felt a chill in her spine at his words. Cain had just confirmed that he was going to kill her and there was nothing she could do about it at all. “My father will know that it is you.” Penn bravely said but her voice betrayed her when it came out shaky, displaying her fear for all present to see. Cain leans to her face. “He is going to need something called proof to be able to do anything. You see, unlike that incident of two years ago, this time I will be smarter so that no one can witness this happening. Let us go.” Cain said
Penn watched the carriages stop as soon as he came down from his own carriage with Rima still inside and wondered if Vallas had visitors which she was not warned about? She had just came back with Rima for a trip in town, for a few days they have been here with Vallas as Something had gotten the resistance leaders so worked up that they were requesting for their heirs to be close to them.Penn sighed, someone would think that since Penn was at home that means that she would at least have an idea about what was going on but when she had asked Vallas, he shrugged and informed her that he does not know anything about what was happening. And when she asked him why he had called her home, the crazy man just replied that he did not want his heir to be the only one remaining especially when they have drawn the others back.Penn admit that Vallas's heart was in the right place but most time she felt like she would strangle Vallas.
“Your majesty, I have the perfect idea for what you want to happen.” Cain said two days later in the king's study. The king stared at Cain in surprise, he had not seen Cain this excited since he decided to start punishing the resistance. “I am not sure that I will like this idea.” The king responded.Reflected on Cain's face was the confusion which Cain felt as he did not understand what the reaction of the king. He did not plan for the king to shut him down even before hearing what he had in his mind. “My King, You did not even listen to what I have to say.”“I know.” The king sighed as he dropped the reports he was perusing. “I just hope that it will not waste my time.”“Of course not your majesty sire, I will be very brief with my explanation.” Cain hurried out and when the King gave his nod of approval, Cain started. “You wanted the children o
The crowd was somber, most of the nobles who attended the burial of Denzel attended with the knowledge of why he died, some more than the others.*He angered the resistance so he was killed, His son was discovered as a member of the resistance so they shut him up, he was killed because his son was a traitor…*Those were few of the talks that were flying in the air at that time. The time were Denzel was being laid in the ground and that made the king teeth to grit in anger at the blatant disrespect shown to the noble who died and his living nobles who could not wait for them to be out of the hearing range of the young ones which Denzel left behind before running their mouth. The only persons who were observing the right curtsey was Vallas and his son Penn. The king watched as Vallas placed a comforting hand on Penn's arm and then led him off.“Father.” Chandler called to his father who turned around to con
Penn felt something akin to pity as she watched Denzel stumbling back as if him shifting away from Vallas would somehow make the news unreal and change the fact that Curtis was dead.“No, you are lying. Is this some sick joke you and him are playing to make me lose my cool?” Denzel demanded but Penn could see the pale pallor that Denzel skin seem to have taken.“Not everything is about you Denzel, Your son was a traitor, this is about his death which was caused by his actions and decisions not yours.” Vallas stated as Penn paused.“Of course, he was your son.” Penn realized.“Stop referring to him like he is no more.” Denzel snapped at Penn who shifted back. “Now enough of this game you are playing and tell me where my son is.”“He is dead Denzel.” Penn stated calmly, trying to add feelings into delivering the news. “He was a traitor
Cain had never felt any intense hate for anybody as much as he felt for this brat in front of him. Even what he felt for Vallas was like a tiny flame compare to the inferno he was feeling for this being called Penn.“Are you sure you want to go there?” Cain asked Penn not caring for the audience they were having which was the king and his family.“You brought this upon yourself and let me inform you, my father will hear about this.” Penn threatened.“Is it just me or this whole scene turning into something that is just wasting our time?” The queen asked the king who nodded.“Cain you know better than to bring your personal vendetta here.” The king said firmly as Cain looked around unsure of how the table turned so quickly.“But…” Cain tried to convince the king but Chandler's voice was the one to cut him short this time.“But no
“Did the Prince give you a blow to the head that I somehow did not see?” Stanley asked Penn who rolled her eyes.“I am serious, those who run will be the first to be captured and taken in for questioning. Dispose all your weapons here and let’s go trade the horses for a wagon then rent a night at the inn and after that, we go out and mingle with other in the crowd, maybe grab a wench or two per person and have fun. After all, the reason we are here is because Lord Vallas decided to visit our home and we need to release some steam right?”They looked surprised at the easy way which Penn solved the problem until Stanley clapped his arms together. “Alright, let us start, time currently is of the essence.” He started giving instructions to others about what they should do while Penn started undressing. “Penn is everything alright?” Stanley asked looking at Penn weirdly.“Of course, it woul
Curtis realized too late what the queen might have wanted, the woman replaced her husband with her son, and she would not have done that if she wanted to son to be alive. With that thought, Curtis lunged forward, hoping to sink the knife into the Prince's chest but the Prince disarmed him within a flash.“Thank you for the weapon. Needed it.” Chandler smiled at Curtis who backed away from the Prince in shock.“That is one of the most foolish you have ever done.” Penn growled at Curtis making her voice deeper so that the Prince will not realize that it was her and still she saw the way the Prince's body jerked at her voice like he was recognized who was talking. It was a good thing that Penn tied her head and covered half of her face just like the rest of the resistance.“Thank you for believing in my ability, it is nice when your enemies know what you are capable of.” Chandler grinned towards the direction of
“I think you need to start from the start.” The queen said with her chest pounding. The king could not die, not yet. She still needed to kill the crown prince and make Lance the crown Prince. This was all Cain fault, if he had killed the prince then she would not have felt anything, she would not have done anything other than to sit still and wait for this to happen but it cannot because she will be left with Nothing. The Crown Prince no longer listened to her anymore, not since he came back to realized how many people she had disposed of since his edict. He had refused to listen to her since then or even to be in the same room with her, claiming that the sight of her makes him sick and he was repulsed that she was his mother… that was what he said while he was in the king’s presence but the queen knew what Chandler was referring to.“The resistance are planning on attacking the king today and Curtis shared this
