Cael didn't like attending the social events that members of his class kept springing up. They were monotonous, had the exact same faces and always ended with him parting with an outrageous sum of money for one outrageous cause after the other.
But when you belonged to the economic class that Cael belonged to, attendance was almost mandatory. Tonight it was a fundraiser for patients with cancer, at least it was a worthy cause. Now, Cael didn't care much for social rules and cues and whatnot so he hardly ever attended no matter how many invitations he got. None of it appealed to him. It never had. Not the peacocking, not the mindless conversations and not even the attention he could never really avoid.Even now, the birds were swarming. Cael kept his face straight and his eyes constantly moving so that an errant glance wouldn't be taken by the roosts as a signal to approach. His disinterest wouldn't keep them away for long though, he could tell.Already the excitement was mountain. The sound of churlish giggling carried over the soft music in the room over to him, and there was a lot of strutting, hair twirling and not very subtle sly looks being thrown his way.Cael's plan was to get there late, drop off his contribution and hightail it out of there as soon as possible. Already, he was two hours late. Whether or not the rest of his plan would work out that way remained to be seen."Cael!"He heard his name and turned to meet his friend and the host of this event. "Armani," he said in a deep, low voice."I'm so glad you came," Armani said pleasantly. She opened her arms and he stepped forward to hug her, placing a gentle kiss on her lips. There were several eyes on them and most of them weren't pleasant. Without turning around, he knew the source of the unhappy looks was 'the birds'. They needn't bother themselves because there had never been and there would never be anything between him and Armani. They had an easy friendship and nothing else despite her exquisite, exotic beauty. They'd been friends for a long, long time and that was the only reason why he was here. He could refuse many invitations, but Armani's wasn't one he could refuse."Of course, I came. It's your party," he said."Fundraiser," she corrected calmly, slipping her hand around his and gently leading him into the room. "It's a fundraiser, not a party.""It's a fundraiser party," he challenged. "More emphasis on the party too."Armani laughed, her voice tinkering like a bell. He looked down at her by his side and took in her face. He felt a swelling of pride and protectiveness. Armani was a gorgeous woman and the sweetest person he knew. Many men would fall over for her beauty if not her money. He'd always seen her as sort of his younger sister and had always been protective of her. Armani had lived a very sheltered life from birth, the apple of her billionaire father's life. She was naive to the ways of the world. Cael had resolved that one would take advantage of her when he was alive. She was also the only woman who could make him do anything he didn't want to do. Just like now, she was taking him with her from one guest to the next, subjecting him to the sappy, mindless conversations he so desperately wanted to avoid. But still, he waited patiently by her side, responding adequately whenever necessary."Is your father coming?" He asked once they were alone again."No," she answered, smiling and nodding to someone off at the side. "He's not in the country right now. He's off on one of his business trips again." She sighed."I'm sure he wanted to be here," he assured her."Well, you're here with me so everything is fine." She smiled up at him briefly before turning her attention to the next guest. He greeted the guest and mentally withdrew himself from the conversation. Thankfully, they were too caught up in their conversation about cancer to bother with him.Devlin allowed his mind, and his eyes to wander around the room. His eyes fell on the birds who as always were circling not too far away from him. He let his eyes sweep over them. Perhaps he should give himself a treat. If he was going to subject himself to more hours of this (which was looking likely now that Armani had picked him as her chaperone in the absence of her father), he might as well allow himself a reward.Any one of the girls would do. They were all pretty enough. From the loaded looks they were giving him, if he took them home, they would know exactly what they were doing. Maybe two, instead of one? There were two who caught his fancy more than the others. One of them was a blonde, the other a brunette. Call him predictable, but they were easy enough marks. And more importantly, they were willing. He didn't have to waste time cajoling, not that he ever had to anyway.Having made his choice, he dismissed them from his mind and allowed his eyes to continue to scan the room casually. He saw a lot of very familiar faces, some he had been intimate with at one time or the other. If he happened to meet their eyes, he nodded briefly before continuing his scan.At the far end of the room, his eyes fell on a beautiful girl with long black hair. She caught his attention because of how excitable she was but she held his attention because of her beauty. Oh, perhaps he would be changing his mind about the blonde and brunette after all. She would do nicely. His eyes moved slightly to the side and that was the moment when he finally saw her. Oh, she caught his attention all right; the girl with the fiery Auburn hair. He'd almost missed her standing there...almost. She was trying to hide but how could you hide when you looked like that? Now that he'd seen her, he couldn't 'not' see her. He could only see her side profile from this angle. He willed her to turn around, or at least for Armani to wrap up the mind-numbing conversation and move along so he could see her from the front. Finally, the conversation ended and Armani moved towards another guest but Cael steered her unyielding in the other direction and stopped only when he had a good view of the lady from the front. Needless to say, he was not disappointed.Armani gave him a look but he ignored it and she was soon distracted by another guest. Good. The lady was the epitome of beauty and desire. He couldn't take his eyes off her. She was gorgeous. Even from this distance, her hair stood out like a curtain around her face. And her eyes...she had big, grey eyes like a cat.She was here with the other girl, the beautiful black-haired girl he spotted earlier. They were talking to each other now. As he watched, they were stopped by a woman he recognized, Mrs Smith. She was recently widowed. Good for her. She deserved the old bastard's money after putting up with him all those years. She hugged and kissed Mrs Smith and sadly, turned so that her back was facing him how. He grunted impatiently. Still, he'd seen her and it was impossible not to remember every detail. She was seared into his memory. She was breathtaking and...and she didn't want to be here, he realized. Maybe it was because of her choice of a sparkly knee-length dress with wrist-long sleeves or the severe way she twisted her gorgeous auburn hair up--or, maybe it was the slightly uncomfortable look that she was trying to hide, but he could tell. Her choice of outfit, her hair, her understated makeup and the look on her face made it obvious to him that like him, she didn't care much for this event. She didn't belong here either. She was not one of them. She didn't belong to their social class. So who was she? Why was she here? And why was she trying so hard not to draw attention to herself?Suddenly, she turned around and scanned the room. Her eyes passed over him once but then rolled back to land squarely on him. She must have felt his gaze on her from across the room. Another man would look away when caught staring but not Cael.He held her gaze squarely, letting her see that she'd caught his attention and he had no plans to walk away without doing something about it. She got his message all right. She murmured something to her friend and began to edge her way out of the room.Cael smirked. She was running away like a scared little bunny. Oh no, you don't! He wasn't about to stand by and let her escape. "Come on, Armani." He dragged Armani away mid-sentence and began to angle his way across the room in a measured manner."You're not going to get away so easily," he thought.Mikayla angled her body, trying her best to pass through the crowd without brushing against anyone. She needed to get out immediately. It was irrational, it was probably unnecessary, but all she knew was that she had to get away. She'd never felt anything quite like that before. It felt like a thousand ants underneath her skin where his eyes touched her. She needed to get out and catch her breath. She risked a look in his direction to see if he was still looking.Oh no, he wasn't just looking at her now. He was actually following her, barraging through the crowd at an angle that ensured that he would reach her before she reached the door. No! No! No! She increased her pace, and from the corner of her eyes, she saw him do the same.Who was this man anyway? Why was he following her? She couldn't risk another look at him. It would slow her down. She shouldn't have come. She silently cursed Anna's persistence. Now she was being chased around by a staring psycho. She briefly considered bre
Mikayla whirled around. Her eyes immediately landed on the lean, handsome man in front of her. Her heart raced at having him standing in front of her, so close that she could reach out and touch him. It didn't help that those piercing eyes were on her either.Mikayla gulped. It took all of her mental strength to keep her mouth from dropping open like an idiot. Up close, he was even more handsome, nearing perfection. His perfectly shaped jaw stood at a proud angle. His skin was clear and bright like a woman's. His eyelashes were long and curled. With eyelashes like that, you constantly wanted to reach out and stroke his face. They were the only thing that softened his harsh features. Without those feminine eyelashes, his eyes would look too scary. Even now, they were piercing and hot. Mikayla mentally shook her head. She needed to get herself together. He was looking at her expectantly as though waiting for something. What was he waiting for? Oh, right. He asked a question. What was
Move, Mikayla. Turn around right now and leave! He's giving you a chance to walk away, you idiot. Leave, damn it! But Mikayla didn't leave; couldn't leave. She continued to stand there like an idiot. When enough time had passed that it was clear she wasn't going to leave, he smiled. "I'm glad you decided to stay."Mikayla groaned in her head. "Well, I'm not glad but my body wouldn't listen to me," she thought but didn't say it out loud."We should talk outside, away from the noise...and the probing eyes." He shot a meaningful look into the crowd.Mikayla looked up just in time to see eyes darting away from them because of the look he gave them. She needed to get out of there immediately. She nodded. "Let's go." She followed him out of the hall and into the night. She expected him to stop in front of the hall or a small distance from it but he continued to march on like a man on a mission. She had no choice but to follow him. For the first time, it crossed her mind that this man could
After the declaration, Cael didn't move. He just sat there and watched her face. He wanted to see her reaction before doing it. The way he phrased the statement showed that he was resolute about kissing her, but he still waited for her permission before doing it.Perhaps that was what got to Mikayla or maybe it was the fact that she'd also wanted the exact same thing all evening as much as she may deny it. Mikayla closed her eyes and slightly tilted her head. There was no more hesitation from him after that. That was the kind of man he was, she was coming to understand. He decided what we wanted to do and immediately plunged head-first into it.He grasped her face firmly in his palms and pulled her head closer. His lips slammed down on hers. There was nothing gentle about the kiss, just as she'd expected. It was hard, it was demanding and it was unyielding. His lips forced her lips apart and thrust inside, quickly ravishing her mouth. Mikayla moaned against his lips. She met his deman
Cael woke up instantly, coming alert the moment his brain woke. He was acutely aware of his surroundings as always and knew without opening his eyes that he was alone in the car. The woman had vanished. He sat up and scanned the beach, hoping to catch a glimpse of her escaping but she was nowhere to be seen. How she managed to get out of the car without rousing him was a mystery to him. What was she, a nymph? That would explain the uncharacteristic effect she had on him. She'd done nothing less than bewitching him without even lifting a finger. He never slept so deeply that he became unaware of his surroundings. She would have moved around, maybe gotten dressed, opened the door and left and he hadn't felt anything? It just went to show how much of an effect she had on him. With her in his arms, he'd slept like a baby. He couldn't remember sleeping that deeply in a very long time. And that had cost him. She was gone, vanished into thin hair. He ran a hand through his hair. It was a ha
Mikayla knew exactly what she had to do, what she desperately needed to do. But yet, her heart felt heavy. Don't be stupid, she told herself. She had to disappear, and immediately. To get herself going, she repeated the words that had plagued her mind from childhood over and over in her head like a mantra."The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."Spurred into action, she moved quietly but firmly, first locating her bra, then her dress. But her panties were nowhere to be found. She couldn't risk searching too vigorously for it or she'd end up waking him.She pulled on the bra and the dress as quietly and calmly as she could. This was a car so if she moved around too much, it would shake and wake him up."The apple doesn't fall far from the tree."Heck, she'd have to leave the panties behind if she wanted to be gone before he woke up. There was no telling how long he would sleep for. If he woke up before she left, there would be no escaping. If there was one thing she'd learnt about
"Oh, look who it is," Anna said derisively.Mikayla paused in the process of sitting down. Oh, oh, Anna did not look happy! Her friend was the kind of person who was always an open book. If she felt something, she said it loud enough to hear. She's happy? She's a bright butterfly brightening everyone's day. She's feeling prissy? She's pissing everyone off all day. She's unhappy? You're unlikely to miss it. Thankfully, that didn't happen often. The girl seemed to have a real gift for unending optimism and happiness. The issue starts when she's pissed at you? You would know it. She would tell you off quickly and sharply. Mikayla was nothing like that. She's learnt at a young age that her emotions were things to be kept hidden. The only way to survive was to be as nondescript as possible. Explosive outbursts of emotions would get her unwanted attention. Whether she was happy, sad or angry, she approached everything with a hard-won calmness.Anna was the opposite. She'd never learnt th
Mikayla was looking right into the handsome face of Antoine Moreau. She simultaneously sagged with relief and huffed with disappointment. What was wrong with her? Why was she disappointed? No, she was happy that he-who-must-not-be-named hadn't found her. "Hello, Dr. Wall," Antoine greeted, pulling her from her thoughts."Mr Antoine, how are you? I hope there's no problem." She walked further into the room, making straight for her desk.He mirrored her movement, leaving the spot where he stood at the window and going to take a seat as well."I am good, thank you. I returned with your drink yesterday but you looked...somewhat busy," he said.Mikayla blinked at him in confusion as she once again tried to piece together the events of the night together. Oh, right! Before Cael approached her, she'd been with Antoine. He'd left to get her a drink but before he returned, Cael had hijacked her. She hadn't thought about him much after all.Mikayla sighed. How many explanations and apologies w
Mikayla watched as the maid diligently turned the pot of soup. "I think you should add some more water," she directed."Yes, ma'am," the girl said and went to grab a cup of water from the tap."Mummy! Mummy!" Mikayla looked down at the kid pulling frantically on her cloth. "What is it, Abe?" She asked."Can I turn the soup too?" He asked, giving her a big smile. His adorable face made her smile. She shook her head. He knew exactly what he was doing! The boy was too aware of his own good looks. He thought it could help him get away with anything and get anything he wanted."No, Abe. You can't and you know it," she said."But mummm! I'm a big boy now. I'm seven years old," he argued. He'd only turned seven three days ago and already they'd heard that fact at least a million times. It came up in every argument including when it was his bedtime, when he needed to eat his vegetables and just any other time he could squeeze the argument into."Seven is too young to play around the sto
Mikayla looked at herself in the full length mirror and smiled. 'You look very beautiful,' she thought to herself. 'And I'm so proud of you.'She'd come a very long way from the scared little girl who lived everyday in fear of people finding out her true identity. Now, she was a strong, beautiful woman with a thriving career and an amazing boyfriend. And today, she would be celebrating another incredible milestone in her career at a beautiful ball. What more could a person ask for? Mikayla's heart was filled with gratitude."What's up? Are you ready," Anna asked from behind her, coming to stand with her.Mikayla looked at her friend in the mirror. "Yes, I'm ready. You look incredible." Anna wore a long velvet dress with dramatically big sleeves. "Thank you! You look wonderful too," she answered.Mikayla nodded, turning back and forth as she looked at herself in the mirror. "Yes, I do," she said."Oh," Anna's eyes widened. "That is the first time I've ever heard you acknowledge that
"Hello?" Mikayla said tiredly into the phone. "What's up?" "Hi, love," Cael's voice said over the speaker."Oh, hi, Cael! Sorry, I didn't look at the screen when I picked the call!" She was barely keeping her eyes open so she'd simply swiped without looking.Cael chuckled. "That tired, Hun? Well, you're about to come wide awake. I have good news."Mikayla perked up immediately. "Really?" She said, sitting up. "What is it?""Remember that call I got at your house?" He asked."Yes," Mikayla answered. How could she forget? She'd found herself thinking about it from time to time. He'd managed to distract her that night but she'd been wondering about it since then. Especially because Cael seemed to be in a perpetual good mood since the call. He walked around the house whistling. She'd even caught him smiling to himself a few times. The horror!"Well, you remember that meeting we had withr Marcus a while back about expanding the hospital?""How could I forget?" she said."Well, I got
Mikayla stood in front of the door to her beloved home. It'd been two weeks since she last stepped here. During those two weeks, she was staying with Cael at his mansion. She'd finally summoned the courage to come back and pack up Abe's stuff. She took a deep breath and turned the key. Suddenly there was a revving sound behind her. Mikayla turned around to see Cael's cars pulling into her driveway. "What are you doing here?" She asked in surprise."I couldn't let you face this alone. I'm here to help," he answered, walking up to her.She smiled. "But you didn't tell me you were coming! We spoke about me coming here this morning."He smiled back. "I wanted to surprise you," he said. "Are you ready to go in?"Mikayla nodded. "I was just psyching myself up to go in when I heard your car pull in. I guess I just have to rip the band-aid off and get it over with."He nodded. "I'll help you." He opened the door and entered first. Mikayla followed behind him.She looked around her house.
"Good morning, boss," Nurse Rachel called cheerfully to Mikayla as she came into work that morning."Morning," Mikayla answered quietly and headed into her office.Rachel caught Kim's eyes and raised a brow in a silent question. "What now?"Nurse Kim shook her head and nodded towards the office. "Go do your job," she said.Rachel sighed and went after Mikayla. She met her putting on her coat. "Dr Wall, is everything okay?"Mikayla gave her a tight smile. "Everything is fine, thank you."Rachel raised a brow. Obliviously everything was not fine. But she didn't press the issue. She decided to ask a different question."And how is Abe doing this morning? We've missed him a lot! The night shift nurses were shocked to hear that he'd been discharged. They made me swear to ask you to bring him in one of these days do they can say hello."A lump developed in Mikayla's throat. She swallowed thickly. Her eyes watered. She turned away from Rachel so she wouldn't see. "Abe is no longer with me
After Cael handed Abe over to Michelle, Mikayla fell into a pool of grief. She sat listlessly on the floor for what could have been minutes, hours or seconds. She was completely unaware of Armani's gentle presence, rocking her gently. At some point, Armani left to go home and still she didn't notice. When Cael decided that she'd been on the floor long enough, he picked her up to take her to the bedroom. At that moment, something inside of her snapped. With a snarl, Mikayla launched herself at Cael and began pounding at him.He fell on his butt in surprise. She pounded him with every ounce of strength in her body. She hit every inch of skin she could reach, growling like a wounded animal with each punch. There was so much pent up fury in her head with no exit route. So she pounded it out.Cael took the beating like a champ. He sat rock still and waited for her to finish, pinning her with those black, glittering hawk-like eyes. "How could you! How could you!" Mikayla snarled in
Michelle stood in Cael's doorway, clad in an expensive designer coat that barely reached halfway to her thighs. She also spotted glittering silver shoes that probably cost more than Mikayla's phone!"What the hell are you doing here?" Mikayla exclaimed.Cael heard the sound of her voice and came running to the door, Abe in his arms. "Mum!" Abe squealed as soon as he saw her and reached for her."My sweet boy!" She cooed, taking him from Cael. "Did you miss me? I missed you a lot.""I asked you a question," Mikayla repeated through clenched teeth. "What the hell are you doing here?""Is that any way to talk to your mother?" Michelle chastened and walked into the house, almost shouldering past them. She headed straight to the living room as if the place belonged to her."Do you know how difficult it was to find you?" She demanded, oblivious to the shock and discomfort of the rest of them. She sat comfortably. "I went by your house and there was no one there. It didn't seem like anyo
Armani pressed the doorbell again. The sound caused Mikayla to jump. She self-consciously ran her hand over her hair and body, making sure everything was in place. Armani often had that effect on her. She was always so beautiful, well put together and chic. She made Mikayla feel like a slob. She opened the door and smiled nervously at Armani. "Hi.""Hello," Armani said. "Can I come in?"It strick Mikayla as odd that she was asking her if she could come in. From what she knew, Armnai frequented Cael's house as often as she wanted. They were that close. So why did she feel the need to ask her?"Yes, of course," she answered and stepped back for her.Armani walked in and stood waiting. Mikayla blinked. "Erm...this way." She shut the door and led Armani to the living room. "Cael is asleep right now but I can wake him up if you want..." Armani smiled and shook her head. She sat down. "Don't bother. I didn't come to see him anyway. I came to see you."Mikayla sat down slowly. "To see
Mikayla was embarrassed! She was in the middle of a small crowd that had gathered in front of the hospital to see Abe off. In three days, he'd managed to become the hospital sweetheart. Every time she went to see him in his room, she met at least three hospital staff at a time fawning over him.Meanwhile, Abe basked in the attention he was getting in the hospital. The little celebrity had been showered with so many gifts that there was hardly space left in his room. So much so that he kicked off a fuss when she told him he would be going home today. At least his new friends had come out to bid him goodbye!Right now, he was in the arms of one of the nurses while the other crowded around him. They were waiting for Cael to pull the car around. Sweet Cael! He's been on ground these past three days, taking care of Mikayla and Abe simultaneously. It was Cael who'd brought her change of clothes each day. It was Cael who'd ordered food for her and made sure everything was fine while
