--Maryam's POV--
Bright lights blinded me, making me furrow my eyebrows. The freshly-cut wet grass tickled my feet through the long pencil heels I was wearing. I stopped walking causing Abdullah to look at me.
"Why did you stop?" he asked. I adjusted my sparkling headscarf and long dress before looking up at him. "These heels are killing me," I admitted. Abdullah nodded knowingly, stepping closer to me and holding out his arm. "You can lean on me if that helps." He offered.
I quickly shook my head, imagining the awkwardness if I accepted his offer. "I'll manage. Thanks." I started to drag my feet again, ignoring the pain. Abdullah continued walking as well. He was ahead of me by a few meters and it was better that way.
I looked up at the grand palace in front of me getting blinding by the lights for a second before my eyes adjusted to them. The beautiful and fancy balconies and especially the big gro
--Maryam's POV --For sure, the world had stopped. In a matter of nanoseconds, Zain had disappeared into the background and my eyes could only find Abdullah. My heart was beating nonstop and my face had turned beetroot red. More so because Abdullah stood in a similar situation. His dark green eyes had softened, his hair glistening and his lips curled into what seemed to be a mixture of a nervous and flustered smile. At the back of my mind, I could feel Zain smirking as he watched us with amusement but hell if I cared."We should return to the ballroom." It was Abdullah who broke our intense moment, making me blink. Somewhere in my heart, I felt very disappointed that the moment was over and I had to face reality again. The bitter truth that there was a stubborn snob named Noor separating the both of us."Yes, we should." I bobbed my head in agreement, not daring to let the disapp
——Maryam's POV——For a second, it felt like it was just my imagination but when Abdullah held out his hand with a small smile on his face, I couldn't help but confirm it. "You mean...you and I... Dancing together?" I raised an eyebrow at him as I asked him that, half expecting him to back out of it.Instead, he nodded. "Is that so hard to believe?" his tone was light. I stared at his hand weirdly, nodding slowly. "Umm...yeah." I said in a 'duh' tone but he looked like he had already predicted it.His hand scooped down and took mine, the feeling of his rough skin against my soft one returning. He started walking and I followed him, thinking about what had gotten into him. Not a few minutes ago, he
——Third Person's POV ——That night, it had been awkward for both of them. The wife, went straight to her room, taking off her itchy yet glamorous gown and changing into a pair of comfy pajamas and the husband stayed outside in the living room, busy on his phone. The night was still young as it was only ten o clock. They had left the party in a hurry before it ended. Abdullah sighed another time as his phone blew up again, the ring tone getting annoying by the second. He almost glared at the caller ID but picked it up nonetheless."Yes, Mr. Jones?" his tone had switched, becoming professional but polite. "Oh, I left the party due to an emergency." he stopped to let the man speak and started speaking again when he was done. "My wife, she wasn't feeling well.""You'll be coming to the meeting, right? We'll discuss this there, for sure. I'll be expecting you." He quickly cut the c
——Third Person's POV——Maryam ran a look around the shop. Seeing all the grand designs and clothes made her want to squeal but she controlled herself. "Are you sure you want to go home?" Damian asked her for confirmation which made her gaze shift to him from the surroundings."Yes, I'm sure. Thank you for this, though." she smiled formally, trying to keep her distance, especially since Cornelia had run off to the restroom. Despite Maryam insisting to go with her, she refused and left her with her chatty brother."But we've hardly been to two shops. If you're holding back because I'm a stranger, then please don't. You may not remember but we've met before." he said it so casually that she didn't notice what
——Third Person's POV——It was silent as both of them entered the house, Maryam being the first to step in. She was expecting another argument session but to her surprise, Abdullah didn't even look at her the whole ride. Instead, she kept on peeking at him and tried to find any difference in his expression but to no avail. She had a bad feeling that it was the calm before the storm. What did she do wrong anyway? She just happened to meet her former senior and it was all unintentional. She didn't need to worry. After all, Abdullah cared only for Noor."Maryam." she was snapped back to reality by the order. She looked around just to find that
——Third Person's POV——The legs of the chair made a noise as a maid dragged it out for Abdullah. The breakfast table was laden with delicious food, enough to make anyone's mouth water. Maryam peeked a glance at him, putting a morsel in her mouth."Good morning, Maryam." Abdullah was the one to greet first. Maryam slightly smiled and nodded. "Good morning." He sat down on his seat as the maid put a plate in front of him. "Are you going somewhere?" he asked her, frowning at her perfectly pinned-up hijab and formal clothes. She nodded again, trying her very best not to act awkward after what had happened the previous day. "I'm going to school. I've already taken a lot of days off."Abdullah started eating but his eyes were fixated on his wife. She tried to look elsewhere to escape any questioning regarding their intimate moment. Abdullah still hadn't officially admitted his
——Third Person's POV——The shivers that rushed through Maryam's body increased as she slowly stepped out of the building, Cornelia about a few feet away from her. The noon sun blinded her for a second but she quickly averted her gaze to the front where a big crowd of students was gathered. She didn't bother calling out to Cornelia and Cornelia didn't mind since she was already moving ahead, pushing through students to see what the fuss was all about.Maryam gulped and ran a long look around her as the others left her behind and she was standing there alone at the entrance of the building. Her eyes caught red and blue lights blinking on the top of a black police car standing right outside the bar gate."The police?!" she gasped and rushed towards the crowd. So many blondes, black and brown head students blocked her but she forced her way in, earning herself ma
——Third Person's POV—-The door was closed behind Maryam by Mr. Fred, the janitor. Abdullah sat down on the fancy sofa placed in the middle of the room, across the glass table. A few refreshments lay there untouched as if they were waiting for just him.Maryam looked around in confusion and surprise. The exquisite furniture and fancy look of the room smelled expensive from far away. "I never knew we had a room like this in the school," she said, still admiring the brown and red-themed room.Abdullah picked up a cup of tea, showing that he was used to all that, and took a small sip. "It's for special guests. The education ministers, donation-related people, and others. Don't think about it too much." He said, putting his cup down on the glass table. He looked at Maryam and smiled a little. Noticing that, she unconsciously adjusted her loose black shirt and grey plazo. There was a short silence when Abdullah cleared his throat."Aren't you
——Third Person's POV——The allegations against Abdullah had been proven in court. Noor, who was as pale as a flower in winter at the news, did not expect her recording to be played in front of all the people there. She was even more horrified when the judge announced her a fine of 500 dollars and two months in jail with hard labor as punishment for drugging someone without consent and lying in court, along with causing problems in other people's personal lives. She had cursed at Maryam aloud in the court but got quiet when the judge warned her about increasing the penalty. To say that Maryam was happy would be a lie because, in the end, she didn't get anyone. Not Abdullah, not Damian, and not a precious best friend while Maryam got everything by the grace of Allah.Abdullah and Maryam walked out of the court with bright faces and hands entwined. Abdullah, with his hair, pulled back and the blue tux looked more handsome without the firm and cold shine in his eyes. He
——Third Person's POV——The air between Maryam and Abdullah was much lighter after the call was cut. However, Maryam was dumbstruck in her place but more relieved. It felt as if her tightened muscles had relaxed and the mounting headache had just been cured. She trailed her eyes from the phone to Abdullah."I... Don't believe it." she croaked. But, Abdullah shook his head and replied, "I do.""Who knew she would go this far just to get back at me? It's scary." there was silence for a while when Abdullah spoke up, putting his hand over hers again. "Does that mean you're convinced? That you'll come back to me?" his voice sounded desperate which pierced Maryam's heart with guilt. She was starting to feel regret. Even though he wasn't very trustworthy, she didn't let him say a word in his defense. Then, what was the difference between what he did to her and her actions? She slowly looked up. "I...Abdullah... I don't know what to say. I feel ashamed." she put her
——Maryam's POV——One day was left until the final decision of the court. I was having breakfast when the thought occurred to me and suddenly started to feel anxious. My pace slowed down and a million thoughts were rushing through my head. Not to mention Abdullah's handsome face popping up again and again. I remembered his last words clearly like crystal and couldn't shake them off. He had looked so sincere and honest. Maybe even more than the time he asked me to start over and it was the main reason I was starting to waver. "Why aren't you eating, Maryam dear?" Mrs. Wilson asked, nearly making me jump. My head snapped towards her and I quickly replied, "Oh! Nothing. I was just thinking about something." David Wilson was right in front of me, on his high and mighty chair. I felt him looking at me seriously as he pushed another morsel into his mouth. I couldn't ignore his dark eyes and finally glanced at him once. As soon as I did that, he smiled and switc
——Maryam's POV——It felt almost forever since I had last breathed a sigh of relief. The constant pressure of being in someone else's house and being a burden on them was massive and it didn't help when you had your own problems to deal with. Cornelia had always assured me that I wasn't a burden but I wasn't dumb not to read expressions. The next court hearing was only two days away and I was feeling the nervousness already. My lawyer had contacted me with all the necessary files regarding the assets and things seemed to be well in place. I was as good as divorced and it was NOT a good feeling."Come on! I'm starving!" Cornelia exclaimed, shaking me out of my thoughts. I was brought back to reality when my eyes fell on the empty plate in front of me. My eyes then traveled to Cornelia and then to Damian who was busy with his phone, sitting right next to his sister."Why won't our order come?" Cornelia groaned again for the hundredth time, with her hand under her c
——Third Person's POV——The silence in the courtroom was heavy, almost as if a murder had taken place. The few number of people sitting in the background looked at each other with confused and curious expressions. The big stage set up for the family court judge was standing in all its glory and fame. A small desk was placed right beside it for the assistant.A small bench stood in front of the stage with its back facing the crowd where Maryam's lawyer, Mr. Javed sat in his traditional black and white tux under a black cloak. When Abdullah entered the courtroom, people started whispering and hissing amongst each other except Maryam. She stared intensely at him, almost giving him a death threat. She fully thought of him as her criminal. As her oppressor and no power besides the power of Allah could make her rethink her decision. Her brown eyes traveled to the people in the back and she spotted Cornelia and Damian.Cornelia's assuring smile made her gain confidence
——Maryam's POV——That was it. It was the last Fibre of patience I had left in me. I couldn't let him stomp over me anymore. I couldn't let him throw haze into my eyes and get away with it. I wasn't that weak. I stormed out, but my footsteps were light and I wasn't as furious as I had been while entering. The man at the reception stood up to greet me again, Rashid still standing beside the desk. He came into motion when I passed but with just a wave of my hand, Rashid stopped and understood that I was good on my own. My eyes were blurry and I had a throbbing headache that made my body tremble. But, I ignored it. The rush of adrenaline made my veins pop out but I kept on going. I knew I couldn't return to Saleh manor and step right into Abdullah's territory. He could easily indulge me in his sorry pleas and excuses and once again, I'd give myself to him.I texted Cornelia, telling her to meet me at a coffee shop and that it was an emergency. I knew she woul
--Maryam's POV--The next few days were peaceful. I forgot about my parents ever coming in the first place and I had to admit, it was only because Abdullah made everything seem so normal that I couldn't make it a big deal even if I tried to.It turned out I was right. Of course, mother and father only came to visit me to exploit Abdullah's power and wealth for their own benefit. They had been evicted from their house and property because some social workers found out they were trying to adopt another kidnapped child from human traffickers to get paid by the government. The news made my body shiver.Abdullah told Rashid to crack the egg when father pleaded for him to help them financially. It was one shell of a scene but I was in my room, snoring my dreams away by the grace of Allah. It made me think; if it weren't for my foster family's wrong ways, I would've never been adopted by them from those kidnappers. And if that never happened, Al
——Third Person's POV——"Okay, I'll wait for you," Maryam said into the phone, checking out her fingernails, with a poker face. She spoke like it was the most boring thing to do. "Do bring Husna along. She'd like it." she continued, as Abdullah looked at her.He had settled on the bed after taking a shower and was getting dressed for work, all the while observing his wife as she talked to her mother and invited her to their house. He pulled on his sock when Maryam ended the call with a quick "Allah Hafiz" and put the mobile phone on the dressing table. She let out a long sigh and leaned on the dressing table for support, putting her hand on her head to show her mental frustration. Slipping on his shoes, Abdullah decided to ask Maryam what happened. "So, when are they coming?" he questioned. She adjusted her posture and brought life to her tone. "This evening. 5 o'clock. She was saying they would pray Maghrib here." she told him. Abdullah walked o
—Third Person's POV—The heavy main door of the Saleh manor opened with a thud and in entered Maryam with a bright smile on her face. Her light footsteps were hardly audible on the entrance carpet and she held the strap of her purple backpack placed over her shoulder. She didn't realize that her smile was still plastered on her face as she walked towards her room. Revising the events that occurred at school that day, she couldn't help but talk to herself and keep on grinning. "Ma'am!" A small voice interrupted her thoughts and she whirled her head around to see Mila looking at her with wide eyes. "I'm so sorry! I didn't hear you come in or else I would have rushed to welcome you myself!" she looked worried as if she had made a big mistake. "Don't worry about it, Mila. You know I don't know how to act like a proper, rich mistress. I'm fine even if you don't treat me like this." she assured her through her smile. Mila lowered her gaze and nodded. "But, I can't
