ETHAN

I woke up a bit early the next morning and stretched. I had a great night’s sleep which was not always possible, so I welcomed it with arms wide open.

It was common to be pulled out of our sleep because of one issue or another. Having a large pack did that to you. I would not change it for anything though. We had all shed blood and soul for what we had and would never stop. The stress and craziness were worth it.

I tossed on some jeans and a grey tee before heading downstairs to grab some much-needed coffee. My tastebuds were already watering with the smells coming from the kitchen by the time my feet hit the bottom landing.

Mrs. Tyson, the amazing woman that she was, was already dishing up some breakfast casserole that she made. An amazing night’s sleep and her cooking. Winning already.

I grabbed a cup of coffee and sat at the island. Her cooking was the best, as was her personality. Everyone in the pack absolutely loved her.

“Good morning, Beta,” Mrs. Tyson said pleasantly with a smile that never faded over time.

I sighed, sipping my coffee, before raising an eyebrow at her. “How many more years will it take until you just call me Ethan?”

She let out a hearty laugh and set a plate in front of me. She leveled me with a look of amusement that a grandmother would give – one that showed you that they were far more stubborn than the child. I was stubborn alright, but she had me beat hands down.

“It is an honor to be called Beta. So, accept it,” she said with finality.

Mrs. Tyson had been the in-house cook for the packhouse when we were kids. Lots of families lived here then, but we never got back into that once we took over. It would have been a constant reminder of all that we lost. It was easier to push that shit away than deal with it. Not necessarily a healthy coping mechanism, but there were worse ones out there.

Squad One was spread throughout the territory, and all had their own type of packhouse to do with as they wished. They had their own versions of Betas, Gammas, and so forth. It all depended on how they wanted it set up. It was the only way that we could effectively take care of a pack this size.

I knew for a fact that Tyree’s mini packhouse in sector 2 housed his mate and her five brothers and sisters. They did not have any pups yet, but they already had a full house. Since his parents were getting older, they would be moving in before the year was up.

Johnson had a growing family, so the number of occupants in his packhouse was steadily increasing. His mate’s parents also lived with them, but his had been lost in an uprising a few years back. Johnson had both a form of Beta and Gamma. He called them ‘thing one’ and ‘thing two’ behind closed doors.

I personally enjoyed the freedom of our bachelor pad. Mrs. Tyson came by every couple of days with fresh food and leftovers for the two of us. She took over food shopping for us as well because we were typically too busy and would just get takeout if we did not have anything. That and we both loathed food shopping and could not cook to save our lives. We tried once. That was all it took to realize that we should not attempt it again lest we put our entire pack at risk.

The casserole was delicious. It had eggs, vegetables, and plenty of sausage. The food and coffee woke me up, but I groaned with the fact that I had a long day of work ahead of me. We had a meeting this morning, and I had pack duties that would not be done until the moon was up.

I hated long days. With a fucking passion.

I grabbed some files from my office before heading to the War Room for the meeting.

The War Room was one of my favorite rooms in the entire packhouse because I got to design it myself. There was enough tech in the room to make tech moguls cry jealous tears. So much could be accomplished within its walls. The entire territory could be monitored remotely from the room in the event of another emergency.

The entire squad was already present and looked at me expectantly as I entered. Thankfully, I was only ten minutes late. They could really just suck it up because I woke up in a good mood that they could not touch.

“Glad you could finally join us,” Johnson deadpanned.

Johnson’s tone said one thing, but his eyes belied his amusement. I swore he got his daily thrills in teasing everyone. If his mate had not been fated to him, I doubted a woman would come near him with his penchant for assery.

“You would be caught up as well if you had Mrs. Tyson cooking for you. That woman was sent straight from the Goddess. So, what’s the latest?” I asked, taking my seat at the table.

Xander used the computer and massive screen at the front of the table to pull up a map of our territory. It showed where the rogues had been spotted. They were always in the same three places. That was very odd behavior for rogues.

“How many attacks in total?” I asked.

Xander put up an overlay that showed eleven different rogue attacks and what area they attacked.

“Another two were spotted around midnight last night, but both was gone before they could catch them. I don’t get why these three spots though. We have plenty of territory, so why aren’t they going anywhere else?” Xander asked.

None of us had the answer. I wished we did because this was getting very fucking frustrating. The rogues would surely venture around the boundary lines if they were checking our defenses. There had to be some connection that we were failing to see. That was almost worse because this had to get sorted out.

I flipped through papers in the black folder I grabbed from my office and handed Xander the findings. He scoffed when he read through what they provided me.

“The Blacktree pack doctor was an absolute imbecile, so the autopsy was inconclusive. However, I hacked into their servers and ran another analysis of my own. The rogues were dosed with something we haven’t seen before. I’d venture to guess that it gave them the edge to get so close to the territory. They never breeched our borders, but they had to move like the wind to not be seen until they got that close. There is a .03 second delay in our sensors, so they had to be really fucking fast. The substance was long gone before I could analyze it, but all the rogues along the Blacktree territory had the same findings,” I explained.

I passed around copies of the papers for each of their records. Rogues were a sore spot for all of us. The fact that we could not figure out their motivation was weighing on all of us. Rogues typically fought for food, shelter, or because they had gone feral and relied on animalistic instinct. This all just seemed a little too perfect for it to be the latter.

Eric looked carefully at the map before turning his attention back to us. “What do we do to prevent them from getting through? Should we double up patrols?”

Xander ran his hand through his hair and nodded. Poor bastard looked like he had not slept that well. We all worked hard, but Xander worked himself a little too hard. He preferred to do things so that we could all have more time off. None of us agreed with that, but he still did it. Trying to argue with him or make him see reason was a feat in and of itself. Nobody could really reason with the guy.

“That’s a fair idea. Let’s double the patrols in those areas and push the boundary line out by five miles. It’s neutral territory, so we’re allowed to patrol it as well.”

We all sat around and discussed some more details on the situation with no finality as we still could not figure out a damn reason why they would act so out of the norm. Ultimately, we broke away once we came to that conclusion.

Kurtis offered to go scour the woods for information that might help. We were not sure if he would find anything at all, but it was still worth a look.

After a hot shower and another cup of coffee, I made my way back down to the War Room. Nobody else was there, and for that I was thankful.

There was something nagging at me, but I was not sure what it was. Sometimes it was just easier to work in peace. I pulled up every map and file we had on the rogue issue. I saw the three areas that were affected, but they seemed too perfectly placed, and that was not a rogue’s M.O. at all.

There was nothing at those locations. So, why there? It was almost as if they were looking for or waiting for something.

My phone vibrated on the desk, and I welcomed the brief break from the rogue’s insanity. I smiled when I saw it was Emma.

Emma – “Regarding the paper. Are you sure that you still want to help?”

Ethan – “Why wouldn’t I?”

Emma – “Because you are probably a busy guy who does busy guy things.”

I could not help but laugh. I got the feeling that she thought people only did things out of obligation. I never would have offered if I was not positive about wanting to help her.

I never did things out of obligation. Sure, I took care of my pack but not out of obligation. It was out of honor and love. Blood Moon Betas always came from my family, so I was groomed for this. It was my legacy just as it had been for my father and his father before him.

Ethan – “I’m doing busy guy things right now, but I’m stuck. Want to help?”

Xander would skin me alive and let his wolf, Kai, eat my entrails if he knew I showed anything top-secret to someone not on the squad. We had strict rules on sharing confidential information. Simply, we did not.

To be honest, I was not sure why I had the urge to get her help, but it was too late to go back now.

I went to the door and locked it. There was a keypad to enter, but we made sure to place a lock on the inside in case we needed to make sure nobody could get in. It was a safety precaution put in place for any future attacks. It was a safe room which had remote access to the entire territory. We designed it that way on purpose.

Emma – “Not sure how much help I would be, but let’s do it.”

I sent Emma a video request because it was something she would have to see. She answered immediately, and I was struck again with her eyes. They were fucking gorgeous and still had the rings. It was her default setting, but I had never heard of it happening before. I supposed there was a first time for everything.

She sat on her bed with a superhero t-shirt that hung off her shoulders. I saw a few scars along her collarbone. Perhaps that was from the wolfsbane incidents she mentioned. Her hair was braided to the side. She was the picture of ease.

“Hey, stranger,” she greeted warmly, making me smile.

“Hey to you too. You’re not busy, are you?” I asked, hoping that she was not.

She shook her head and waved her hand in the air. “For you, I got time. What’s up?”

Her words boosted my ego a bit after it had been so carelessly deflated yesterday when she remained unaffected by my presence.

“This is literally top-secret, so can I trust you with this?” I asked her seriously.

I was about to break multiple rules of our pack. The same rules that caused swift and severe punishment. I never would had considered doing this before I met her, but now it felt like I needed to. I briefly wondered if Xander would take that as a reasonable excuse if he ever found out about it. Somehow, I highly doubted that.

She narrowed her eyes at me, fixing me with a hard stare.

“Of course, you can. You never have to worry about me betraying your trust. I’m not that kind of person,” she promised.

That was all I needed to hear because I definitely believed her. It was odd seeing as how we met yesterday, but I did. I was not one to trust someone too quickly either. Emma was just different for some reason.

“We’ve been having a bit of a rogue situation here, but we can’t figure out why it’s happening or what the connection is. There’s something strange about the entire situation. What do you know about rogues?”

She looked thoughtful for a moment and got up off her bed. She went to her desk and set the phone down.

I got a fairly good view of her room. It was a stark contrast to what small part of her house I saw yesterday. This room showed a story of who she was. Her room was painted in a silver color that was very reminiscent of the rings around her eyes. It was the same color of Kai’s eyes. Perhaps he could convince Xander not to kill me over this since Kai and Emma had similar eyes. Yeah, that was a stretch even to me.

There were some photographs hanging in frames around her room. It was easy to guess who the little blonde girl was once I saw her eyes. She was grinning up at a dark-haired man who must had been her father. They seemed really happy.

It was interesting to note that even pup Emma had the same rings around her eyes. Why was that? It was not a human trait, so that meant it had to do with being a shifter. How could she have that connection with her wolf even as a pup before she was capable of having a wolf yet?

Xander’s was the only case that I came across with early shifts. He shifted at twelve instead of thirteen.

One picture showed a toddler Emma, another showed her probably around six or seven, and she still had the same eyes. Mark another win in the interesting column for Emma. That column was adding up quickly.

Next to her bed, there was a large bookshelf that was filled to the brim with books. There had to be hundreds of them. Xander would be in dork heaven right now.

Some of the books on the top shelf looked very old. She stood on her tiptoes reaching for one on that shelf. It strained her shorts, and I thoroughly enjoyed the view. Huh, there were even more scars on her legs. Perhaps she was a warrior in her pack. She surely had the attitude and fearlessness for it.

She thumbed through the books until she got to a red leatherbound one. She pulled it off the shelf and brought it over to the desk, opening it, and looking for the proper page before placing her finger down.

She took a seat and turned her attention back to me.

ETHAN Emma’s eyes were bright, like she was enjoying the opportunity to share her knowledge. We would get along quite well then. “It’s common knowledge that rogues are shifters who do not belong to a pack. Most end up going feral because our kind is hardwired to pack life and following an Alpha. There are certain rumors that have circulated around from pack to pack that some rogues banded together and appointed an Alpha. They effectively became their own pack. They are no longer rogues at that point though. The two cases that I know of for certain occurred in Washington state and another in Wyoming. Therefore, it’s possible. However, for rogues to survive outside of a pack, they have to be very strong mentally in order to fight the urge to become feral.” Her knowledge was impressive. Perhaps the urge to get her help was for a good reason. Emma found a passage in the book and read it aloud. “Rogues rely on the animalistic instincts of the shifter for survival. The beast takes over a

ETHAN Her back was to us, so she had not sensed us yet. Her long blonde was up in a messy bun on the top of her head. Surprisingly, all of her hair fit. No idea how though. Perhaps she was a magician. She looked completely at ease. If I had been a rogue, she would be dead by now. That irritated me because she apparently did not take my warning seriously earlier. Did she really have no sense of self-preservation inside her? Blaze quietly stalked up to Emma, who still had not moved. He and went to pounce, but she dodged out of the way seconds before Blaze could land. Well then, she had actually been paying attention and noticed us approach. She laid her trap for us. Nice. She stood up tall, as if unaffected with seeing a strange wolf at all. It was either a power play or the she-wolf had completely lost her damn mind. Her head tilted to the side, studying Blaze. The way her eyes moved lazily over his form without showing an ounce of concern was another point in the interesting colu

ETHAN “Who was Mr. Wolfs-a-lot?” she asked, smirking at me over her shoulder. I let out a deep laugh at her description of Johnson. I heard a lot of different names for him over the years, but never had I heard that one. Perhaps his ego would be bruised from her like mine had been yesterday. Oh, and Luxor could join in Blaze’s sulking. ‘Not sulking, asshole. Just. Shut up,’ he growled. “He’s one of the most brutal warriors we have.” I tsked her, shaking my head. Her smirk only deepened. This chick was so fucking strange but in a very good way. She truly was not intimidated by us. ‘See if Kai is so humored next time,’ Blaze snorted. Oh goddess, that would be priceless. Now, we just had to get them all together. Kai was a complete brutal beast. Downright the scariest fucking wolf anyone had ever met. I bet that Emma would not be intimidated in the least. “He was on patrol and closest to here. He’s also one of my friends, so I’ll have to tell him of your description. He’ll be posi

ETHAN Sitting through another round with Dr. Dipshit was irritating, but I needed an excuse to enter Blacktree. Without expressed permission from their Alpha, they held the right to do whatever they wanted with me, including killing me on sight. However, I was attached to breathing. Have been since birth. “Do you have an idea where the black substance originated from?” I asked offhandedly, carefully observing him. He shuffled around his office until he got to a metal file cabinet. He used the key that was hanging around his neck to open it. The information inside that filing cabinet had to be top secret if he kept the key on his person. He did not respond to me while he searched through it. I tilted my head, analyzing his body language. His shoulder blades were pressed together, and his shoulders were pushed forward. He was nervous. I wondered why that was. It was hilarious that he did not even catch on to the fact that I knew about the substance that had not been in the reports h

ETHAN She walked up to me and gave me a bright smile. It was the exact opposite of what I had witnessed. She acted as if nothing had just happened, so I supposed I should as well. I would follow her lead on this. There was no guessing all that was cut into her life. She had changed and was dressed in a black romper that contrasted with her light skin tone and pale blonde hair. It was a good contrast that she was able to pull off. I really still liked the jeans from day one, but I was not picky. “Hey,” I said, trying to push aside what I had witnessed. I had to get my head in the game. She looked relieved that I was not bombarding her with questions. “What do you want to drink? My treat as a thank you for your help with my project,” she said. I had no idea what was even good here, so I told her to surprise me. I drank most of my coffee from the pot instead of from a shop because I spent most of my time between various duties around the pack. This would be a new experience. Coffee

EMMA Ethan was… well, I was not quite sure how to even put it into words. I spent eight years crafting a hard shell – a way to protect myself from them. The only way that they allowed me peace was if they thought they broke me. If they thought they controlled me, nobody got hurt. So, I played the part I needed to. Trust me, it was not easy to always keep my emotions in check. It took every ounce of control I had not to tear the assholes limb from limb. I was strong enough to do the tearing, but I never allowed them to see how capable I truly was. Ezekiel was not afraid to shed the pack’s blood to remind me who was in charge. In the beginning, I refused to bow down to Heath and Ezekiel. They tortured me in every creative way possible, but it did nothing to break my resolve. Then, people got hurt because of it. They knew that I refused to let anyone get hurt because of me. Their tiny brains found my only weakness. It was always ironic to think about the fact that I protected the pac

EMMA “So, what would you like to drink?” Ethan asked, turning to look at me while casually leaning his elbows against the bar. His head tilted slightly when he spoke to me. He looked like a walking ad for confidence, so I tried to intake some of that energy. I watched as some people steered away from him, and it was absolutely amusing. He had been serious about their normal reactions. It was downright hilarious to see in person though. They sensed that he was dangerous, so their instincts screamed at them to steer clear. I never once felt that way though. If anything, my instincts said the opposite. “Vodka cranberry, please,” I replied, smirking after noticing everyone’s aversion to him. He threw up his hand to catch the bartender’s attention. Ethan ordered, and I watched as the poor guy gulped and hurried to get our drinks. I took a moment to look around. It was crowded with all types of people. There was no clear distinction of social groups like there were at school. Everyone i

EMMA “If I’m not worth it, why do you waste so much effort trying to get a rise out of me?” I asked. I looked her over from head to toe. The dress she wore was tight and came just low enough to cover her lady bits. It wasn’t attractive on her at all. She could try all she wanted, but nothing could cover up her personality. Of course, she didn’t respond because she had nothing to say back to that. “That’s what I thought. Heed my warning from earlier. Don’t be stupid,” I said before sitting back down. Marsey, being a dumb bitch, grabbed my hair and yanked, pulling me back to my feet. Both of the guys went to intervene, but I didn’t need them to come to my rescue. I was more than capable of dealing with Marsey’s bullshit. She wasn’t a threat at all. I rolled my eyes before I took a step back with my right foot and planted my body before grabbing her forearms and flipping her over until she was laying against the floor on her back and no longer holding my locks in her greasy paws. EMMA I went into labor during the middle of the night, and it scared the living shit out of my mates. It was adorable while also being a little comical. Most soon-to-be fathers were like that. We had everything ready because we knew it was possible to go into labor a little earlier than expected because of having twins. Oddly enough, this pregnancy had no true complications. Most shifters who had multiples typically had complications. However, I was thankful that everything had gone as smoothly as possible. The sigils truly helped with the pain of the delivery because it would have been torture otherwise. I felt horrible that I did not already have these on hand for when Bellamy was born. “You have this, Emma. One more push and your baby boy will be here,” Tilly said. It had been ten very long hours of labor, but it would be worth it in the end. Kai was sitting behind me, lending me strength during this time. He had a hold of one leg while Xander had a hold of the other. The thre

EMMA It was still very surreal to think that I had been in Tylaphina’s realm for six entire months. However, I was able to bring back messages to Papa and Leonidas from our family. They were amazed as I told them about spending time with everyone. Their parents wanted me to tell them how incredibly proud they were of them both. They were proud of Papa for being the King that our people needed. They watched as he transitioned to the ruler of Aedrul and were thankful for how he protected everyone that he could from Selene until she could be taken care of permanently. They were proud of Leonidas for everything he did to help Papa rune Aedrul. His strength and perseverance made the entire Venscothi line puff out their chests in appreciation and admiration. My mates and I wasted no time in completing our bond in wolf form as well as completing the Goddess of Fate ceremony. It was very intimate and quite pleasurable. It was interesting to say the least because we watched as our souls mom

EMMA The pain from Asry’s shards slicing through me disappeared. Had I died? Nae did not say that was a possibility, but even she could not see every outcome. “No, you are not dead,” a melodic voice said. I opened my eyes and was in a beautiful field that was adorned with flowers of every color. My body was bathed in incredible warmth from the sun overhead. It was so peaceful, and my heart felt whole. It was a nice change from it feeling ripped apart, so there was that at least. There were wolves of all sizes sitting around, curiously watching me. It was a little creepy, but they looked happy. A beautiful woman stood between two of the larger wolves who looked as big as Krosthani. She was easily seven feet tall and had an ethereal glow around her. Her light brown hair cascaded in waves all the way to her waist, and her eyes were the most vibrant honey color which complemented her light bronze skin tone. “My name is Tylaphina, and it is because of you that I am free now. I could not let her go. “We have to let them take care of her. She needs them. Come on,” Xander said. I could hear the same anguish in his voice that I felt. They spoke lowly to one another, but none of us could hear it. ‘She used Nata’s magic to protect me,’ I told Xander. I collapsed to the ground under the weight of it all. I steeled my shoulders and turned around slowly to see Asry’s smug face smirking at me as if he was the one in charge right now. As if he was the one who fooled me. Oh, how the mighty would fall. “Can’t say that I’m surprised that you’re here with mother bitch,” I said dismissively. “Ungrateful brat. Who do you think you are?” she hissed at me. I looked at Asry imploringly who just laughed and waved me on. He did not care about Lenora one damn bit. He probably was not wanting me to kill her, but I still would. This was something that I thought about extensively since we put this plan together. I needed to make him believe that I would consider being on his side. Then I would kill her so that she was out of our hair while also ensuring that his vessel was no more. This would solve one of the issues tonigh

They were beside me every step of the way from that night at Olly’s until this moment as they pulled me between them. “You are absolutely stunning, love,” Xander said. EMMA We all ate a late breakfast together. It was not a joyous occasion, but we tried to make it as lighthearted as possible. The mission tonight was weighing heavily on everyone’s mind. It was not something that we discussed or alluded to, but it was the gigantic elephant in the room. I was really trying to keep my emotions under control because my mates would feel them and worry. We could not change what would happen tonight because we all knew the truth. Asry was too dangerous to let live. He would never stop coming for me or my family. We had to take him out of the equation to ensure our safety. I had a feeling in my gut that Nae’s vision of me being in a coma-like state was going to happen. This was the one thing I had to keep from my mates because they would call all of this off right here and now. EMMA I woke up between my sleeping mates and smiled at them. They gave me the best ending to our night yesterday. That bath was perfect and incredibly relaxing. Today was going to be difficult on all of us but more so on them because they would be fighting against their instincts to protect me at all costs. Was I terrified to face Asry today? Absolutely. I would be a damned fool to feel giddy about facing an ultimate evil that wanted to enslave me as his Queen. However, that terror would solve absolutely nothing. For the time being, I would just shove that terror down as far as I could. Everyone needed to remain focused for today because our futures could finally begin once he was gone. A mischievous grin tipped my lips up as I looked between the two of them. Eenie…meenie… My gaze landed on Xander, so I carefully maneuvered myself until I was eyelevel with his glorious cock. I remembered the first time I saw it and how excited it made me. It still did to this day. I would never get
