ELLA'S POV

I was startled awake by the sound of Ivy's excited yell.

"Daddy!"

The word echoed in my sleepy mind, pulling me from the remnants of a dream. My eyelids fluttered open, and I was met with the blinding morning sunlight pouring through the window. A disoriented yawn escaped me as I stretched, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. My body felt heavy, reluctant to leave the warmth of the bed, but Ivy's voice had already set the day in motion.

I dragged myself out of bed and padded softly to the door, curious about what had her so excited this early. As I reached the hallway, I froze, my breath catching in my throat at the sight before me.

Xavier, in all his strikingly handsome glory, was crouched down on the floor, playing an energetic game of hide and seek with Ivy. The way he moved with grace and ease, his sharp features softened by a rare smile, made it hard to believe this was the same man who usually exuded such coldness. Ivy was giggling uncontrollably as she darted around th

ELLA'S POV "Trust me, Ella. You have no idea what’s coming."A cold gust of wind hits me from behind as Xavier's words sank deeper into my mind. The pen in my hand now felt chillingly cold, my pulse racing as I turned my gaze back to the view of Xavier, my husband or should I say, my contract husband. The main reason I agreed to marry him was to secure my daughter's future. I had no other choice, a contract marriage with Xavier seemed to be the only way out. Our marriage, according to the contract's rules, didn't harbor any forms of emotional entanglement. Xavier's gaze held mine as he walked closer. My neck hair stiffened upon his presence as I started up to be met by his electrifying green eyes. My breath came out in shallow pumps as he closed the gap between us. I tried to pull backward as he pulls me closer causing me to run into his hard chest. "I'm not playing your games Xavier," I mustered, the words skittering out as I watched him break into a dark chuckle. I expected him

XAVIER'S POV.I noticed the flutter in her eyes as I pulled back. "Oh, but I do, Ella. And soon, you'll see that for yourself." I heaved gruffly turning in the direction of the exit. I led the way as Ella followed, and in no time, we were at the parking lot where the car had been parked. As we proceeded towards the car, I couldn’t help but notice the uncertainty flickering in her blue eyes. The hesitation, the way her lips twitched as if she wanted to say something but held back, only made me want her more. My gaze drifted down to those cherry-red lips, so soft, so perfectly kissable. I knew exactly what they felt like, and the memory made something primal stir inside me. She had no idea how easily she drew me in, how every little movement, every unsure glance, made me want to pin her against the car and kiss her until she was breathless. Her body was irresistible, curves that fit against mine like they were made for me. I imagined those same lips parted in pleasure, gasping my na

ELLA'S POV "IVY IS MISSING!" The babysitter's voice pierced through me like a knife. My jaw fell slightly as I tried my best to have a grip over my emotions but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I felt a spasm of pain reflect over my shoulders as my breath hitched in my throat. "What do you mean, she's missing?" I heard Xavier's voice pierce the thin silence that braced my ears. I jolted back to reality, the panic gripping me. "We left her in your care," I pressed, my voice trembling. The babysitter’s face crumpled, her eyes welling up with tears. She looked helpless, and for a split second, I felt sorry for her—but fear quickly drowned out the sympathy. My chest tightened as I glanced at Xavier. His face had darkened, and his jaw clenched so tight I thought it might crack. "How could you let this happen?" His voice was low but carried a dangerous edge, sharp enough to make anyone shrink back. He stepped toward the babysitter, his presence filling the room with tension.

ELLA'S POV And then, just like that, a memory sparked in my head. "Sweet Swirls," I whispered, barely audibly.Xavier raised an eyebrow. "What?""She loves going there. The ice cream place. Sweet Swirls." The pieces clicked into place in my head, and for a moment, I had a glimmer of hope. "It's where she always goes when she's upset. I should've thought of it sooner. We didn't spend another second, bolting to my rusty old car. Xavier stopped and eyed it disdainfully, but I couldn't care less."You can either get in or you can stay here," I snarled, wrenching open the door.He slid onto the worn seat, didn't say a word. We peeled out toward Sweet Swirls, my old car protesting the strain. Xavier didn't say one word during the ride, but I can tell he looked over a million times at me, thinking of a hundred things, yet not saying anything. My hands were tight on the steering wheel as I zoomed he car past the streets, my mind consumed with thoughts of Ivy.We finally reached the destinati

XAVIER'S POV I heaved a slight sigh as I drove the car into the clear street walk of the estate, my estate. My hands clutched tightly on the steering wheel, my mind a thousand miles away and bogged down with the weight of all that happened today-marriage, Ivy, the omen of a storm about the president's request-assailed my attention with gnawing tenacity. As I approached the McKinney mansion, the familiar iron gates swung open with their usual mechanical precision, ushering me into the world I’d always known—a world built on legacy, power, and control. The McKinney estate stood before me like a fortress, cold and imposing against the night sky, a reminder of the weight I carried. My grandfather’s legacy. My legacy.I parked the car and stepped out, straightening my jacket as the mansion’s towering facade loomed above me. This place, my family’s empire, had always felt like a battlefield—one where only the strongest survived. My jaw tightened as I approached the grand doors, pushing t

CHAPTER 34ELLA'S POV I strode toward the car, the weight of my grandfather's words still lingering in the back of my mind. The old man rarely showed vulnerability, and yet, tonight, he'd let his guard down just enough to remind me that the world wasn't as safe as it seemed. Not for Ella, not for Ivy—and not for me.Just as my hand reached for the handle of the car, a voice cut through the silence of the night from behind. "Xavier."I froze. Instantly recognising the voice all too well. Lucas - my uncle. I turned slowly, my eyes locking onto his. He approached with that same smug look he always wore, like knowing something no one else knew. Irritated me, though I'd never show it."Off already?" he asked, stopping a few steps short of me. "I was hoping to catch you before you disappeared. There's a party coming up. Business, of course. Some powerful people you should meet. Thought you'd want to bring that new wife of yours."I tensed at the mention of Ella. His tone was too smooth, to

The following evening came sooner than I had thought, and while I stood in front of the mirror, my fingers nervously fidgeted with the hem of the simple dress chosen. I stared at my reflection, feeling a bit uneasy. Tonight was different-there was an unfamiliar weight to it, almost as if something was brewing from under its core, and I hadn't had a single hint as to what it was.I glanced over at the time and beckoned towards the clock. Xavier had told me to be ready by seven and of course in true Xavier fashion, he was prompt. When I came out of the bedroom, he was waiting for me at the foot of the stairs, leaning against the railing. My breath caught for a moment. He looked… well, he looked like sin wrapped in a tuxedo. The black suit fit his broad frame to perfection, his sharp jawline set in that cold, masculine way that always made him seem untouchable. Dark strands of hair were neatly combed back, save for that one rogue lock falling across his forehead and lending him that edge

XAVIER'S POV Claudia being here tonight was the last thing I expected to see. Sitting there, having to watch her saunter away after snide remarks to Ella, that old irritability surged right through me. The harder I seem to keep my past at arm's length, there Claudia was, crawling out of the shadows like a ghost I'd wish would finally disappear. I should've known better. I should have known better than to think a person like her wouldn't find a way to just pop up no matter where I went. That woman always did find ways of resurfacing at just about the time when I thought that she was gone for good.Claudia… She was one of those exes I wished I could eradicate from my life, someone whose persistence rivaled a damn cockroach. However many times I reiterated to her that things between us were over-long over-she continued snuffling around, trying to scratch her way back into my world. I didn't do well with loose ends, and Claudia was just that. A loose end that would not quit. But what in

XAVIER'S POVThe rest of the run from the meeting room to the mansion was long. My family wasn't going to be split apart by their baseless act.I was going to get back at Madame Browne for what she did to me.That was a promise. I would keep it dear.I sprinted past the office of the receptionist and her voice beamed from behind as I halted to a stop. “Mr Xavier!” Her tone was high pitched with an edge of worry and concern flashing in it. I turned steely with my chest heaving heavily as I stared at her. “What is that?” I prowled through gnashed teeth as I paced towards her. I walked all the way to the counter and banged my fists on the counter. “Speak up!” My voice thundered a

MADAME BROWNE'S POV I sat down on the chair near the snack table with a gleam of satisfaction washing through my veins as I gripped a nearby glass of wine from the snack desk. This was going to be fun.I could already tell.I watched the shareholders all gather around Rochelle like moths to a flame, feeding desperately on the flickers of lies she distilled. They were fools but it felt good to finally make them all my fools.A dark grin tugged at my lips as I raised the wine glass to my lips. My eyes were fixed on the scene, watching the one drama I'd prepare myself for beforehand. To the shareholders, this was a shocking revelation that urged them to have a rethink but to me? To me, this was like a drama, a scene I'd orchestrated for days. Everything went right, Rochelle did extraordinarily well and I gotta stay under the spotlight and so did Lucas. The shareholders had all fallen into our traps and all I had to do right now was to sit back and relax. I could beat them at their own games, it wasn't too late yet.I moved to the other side of the room where the shareholders were gathered around the pregnant lady that stood her ground that I was in a relationship with her.She was crying, soft fake sobs tearing through the air as I smirked. The gazes of the shareholders flickered sharply over to me and I felt waves of shock trudged down my spine as I felt my body freeze rapidly. “Before you all jump to conclusions I believe we first have to go over the basics first,” I beamed and caught a glimpse of shock and anger in Madame Browne's eyes. I could've sworn I heard her grunt before she cut me off, “Oh what basics Xavier? Can't you just own up to your mistakes already and stop trying to turn the tables when we all know that you did all she said you did!” The tension in the air rose alongside the voices but I ignored them all, focusing m

I wanted to do something but it would only get worse.Madame Browne's paid actress was acting so good that anything I said or did wouldn't be believed by the shareholders. They'd all snagged up her words as she delivered them, delivering her lines with an Oscar worthy performance.I stayed frozen on the spot, holding on desperately to the last fading threads of restraint I had left in me. My eyes were flushed with rage and my fists were balled up like I was about to start a fight.I couldn't afford to have them trample over me like that. I had to do something— anything!I paced towards the shareholders, snagging the pictures from their hands as I inspected everyone. As I glanced at them, I felt a flush o

She was here.I raised my hand immediately like someone in a trance as I flashed my gaze at her. She was standing proudly at the other side of the kitchen counter where I was chopping the cabbage. Her eyes loomed over me like a laser and I just couldn't help but frown in shock and confusion. What did she mean by what she was doing? Why was she staring?Madame Browne was never the one to stare at one, especially when I was doing a chore. The receding beeps I used to feel in my chest now faded off and I could've sworn I had an out-of-body experience with the lady. The raging sounds of gasps from the shareholders faded off and I felt myself loosen into a void, one where I'm stuck with the pregnant lady standing nearby. I could sniff her cologne from where I stood, it had a cheap air to it that turned my stomach. XAVIER'S POV I could feel it in my veins. The president was hiding something from me and I won't stop until I find out what exactly it is. I clenched my fists for a second, following him with a thin gaze. I traced his movements down to where he arrived at the door where a masculine figure stood. Lucas. A wave of disgust crashed in me and I sniffed softly, the intensity of his gaze brushing through my skin. His eyes loomed brighter than any light I'd ever seen. His stance was a perfect replica of a predator, dark green eyes that burned right through me.The cold wind in the room crashed into me as I felt my neck hair stiffen. The room was silent for a while save for the soft screeches of the president's wheelchair. He was about wheeling out of the room when I opened my lips and called for him. “I’ll help you with that.” My voice tore through the fog of unspoken tension and I walked over to to where he stood.I stretched my hands and gripped the handles of the wheelchair before pushi

I clenched my fists and eyed the car one last time. The bright red color of the car glistened hauntingly, shining like something cut out from a expensive antique collection magazine. “So what do you say, Xavier?” Madame Browne's voice sliced through the fog of tension that encircled me. My fists tightened even more as I released a low grumble feeling emotions that burned me hard in the chest.I remembered each and every words of the president the time he told me about my parents. I dreaded the car so much I had the president place it among his fleet of antique collection at the back row of the parking lot just so I wouldn't be able to see it.I felt my body release a spasm of pain upon the numbing mockery in her voice.
