Amelie had taken a taxi straight to the Arnuad Estate after dropping Michelle and Miguel at their school. As The taxi drove past the iron gates, she couldn't help but feel a sense of dread wash over her.
It was unusual for her father to demand so adamantly that she returned home after what he had done eight years ago.
For a fact, she knew he didn't feel guilty but she had to come for her mother's necklace.
'What a pain.' Amelie thought as her taxi came to a stop in front of the grand Arnuad mansion.
She paid the driver and stepped out. The house was still the same old grey, emotion-deprived mansion she'd grown up in. Even though she'd been gone for 8 years, nothing much had changed. There was no warmth and no comfort. It was cold and empty.
Amelie decided to retrieve the necklace quickly. She had no intention of staying here for any second longer.
With a steeled mind, Amelie approached the door and was just about to ring the doorbell when her father pulled the door open.
"Amelie, you came!" He greeted, putting on a smile that was way too unsettling for Amelie. She quickly realized that it was a fake smile. "Welcome. Tea has just been served in the dining room, how about you join us?"
"Tea? Like hell I would." Amelie snarled. "I'm here only for my mother's necklace, now where is it?" She asked while stepping into the house.
"Straight to the point, eh?" Fernando mused. "Your mother's things are in her room, I didn't touch a single one as said." He informed.
Amelie didn't wait a second longer and began walking up the stairs, toward the room where her mother's things were being kept. In her desperation to get her hands on her treasured necklace, she had missed the glance exchanged between her father and some men in black suits.
Amelie finally arrived in the room where her mother's things were being kept. Just as her father had said, all the things were still intact.
Amelie breathed out a sigh of relief and for a second, allowed her eyes to roam the familiar structure of her mother's room.
The familiar Italian chairs, the dresser, and her old rocking chair. All those things brought back good memories as Amelie drug her fingers against the furniture.
Finally, her eyes landed on the large wooden wardrobe, and with a gentle smile on her lips, she approached it.
She opened the wardrobe and pulled on a lower drawer, exposing a smaller wooden box with cursive writing on the top.
Amelie ran her finger along the cursive words that her mother's name had been written in before gently pulling the wooden box open, a smile basking in her lips when she found the sapphire necklace lying unbothered in the box.
"Found it." She breathed happily. At least one good thing had come out from her coming to this accursed house.
Just as she was about to pull the necklace out of the box, a sharp blow suddenly a spot on the back of her neck and she collapsed to the ground.
"Good job." Her father's voice rang out as his footsteps approached her. "Bring the doctors in."
Immediately those words left the man's mouth, and a few experienced doctors barged into the room, carrying medical kits with them, which they later placed beside Amelie's body and unzipped it. They began inspecting her as if she was some sort of corpse.
"How is it?" Fernando asked, appearing behind the doctors.
"Alright, we just need to extract a few bags." The head doctor responded, glancing at Amelie who they thought was fully unconscious. "She will be out of consciousness for a few hours."
Fernando nodded and with a satisfied smile, watched as the doctors began drawing blood from Amelie's body.
After the blood draw was completed, Audrey and Chloe walked in and laughed loudly seeing the state that Amelie was in.
"My god! It's so fresh to see you being reduced to nothing." She mocked, bending down beside her half-unconscious stepdaughter. "Didn't you dare threaten me yesterday? Now look where you are!"
Chloe suggested. "Father, wouldn't it be too much of a waste to throw Amelie away without any gain? Shouldn't she be put to more use?"
"How so?" Fernando asked.
"Didn't you say that you were recently undergoing a business deal with Mr. White?" Chloe started. "Wouldn't Amelie's body be a good bargaining tool for you to have a successful deal?"
They were planning on doing what?! Amelie couldn't believe what she was hearing as she slipped in and out of consciousness.
Her father was planning on selling her body to some stranger to complete his business dealings? Again?!
"That's an excellent idea, Chloe." Audrey praised, nodding at her daughter's suggestion.
"Then let's have Mr. White come to pick her up." Fernando decided, a sly smile playing on his lips. "Also, make sure she's drugged. We don't want her escaping and ruining the plan."
Fernando walked out of the room and Chloe and Audrey snickered wickedly as they approached Amelie, eyeing her half-unconscious body.
"Who would have thought that you'd turn out to be so useful after showing up? Don't worry Amelie, your father and I are going to put your body to good use." Amelie wanted to resist but she once again felt herself falling unconscious.
The last thing she remembered before completely p*ssing out, was the sharp prick of a needle in her arm and Audrey's maniacal laughter.
In a five-star hotel, Eric anxiously paced back and forth at the presidential level. He couldn't understand what was happening. Just yesterday his boss had been fine and then suddenly, his condition came back today. And the doctors were stumped too.Stopping his pacing, Eric gently cracked open the door to check up on his boss. Zacharie was slumped against the bed's wood frame amongst all the wreckage and destruction in the room. His eyes were half open as he looked up at the ceiling. The poor guy was drenched with sweat and numerous scars marred his body and on the exposed corners of his neck were black pulsing veins that wrapped around his body like beautifying vying. However, what they brought was far from beauty but rather an unbearable amount of pain to Zacharie."Mr. LaCroix?" Eric called out hesitantly. "Please hang in there, Madam Aubert will soon be here."The blood of Mr. LaCroix's fiancée was said to be the only thing that could ease his illness. They were waiting for her b
"Yes?" Zacharie asked. The stranger opened his mouth to speak when he spotted the woman lying in the chair behind Zacharie. His eyes widened and then hardened a few seconds later."Her, Amelie Arnaud, I'm here to pick her up." He said, not taking his eyes off the woman."What?" Zacharie asked, glancing back at the woman in confusion. "What do you mean? Who are you?""Ah, forgive me for not introducing myself. My name's Skylar Hargreaves, a close friend of Amelie's." He introduced. "Now, would you be as kind as to hand her over?""And why should I do that? How am I even sure that you're her friend?" Zacharie asked, narrowing his eyes suspiciously at the man.Skylar reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He tinkered with it for a few seconds before flashing it in Zacharie's face.A picture of him and Amelie. They both were in the park. The man's arm around the woman's shoulder while she leaned into his embrace with a heartfelt smile on her lips.Zacharie's brows knitted toget
The room instantly fell silent after the slap. Skylar stared wide-eyed at the scene, while the men behind Zacharie were too shocked to react.Amelie herself was surprised. She had not meant to slap the man, her palm had moved on its own accord.Suddenly, Zacharie looked at her and his face was grim. She flinched upon seeing this and some part of her began regretting her action, however, the other side of her fought hard against that other side, refusing to allow her fear to win.Zacharie had disrespected her. Those words he had said and those absurd *ssumptions he had made were all way too over the line.Who was he to say that she had an affair with that greasy old Dylan White just for money? He didn’t know the full story and had no right to judge! This was just one out of the many reasons why she'd much rather be fed the dishes than stand by and allow him to spill such nonsense! And if there was one thing she had learned well in recent years, it would be that quietly tolerating insul
Miguel knew this because when he had woken up earlier in the day for school, he found Amelie acting weird. From her body language and behavior, he could tell that she was annoyed and skeptical about something. However, when he had asked if everything was alright, Amelie just ruffled his hair and told him that it was a matter concerning adults and that he didn't need to worry.Worrying about his mother, Miguel had secretly placed an invisible camera inside the purse she had carried out earlier and then he heard the evil plans of Amelie's stepmother and sister and immediately called Skylar.Of course, Amelie didn't know this and the children weren't planning on revealing this anytime soon. But then that would mean that he had to stay silent.Watching as Miguel refused to speak, Amelie spoke up. "Miguel? Don't you like this necklace? It's a precious belonging that my mother left for me. It once belonged to your grandmother."Miguel looked up at his mother and bit down hard on his lower l
Amelie's eyes grew double in size and she was made speechless upon seeing Zacharie, the same could be said for the crazy lady who slowly backed away, cowering."M..mr. LaCroix." She stammered, her body trembling as if noticing the presence of Zacharie, the city's lord of wealth."Are you okay?" Zacharie asked Amelie and she reluctantly nodded her head, grip tightening on his jacket.Zacharie then turned his gaze towards the woman and narrowed his eyes."You," he said and the woman flinched."I'm sorry! I apologies Mr. LaCroix! I wasn't aware that she was your acquaintance! I'm really sorry!" The crazy woman babbled on in fear. She was aware of how much power Zacharie held in the business world and if he so much as blow wind into the ears of others, her husband's business was sure to collapse and her family would then be really ruined. She had to avoid that fate at all cost!Bowing her head low, she apologized once more. "Please forgive me. It won't happen again!"Zacharie stared coldl
Zacharie's brows furrowed upon hearing the news."What do you mean it's been hacked? How the hell could that happen?" He asked."I don't know Sir! All I know is that I was on my lunch break and when I got back, the entire system was scrambled. All the data is currently messed up!""What?" Zacharie exclaimed."I called the technical team and they said it's the work of a very skilled hacker.""d*mnit." He cursed and then sighed out. "Don't touch anything, I'll be there soon." He said and ended the call, stuffing the device back into his pocket."I have to go," he said to Amelie and turned around, heading for the door.'Oh thank God,' Amelie thought, relief washing over her when she saw him leaving. However, he suddenly stopped just a few steps from the door."One more thing," he said. "I hope during our next appointment, you'd take my words much seriously."And with that, he stepped out of the examination room. The nurses which were waiting outside quickly bowed their heads as he walked
"Thief?" Amelie frowned at the words, confusion written all over her face."Mommy," Miguel tugged at the sleeves of her shirt. "It isn't true." He said."I know dearest," Amelie said and then turned back to the adult, raising her voice. "I beg your pardon, but I think you've got something wrong. My daughter is no thief.""Really? Cause my son here had his ice cream stolen by her." The woman said, pointing at the male child which was standing just a few feet away from her.Amelie glanced between the mother and son pair, refusing to believe what she was hearing. For one, She had raised Michelle in the best way, making sure that stealing wasn't part of her virtues and secondly, with no more than a glance, Amelie could tell that the pair of mother and son was trouble."Look here Ma'am, I think you have got something wrong. My daughter would never steal from someone even if she wanted what the other person has." Amelie said and the woman gasped, offended."How dare you! Are you calling my
In surprise, both their eyes grew and Michelle pointed at Zacharie."Handsome uncle, what are you doing here?" She asked.Zacharie nearly chuckled at the fact that Michelle had called him handsome, but also frowned slightly when realizing that she had called him uncle, indicating that he looked much older than his age.He didn't dwell too much on that however, he instead decided to focus on answering her question. He took the seat opposite them and folded his arms across his chest. "That video, the one from the school which is now circulating online, that was your doing, yes?" He questioned.Miguel's eyes widened and terror could be seen clearly on his visage.Oh no, was Zacharie going to tell his mother about the video...and his secret? He couldn't help but think.Zacharie saw the look on Miguel's face and laughed. "I'm not going to tell on you, so you can calm down.""You're not?" Miguel asked, as he tilted his small head to the side in confusion.Zacharie shook his head. "I'm not."
Florida was a place more comfortable than Amelie could have expected. It had sunny beaches and humble neighbors and fresh air.Although it could not hold a candle when being compared to the beauty of Paris, she was growing to love it here and it was growing on her children as much as it was growing on her.Two years, Amelie and the twins has been living in Florida for the past two years, and in these two years, she had managed to find a job and earn a lot of money and even opened her own hospital. The children were enrolled in a private elementary school each in their final years of elementary and they were having a blast. It was perfect and Amelie couldn't be more happier. At least, that's what she wanted to believe. She had a feeling her happiness was yet to come, but for now, this would have to do."Mommy, when's dinner?" Miguel asked as he stepped into the living area, Marco following closely behind.Marco was the German shepherd they had adopted upon moving to Florida. Amelie had
The week following the whole disastrous event was unnaturally peaceful.Amelie didn't complain as it gave her enough time to secretly look for a new place for she and the twins without them knowing anything about it and it also gave her enough time to gather her things and once again, secretly some of their. The reason why she was doing things in secret from them was because the last time they had moved from England back to France, the twins had thrown a fit, refusing to leave after just settling down perfectly in their new school. And right now, it was a silly case of Deja Vu.“Not gonna go around and say your farewells." Florence asked as she slipped Into Amelie office while she was packing the last of her things."I'd rather not." Amelie replied, glancing around."Well, at least bid me goodbye." Florence said and opened her arm for a hug.Amelie chuckled and went in, encasing the younger female in a p*ssionate hug for a few seconds before dressing back."You'll make an amazing team
Amelie arrived home later than day with a puffy face and red eyes. The lights were off and the house was quiet. It was obvious that Miguel and Michelle were fast asleep. Gently tip toeing over to their room, she cracked the door open slightly and stepped inside, seating at the edge of their bed and stroking their head gently, not wanting to wake them."Michelle, Miguel, mommy won't be able to make your wish come true. You won't be able to have Zacharie LaCroix as your new daddy." She whispered."Mommy will be the only one to be there for you from now on." She promised, the words leaving a sour taste in her mouth. She didn't want to be the only one, she wanted Miguel and Michelle to have a happy family. Just like the dream she had of them all being in one big happy house."I'm sorry, guys."As she apologized, a tear rolled down her cheek and landed on the bedsheet, staining the fabric.Wiping the remaining tears, Amelie leaned forward and kissed her children's forehead, smiling slightl
Zacharie was stunned to hear what she was saying.Eight years ago?He had forced himself on her? Had they met the first time back in the scan room? That didn’t make sense. He hadn’t even been in any woman ever since that night and that woman had committed suicide, had she not?“what the h*ll are you talking about, Amelie?” He finally asked, his brows deepen in confusion.“Don’t play innocent with me, Zacharie. I saw the tape. I know it was you.” She said, taking a step forward and jabbing her index finger into his chest.Zacharie’s eye twitched and he grabbed her hand. “Look, I don’t know what kind of nonsense you’re spewing, I haven’t slept with any woman in eight years, not even Odette.”“Liar.” She sneered and ripped her hand out of his grip. “You’re a lying scumbag. I’m not the only one that knows the truth.”“The truth?”“That you tainted an innocent girl, Zacharie. That night, I begged you to stop. I knew nothing of my step mother and sister’s plot and I begged you, I tried reas
"Zacharie LaCroix." Amelie uttered, her voice barely above a whisper. "Zacharie LaCroix..."As the video continued, and showed the two of them leaving the hotel, Amelie remained speechless, her mind a mess and her body unmoving. Her thoughts were jumbled and she felt the need to throw up.How could she not have seen it?It was obvious from the beginning. Now that she thought hard about it, Miguel was similar to Zacharie in some ways. The mole underneath his eyes, the same eye colors and even Michelle had some similarities to him. They both shared the same blood diseases.Like father like daughter.Just the thought of that alone almost made Amelie throw up."Oh my God." She breathed, finally standing up.Her legs were shaking, her hands trembling and she was sure her heart was beating fast."Calm down." She whispered to herself. "Calm down, it's not real. There has to be an explanation for all of this." She re*ssured herself and stood up, stumbling ever so slightly in her steps and nea
Zacharie kept true to his words, because two days after the entire incident, he showed up at the hospital, ready to begin or at least finalize the procedure of his new treatment plan."So, how is this going to work?" Zacharie asked, leaning back in the chair as he stared at Amelie."Well, the plan is very simple and straightforward, and very easy to execute." Amelie explained. "We'll have you come here and inject a serum I will prepare. This will be a one time process and will only last about thirty minutes.""One time?""Yes." She confirmed. "The serum is simply to cleanse your inner system. After that, a blood transfusion would follow.""I see. And then?""After the transfusion, there will be a period of recovery and rehabilitation, but it's not really necessary. We can skip that step. I'll provide you with some tablets that will help with the process and that will be all." She concluded."However, there is just one problem.""What is it?" Zacharie asked, sensing the worry in her vo
"This is all your fault." Odette accused, turning to glare at Amelie. "I hope you're happy now. You ruined everything. Not only did you cost me my engagement, you also had the guts to show up in such a revealing dress and try to seduce my fiance. What a shameful b*tch.""Odette that's enough!" Zacharie fiercely demanded. "Haven't you done enough?""You're right. I have. And I'm sorry. It was just... vitamins I slipped in. I went to the doctors the other day and they recommended some vitamins for you. But I knew you wouldn't take anything that has not been prescribed by your doctor so I tried to slip it in. I'm really sorry." Odette begged."Just vitamins, huh?" Zacharie asked and snapped his finger. Instantly, Eric appeared with the gl*ss of wine and handed it to Zacharie. "If you say so, then drink it.""W-what?""Drink it." Zacharie repeated."I-""I'm sure there's no harm if it's just a few vitamins.""Zach, are you kidding? It's a full gl*ss.""It is. But if it's just vitamins, li
"This drink is contaminated?" Zacharie questioned. "What do you mean by that?""Well the thing is..." Amelie began, looking like she was hesitant to speak. "The thing is..."Before she could complete her word this time around, Odette quickly took her hand and dragged her away."What are you doing? Let go." Amelie demanded, trying to pull her hand free.Odette did not comply until they were separated from the crowd, standing someplace near the balcony."What are you doing?" Amelie asked once more."I could say the same for you." Odette challenged, folding her hand over her chest."What?" Amelie blinked twice, not understanding."Why did you say that the drink is contaminated? What's your purpose for lying?""I didn't lie." Amelie retorted, clearly remembering what she has seen when she stepped out of the balcony.Odette had dropped something into the wine gl*ss, and although Amelie couldn't figure out what exactly it was, she wasn't about to just let Zacharie drink whatever concoction
Over the weekend and until she was discharged, Amelie continuously told herself not to misunderstand Zacharie's words. He had only said all that in a bid to calm the rowdy twins down and it meant nothing. She continued to tell herself that, dissuading both her heart and head from growing any sort of attachment to the words that meant nothing. That reality however, was smacked even harder in her face as the day she got discharged and went home, she was met with an invitation letter from Odette. Her birthday was tomorrow and Zacharie was holding a banquet for her and she had been invited.Staring at the letter in her hand, Amelie felt sore. She had nearly forgotten the fact that Zacharie had a fiancée who loved him very much. Not only that, she was pretty and kind and everything in all that could make a perfect wife. Unlike her, an already spoilt product.Amelie gritted her teeth at the comparison. Why was it angering her so much? Why did it have to do with her if Odette was a perfect w
