"You're not going to back out, right? " Jaxon asked, his voice soft yet carrying a hint of concern as we stood outside his mother's house. The place was grand, as expected, with high stone walls and a perfectly manicured lawn. I couldn't even imagine what it must've cost to keep it all running.

I turned to Jaxon, still wearing that smile he'd had all afternoon, but his eyes showed a flicker of uncertainty.

"I'm not backing out," I said, bumping my shoulder into him teasingly. "But are you sure about this? Your mom can be." I allowed my voice to trail off; there was really no nice way to say what I was getting at, but he knew precisely what I was driving at anyway. "I know. But we're doing this: you, me, and her. All three of us. It'll be fine." He said it like he meant it, but I knew better. Jaxon's mom, Celeste, was a woman of high expectations, and I wasn't exactly her favourite person.

If anything, I'd gotten the sense she hadn't warmed to me since that first meeting, and now-what

"Okay, close your eyes."I furrowed my brow and looked up at Jaxon, wondering if I'd heard him right. We'd just gotten in the car after leaving his mother's house, the tension still hanging in the air like thick fog, and now he was asking me to close my eyes?"Jaxon," I began, a little unsure. "What are you—?""Just trust me," he said, with that warm, playful grin that reassuringly made me feel everything was going to be OK. "It's a surprise."Sighing, I leaned back against the seat, deciding to play along. "You know, I'm still recovering from the disaster that was dinner. You owe me big time," I teased in a light-hearted way, but couldn't quite shake off residual discomfort from that evening.Oh, I know," Jaxon said amorously, his voice riveting into her very soul. "I got this. Now close your eyes.I hesitated for a beat before obeying, willing to let him have his moment. A few minutes of silence passed as the car hummed steadily along the road. I could feel my pulse quicken just a l

  • Mommy, I found us a Daddy for Christmas    Hazel's sudden illness

I had sat on the sofa, playing indolently with my phone when I heard the noise: some heavy body had hit the ground and the next was the groan-muffled cry of pain. My heartbeat stammered once and the moment this feeling struck, a hoarse sharp, panicky voice cut across all sounds that Jaxxson yelled in,"Isabel, get in here!" His voice was raw with fear, the kind of fear I'd never heard from him before. It sent a jolt of adrenaline straight to my chest. I didn't waste a second. I jumped up onto my feet, my phone discarded, and ran into the kitchen.Hazel lay on the floor, her face white, her hand clutching at her chest. She was inhaling in quick, shallow gulps, and her body seemed to quiver, as though she couldn't still it."Hazel!" I shrieked, dropping down onto my knees beside her. "What happened? What's wrong?"She looked up to me with big, scared eyes, barely working her lips. "It hurts. Isabel.I glanced up at Jaxon, whose face was a mixture of horror and disbelief. His hands were

The hospital was quieter now. The frantic beeping of monitors, the murmur of nurses walking past the hallway, the occasional shuffle of footsteps in the sterile, gray hallways. But in the room where Hazel lay, everything felt too still. Too quiet. The lights above flickered dimly, casting shadows that seemed to stretch longer and longer as the hours passed.I sat next to Jaxon, my fingers nervously twisting at the edge of my sleeve. His eyes hadn't strayed from Hazel since we'd arrived. The only sign of life in the room was the steady rhythm of her breathing-slow but there. He hadn't moved, hadn't really spoken, except for the sporadic whisper to her, asking her to hold on.It was like she just wasn't answering. Probably could hear him; probably couldn't. I don't know, all I know is the weight in that room was a lot to take on. Difficult to breathe here, almost like the air was just way thick and strangling. This unknowing kept chewing at me and digging inside just like it had Jaxson.

  • Mommy, I found us a Daddy for Christmas    Sleeping nights

The waiting room in the hospital was quiet, the only sound coming from the hum of the fluorescent lights above and the shuffling of feet down the hall. The air was stale, disinfectant hanging heavy, mingling with the faint scent of cold coffee from the vending machine nearby. The chairs were uncomfortable, plastic, cold, but I'd lost all energy to give a damn about such things now. Here I was, just like every other night, waiting for some sign, some good news. It never came.I pulled my knees to my chest and rested my head on them. The tears had come, and they didn't stop. At first, I tried to ward them off-wipe them away the second someone appeared-but eventually that became too exhausting. I just couldn't keep it inside one more second. I was utterly exhausted. Between these last couple of days, it was starting to feel as if the weight was crushing me, and how long I would be able to keep up appearances that I was okay was anybody's guess. The cold, hard truth was that Hazel wasn't

It is so funny how it all changes in a split second. A blink of a second, one short second might just alter the air around to turn the familiar world into something different altogether.I hadn't planned on it, and hell, I don't think either of us did. There we were, both exhausted, hanging onto each other in the sterile quiet of the hospital waiting room-a place that felt more like a prison than a place of healing. The tension between us had been building, not just over the last few days, but longer-under the surface, always there, just waiting for the right moment.Jaxon's arms were still around me, his hands stroking the back of my neck in slow, soothing circles. It wasn't like he was trying to push anything on me; it was just. comforting. It felt like a lifeline in the midst of the chaos. He didn't need to say anything; his presence was enough."I just…" I started, my voice breaking. I didn't know what I was trying to say. I didn't know what I needed to say. The words were caught

The steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the room. But for the first time in days, the rhythm wasn't frantic or desperate; it was normal-steady, almost calm. A heartbeat, a life force, something that had seemed so fragile for so long now had some strength to it.I stood by Hazel's bed, my hand wrapped around hers, staring at the rise and fall of her chest in a steady rhythm. It was as if finally, I was able to breathe again. Is she going to be, okay?" Isabel's voice came from behind me, soft but full of worry. She stepped into the room, her eyes scanning the monitors before landing on Hazel's face. "I mean. she's not." Her voice broke, and I could hear the weight of the fear that had haunted her for the last few days.I turned toward her, flashing a small, reassuring smile. "She's going to be fine. The doctor just said she's stable now. It's a good sign.Isabel didn’t say anything, but the way she exhaled told me everything. It was like she’d been holding her breath

I don't know what it was, but the moment I watched Hazel's eyes flicker open, something changed. The burden of the last few days felt lifted off my shoulders, like I could breathe again. Yet, there was one thing that hadn't changed, no matter how much the world seemed to right itself. Isabel. It wasn't that things were bad between us—far from it—but the tension which had been in the air prior to Hazel collapsing hadn't dissipated by that time, not by a long shot. I could still feel the walls she had built around herself, like she was holding herself back from something. So, when I decided to take her out to dinner to celebrate Hazel's recovery, I really wasn't expecting fireworks or confessions. Actually, all I wanted was to spend time with her, trying to break some of those walls down. Remind her that I was here. Not just for Hazel-but for her.I stood in the kitchen, leaning against the counter, waiting for Isabel to get ready. The apartment was quiet, and the air had that heavy fee

Isabel hadn't expected to see her again. Not here. Not now.Lauren stood by the entrance of the café, a smirk playing at the corner of her lips like she knew something Isabel didn't.And maybe she did.Isabel huffed, her jaw clenched, hauling her mind back to the coffee in front of her, deliberately trying not to rise. The last thing she needed was to give in to Lauren when things were, for the most part, normal. Well, normal when she and Jaxon were. Whatever they were. And yet, amidst so much calm, practiced, modulating tone, came the honey-slit poison cut-through voice of Lauren."You know, I was wondering when we'd run into each other again."Isabel exhaled slowly, then looked up. "Lauren." No warmth. No interest. Just acknowledgment.Lauren slid into the seat across from her like she belonged there. "You look good.""I know." Isabel took a sip of her coffee, keeping her expression neutral.Lauren laughed, tilting her head. "Still sharp. I like that.Isabel leaned back, crossing h

Two more snows had fallen. The members of the international class noticed that ever since Maureen returned from the final round, the atmosphere between her and their "boss" seemed to have subtly changed. Before the final round, they seemed inseparable, obviously lovebirds. After the finals, who knows what happened? Or if it's just their imagination, but Maureen appeared to care more about their "boss," almost like an eagle protecting a chick. For instance, their class advisor, Teacher Logan. Because of Liam, Teacher Logan hadn't received a performance bonus in three years, and his resentment was more than justified. Finally, after Maureen transferred into their class this semester, the number of incidents involving Liam dramatically decreased. Teacher Logan thought he could relax a bit, but the last school celebration performance was unexpectedly changed by Liam! The school leaders were furious. Now, this month's bonus was gone again! Teacher Logan was so enraged with Liam th

The two hadn't had their fill over there, so they decided to cook some noodles when they got back. "I'm actually a little angry." Maureen stirred the noodles in the pot with a long pair of spoons, her tone still choked with emotion. She avoided looking at Liam, her eyes lowered on the boiling water and the tumbling noodles in the pot, her eyes rimmed red, "I asked you before, about the wound on your neck, you told me that the instant noodle glass bowl exploded! Do you have no heart, no feelings?" Maureen couldn't help but drop her Spoon. She should have realized it long ago, she had been living there for so long, and she had never seen Liam eat instant noodles - his refrigerator was completely empty, not a single instant noodle or glass bowl, what noodles was he supposedly making?! Liam was always lying to her! Seeing Maureen crying all the way back in the cold wind, her eyes swollen to the size of walnuts, Liam felt deeply distressed. He lightly patted Maureen's back, trying t

Maureen was the first to take a bath. After Liam entered the bathroom, Maureen wandered around the apartment in her fluffy pajamas, bored out of her mind. Being in love is such a fascinating thing. Before, besides studying, she found dramas and games enjoyable. Yet, after falling in love, when he was not by her side even for a moment, she got bored no matter what she did. Nothing was as fun as spending time with Liam. She wanted to do everything with him, whether it was watching dramas or eating. Just one glance from him, and her feelings could experience the dramatic waves, drowning in the deep ocean, the best bite of a summer watermelon, or the tartest segment of an orange. The spacious apartment changed gradually after Maureen moved in. Maureen was like an invader, painting the previously icy and quiet apartment with colors everywhere. She was afraid of the cold, so Liam always had the heater on, causing the previous bone-chilling feeling to disappear. She was afraid of t

There's a small step at the entrance where shoes are changed. Liam leans on the shoe cabinet to stand up, and Mr. Boris carries his wheelchair in. Liam hops up on one foot. He glances at Maureen, trying to hop in a nonchalant and handsome manner. But how cool and handsome could he possibly look hopping around on a single foot? Liam feels a bit embarrassed, murmuring discontented, "Who decided to put this step here?" Maureen watches from the side, her heart pounding. She subconsciously raises her hand to help him, fearing a second injury due to a slippery tiled floor. However, Liam, who seems to intentionally show off his skills, or something like that, refuses her help and smoothly completes a series of movements. Maureen: "Once he's up, Mr. Boris quickly pushes the wheelchair behind him. He holds onto the handles, sits back down in the wheelchair, raises one plastered leg, and with great effort, positions his plastered foot correctly. He then raises his handsome eyebrows a

The next day, Teacher Logan specifically noticed that it was again Maureen who was pushing Liam's wheelchair into the classroom. The group of boys in the class were extremely envious, while Liam coolly tucked his hands into his pockets, raised his chin, and wore noise-canceling headphones around his neck. He looked both arrogant and pleased. Liam wished he could show off Maureen to the entire world. Teacher Logan, on the other hand, was extremely frustrated. Right after the class, Teacher Logan asked Maureen to his office with a stern face. "Has someone been bullying you in the class recently?" Maureen was taken aback,?" No." Teacher Logan sighed deeply and said, "Maureen, you can tell me if someone is bullying you. I will back you up." Maureen thought for a moment and really couldn't think of anyone who could bully her. In fact, when she transferred to the international class, she had made the most important decision to stick with Liam. This could be the so-called stra

The three of them came out of KFC, it was so blistering cold that Liam put Maureen's hand into his own pocket. Niel, with his sharp eyes, suddenly called out to Maureen and pointed in a direction with his milk tea in hand, he said: "Am I seeing things, or is that Bianca? Is she dating someone now?" Bianca's contract with the talent agency, Maureen heard about it too. For the past month, Maureen had barely seen Bianca in school. She seemed to have disappeared completely from her sight, someone she used to bump into every few days on the streets. The main reason was that even though the controversy of the true and false heiress was over, Bianca still faced some stares. If it wasn't for the sake of graduation, Bianca wouldn't want to attend school at all. She spent most of her time in society, working. So, seeing Bianca again out of the blue at the school gate was quite a surprise for Maureen. She followed the direction Niel pointed and glanced over. Outside Secondary School wa

"Sir," The butler came in with a phone in hand. "The hospital replied they are willing to sell, but," Under Augustin’s gaze, he swallowed hard before continuing. "The price is three times higher than what we previously sold it for." "Three times?!" Victoria widened her eyes in surprise, her voice sharp. "This is downright robbery!!" Augustin’s eyes darkened, his face looking extremely unsightly. "Did they specify why the increase in price?" "They said someone is willing to purchase at a high price, which led to the price hike." The butler nodded affirmatively. "So, do you still want to buy it?" Augustin pressed his lips together. Before he could even speak, Victoria on the side grabbed the opportunity to interject. "We cannot buy it,” There was a hint of anger on her slightly chubby face. "Augustine, we can't be the scapegoats." "What do you know?" Augustin looked at her with deep, mysterious eyes, his voice icy. "In a few days, it will be grandpa Luther's birthday ban

The house was dead quiet. The type of quiet that feels too still, as if everything were holding its breath. The letter had left its mark, but I tried to shove it away. We'd already been through enough, and I refused to let something like this get the better of us. Jaxon was right; it was only a prank. Nothing more.Already Hazel had gone to bed, which left Jaxon and me still sitting in the living room trying to process it all. I was holding our son, this tiny little ball of a boy cuddled into my side, his soft, light breath a reminder of the fragility but beauty life had become. And in this uneventful drive home, at least, I felt normal settle over us.Jaxon sat across from me, his eyes scanning the letter again, as if willing it to change. He shook his head, running a hand through his hair. “It doesn’t make sense. Who would want to hurt us now?”I shrugged, glancing down at our baby’s sleeping face. “I don’t know. Maybe it’s someone who never really let go.”He let out a deep sigh. "

Laughter and murmurs of quiet conversation filled the house. It was so still, so right with the world. I had never felt this relaxed in my life. I was seated on the couch, Hazel perched on the arm beside me, as we watched Jaxon bounce our son in his arms. He looked so natural with the baby, like he had done this all his life. And in many ways, he had-just never with a child of his own. But that didn't matter. We were here, together; our little family was complete."Did you see the way he smiled?" Hazel laughed. "He's definitely a charmer. Takes after his dad."Jaxon was smirking, rocking the baby gently. "I think he is more like his mom. Look at those big eyes."I grinned, knowing full well what he meant. The baby had my eyes, sure, but he also got my stubbornness. I could tell that already. But before I could answer, there came a soft knock on the door. I turned, wondering who it could be. It was still early, and I wasn't expecting anyone. Jaxon stood up, a bit too quick, and I caugh
