The King turned right back around and walked over to the guard at the end who seemed to be in charge. At least he seemed to have the most colorful ribbons on his chest. Amaris looked around, but there was no one to help her. She reached down and grabbed Lyle under his arm and heaved. She had not realized how heavy he was. She pulled him up with everything that she had. She felt like a weight lifter getting her legs under her to heave both her weight and Lyle's to a standing position. Once in a standing position she found that he was heavy, and seemed to be in some sort of stupor, whether from the beatings he recieved, lack of food, or for some other reason she was not sure. She looked around at the surrounding guards, and saw Anna. Anna looked around at the guards at the walls and nodded her head to Amaris as they locked eyes. Amaris took a tentative step toward Anna, and then another. Amaris took a quick look at the King who had his back to her and was unaware of what sh
The King stood and Sveta his daughter walked forward with him. The look on her face said she knew what was about to happen, and she was going to enjoy this. The look worried Amaris. The King walked down from the dais to the center of the cirlce that the guards had created. He looked at the group of prisoners in front of him and then turned around and looked at the group behind him. The King spun around one more time making Amaris dizzy looking at him. In a loud booming tone he began. "We have our two groups all set down here, but I think that our guests from the vampire relm will not be able to enjoy the show in their current spot. Let us give them better seats to enjoy the show. Come right down here." The King waved his arms as if he was directing air traffic. He pointed from them to the open space toward the back of the room. Everyone waited for the vampires to move from their alcove to the space at the back, facing directly opposite of the dais. The King stepped back t
Everyone in the hall stared at the guard waiting for something to happen. The silence was filled with a large metallic sound. One of the large frescos on the wall had started to move backwards. It was a huge door. Behind it was a large cavernous chamber that was dark and echoed like a cavern with all sorts of noises. Some sounding mechanical, and some sounded like animal noises. A large metal cage was being wheeled into the room. The guards that were already in the room had to move out of the way as well as the vampires. A second large cage was wheeled in right behind it. These long wheeled cages reminded Amaris of the type that you would see circus animals in when they are moved on a train, only these were much too large to fit on a train track. They were huge indeed. They were lined up end to end and took up most of the room. The prisoners were forced to spread into lines only two deep along the outside to be able to allow the guards to stay along the walls. The vampire
"A MANTICORE!" someone shouted. Many of the prisoners that had been standing near the cages took a few steps back. It looked like a lion but it had dark red fur and wings. The wings did not have fur and looked like something that you would find on a gargoyle. It had a distored looking human quality to it's face which was alarming. The long, thick, powerful tail had fur with large spikes that were made up of many smaller spikes. They seemed to glisten as it tail moved and twitched. The creature let out a loud growling roar. The second one followed quickly after hearing the first, only it spun around and looked at the cage behind it to see its fellow creature. The soldier in the first cage decided to take advantage of the momentary distraction and moved forward to try and grab the key tied on a gold cord to the largest pike at the center of the upper tail. He reached out slowly eyes on the head of the creature. His hand closed on the cord and as he pulled the cord with the k
Amaris was horrified at what she had just seen. Tears ran down her face. The King huffed and mumbled something about 'You can't please everybody.' He stood once again and came to the top of the dais stairs. "Well, I think that deserves a round of applause. It was a good effort all around, unfortunately, since neither competitor was able to complete the task, no points will be awarded to either team." He said placing his hands on his belly and giving a laugh, and then trying to lead all the watchers in applause. Only the vampires clapped. Many of them whistling or catcalling as well. Amaris looked out at the faces of the prisoners in the two groups. Many of them were horrified, others showed outrage, and a few of them looked like they would like to kill the King with their bare hands. It was clear that the King had no regard for life at all. Amaris did not want this to go on any further but did not know what she could do to stop this. "We will take a short intermission to
When Amaris was led back to the thrones on top of the dais the whole room looked different. The two huge cages were gone, and there were now enormous fence panels creating a large fenced arena in the center of the room. The two groups of prisoners and the group of vampires were pushed further back and now were in a single line around the outside of the ring. Inside this huge oval there were now huge bushes, small trees, and even boulders. There were stacks of hay bales, and a small forest of stone columns in the very center. The huge side door was again open, and this time there was what looked like a huge cattle chute running from inside the door and out to the fence. The King walked up behind Amaris. "Sit down my dear, the show is about to start." He whispered to her. The guard who had let go of her arm, but stayed standing next to her, put a hand on her shoulder and pushed her in the direction of the chair. Amaris sat hard with a thump. She scowled up at the guard who
Nikos and Michalis fell to the ground. Nikos did a somesault letting go of his net. He smoothly got to his feet, and ran back to grab the net. Michalis had not been expecting the push and fell to the ground flat on his feet, but rolled his ankle. He quickly sat up his backside and grabbed the injured ankle. "Oh no! That does not bode well for him!" The King commented. His excitement was evident. He was clearly a very different person from the cold calculating man that Amaris had talked to not five minutes ago in the small room behind the throne. Amaris' eyes were pulled back to the arena by a sudden movement. The boar had started moving. It was running and destroying everything in it's path. It rammed into the columns in the center of the arena, and sent broken stone pieces flying in the air. Most landed in the arena, a couple smaller ones actually flew right out of the ring. Nikos took off and sprinted straight through the center of the arena dodging the broken column
"Now!" Michalis jumped out of the bush and pulled a rope in the trees. The trees sprung up into the air and pulled the ropes attached to the nets. The nets pulled up around the boar and held. Michalis grabbed the ropes to help pull it taught and hold the boar. Nikos ran over to the other side and grabbed another set of ropes. Between the two of them, they were able to subdue to boar. As they tied the final ropes to the trees and a nearby rock they raised their arms in celebration as the on looking groups of prisoners cheered, jumping up and down and yelling. The two brothers embraced and high fived. The vampires booed and some of them started to walk away. The King pounded the arm of his chair with his fist. It was clear that he was not happy with the outcome of the match. Amaris stood up and cheered for the two men who had outwitted the King and his game by both of them winning together. It was then that Amaris noticed that Jason was back at her side with his mate. His f
Amaris and Lyle sat at the table in the RV which had now become their home. They had settled into their life together on the run. They drove through the European countryside acting like all the rest of the tourists. They stayed away from areas that were known concentrated werewolf areas. They fell into their day-to-day routine, and Lyle had even taught Amaris how to drive the RV. Amaris was starting to show now, and Lyle was concerned that she did not have the proper doctor's care for her pregnancy. More than once he had tried to see if he could find a pack doctor that was willing to see her that was not loyal to the crown. However, they were in Europe, where the werewolves were most loyal to the King or Queen, since they were so close to them. He had not had any luck. They had not had any contact with anyone that they knew, as they had planned. Lyle had bought a burner phone in case of an emergency, but had not even turned it on yet so that there was no way to trace them. To further
Amaris bent down to see Anna at her feet holding her bleeding leg. She had changed back and was now naked. Amaris stripped off her hoodie and gave it to her grateful best friend. "Are you okay?" Amaris asked Anna while looking over to see if Lyle had moved. "I'll be fine. It's nothing Taji can't take care of when he gets back. Go check on your mate." Anna said watching the torn look on Amaris' face. Amaris looked back and gave Anna's shoulder a squeeze, and then hurried to Lyle. Amaris dropped to her knees between Lyle and The King's corpse. Lyle was breathing. It was as if he was asleep. Amaris knew that he must be like the others that she had brought back. It would drain her of her energy to do it. Then she took a look at the area around her. There were so many men and women that were injured and needed help. She knew that Taji could not do it all on his own. Amaris thought about how to heal them all for a moment, and then came up with an idea. She took a deep breath and closed her
Alexis and Andreas' men were attacking in their wolf form. They were coming in from every side, and from the look of it they had The King's men out numbered. The clearing was in an uproar with men and wolves everywhere. Before Amaris knew what was happening, Lyle had transformed into his wolf and leaped between her and The King. His muzzle wrinkled as he bared his teeth and growled in warning. The King looked at him and merely laughed. He reached behind him and grabbed the staff that he had back at the palace. Lyle seemed to recognize it and backed up a few steps. The King laughed at his retreat. "Smart lad. Hand her over and I will not have to use it." Lyle backed up a few more steps and this time he leaned into Amaris pushing her back too. The fighting was still going on around them. Many of The King's men lay upon the ground, and most of the rest were fighting two or three wolves now, since they were severely out numbered. Amaris saw that many of the wolves were making their way cl
Lyle walked around the back of the house to the UTV as the truck drove away. He climbed in and looked at Amaris. "Decoy." He said with a thumb over his shoulder. "Where did you find him? He looks like your doppleganger." Amaris asked amazed. "Funny thing. When I went to get some of those items that we needed earlier, he was the supply clerk that helped me. I asked him to help me out this evening by taking the truck out for a test drive to see if the repairs I made earlier are going to hold. I told him I needed to drive a short way behind to see if it was okay." Lyle laughed again. "So that poor guy has no idea that he is bait?" Amaris was getting ready to get out of the UTV. "I did tell him that since we were hiding out that we need to be extra vigilent for the possibility of attack, which is more likely since we have been here for a while." Amaris got angry. "Lyle, that poor man could get killed because they think that he is you!" She turned and yelled at him. "We
Amaris' mouth hung open for a moment, and then anger grew. "Who? Who whipped you?" Lyle turned to look at her, then down to the floor. "Adam and Sveta. They were made for each other. They are equally twisted and driven by their need for power." Lyle said with a dismissive tone and then almost mechanically started taking the rest of his clothes off. It was clear that he did not want to continue this conversation any further. Amaris walked over and lifted his face to hers from his bent over position. "I'm sorry." She said in a whisper that cracked from the emotion behind it. "I did not want any of this, least of all for you to be hurt." she kissed his cheek tenderly. Lyle dropped the clothes that he was holding and put his arms around her. "This is not your fault. Don't ever think that. This is not something that you chose. You were as much thrown into this as the rest of us. This is all the fault of the ones who have greed and lust in their heart. The ones who have
Lyle dropped it back into the pack and put a few things in from the pile that he had set aside to go into the truck. Then he grabbed the pack that Amaris was filling and sorted through her things. He found a tracker there too. "Well, at least we know it wasn't Kliman. He never touched your pack." Lyle said as he moved over to the doorway of the barn. Sitting against the wall of the barn were a few dozen hiking packs waiting to be filled. Lyle grabbed two from the end and handed one to Amaris. "Fill them with everything that you will need. Only one extra set of clothes, and a couple extra pairs of socks and underware. Food, and matches, and so on." Lyle was moving so quickly that Amaris was not sure what to grab first to stay out of his way. "Quickly! We need to do this before he gets back, or anyone else comes along and sees us." They both hurried and filled their packs and then Lyle took them both and told Amaris to stay there and he would be right back. While Lyle wa
When Amaris' hand touched the young man's arm she suddenly was transported to another time. It was night here. There was the unmistakable sounds of fighting. Growls, and yelling all around her. The young man that Amaris had just been talking to was in front of her hiding behind a tree. He held some sort of black box in his hand and loooked to be waiting for something. "Where are we?" She asked the young man in a whisper as she stepped closer to him. The man did not respond. He did not even look at her. She reached up to tap him on his shoulder. Her hand went right through him. Amaris jumped back startled. She stared at her own hand, and then tried to touch the tree next to her. Her hand passed through that too. She took another look around her. She realized that the man standing next to her was speaking. "They are leaving now. Green transport truck. She is hidden in the back under the tarp. Out" The man said. He was putting the box away and turned to leave in th
Amaris stood there frozen and watched the back of Gran as she walked out of the room. She slowly sank back down on the couch next to Lyle again. He still had not moved from his spot, but seemed to be in deep thought. Amaris brought Lyle out of his stupor by grabbing his hand. "Did she just say what I think that she said? Are we going to have a baby?" Amaris thought about what Gran had said 'Little ones'. What did she mean? Was she talking about our children in the future? Amaris felt just like she often had lately after talking to Gran, more confused. Lyle took a deep breath and turned to Amaris. "According to the tapestries that we saw earlier, you and I will have one set of twins. A boy and a girl. Like you they will also have powers. Which means that like you they will also be hunted by others for what they can do." Lyle hung his head. He did not want to think about his children being hunted anymore than he wanted to think about Amaris being hunted. Now it was Ama
Amaris sat back and looked at Gran who had a big grin on her face. Anna walked over and squeezed in between Lyle and Amaris. "Sorry Romeo, but we need to get this meeting moving, and you just can't help yourself." She said patting Lyle on the shoulder at his disappointed look. Lyle rubbed the back of his neck again and smiled raising his hands in the air. "Got me." There were a few laughs and then everyone turned back to Gran. "Well, as I was saying. We will be splitting up." Everyone gathered around her nodded. Gran had presented this idea already, and no one seemed to disagree with her. "Lyle you will be taking Amaris and hiding. NONE of us is to know where you are." Amaris' eyes grew wide and worry now crept in. Up to this point she had been able to stay safe because she had the help of a lot of people. She did not want anyone else to die, and she was afraid that she would get Lyle killed if he felt that he was her only line of defense. Gran pointed a finger at Amari
