Fern

The first couple of days I feel like an idiot. I feel as if everything I do is wrong, and I’m convinced I’m going to do the long thing and kill Riley! Then finally, thanks to the guidance of Isabella, the omega and Jack, I start to get it right.

I notice the different kinds of cries and I actually love taking time to just sit there and watch him sleep. Riley is slowly spending more time awake and, at first, I wasn’t entirely sure what to do with him then. I also wasn’t really sure what to do with myself when he was asleep.

Days soon turn into weeks and before long the forty days are up. I wouldn’t say that I love Riley yet. I won’t say that I feel like his mother, but I have grown incredibly fond of the little ball of smush. Riley is a real fat and happy little guy.

He is my little ball of smush and when nobody is around, I love blowing bubbles on his tummy and making him laugh. I love watching him sleep. I just love having him in our home and after forty days are up, I can’t imag

It gives you what you really need and after our little girl, Esme, is born, it feels as if our family is complete. The first couple of years are stormy as we navigate teething babies and terrible twos. Just as we think it’s safe, they hit puberty and soon after they become terrible teenagers! Riley knows that I’m not his biological momma, but we are both okay with what we are. Mother and son.Neither of us blames the other for anything. We have always just been mother and son. Riley and Esme are siblings and boy do they act like it sometimes. I swear I can get whiplash because of their moods. One day they are so close that you would swear they are twins. The next you have to physically pull them apart before they hurt each other. I’m relieved when Riley shifts on his sixteenth birthday. I never said it out loud, but I was worried there for a l

EsmeMy heart sinks. I didn’t think she would follow me! I was sure they were asleep. My parents were ancient. They always went to bed early, and then I had the run of the house! As I turn in the water, I note my dad and that just breaks my heart while my friends are still trying to scatter.Unfortunately, my parents aren’t the only ones there and as I make my way through the water to the little beach, I note how even Jason is being dragged back. I can’t believe he ran! He left me here to face the music alone. As I get out, I see my friends glaring at me, but what hurts most is the way Jason is glaring at me. I didn’t do this on purpose, but indirectly, I’ve betrayed my friends. My life is ruined all because my mom wouldn’t just let it be. All because she wouldn’t let me just have some fun.“It’s days like these that I wish I gave you more than one name!” She growls as I wrap a towel around me. I can’t look up. I can’t see the disappointment in my dad’s eyes. But worse is that I can’t

EsmeIn the morning, I walk down the passage at school toward my locker and I can feel everyone gossiping about me. I don’t have to hear what they are saying to know that it’s not good. Sadly, I used to be one of them. It’s really not nice to be on the other side of this. I never actually thought about how it has to feel until right now. It’s almost as if the people we were talking about weren’t real people. I sigh as I reach my locker. Opening it, I stuff my books inside and close my eyes for a moment.“Hey, it’s strange to be back here and think we are going to have to spend the entire day here.” Jason stands behind me and I look at him only for a second. I was sure he would never speak to me again.“Listen, I’m really sorry. I didn’t think my parents would make sure an enormous thing about this.” I grab my books for my first class and slam my locker shut before turning to look at him. Jason leans over me and takes a step closer and smiles.“Oh, you are going to pay for that.” His w

EsmeIn the morning, I get up and grab a piece of toast and a sip of juice before I rush out of the house. I normally have breakfast with my parents and almost get to school late, but I just don’t feel like chit-chatting with them at the moment.Besides, I have to get to the library before the first period. I rush into the building and put my stuff down while I search for a specific book. Once I find it, I take a seat and start to make the notes that I need. I put the book down on the reception desk on my way out.I don’t see the foot the moment I walk out, and I go flying again. All around me people are laughing and pointing and all I can think of is if this is the best they have! I get up and grab my things before they get trampled and, without looking back, I rush to get to my locker.“Poor little beta’s girl. She can’t even walk properly.” Jason’s voice echoes down the passage and I roll my eyes. I stuff my things in my locker and slam them shut before glaring at him.“Ah, are you

EsmeMy parents' common sense made absolutely no sense to me at all. I’m grounded and can only go to school and am supposed to come right back home, and then they tell me that I’m skipping school so that I can visit my uncle and discuss my birthday. How on earth do they expect me to follow any rules if they can’t follow the rules themselves?! I have no choice but to meet with my uncle. I follow my parents to his house feeling worse than I did on that night that we were caught.I can feel the eyes on me as we pass pack members. I can’t hear what they are saying, but I can hear them whispering. I nearly laugh out loud when I realize that grown-ups aren’t that different from teenagers. They also gossip like we do.They also bully others like we do. They just call it something different and find creative ways to explain it all away. As we walk into the house, I catch my uncle and aunt’s scents and I wish I didn’t have to be there. We are shown to my uncle’s office and my heart skips a bea

EsmeAll the girls find dresses, but because of my mood, I don’t find one. After my aunt pays, they send everyone else home and my mom and aunt get into our car. We pull out of the parking spot in the small town and I look out of the window at the scenery rushing by.It’s late Friday afternoon, and I’m looking forward to a weekend alone in my doorless room. I plan how I’m going to avoid all the party planning going on at home and only notice that we aren’t going home when we pull onto the freeway.“Where are we going?” I turn my attention to the two women in front of the car, and they look far too amused for my liking.“Your mother and I agreed that none of the dresses in town were fit for a beta female’s eighteenth birthday. We are glad that you didn’t find something you liked because now we can take you to the city to find something special.” My aunt sounds excited and I roll my eyes.I don’t want to tell them that no dress will be able to save my reputation. EsmeIn the morning, I get up before my parents and walk out the door just as the sun rises over the ridge. I left a note on the dining room table to let them know that I’ve gone to the library to do some research for school. Now that the alpha order has been lifted, I can leave whenever I want again.I don’t know how my cancelling the party is going to affect our punishment, so I plan on getting as much use out of my freedom as I can before they lock us up again. The school is still locked up when I get there and I find my tree.I sit and read through some of my notes and, half an hour later, I see the janitor opening the side door. I rush over and ask him to please let me in. He doesn’t want to at first, but eventually does. I walk into the library, and he switches on the lights for me.A couple of minutes later, I’m walking down one of the aisles to find the book I have been looking for. I have decided to just get through the rest of this year and get my high school diploma so that

That took some doing according to him. Some of the others haven’t even started yet.” Mom frowns at me as I walk into my room and she follows me.“Well, they aren’t my friends anymore, so you don’t have to worry mom. I’m not going to fall back into trouble and all that. I still have some work to get done before tomorrow.” I walk over to my desk and point at my books.“Esme, we are trying to tell you that we are proud of you.” My dad looks disappointed, and I feel awful, but I can’t help it. The words just slip out of my mouth. I nod to avoid saying something awful again, and I’m relieved when they leave. The moment they close my door, I jump up and open it again. I don’t want them to think that I’m sneaking out. I finish my homework and take a shower before going to bed. The days just flow into each other after that,

  • Moonlit Betrayals   Chapter 110 - An amazing start of two new lives.

EsmeOver the coming weeks, the gossip about Jason and Camile eventually die down as life at the pack house becomes very busy. It’s Gabriel’s birthday soon, and I want to have a huge party and invite everyone. Literally everyone. My hope is that a celebration will pull everyone out of the slump we’ve all seemed to be in. It’s very rarely that a one pack member kills another, which has kind of forced a dark cloud of depression over our entire county.Gabriel’s birthday finally arrives and everyone seems to be having a good time. I can literally feel the doom and gloom lift as the evening continues and even Gabriel, who very rarely smiles when others are around, is laughing. His birthday party is exactly what we all need, and I can feel it in the air. Once his birthday is over, however, I feel a little lost. There was total chaos while I was trying to arrange everything and now that I spend my time on what are my normal duties as Luna, I find myself wandering around the house aimlessly

  • Moonlit Betrayals   Chapter 109 - A sad ending to two sad lives.

EsmeOver the coming days, there is a lot of back and forth of information, and it’s clear that Jason killed Camile. The only question that nobody seems to be able to answer is why. They didn’t have the perfect friendship, but I just couldn’t see why Jason thought killing Camile would solve anything. The day the trial starts, the square at my old pack house is packed with people wanting to find out what happened. I hear people whispering, and it seems everyone believes that Jason is guilty. It still astounds me that nobody is asking why.I listen to the court case, which is pretty straightforward, and I watch as the video footage they got from us is played. The entire time, Jason keeps his head low and I have to admit, although not out loud, that I’m surprised. He was never the kind of guy to just keep quiet when he was accused of anything. After two days, the trial is over and my cousin announces that he will have his final decision about Jason’s fate in a couple of days.People disp

  • Moonlit Betrayals   Chapter 108 - A horrific morning after ...

EsmeMom and I are in my office discussing my ideas when Gabriel and my dad walk in looking very grim. I frown, tilting my head to one side and wondering what on earth could have gone wrong so early.“Esme, we have some bad news.” Gabriel sighs and then looks at my dad before they sit down in my little lounge area in my office.“Camile is dead, honey.” My dad sounds hesitant, and I just stand there gaping at them like a fish out of water for a moment. “Jason has been arrested.” Shock runs through my body, but deep down, I kind of expected that last part.I sit down beside my mom feeling dizziness suddenly hit. I might not have been that close to them in recent months, but for a long time, they were the only friends I had. I just process what I have been told while my dad gives me the gory details they just heard from my uncle.“We don’t have to go to the funeral if you don’t want to go.” Gabriel sighs when my dad is done, and I just sit there in shock. Mom hands me a drink and I reali

  • Moonlit Betrayals   Chapter 107 - A beautiful night ...

EsmeWe do the rounds and spend just enough time with each group so that nobody will feel left out. The only group I have a problem with is my old friends. The first thing I notice is that Camile isn’t there. I’m not sure if she decided not to come to the ceremony, or if she just isn’t there right now.“We can’t avoid them, my love, but I can make an excuse for you if you like.” Gabriel pulls me closer and kisses my cheek.“No, I want all of them to see how happy I am.” I look into his eyes and smile before we make our way over to the group of people my age. At first, everything is incredibly uncomfortable, but Gabriel has this way of just making people feel comfortable. The only one that doesn’t seem to relax is Jason. He keeps glaring at Gabriel, and I just know that is never going to change. Jason will just have to accept that his mate is a lower-ranked wolf. We don’t stay as long as we did with the other groups and I breathe a sigh of relief as soon as we are away from all of them

  • Moonlit Betrayals   Chapter 106 - Mated.

EsmeThe day of the ceremony isn’t any better! I’m woken in the early hours of the morning and the omegas quickly start to move my things to my new bedroom. I’m a little disappointed when I walk into our room and I can smell that Gabriel had been there just moments ago.It smells of soap and I know he has taken a shower. I really want to see him before the ceremony. I need to see him, but my mom keeps telling me that it’s bad luck. My anxiety slowly builds as the day is spent on waxing and whatever is needed to make me look pretty.Right before I put on my dress, I’m completely freaking out, and I lock myself in the bathroom. My mind is all over the place. I know I want to be with Gabriel. I don’t understand the anxiety all of a sudden. I am sitting on the floor when I hear his footsteps coming closer.“Esme, it’s me.” He softly knocks on the door and I can feel it. The floor was cold, and I hoped that sitting on it would just calm my anxiety a little. I lean against the door and try

  • Moonlit Betrayals   Chapter 105 - The enormous mansion!

Esme“But this house is too big for two people? Where does everyone else stay?” I feel incredibly confused as he climbs the stairs with me in his arms. He stops before the door and looks into my eyes.“It’s big enough for our family. Now, will you give me a moment to welcome you to your new home before the pack arrives.” He grins and I nod. I have a lot of questions, but they can wait for now. He steps over the threshold and I burst out laughing.“Welcome home, my love.” He kisses my forehead and I slowly turn around. I gasp at the sight of it. The house is filled with what looks like only the best. The enormous grand staircase is clearly the centerpiece in the foyer.I note as Gabriel takes me on a tour that the materials used to make the furniture wasn’t cheap. The chairs look like they have been handcrafted out of wood. The cushions are covered in thick lush velvets and the curtains draped in front of the windows look heavy. The bottom floor consists out of the kitchen, a dining ro

Esme“Mom, are you okay with all of this?” I put some of the living room things down on the coffee table while she wraps them and puts them into the box.“All what, honey?” She stops wrapping and frowns at me. I sit down beside her trying to find just the right words. That is really difficult to do when you haven’t gotten along with your mother for most of your life.“Moving to a new pack. Me being mated.” I shrug, hearing the hesitation in my own voice and knowing that she is going to hear it.“Well, honey …” She sits back and studies me for only a moment. “Are you okay with all of this? That is really the big question. None of this makes sense if you aren’t okay with it.” She frowns.“Yeah, I’m okay with it.” A shy smile starts to form, and my cheeks turn bright red.“Then we are all okay with it. The time has come for your brother to take over, which means we won’t have much to do around here.” Mom shrugs and carries on wrapping. “Hey, did you get your robes for graduation yet?” Th

Esme“I … Uhm …” I look from mom to dad to Gabriel, and I’m at a complete loss for words for the first time in my life. Honestly, it’s been nice to have Gabriel there, but I’ve been so focused on just trying to get through the exams that I kind of didn’t think about leaving with Gabriel.“I think we should get through graduation first before any of us make any plans to move.” Gabriel saves the day and I literally breathe a loud sigh of relief, making them all laugh at me. Later in the evening, after dinner, Gabriel and I walk out to the lake.As we get into the cool water, I think how this could be the last time I ever see this lake. I will come to the pack territory to visit my brother, but I can’t imagine us coming here to swim. My next week is going to be filled with finding a dress for graduation and all that, so I can’t see us coming out here.We swim out in silence, each trapped in our thoughts. When Gabriel closes the gap between us, I don’t even notice until he pulls me into h

  • Moonlit Betrayals   Chapter 102 - Jason isn't Camile's mate.

EsmeBefore long, the horrible written exams are over. I’ve fallen into a new routine and have even grown used to having Gabriel in my space literally all the time. He left to check on his pack a couple of times, but he has never been gone for more than two days at a time.Jason and Camile have clearly become closer, and I’ve even heard rumours that they could very well be mates. Camile’s birthday is right in the middle of our physicals, which means my uncle has limited the celebration a little.Gabriel pulls me into his embrace while we wait for Camile to make her entrance. She tried her best to outshine me, but thanks to my uncle, her party isn’t nearly as big as mine was. Camile finally makes her entrance and I shove my face into Gabriel’s chest to cover the laughter as soon as I see her.Camile is dressed in the biggest dress I’ve ever seen. She is wearing an enormous crown, and all I can think is that she doesn’t even realize how ridiculous she looks. Her dad has the hardest time
