The school day dragged on as usual. Amaris and Anna day dreamed back and forth all day about what it would be like to goto a party at the mountain home of one of their rich class mates. Amaris and Anna had all their classes together except for their last two of the day. So Amaris went to earth science and gym by herself. She didn’t mind that much. Mr. Bruce, who taught earth science, loved the moon as much as she did and was always keen to have little discussions with her before class about it.

Mr. Bruce was a tall man in his mid 20’s with dark brown hair flecked with a tiny bit of premature grey. He had a heavy five o’clock shadow and twinkling light blue eyes. His overall appearance looked like someone that you would not want to mess with except for the eyes, they were always kindly. He always wore a button down shirt that fit tightly to his muscled body, and an open collar. His size made him intimidating. He definitely had many of the teenage girls in the school signing up for his classes.

Today she entered Mr. Bruce’s class room and he wasn’t there. She took her usual seat at the black two person bench in the front of the class and waited while her classmates filed in. Amaris pulled out the homework assignment that was due that day and placed it on the desk in anticipation of Mr. Bruce collecting it at the beginning of class as he always did. The bell rang and still no Mr. Bruce. One of the other kids got out of their seat to take a look outside the classroom door. He quickly closed the door and ran to his seat while exclaiming “He’s coming! He’s running down the hallway. “.

Mr. Bruce entered the class out of breath with his eyes searching wildly. They finally fell on Amaris and he seemed to relax. Mr. Bruce started class as usual with a small apology for his tardiness. Things went on as normal. At the end of class, Mr. Bruce called Amaris aside and waited until the rest of the class had left. “Where is your next class?’ Mr. Bruce asked. I’m heading to gym next.”

“ I’m heading to the office . I’ll walk with you.”

Mr. Bruce followed her out of the classroom. They walked side by side down the hall towards the front of the school. “Amaris, First, Happy Birthday! And, Second, I know this is none of my business but, you aren’t planning on going to the party that is up on the mountain tonight are you?”

Amaris was taken aback. How would he know about the party at Jack’s? “Well, I did get an invitation, but I told Anna that Grandma Beth and Grover would expect me home for a special birthday dinner tonight. They like to do their own little party. And Gran likes to make a big deal out of 17 apparently.”

Mr. Bruce seemed to study her for a moment and then said “Ok sounds like Gran has the right idea. Stay clear of the mountain top. Its not an ideal place for you.” Amaris nodded her consent with a confused look.

Amaris broke off toward the gym door to the girls locker rooms. She could not understand why Mr.Bruce suddenly had an interest in her life outside school. Usually their conversations stayed on school and the moon.

Amaris went to her assigned locker in the girls locker room, and began opening the padlock on the door. Several other girls in her class had already gotten their lockers open and were changing into the school gym uniform. The tall blonde girl to her left turned to the rest of the group in the room and said “Does anyone know what we are doing today?” Two of the other girls answer back that they were going outside for kickball. Amaris liked kickball, although some of the boys in her class were a bit overly competitive when they played in the fall.

“Happy Birthday Mar!” Says the tall blonde girl next to Amaris. Her name was Heather and she was a happy go lucky team mate of Amaris’ from basketball. Heather was on Amaris’ basketball teams all the way from the time they were in first grade. Heather and Amaris had spent time doing shooting drills, and practicing dribbling, blocking, and coming up with plays every winter. They had been friends for years.

“Thanks Heather!”

“Are you doing anything special for your birthday? It is 17 after all.” Inquired Heather with a warm smile. It highlighted her golden brown eyes.

“ Gran and Grover are planning a special celebration dinner. They love cooking up my favorite dinner, roast lamb and potatoes, and of course Gran’s famous Double Chocolate Cake.”

“Mmmmmm! I love her cake! If I were you I would have my birthday once a week just so she would make me cake!” Heather laughs with a dreamy look as she licks her lips.

“ I will save you a piece. It’s just the three of us. We usually have cake left for days. Gran makes a huge one.” Amaris promises with a laugh.

The girls change and head out together to the gym where Mr. Clark and Mrs. Bass bring the group out to the baseball field where they begin to split the students into two teams. Mr. Clark ran a very comprehensive and unusual gym class compared to most. He taught everything from basketball and baseball to cross country skiing and rock climbing, but everyone’s favorite by far was the ropes course and trail hiking.

Amaris and Heather are both picked for the same team and donned pinnies. Their team heads out to the field first while the other team decides the kicking order and lines up. Mr. Clark goes to the pitching mound and Mrs. Bass lines up at the plate as the umpire. Kyle Jess, a senior, comes up to the plate first as Amaris takes the short stop position and Heather takes third base. Mr. Clark rolls out the first pitch and Kyle runs up to meet the ball. Everyone on and off the field was paying attention to the action when out of the corner of her eye, Amaris caught sight of something bright red. She turned her head and took her eye off the action to see the same group of people that she saw in the office earlier. It was the lady in the red dress and the group of men in black suits following behind her. They all walked straight at the field with purpose.

At that moment Amaris heard Heather yell her name. She turned in time to get hit square in the face with the ball. Her quick reflexes kicked in and she managed to catch the ball and throw it at Kyle hitting him just before he made it to first base. All the players on the field let out cheers and Heather ran over for a high five. “Nice recovery! Are you okay?” “I’m fine” Amaris laughed. “That will teach me to not pay attention.”

Heather looked over her shoulder at the group heading their direction. “Who are those guys?” Amaris shrugged. “Don’t know. I did see them in the office this morning arguing with the secretary.” Heather started to walk back to her position at third base as the next person came up to the plate.

The approaching group reached the field at that moment. Heather and Amaris turned to face the group that had walked up to the side of the benches at the side of the field. The woman in red, who was staring straight at Amaris, said “You. Girl. Come with us. Now!” Heather turned to look at Amaris with a questioning look on her face. Mr. Clark walked off the mound and put himself between the girls and the group of new comers. Mrs. Bass stood up and walked toward the group as well.

“Can we help you?” Mr. Clark asked as he faced off with the lady in red. She had black hair pulled back in a tight chignon and dark brown eyes. She had the same olive colored skin that Amaris had. She also had a short stature, but had a very strong bone structure that could almost be described as severe. Her red dress was tight fitting but she looked very well put together with not a single hair out of place.

“ I am here to take Amaris home.” Said the lady in red as she looked at Mr. Clark for the first time having torn her eyes off Amaris at last.

“You will need to clear that through the main office. It is at the front of the school.” Mr. Clark said as he point back in the direction of the school.

The woman in the red dress huffed and folded her arms across her chest “I have no more patience for this.” and pointed two fingers at two of the men and then motioned them to Amaris. Instantly the two men she had pointed to started moving forward. “Come with us miss and no one will be hurt.”

Heather turned to Amaris “Are these guys serious? Amaris is this some sort of prank? This sounds like something out of a bad action movie.”

Amaris was frozen. As the hulking men walked closer she backed up a step. Turning to Amaris, Mr.Clark asks “Do you know these people Amaris?” She shook her head no as she backed up another step. Heather then took a step to the side blocking Amaris. As one of the two men attempted to pass by him, Mr Clark reached out his hand and grabbed hold of the man’s arm in an attempt to restrain him. In a lightning fast move the man twisted his arm and grabbed Mr. Clark’s arm in return and yanked it around and backwards quickly until there was a sickening crunch. Mr. Clark screamed in pain and dropped to his knees and fell sideways. His arm was hanging at an odd angle. Mrs. Bass had her cell phone out and was dialing the police. The second man that was in motion did not waste time. Without hesitation he drew out a gun from under his jacket and fired. The cell phone slipped every so slowly from Mrs. Bass’s hand and she fell behind it.

That was when the students in the class started to scream and run in different directions. It was utter chaos. In the middle of the unrest, Heather turned around to face Amaris and told her to run into the woods behind the ball field. There was an opening in the back of center field for players to use to go out and retrieve lost balls and so the ground maintenance crew could easily pass through. Amaris turned and ran. She thought Heather would be right behind her but then she heard her voice telling someone to leave her alone. Amaris looked back and saw the first suited man grappling with Heather and Heather suddenly fell to a heap on the ground. The first man yanked his arm back to reveal a knife in his hand with blood on it.

Amaris tripped and fell to all fours, and looked back yelling Heathers’ name and reached her hand out to her as if she could grasp the girl and bring her to safety.

The two men in suits kept coming. Most of the students had fled out of their way now and were now entering the school or the parking lot that was close by.

Amaris stumbled back to her feet and began running as fast as she could toward the trees. She made it to the back fence when something grabbed her t-shirt. She kept moving, her momentum ripping the shirt right off her body and exposing her sports bra underneath. With a scream she jolted forward and ran faster.

She knew these woods well and not that far in they were very over grown with under brush. If she could get far enough there were plenty of places to hide, and many ways that she could take that would slow her pursuers. If she could make it to the river she could cross and take out the rope bridge so that they couldn’t follow. She ran through the over growth springing like a deer over the fallen trees and bushes. All of the men that had been standing with the woman in red on the field were now chasing her. They were all tall and heavily muscled men, which Amaris thought would slow them down, but to her amazement they kept up with her.

Amaris was now terrified and confused. What in the world could she have done to have these people come after her. She had no time to think about that now, she had to get a little more of a lead on the men before she got to the river or she would not have enough time to take out the bridge.

Amaris knew that there were a few places that she could get ahead of them and maybe out of sight for a little while. She headed toward the large rock outcropping that had the rope swing across to the next set of rocks. The ropes were usually left dangling and had catch ropes to pull it to one side or the other. As she approached the top of the rock she yanked up the loop of the catch rope off the post and began pulling the rope swing to her. As soon as the rope touched her hands she stepped back and grabbed on with both hands as tight as she could. She swung across and landed on the top of the next outcropping of rocks. She turned around as soon as her feet hit the stone and quickly pulled up both the end of the swing rope and the catch rope, so that the men standing on the other side could not follow her. They would have to go back down the rocks and back track to where the trail winds down to the path that leads to the base of the two rock formations and then climb the far hill of rocks. This would take them at least an extra 2 or 3 minutes and give Amaris the precious time she needed to get across the bridge and take it down before they could get across.

Amaris did not look back. She ran as fast as she could down the other side of the rock outcropping and back into the woods. She knew the bridge was not far away now, but neither were the men. She could still here them shouting at one another and crashing through the under brush. Hopefully she had given herself enough time. As she ran down hill now along the path heading to the water, she remembered how Heather had taken a shortcut through the bushes on the side of the path, essentially cutting out the curve in the trail just before the bridge and no one saw her do it that day in gym class. She had shown Amaris on the way back that day. Amaris only hoped that she could remember where it was and be able to find it while she was at a dead run on the path. Having come further down the hill, Amaris saw the familiar tree with the gnarled branch that looked like a “turkey leg” as Heather described it. Tears began to fall fast down her cheeks as she remembered seeing her friend crumple to the

Amaris had no idea where the third man was but she was not going to waste time looking for him. She turned and started running up the path leading up the side of the hill away from the bridge. Amaris knew that there was a place about three quarters of a mile up where the path ran close to the road. She could take the road from there straight to her house. It was only a few miles away. Amaris was still running but now that she was fairly sure that there were no men close by that were chasing her, the adrenaline was running out and the reality of what happened both at the kickball field and the bridge was becoming more real and less like a bad dream. Amaris continued moving along the trail but at a slower still. She had tears running down her face in a constant stream and was having a hard time seeing. Mr.Clark was injured badly, Mrs. Bass was shot, was she dead? Heather, she was injured. Amaris had seen the man step away from her with a bloody knife. Was she dead too? Was all this her f

When Mr. Bruce pulled up in front of the house everything was quiet. That was not unusual at Gran’s. Often when Amaris came home Gran was out helping someone who was ill, or she would be out in the woods or on the mountainside picking herbs or digging roots for some of her medicines that she made. Even from the outside you could see the house was warm and happy, but not fancy, just comfortable and welcoming. Amaris led Mr. Bruce into the house through the side door that leads into the kitchen. The house still smelled of Gran’s chocolate cake, which was still cooling on the center of the wooden kitchen table. However, once Amaris entered, she could see that the kitchen was a shambles. Every cabinet and drawer was open with their contents torn out. The pantry door was open wide and the contents of many of the jars that were stored in there, both food and medicine were smashed on the floor. Amaris’ hands flew to her mouth as her eyes moved across the room. Mr. Bruce reached forward and

Mr. Bruce was startled at the sudden change in her demeanor. He pulled back and looked at Amaris as if she had struck him. “It’s true. You really are her.” Amaris looked at him not understanding his meaning, but also feeling weird. It was as if she had just drank 10 energy drinks and they all kicked in at once. There was a feeling of energy running through her suddenly. It’s like the thought of her Gran being in trouble woke up a power in her that she never knew was there before.Ignoring this as just one more weird thing to happen to her today, her 17th birthday of all days. Amaris looked back into Mr. Bruce’s eyes and repeated her command.“I want answers Mr. Bruce and I need to hear the truth from you about all of this. Who are these people and are the people from the school the same ones who came here and killed Grover? Do you think they have Gran too?”Mr. Bruce stood up, reached down and offered his hand to pull Amaris off the floor. He grabbed a kitchen chair that was laying on

Amaris walked out the back door toward the police car. Mr. Bruce hesitated and then followed behind. The officer got out and then walked toward Mr. Bruce. “Lyle, what’s going on? The dispatcher said that there was a murder.” The officer said, paying no attention to Amaris.“Reid, It’s Grover. Looks like someone broke in and he surprised them and they killed him.” Lyle said. Sheriff Reid Clifton had been the local sheriff for a long time. He is supposed to retire at the end of the summer. His wife passed away a few years ago from cancer and he was going to move out of state to be closer to his daughter and grandchild. This sleepy little town had seen it’s fair share of speeders and drunk drivers, kids pulling pranks, and under age drinking, but in his time as an officer he had only investigated a handful of murders. “Did you touch anything Lyle?” Sheriff Reid asked finally looking over at Amaris. “This is your grandmother’s house, she’s not home? Where is she?” Sheriff Reid looked at

  • Moon Glow   Chapter 9

Lyle drove slowly and methodically up the mountain side road. He seemed to be on edge. Amaris assumed that was because she had been questioning him and he was deep in thought about what she had asked him about. In reality, Lyle knew this was the exact same route that Amaris’ parents had been driving the night that they had been killed and he wanted to make sure that they weren’t followed or worse chased. Fortunately for Lyle there was not another car on the mountain side for the entire ride. There was usually light traffic at this time of day but he had never seen no traffic at all. This made him even more nervous. Amaris peered out the windshield knowing that they had to be close now. The lights were getting closer and they could see the gate blocking the road up ahead. Lyle slowed and came to a stop at the gate. “Wait here. I’ll be right back.” Lyle got out of the car and walked toward the two men standing at the gate. Amaris watched as they greeted one another, and then Lyle pull

Amaris was so surprised and over joyed, she ran up the steps and pulled Gran into a big hug.“You are safe! Oh I missed you so much. I was so worried.” Amaris released Gran to look at her. Her short stature and kindly face had always made Amaris feel like she was safe. There was something special about the way she felt with her.Gran let go of Amaris and reached out for Lyle as he came up the steps and gave him a hug as well. Gran patted the side of his face and said again “I knew you could find her.”Amaris was about to speak but Gran turned to her, “I know you have a million questions, but we need to get inside first and get you taken care of.” Gran reached an arm around Amaris’ back and walked her to the door. Lyle had gotten there ahead of them and was holding it open for them. She walked into a cozy living room that opened into the kitchen-dining area. It was exactly what she imagined a log cabin to be. Exposed beams in the walls and ceiling as well as a wood plank floor. It even

“Yes, your birthday is not for another 2 days.” Gran looked up into Amaris’ face. Her dark eyes were in shock and disbelief.“Why did you let me believe all this time that you knew nothing about me. You told me you did not know who my parents were. That my birthday for the last 17 years has been celebrated on this day. What else have you not told me?” Gran looked at Lyle who had been quietly leaning in the door way to the bedroom watching them. Lyle gave Gran a brief look and then a quick nod and turned and went into the bedroom closing the door behind him. Gran faced Amaris and took both of her hands in her own. “Amaris, you are right, there is more and when I tell you the rest you will see why we did not tell you until now. “ “Amaris there are a few things that you need to know to start with. The first is that this village is actually one of many villages on this mountain that are all related and have the same belief system. Each village has a family that has provided leadership in

Amaris and Lyle sat at the table in the RV which had now become their home. They had settled into their life together on the run. They drove through the European countryside acting like all the rest of the tourists. They stayed away from areas that were known concentrated werewolf areas. They fell into their day-to-day routine, and Lyle had even taught Amaris how to drive the RV. Amaris was starting to show now, and Lyle was concerned that she did not have the proper doctor's care for her pregnancy. More than once he had tried to see if he could find a pack doctor that was willing to see her that was not loyal to the crown. However, they were in Europe, where the werewolves were most loyal to the King or Queen, since they were so close to them. He had not had any luck. They had not had any contact with anyone that they knew, as they had planned. Lyle had bought a burner phone in case of an emergency, but had not even turned it on yet so that there was no way to trace them. To further

Amaris bent down to see Anna at her feet holding her bleeding leg. She had changed back and was now naked. Amaris stripped off her hoodie and gave it to her grateful best friend. "Are you okay?" Amaris asked Anna while looking over to see if Lyle had moved. "I'll be fine. It's nothing Taji can't take care of when he gets back. Go check on your mate." Anna said watching the torn look on Amaris' face. Amaris looked back and gave Anna's shoulder a squeeze, and then hurried to Lyle. Amaris dropped to her knees between Lyle and The King's corpse. Lyle was breathing. It was as if he was asleep. Amaris knew that he must be like the others that she had brought back. It would drain her of her energy to do it. Then she took a look at the area around her. There were so many men and women that were injured and needed help. She knew that Taji could not do it all on his own. Amaris thought about how to heal them all for a moment, and then came up with an idea. She took a deep breath and closed her

Alexis and Andreas' men were attacking in their wolf form. They were coming in from every side, and from the look of it they had The King's men out numbered. The clearing was in an uproar with men and wolves everywhere. Before Amaris knew what was happening, Lyle had transformed into his wolf and leaped between her and The King. His muzzle wrinkled as he bared his teeth and growled in warning. The King looked at him and merely laughed. He reached behind him and grabbed the staff that he had back at the palace. Lyle seemed to recognize it and backed up a few steps. The King laughed at his retreat. "Smart lad. Hand her over and I will not have to use it." Lyle backed up a few more steps and this time he leaned into Amaris pushing her back too. The fighting was still going on around them. Many of The King's men lay upon the ground, and most of the rest were fighting two or three wolves now, since they were severely out numbered. Amaris saw that many of the wolves were making their way cl

Lyle walked around the back of the house to the UTV as the truck drove away. He climbed in and looked at Amaris. "Decoy." He said with a thumb over his shoulder. "Where did you find him? He looks like your doppleganger." Amaris asked amazed. "Funny thing. When I went to get some of those items that we needed earlier, he was the supply clerk that helped me. I asked him to help me out this evening by taking the truck out for a test drive to see if the repairs I made earlier are going to hold. I told him I needed to drive a short way behind to see if it was okay." Lyle laughed again. "So that poor guy has no idea that he is bait?" Amaris was getting ready to get out of the UTV. "I did tell him that since we were hiding out that we need to be extra vigilent for the possibility of attack, which is more likely since we have been here for a while." Amaris got angry. "Lyle, that poor man could get killed because they think that he is you!" She turned and yelled at him. "We

Amaris' mouth hung open for a moment, and then anger grew. "Who? Who whipped you?" Lyle turned to look at her, then down to the floor. "Adam and Sveta. They were made for each other. They are equally twisted and driven by their need for power." Lyle said with a dismissive tone and then almost mechanically started taking the rest of his clothes off. It was clear that he did not want to continue this conversation any further. Amaris walked over and lifted his face to hers from his bent over position. "I'm sorry." She said in a whisper that cracked from the emotion behind it. "I did not want any of this, least of all for you to be hurt." she kissed his cheek tenderly. Lyle dropped the clothes that he was holding and put his arms around her. "This is not your fault. Don't ever think that. This is not something that you chose. Lyle dropped it back into the pack and put a few things in from the pile that he had set aside to go into the truck. Then he grabbed the pack that Amaris was filling and sorted through her things. He found a tracker there too. "Well, at least we know it wasn't Kliman. He never touched your pack." Lyle said as he moved over to the doorway of the barn. Sitting against the wall of the barn were a few dozen hiking packs waiting to be filled. Lyle grabbed two from the end and handed one to Amaris. "Fill them with everything that you will need. Only one extra set of clothes, and a couple extra pairs of socks and underware. Food, and matches, and so on." Lyle was moving so quickly that Amaris was not sure what to grab first to stay out of his way. "Quickly! We need to do this before he gets back, or anyone else comes along and sees us." They both hurried and filled their packs and then Lyle took them both and told Amaris to stay there and he would be right back. While Lyle wa

When Amaris' hand touched the young man's arm she suddenly was transported to another time. It was night here. There was the unmistakable sounds of fighting. Growls, and yelling all around her. The young man that Amaris had just been talking to was in front of her hiding behind a tree. He held some sort of black box in his hand and loooked to be waiting for something. "Where are we?" She asked the young man in a whisper as she stepped closer to him. The man did not respond. He did not even look at her. She reached up to tap him on his shoulder. Her hand went right through him. Amaris jumped back startled. She stared at her own hand, and then tried to touch the tree next to her. Her hand passed through that too. She took another look around her. She realized that the man standing next to her was speaking. "They are leaving now. Green transport truck. She is hidden in the back under the tarp. Out" The man said. He was putting the box away and turned to leave in th

Amaris stood there frozen and watched the back of Gran as she walked out of the room. She slowly sank back down on the couch next to Lyle again. He still had not moved from his spot, but seemed to be in deep thought. Amaris brought Lyle out of his stupor by grabbing his hand. "Did she just say what I think that she said? Are we going to have a baby?" Amaris thought about what Gran had said 'Little ones'. What did she mean? Was she talking about our children in the future? Amaris felt just like she often had lately after talking to Gran, more confused. Lyle took a deep breath and turned to Amaris. "According to the tapestries that we saw earlier, you and I will have one set of twins. A boy and a girl. Like you they will also have powers. Which means that like you they will also be hunted by others for what they can do." Lyle hung his head. He did not want to think about his children being hunted anymore than he wanted to think about Amaris being hunted. Now it was Ama

Amaris sat back and looked at Gran who had a big grin on her face. Anna walked over and squeezed in between Lyle and Amaris. "Sorry Romeo, but we need to get this meeting moving, and you just can't help yourself." She said patting Lyle on the shoulder at his disappointed look. Lyle rubbed the back of his neck again and smiled raising his hands in the air. "Got me." There were a few laughs and then everyone turned back to Gran. "Well, as I was saying. We will be splitting up." Everyone gathered around her nodded. Gran had presented this idea already, and no one seemed to disagree with her. "Lyle you will be taking Amaris and hiding. NONE of us is to know where you are." Amaris' eyes grew wide and worry now crept in. Up to this point she had been able to stay safe because she had the help of a lot of people. She did not want anyone else to die, and she was afraid that she would get Lyle killed if he felt that he was her only line of defense. Gran pointed a finger at Amari
