Michael

We sat down and I got right down to it. The sooner we could be done with Sal, the better. The waiter brought a round of waters for the table and Sal ordered a scotch on the rocks.

“I’d like to know the long term interests of your plan,” I said. “Where you’re looking to go when it comes to expanding your franchise.”

Sal nodded a few times before answering. “Absolutely. I’m hoping to start off in New York then branch out to the other big cities. Los Angeles, Chicago…” he trailed off. The mere mention of Demetri’s city intensified the sick feeling in my stomach.

Sal’s plan was what I’d been afraid of. If his proposal was to happen, he was going to be in direct competition with Demetri in more than one city. I knew I had to report this to Demetri sooner rather than later. I didn’t plan on getting Sal any properties but I had to appear as if nothing was out of the ordinary. How did I get involved with this again? I glanced over at Rainey who was none the wiser.

She asked him a few

RaineyI started to catch onto Michael’s mood swings. He went from frustrated scowls to brilliantly happy smiles within seconds. The meeting with Sal Rossi had been strange, to say the least. I thought at any moment they would whip out dueling pistols and have a showdown. There was something off about their relationship yet they still kept it strictly professional. It wasn’t my place to interfere but I wondered why he would take a client that was in direct competition with his brother’s club? Maybe he thought the City was big enough for the both of them? Or maybe he was so money-hungry that he would take any client no matter what. Though, from what I knew of Michael, he was a smart businessman. There was something else going on but I didn’t dare ask about it. I was too green in this position to interfere. And as much as I questioned a lot of things he did, I’d wait until I proved myself enough to ask the more penetrating questions of his business. He had been gracious to answer everyt

RaineyThe kids were so excited to see Michael. He was attentive to them and not just to be polite he was sincere in his dedication to these children. I could see Michael having a brood of attractive children; it was quite sad that his wife had passed, he would have made a great father. Watching him with the kids made me envision the father-figure I’d always hoped for Tanner. But just my luck that my son was stuck with a deadbeat for a father. We stayed and talked with the kids for almost an hour before Michael wrapped up our time with them, much to their dismay.By the time we said goodbye to Rachel, my cheeks hurt from smiling so much.“What did you think?” he asked when we got back into the elevator.I let out a breath. “That was amazing. I’m so thrilled to be a part of it.”He smiled. “That’s good to hear.”“You made such an impression on those kids.”“It’s nice to give back.”I couldn’t help but laugh at his modesty. “Give back? You’ve done way more than that.”“I have the means

MichaelI could tell Rainey was impressed by me getting my usual table at Vista. This was something expected from the other women I took out. While I didn’t think she expected that from me, it was refreshing to see that difference in her. With each new experience with Rainey, I realized I liked her more and more.Other than her physical attractiveness, I found her strong, independent and kind, everything I would want in a woman. Too bad I didn’t meet her at Kadia or anywhere else in the City. Being her boss made my attraction to her much more difficult. If she were interested in me, I’d find a way around all of the red tape for her. There weren’t any other women I was willing to do that for.“I had such a great time this afternoon,” she said while looking at the menu. “Rachel is fantastic. She’s very sweet and I’m happy to work with her on this.”Her foot bumped my leg under the table. I glanced down and her foot was shaking as if the events that day had energized her.“I’m glad you f

  • Money Can't Buy Love   What We Could Do in the Bedroom

Michael“Five bedrooms isn’t that small you know.”It was small compared to my apartment and any other vacation homes I owned. I’d found the house in Bar Harbor a quaint getaway in the spirit of the closely-knit community.“How many bedrooms do you have in your house?” I asked. She wet her lips again. “Two bedrooms. But it's no summer home.”“I’ll take you up there sometime. It’s really quite peaceful.”“I thought you didn’t take guests up there,” she teased.“If all goes well with the Christmas charity, maybe I’ll consider you spearheading that one as well.”“I don’t know,” she said, clicking her tongue. “What could I possibly do with five bedrooms all to myself?”I thought of a hundred things—or positions— we could do in those bedrooms. I pushed that thought out of my mind, keeping myself treading on the line between professional and personal.“I’d come with you the first time,” I said. “To help settle you into the role.”“I’m not a fan of flying,” she said.“That’s one trip I like

RaineyEven though I’d only been in the workforce for over a week, the early mornings had started to take a toll on me. That’s why when I slept an hour past my alarm, I woke up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated for the busy morning.Tanner and I met Mom in the driveway around eight.“You’ve only been working there a little over a week and he gave you a day off? What a good boss,” Mom said as we got into her car.“I don’t have the day off, Mom,” I said, checking to make sure Tanner didn’t unbuckle his seatbelt before we got out of the driveway. It was a daily struggle to keep the belt on him. He didn’t understand that it could save his life. “I have to be in the office at noon.” Michael had a morning meeting with someone and said I wasn’t needed until later. It worked out perfectly for me to attend the Christmas program at Tanner’s school. He’d been disappointed when he realized I was going to miss it since normally I’d be at work, but when I told him the change in plans, he gave me th

RaineyOnce we arrived back in my apartment, I only had fifteen minutes before I had to leave for work. I checked the train times again to make sure I didn’t miss the right one. That would be my luck to be given the morning off and then come into work late. After the interview, I made a silent promise to myself to never be late for Michael again.Tanner tossed his coat onto the kitchen table and started for the kitchen. “Come on, Grandma! I’m starving and I want to try out a new recipe.” He kissed his fingers and gestured them in front of him. “Magnifique!”I stifled a laugh. It was the signature line from his favorite chef on The Food Channel.“I guess I better get in there before he burns himself,” Mom said, kissing my cheek. “See you later, dear.”“That or the house,” Tessa said.Mom pulled a face and rushed in after Tanner.Tanner’s last attempt at making a recipe from The Food Channel resulted in the kitchen smelling like burned hair for an entire day. MichaelI replayed the phone call between me and Demetri over and over in my mind on my way to work Friday morning. It had been a short one, as these particular ones usually were.“Am I right about this?” he’d asked.“Yes.”A long pause then, “I’ll handle this.”We had no idea who was listening at any point which was why he preferred to meet in person for the more important and secretive meetings. Demetri had come up against authorities in the past involving a phone tap. He was back in Chicago, so there wasn’t a possibility of a face to face conversation.I’d come to the office early that morning, wanting to get out of my apartment. I had a nervous energy that I tried to get out by exercising. When that didn’t work, I had to occupy my mind. I thought by searching for some listings for Sal I could create a good alibi for myself. If anyone linked me to his death then I could claim I had no idea.See detective, I was searching for listings all morning. Why would I do that if I knew he wa

MichaelAs the thought crossed my mind, my cell phone rang. The vibration moved it across my desk and a similar vibration took hold of my body. Demetri’s name stared up at me from the screen.I grabbed the phone and shoved my chair away, it rolled in a wide arc away from my desk. “Excuse me, I have to take this.”I left the office, closing the door behind me as I swiped my finger across the screen.“Hello?” I said, not wanting to identify the caller for Sandra or Rainey to hear. I hustled down the hallway into one of the conference rooms, closing that door behind me.“Good morning, Michael,” Demetri’s said over the line. The calm in his voice was like the still waters of Bar Harbor. A longing to go back swelled inside of me.“It’s afternoon here now,” I said slowly, waiting for the ball to drop.“You know that issue with real estate we were discussing?” he asked. “Real estate” was code for Sal.I sighed. “Yes.”“I closed the deal,” he said. “I wanted you to be the first to know.”“I a

  • Money Can't Buy Love   Epilogue

MichaelA year ago, I never thought I’d return to Bar Harbor with a woman. Sure, I wanted my new assistant to handle the charity event up there, but not as my partner. Tanner took off ahead of us, dodging the cold Maine water as it slid up against the shore. He collected the shells under the muddy surface. Those were the best ones he’d said. The hidden ones. That little guy had something right. You needed to work for the things that were worth it in life. And I worked hard to get Rainey and Tanner into my life. While it didn’t take much convincing after we got everything out in the open, I thanked whoever was watching over us that I found what I needed in life to be happy. If anyone had asked me if my happiness involved a single mother and her child, I would have laughed in their face. But Rainey and Tanner were what I was looking for since Cynthia died. And I couldn’t be happier. Sometimes I thought about my life before them, and a sick feeling accompanied the thoughts. So I tried no

RaineyThat was so soon. “I’m not sure,” I said, glancing over at Tanner. He was pointing to the polar bear and saying something that I couldn’t make out from that distance. “As I’ve said, I’ve already been away from Tanner too long since we just got back.”Michael chuckled, and I narrowed my eyes.“What’s so funny?” I asked.Michael pecked me on the lips. “I want to take Tanner with us.”“Oh!” I said.Michael shrugged. “I could take you both skiing, or we can hang out at the lodge. There are some places in town I’m sure he would like.”“That’s so gracious,” I said. Tanner would love to come, especially since Michael had his own plane. Tanner would be so excited. I wonder if that would ruin him for commercial flights, but to be honest, it ruined me for them already. I didn’t say it aloud, but this reminded me of having a family vacation. A real one. And I could count on Michael to follow through, unlike Killian with his grand plans and no follow through.“We should go tell him then?”

RaineyIt took me almost a week to get used to the weather back home. The vacation with Michael was the perfect escape, and I never wanted to go back. Michael remained professional in the office. At least during office hours. It took him until Tuesday at six, when Sandra had left, to christen our relationship over his desk. While I did prefer the comfort of bed, making love with Michael in more public spaces really turned me on.There was no more hiding, and I could finally be completely honest with him about every aspect of my life. I never did that with Killian. Maybe I thought I did, but after being with him for a while, I started to keep secrets from him. Secrets about how I felt and what I did when he wasn’t around. I opened up to Michael like never before, and that led to a comfort in our relationship that rivaled my feelings toward my flesh and blood family. Michael integrated himself into our family in such a short amount of time. Mom and Tanner loved him. And while Dad tried

MichaelAfter spending the entire day on the beach, I was wiped by the time dinner came around. Rainey and I packed our things after making love one more time that morning, so we were ready to leave after the last glass of wine was poured. There wasn’t a moment during the car ride, boat ride, and flight that we weren’t touching each other. I held her hand as if it were my life vest in a vast choppy ocean. Even though we declared that we wanted to be together, I still felt a little unsteady. I wanted to test our capability as a couple when our lives were back to normal at home, but at the same time, I didn’t want to jinx anything.Rainey brought out a lot of first-time emotions from me. I actually felt nervous when we departed the plane and headed for my car. Constantine waited for us with the back door open.“Hope you had a nice trip,” he said to me. Then he smiled at Rainey.“We did,” Rainey said and took my hand.Immediately, my fears were squashed. She had a way of anchoring me and

  • Money Can't Buy Love   Waking Up Together

MichaelI woke the next morning with the best feeling inside of me. A ball of hope and happiness filled my insides. I couldn’t remember the time I felt this much at peace with someone other than Cynthia. Her memory was still strong within me, but Rainey was a new chapter of my life, and I had to allow her to take precedence over my previous wife. I had to. It was the only way I could commit to her completely. I said a silent final farewell to Cynthia, knowing that we were both in a better place. Me, here with a perfect woman, and Cynthia in a place without pain and suffering.I slowly turned over, careful not to wake Rainey. She looked peaceful. Her thick blonde eyelashes fanned over her eyes, and her mouth was open slightly as she breathed deeply. She was still sound asleep. I doubted she would wake if I touched her, but I didn’t dare test that theory. She deserved to rest. After everything we put each other through and the heavy fucking session we participated in last night, I wante

RaineyMichael lifted one of my legs and scooted closer. His tip pressed against my lower lips and I sucked in a breath as he entered me. He filled me quickly, and I gritted my teeth as my body adjusted to his length. He slowly moved inside of me, pressing deeper with each thrust. He trailed a finger over my face, moving my hair away, tucking it behind my ear.His eyes locked on mine and I couldn’t help drawing my lip into my mouth, sucking on it as he continued to move inside of me.His gaze fell to my mouth, and he leaned forward, sucking on my bottom lip.I wrapped my arms around him, feeling the tensing of his back muscles under my fingertips. He kissed my neck, slowly pressing his lips against my skin. The movement of his tongue on me made me shiver.I pulled back, wanting to see his face. I felt his pleasure when I sucked him off earlier, but I loved seeing him turned on. The usual blaze his in eyes was like an inferno, burning me from the inside out.“Touch yourself,” he said.

  • Money Can't Buy Love   The Taste of Him

RaineyMichael’s kiss seared me inside and out. I was happy he removed the covers, I was already on fire from his touch. I came into his room to tell him how I felt, and for once, he was the one to speak first about his feelings. He wanted more than just sex. We were on the same page with everything. That’s all I needed to hear from him to make my choice. The weight of his body on me squeezed the air out of my lungs, but I didn’t want him to move. Every part of him was hard. He was the strong man that I’ve always wanted, inside and out. We had our differences, but they were petty compared to the passion we had for each other.Michael’s hands roamed my body as if he painted every part of using his hand as a brush. Heat licked over my body at each place he touched, creating a pool of molten lava in my center. He tugged at the thin straps of my night gown, one at a time, exposing each of my breasts. The cool air in the room touched the peak of each one, tightening and hardening them.My

MichaelI debated pushing the envelope. What did I have to lose? We already kissed so I knew she felt something for me. She might not be ready to commit, but with Rainey, it seemed she needed a small shove in any direction to go anywhere beyond her comfort zone. And then the words tumbled out anyway. “Is there any more of your heart to spread around?”Her eyebrows drew together. “Why do you ask?”“You, Rainey,” I started, locking eyes with her. “You’re the first thing I think about each morning.”Her eyes widened.“I think about you all day. And you’re the last thought I have before bed.”“You do?”“Yes,” I said. Why did she think so little of herself? How many times did I have to remind her of my affection for her? “I wanted you back at work so I could be close to you even if that meant we weren’t together. I want to be with you. So badly. You have no idea what you do to me. I had to work extra hard just to be your boss, but I want so much more. And I have a feeling you do too. I wan

MichaelAfter our kiss and discussion about Rainey’s past, while we were on the private beach, the gap in our relationship had lessened. Though afterward, we shared a relaxing dinner by the pool and didn’t mention any progression for ourselves within that relationship. After putting myself out there, I felt a little exposed, but I didn’t push her. Sure, she had told me her ex was a dick and that her son was the light of her life, but she had to work on her issues before we made ourselves official. She knew my feelings. I had to trust that she would come back to me when she was ready. When dinner was over, Rainey stood up and excused herself. She kissed me on the cheek, an apparent rejection after the kiss we had in town, and went into the house.I sat by the pool, finishing my whiskey and contemplating life. I hadn’t remembered feeling this way since I first dated Cynthia. The anticipation of what the other was thinking drove me insane. I could have drunk the rest of the night, but I
