"You can never trust these women." He took a breath intake, looking for the strength to tell his story. "She was pregnant with that white devil's child all along. She agreed to marry me still... wanting to pin their mistake onto me."

"Uncle Eli, I'm sorry you had to go through that." Thomas said listening attentively. He had been surprised when Elliot had asked to have a word with him. They were not close, they were not friends neither family but they resided together at commune. Thomas wondered what was his reason for abruptly coming forward to tell him his story personally. There had always been rumors of him being played for an imbecile, rumors of his supposed wife giving birth to a mulatto. Elliot has always been a quiet lad, Thomas was shocked at his visit.

"The child is supposedly six years old now. She is still with him..."

"How awful."

"I thought I ought to come give you advise after hearing the other men laugh at the news of Merrigold being impregnated by Master Austin."

Sitting on the side of the bed facing the balcony doors. Merrigold sighed, feeling hopeless, helpless. She had done absolutely nothing but felt exhausted. Tired of staring at the same walls. Her bare feet swollen when the only steps she had taken were to relieve herself. She felt like a prisoner. The old clock in one side of the room, made her head rotate. It's ticking reminded her that even though she refused to move, even though she refused to do anything... time was still moving and whether she was pleased with it or not, her belly was ever growing. Sleep had proved to be a struggle, not knowing which side was much better. None of them were any better. Perhaps facing the ceiling and watching the golden chandelier with caliginous lamps. Her thoughts were interrupted by one of the younger girls that worked in the kitchen. Then another one came in, holding belongings, bringing them in and laying the flat on the mahogany chest of drawer.Confused, Merrigold asked. "What is going on?""

Walter Cunningham adored his wife so much so, that if she made any demands, he met them. He was always one to please her, never questioning her authority as the mother of the house. He respected her decisions and went along with most of her very very kind decision making. He had fallen inlove with who she was as a person, not her beauty that all happened to be a bonus. He had fallen for her want to change the world even if it was just little changes. Her love for people, all people. She had always been enthusiastic about being different. Her German background did not hinder his want to be with her. He still pursued her even at the time, with her very low English vocabulary. Smitten, he had learnt a bit of German to converse with her even when there was no longer a need. Austin's father was raised in a catholic household. He assumed he had done the same with his own family but it did not seem that way judging by his son's idiosyncrasies that portrayed devilish mannerisms. His belief in

It was day three of residing with her brother in their small room. Merrigold did not want to reside with strangers at the women's burdened commune. They all seemingly had a little anger and envy for her. If Thomas had said Princess Merri getting flung out of the palace in the midst of the night had not made him a tiny tad bit happy then he would be untruthful. News went through the commune quickly too quickly. Master Cunningham senior was back and all the foolery that had been happening in his household were put to an end. Thomas could not have been any happier. Knowing this was not Merrigold's first time being thrown out he hoped this time it was permanent. Pretending to be her friend and having her best interests at heart, Thomas asked Merri as they sat watching the sunrise in the early morning. "He left and never returned huh? He must not care about you...""He said he will be back." Merri told Thomas who chuckled."I'm very doubtful Merrigold by the looks of things. You're on your

"I've made my decision."Mrs. Cunningham remained quiet, turning to her side of the bed. It was in the early hours of the morning. She was bereaved off any happiness. Having not seen or heard from her son in three days and Merri being asked to leave the main house. There was absolutely nothing to be ecstatic about."Well ignore me all you want but all I wanted you to know was, I spoke to a friend in London." Pausing he continued. "There's a family happy to welcome the child there. Hopefully it is a girl so she can work in the house when fully nurtured and grown."In dismay his wife replied harshly. "That is not your decision to make. It's not even your child Walter..!""Austin and that your Merrigold are incapable of raising a child especially that kind of a child. Do you realize what they have done? Do you know understand the severity of their actions...? That child will come out looking like... something we have never seen before. It will be hard to hide, everyone will know. The sha

Pangs of conscience.Guilt ridden, Merrigold woke up with a change of heart. Just as she was about to give in, desperate for love, desperate for someone's protection, desperate for someone to constantly remind her that she was not alone in this pregnancy. In Austin's bare arms that night her in her dreams she relived his horridness. Her nightmare reminded her that she had become comfortable in the lions den. The feelings she had when she had tried unyieldingly tried to take her own life were back. Questions swam in her thoughts, just how long would this last before Austin kicked her to the curb? She could not depend on him. Even if he wanted this child, how long would that last... as soon as it became hard he would throw in the towel. Nothing was going in her favor, she had lost Mr Cunningham's respect. She was staying on his property, to live a rather peaceful life... she had to be on good terms with the man. Fear ran through her body when she remembered, she was in an unknown lodge

When Austin and William left the room for some seconds, they knew what they were doing. It was a plan set out from the beginning. Merri and Panashe felt awkward, noticing the forced relation. Granted it was as if they were both expected to understand each other. After what William had told Panashe, she did not know how she could ever console the girl. Being older than Merri and more experienced... perhaps there was a thing or two that she could teach Merrigold. Panashe had it bad with William but never as torturous as William had described what Austin put Merrigold through. Merri looked around, more afraid and anxious for what was waiting for her at home, her home, the Cunningham plantation. Her anxiety wanted her to leave immediately. When Austin said it would only be a little while, she never assumed this long. Mr Cunningham senior would be waiting for her with a Bible and whip in one hand presumably. Merrigold looked down at the biscuits and tea on the table. She could not fathom t

"Master, have you seen Merri?"The old man cringed with resentment at the name as he helped Thomas carry the hay into the barn with the other men who were working tirelessly and enthusiastically to impress Mr. Cunningham. He insisted, he loved working as well. Not only watching people work. Removing his straw hat, he rubbed his bald head feeling how sweaty he was."Not since the day they announced their foolery and disrespected me in my own home." He responded walking away but Thomas followed. Removing his hat as a manner of showing respect, he lowered his head as he spoke to Mr. Cunningham."I'm concerned Master. She hasn't been at the commune for nearly two days, I assumed she was back in the house."The old man stopped in his tracks putting his hands on his waist. He looked around callously not being able to hide how upset he was. "Austin..." he muttered after a while, under his breath. An unexpected visitor.Henry dropped his suitcase on the first two steps of his parents veranda. Exhausted from the long walk he had taken, dusty and bedraggled. He looked as if he had given up on life as it is. A solemn look of defeat on his face. Mr and Mrs Cunningham had been drinking tea, that early morning."Mother..." Henry breathed out, voice creaking with unsaid emotion. He looked so vulnerable as his mother came to his aid. Walter kept sitting, he continued to read his paper. He was already annoyed with Austin, now Henry... this had to be good. He would not disturb his morning bible study for a grown man. A thought crossed his mind, where had he gone wrong with his boys? It was upsetting. Nonetheless he lowered his paper to watch his wife help Henry with his satchel and suitcase. Offering him water, he drank with gusto, so thirstily it dripped on the side of his lips. His hands shook from how anxious he felt, Henry took a seat on the woven porch cushions. His anger was once rooted on Merri, why had she left? This was all her fault. She had led him into falling victim of this horrid unjust demonic behavior. He did not know whom he was anymore. Merrigold had been the only person in his whole entire life who shielded him from judgement. No one would ever think differently of him with Merrigold by his side as his lover. No one would ever assume he took a liking to other men. It was an unpleasant feeling that he was thoroughly ashamed of. Thomas noted, he had not always felt this way; he had not always been this way. He had never been one to look at another man twice. Never! It made him wonder were his feelings for Merrigold ever real? They were, he thought. He loved Merri not as a friend or a sister but as a lover. He enjoyed all their intimates moments tog

"Mrs Brown?" Austin called her. She was quick to squeeze his cheeks and give him kisses on both cheeks. She'd always see him as a child even though he now towered over her."I've been meaning to have a word with you.""Out with it then?" She continued to wipe the kitchen countertops."I'm sorry you had to constantly deal with me. I've come to realize, I was such a huge burden on you and my parents. It's never easy setting upright a rebellious child." Austin muttered ashamed. He could not count the many times, his parents were not aware of his location. For months or even years at a time. The trail of debts he sent their way. Austin loved the west. He loved the ignorance within America. The transatlantic slave trade was abolished first with an act of Congress on March 2, 1807, followed with a British act of Parliament on March 25. This abolishment outlawed the international slave trade, but not slavery itself. In England, the abolishment of the transatlantic slave trade only pushed for

Bad conscience over responsibility.Regardless of who was right or wrong, she felt shameful for her actions. Black people were already named barbaric uncultured swines. Her anger had pushed forth a uncaring attitude for consequences or self dignity. For someone who knew how to always hold it in when being insulted and abashed; she had clearly derailed off the road. Her whole life Merri had been called names, made to feel inferior, lesser than anything and anyone else. She was well aware, having mastered the art of ignorance to the hurtful slurs. Ignorance to the hypocritical attitudes of those who claimed to be above her. This was not new to her, it honestly wasn't but when Stella did—Merri could not hold herself. She was angry. This was the woman who had caused so much harm and refused to acknowledge any of her devious actions. This was the woman who had turnt Austin into a horrid cynical unlikable bastard. Hasani added still a little flummoxed by Thomas's cold shoulder."If you're not here to work away from me, you're literally the most disgusting person I've ever came across in my whole entire life. Merri was disgusting for being with the white man but you definitely took the trophy away from her." Thomas was quick to click his tongue and he sorted the hay.Hasani felt embarrassed but nonetheless shrugged his shoulders. "Your insults do not phase me.""Will a beating do the trick?""Why are you so violent and bitter?" Hasani questioned, a little addled by the situation.Thomas rolled his eyes at him. "Out of my sight. Whenever everything was going well there always had to be a dilemma waiting. Austin and Merri had so much trials and tribulations in the time they had shared and known each other. For many reasons just when it felt as though everything was going their way, something had to occur and dismiss their union.Merri slept early that night. Not really asleep but staring at her side of the lamp. She hugged herself trying to keep warm. An awful feeling of betrayal and treachery inhibited within her chest. She blinked a couple of times, standing up to check on her kids. They were sound asleep. It must have been because they had not sleep in the afternoon. Merrigold adored looking at them, they were so precious. She had no idea she would be able to love any other person on this earth and forsaken world the way she did her kids. Sometimes she had to snap herself to reality. 'I'm a mother, I'm a wife? I'm a mother? I'm really a mother?' Her life has changed so drastically. Her babies were every rea

"Oh goodness..!" He teared up. "How do I hold them? They're so delicate, small, tiny and adorable... wow Merri, they're going to grow to be such handsome lads."Blushing Merri, gave Thomas a subtle smile. "The white wool is Lennox and the blue wool is Lionel. Lennox has a birthmark on his neck, it's really helpful with telling them apart."In awe, Thomas decided against holding them. Afraid they'd fall or something. Afraid Austin and Walter would be out to get his head. He did not want any problems for himself. Instead, he stood a bit far and only bent down their cradle to play with their small fingers."How's motherhood treating you?" He questioned turning back to look at her. She looked exhausted, nonetheless happy. The smile on her face overshadowed the bags under her eyes. She had certainly put on a bit of weight. Her breasts much fuller with milk patches seeping through her clothing. Her stomach, would take a while to return to being as flat as it used to be before Austin had mad

"Grandpa was very very upset, folks always try to put me in a bitter mood but I feel so much better with you little buggers." Walter said playing with their little fingers. "Isn't it?" He tickled their little bellies. "Isn't it?" His voice became restrained and small. They seemed so attentive and both quiet in their cradle. Clearly occupied, if he got any closer they would be quick to pull his nose, they loved that. Walter sat back on his wooden cushioned chair, facing the balcony enjoying a drink, he had always been one to hide his alcohol but at this moment he did not care if anyone saw him drinking. He wasn't perfect, clearly he was sick of acting as if he was."I have every reason to be upset with that daft uncle of yours." He added taking another swig. Adjusting his stroll-hat, the little ones buoyantly wiggled their arms and feet at each other. Lionel then hit Lennox while doing so, even then the little boy didn't cry. He only wiggled harder as if to return the hit. Walter laugh

Austin was willing but Henry was not having it. A sense of bitterness sat right on the top of his chest. He would never be able to get over any of this mediocrity. He thought, he could but he was failing dismally. He had not slept that night, blankly staring at the ceiling. As if punishment, he could hear Merri and Austin giggling... God, knows what they were doing. They acted like hormonal teenagers who finally got to be with the one they had been courting for the longest time. It annoyed him to no end, did the walls have to be any thinner? Did the echoes have to be any louder? Did Austin's room have to be right next to his? Why was it so difficult to see Austin happy... his own brother. It bothered him. Perhaps because for the longest of time, he had believed wit
