Many of the merlings, caught up in the excitement, follow the procession out of the city, waving until the group is out of sight. However, just before they are completely engulfed by the darkness of the abysmal plain, Tritan raises his hand, signaling for a halt. The party comes to a stop, the hippocampi reined in by Markous.

Nerissa and Madissa, curious about the sudden pause, climb out of the carriage and sign their question, "What's wrong?" Tritan, using sign language, communicates with the group.
