‘Why do I feel like it’s my first date?’ Max felt so nervous he was sweating. This was not a feeling he was familiar with. He always had the confidence to face any task or person, but there was something about Celine that threw him off his game. It felt like this was one date he could not mess up because his life depended on it.
‘So how is your sister? Is she feeling any better?’ She asked when someone tapped her shoulder.
‘Celine, I saw you from the street. Why are you having lunch here? Does your lunch date know who you are? That you don’t eat at places like these?’
‘At least if I was your lunch date, I would never have brought you here. It’s so dingy, and things look cheap.’ He swipes his finger on the table, coming up with nothing, but pretending there was dust on it, to show his disgust.
Celine rolls her eyes. ‘Dante, nobody asked for your opinion. And this is my lunch date, not yours. You can leave.’
Dante is the son of one of the prominent families in San Diego. Plastered on all the billboards around the city was his mom’s face. She was selling prime real estate while his dad did construction, building the mega subdivisions. Gated communities with mansions built on hillsides and prime pieces of land. And even though it was his parents’ hard work that brought them riches and fame, he never failed to ride on their coattails. Brandishing his wealth whenever he can. He has yet to finish his schooling, but he always acts as if he is above everyone else.
Max chose the restaurant for the food, not because he thought it was expensive or because he wanted to impress Celine. It was an impromptu lunch date, and he just chose whatever was nearest, so they could go out and get to know each other, away from his siblings. Impressing her would come later. This is just the initial date to make Celine want to see him more. His plan was to charm her and make her laugh, but everything seemed to blow up in his face. He did not expect someone else to interrupt them today. But he should have taken heed of that ominous feeling he had earlier.
‘You are interrupting our time together. I suggest you leave,’ Max threatened in a clipped, curt manner. He stood up to show Dante that he could take him out, but he had to appear peaceful. He was trying to be blunt without being overly offensive.
Dante tried not to act too surprised when he saw how tall Celine’s lunch date was. He towered a full foot above him. He needed to look up. When he looked down at his full length, Dante noticed he was wearing the latest Armani suit, and envy bloomed in his chest. It was the same exact suit he wanted for himself but had to wait for because the shop had to alter it. Taking in some length and letting out a few areas. He was pudgy and had been trying to lose weight around his middle, but it seemed that the nightly carousing and binge drinking did not help. He noted that on this man. The suit looked very well-tailored. It made him wonder if they’d be competing against each other for Celine’s affections.
‘Who are you? And why do you think you can speak to me that way? Tell your friend who I am, Celine, before I get mad.’ Dante slowly raised his voice.
‘Dante, you’re interrupting my lunch break. Can we talk some other time?’
‘You’re really asking me to leave?’ He was flabbergasted. Nobody has asked him to leave before. Women fawned at him and threw themselves at his feet. And yet this infuriating woman is asking him to leave. If he didn’t want Celine so much, he won’t do what she says.
‘Yes, thank you!’ It left a sour taste in her mouth to encounter Dante while she was out with Max. Just when she thought she had other prospects, he comes and ruins it for her. Just because they met first, he thought he had ownership of her.
It was one reason she was excited to meet someone new, someone, who would not judge her for who people knew her to be. Instead, for who she really was and not just because of her family name, Jacobs. But as Celine.
‘You are impossible. If I didn’t like you so much, I wouldn’t be here.’
‘But I didn’t ask you to be here, did I? I need to get back to work soon, so can you leave so I can continue with my lunch?’
‘What is your name? You’ll regret coming across my path.’
‘I’m Max Johnson, and you’ll regret saying that. Maybe it’s high time you honored the lady’s request and scheduled an appointment with her for later. We are having lunch right now, and we don’t want to get indigestion.’ And just in time, the food they ordered had arrived, which prompted Dante to move out of the way.
Max and Celine both ignored Dante like he did not exist, and it angered him.
‘So how does your chicken taste?’ Max asks as he pretends to take a tasty bite of the steak sandwich he ordered. Right now, it tasted like cardboard.
‘It tastes very good. The pesto sauce they added to this chicken is the best I’ve ever had. You should try it.’ She reaches over to invite him to take a bite of her sandwich.
Dante was seething as he watched the couple eat their lunch. ‘This is not the end of this,’ he murmured as he huffed and walked out of the cafe, embarrassed.
‘I’m really sorry about that,’ Celine apologizes the minute Dante was out of earshot. ‘He thinks I should be his girlfriend just because he talked to me when I first moved back to the city.’
‘Did he say he wants you to be his girlfriend?’ Max asks.
‘He has expressed it in so many ways. Even going to the lengths of talking to my parents about it. But I don’t want him.’
‘Did you tell him?’
‘Yes, I do, all the time. Sometimes to the point of being rude.’
‘You know what, I think we should schedule another lunch when both of us really want to eat. He ruined my appetite, and I’m sorry if he ruined yours as well.’ She signaled the server to bring her a box.
Lunch was a disaster, and he didn’t even need to do anything to ruin it. And for once in Max’s life, he wanted to know more about Celine, which meant he wanted to see her again and go on another date. And this will definitely mean he has to break his cardinal rule of never dating a woman more than once if he wanted to bed her on the second date.
Max Clara has been quiet on the plane ride home, stewing in her thoughts. She has a lot of things to process about her identity, her parents, and her sister. 'I would probably feet the same way if I ever find out about my past.' 'Is she really Carmen Jacobs? What does that mean for Jeremy and me when she finally reunites with her family? Will they be welcoming to us? Will they ask her to move in with them?' Now he started to get nervous. 'I would like to think she would not abandon us for her actual family. After all, she spent most of her life with us already, we have become her family. I just hope we continue to be together. I can't bear to lose Clara. There I said it.'
‘Hey, kids!’ Mr. Powell says from the open door. After a round of hugs, he told them that records from the kids in the orphanage before they assumed management was missing.‘I asked them about all those records when we arrived, and they told us about a break-in years earlier. Those idiots trashed the whole place. Do you know what the biggest surprise was? The only thing the looters absconded with were records of all the kids living here. Since most of you guys have grown up and moved on, they never bothered to restore the missing data,’ he said. ‘I think the old caretakers should have fixed the records because there is always a chance that someone might return.‘Pa, were there any other pictures you could show us from before?’ Max asked hopefully.‘Nah, but
Jeremy texts Max that Sebastian is in the building. ‘Give me 15 minutes before you come to my office. And don’t forget to pay up.’ Sebastian Colfer is in their office, and Max knows he came to see Clara and nothing else. The brothers had been betting on the two CEOs ever since the Installation three weeks ago. Max guessed he would be there after the one-month mark. Believing Sebastian would hold out and pretend he was not that interested in his sister. Jeremy said it would be less, claiming the CEO wanted to hurry things along. His sister and Sebastian have been butting heads the whole time, but he could see that the attraction was not one-sided. Clara felt something, otherwise, she wouldn’t have risen to his bait. Typically, she would just walk out and give him the bird*, but she stayed the whole time. An
‘These bozos can help you with that. I have no time right now,’ she said dismissively as she looked at her papers.Sebastian replied, ‘Oh, I had a meeting with someone at the Embarcadero yesterday and thought I’d drop by to see you guys - say hi.’ Max caught the intense look he gave her. ‘There was is no tamping down the intensity with this guy.’‘I remembered you cycled, so I was going to invite you to show me the trail near your area. It looked very scenic. I remember Max saying it circled a lake, and your social media was full of pictures of it. So I wanted to experience it firsthand. Will you give me a tour?’ he asked confidently.Max kept on texting Jeremy regarding their bet.
-=- Clara’s secretary called her brothers to come to her office for lunch as she laid the food on the table, but there was nobody in the office, and she did not know if Clara came back from her bike ride, so she left. Max and Jeremy came in laughing. They were teasing each other and betting on Clara again. They were trying to guess where they would find the two CEOs, and what they would be doing. Yeah, it was a bit mean to bet on their sister, but they had nothing else to do at the moment, and her love life was the hottest news right now. Their plan was to catch them, ‘making out,’ they both said in unison as they barged into her bedroom. When they saw Sebastian with his arms wrapped around Clara, they high-fived. But when the couple never pulled apart, it seemed lik
Every time he closes his eyes, he can see Celine’s teasing smile when they flirted that night. And then that guy Dante showed up the next day. It showed him she was no pushover. He liked that she was feisty and asked him to leave, which meant she had a fire in her, and he wanted to see it burn brighter. He wants to be the person who made her fire shine. ‘I wonder how she is in bed? I hope she’s as equally responsive.’ He was getting a hard-on just thinking about kissing her, having her in between the sheets, under hi--‘Sir, please return your seat and your tray back in its upright position. We are ready to land.’ The flight attendant interrupted Max’s sexy daydream, alerting him to how close he was to seeing the object of his fantasies. He adjusts himself before doing what the attendant instructed. He can’t scare his fellow passengers by sporting a boner.
-=-Celine was nervous. This was their first official date. After that disastrous night at the club. Then followed by the equally unpleasant lunch. Even she wouldn’t want to go out with her. It seemed like trouble followed her wherever she went. And just to prove her point, the zipper of the flowy Sunday dress she was going to wear broke apart, leaving her with no option but to ditch the dress and look through her closet for another one.She tried to pretend not to care about this date. It wasn’t a big deal, just another regular date. That’s what she said to herself, but she knew she wanted it to be special. There was something about Max that drew her to him. Actually, it was their group. The siblings looked like a very fun group to be with. With their ages being close together, she envied that they looked like they were each other's bes
Now she understood why the hostess bothered her. It was because Max was smiling at them as they walked toward him. Celine hoped his smile was only for her, and it seemed the hostess felt the same way. ‘Is she seriously competing with me?’She stared Max straight in the eye, testing to see if he was going to break contact and look at the blonde bombshell coming toward him, but he never strayed. He had passed her test. It seemed that he only had eyes for her. ‘For now.’ her evil conscience taunted her. ‘He’s only looking at you because of what you’re wearing.’She was wearing a simple dark blue A-line dress with butterfly sleeves and a deep V neckline that led down to gold buttons on the front of her dress and stopped at her knees. It would look simple if someone else wore it, but on Celine, Max thought she looked s
Peace had returned to their household, and everything felt right. Celine and Max traveled back and forth between San Diego and San Jose since Celine reconciled with her parents, and Max was getting to know his parents better. They were having fun riding Sebastian’s plane all the time. It was the perk of knowing a billionaire and being closely related to one. What they had really wasn’t a terrible deal, having 2 houses and a place to stay wherever they were. They didn’t even need to pack any outfits since there had closets full of clothes in both locations. The thing is, they couldn’t decide which place to choose, where to stay and which one to leave, and the more the couple got together, the more they wanted to settle somewhere, where it was just them, so they both agreed that Celine would join Clara’s company, SST and Max would find them a house to settle in, something they could call their own. Max was the first to separate from their group, but Celine did not want to live too far
‘I feel nervous as hell. We’ve done this a hundred times before, yet I feel like it’s our first time.’ Celine had been in the bathroom for the last half hour since the reception ended. She couldn’t enjoy the party because she kept thinking of what might happen tonight, resulting in frayed nerves and an empty stomach.Celine hesitantly left the bathroom. She knew prolonging the inevitable would only result in disaster. But the minute she walked into their honeymoon suite, the smell of fries and burgers invaded her senses.‘Hey babe, I ordered room service.’ Max greeted as he arranged the plates on the coffee table in front of the TV, as they always did when they were still dating and binge-watched one of their shows. ‘I saw you touched none of your food, so I ordered us some burger and fries. I figured
‘Do you know what really shocked me, aside from Raffy being my abductor? Is that when I woke up after he abducted me, his butler declared dad was on the phone.’‘Why was Raffy calling you dad?’‘I wanted to tell him you were in town because he kept calling the past few weeks and wanted to know when he could visit.’‘He said you approved of him as your son-in-law? How could you do that to me? You sold me to the devil, and he saw that as an excuse to do what he wanted with me.’ she looked at her father accusingly. Celine was so mad that her father had something to do with Raffy, thinking they had welcomed him into the family when Max was not.Celine and Clara’s parents, Nathan and Emelia Jacobs insisted on visiting afte
It took an hour for the couple to arrive at Sebastian’s house, and to expedite their travel, they were escorted by the motorcycle brigade to navigate and clear the traffic. Otherwise, with the congestion in the city it would have taken them a few hours to get home. By the time they got home, both sets of parents were present together with their siblings. ‘Max–’ ‘Celine–’ ‘We’re so–’ ‘You’re here!’ ‘I’m glad–’ ‘Are you–’ They all yelled excitedly, but Max ignored them and carried Celine directly to the bedroom. She tucked her head in his neck when she expressed she did not want to see anyone. And because she was more important than everybody else, he closed the door and drew her a bath. He wanted to help her relax and scrub all the terrible memories away. Get her clean so she could feel like herself again.Celine clung to him like a lost child would his mother, not wanting her husband to leave her even for one second. ‘Turn on the lights, please. They kept me in darkness most of the
Raffy laughed out loud as he watched the cops breaking into his mansion and finding nothing. ‘You idiots will never find me.’ He left his butler at the mansion to deal with the authorities as a taunt. He knew Max was more resilient than any regular husband, and could track him down faster than the police or the FBI could, so he had to take measures to cover his tracks. The house he was hiding in was purchased for the sole purpose of keeping his victims, like Celine. It wasn’t recorded in any of his financial books, or any of his aliases, and he figured it would take time before they find him, enough to carry out his plans and have sex with Celine. If she doesn’t cooperate, who knows what might happen? He might just do what he threatened her with, and tie her to the bed. He shook his head, remembering how the other women reciprocated his affection.
Celine pulled off all the pictures from the wall, every single one of them, and tore them up into little bits and pieces to satisfy her anger. The last piece that pushed her over the edge was a naked picture of her as she slept, with a hand squeezing her breast. She knows that Raffy probably had copies everywhere, but with Jeremy and Max’s help, they could erase all this embarrassing information from every computer, phone, and tablet Raffy might have them saved in.‘I’m so screwed.’ She cried while scrubbing her face with both hands. ‘Max will hate me for this. Fuck! Now I have to do what Raffy says or he’ll leak the pictures out. Oh, I don’t care. Fuck him! I won’t do anything I don’t want.’ she debated as she paced around the bedroom.‘Why do these assholes have to follow me all
‘Sebastian Colfer! Explain to me who this woman is with my sister?’ Clara barges into her husband’s office, at the same time, the security guard speaks. ‘Sir, there’s a person downstairs claiming his girlfriend never showed up to their date yesterday, and her phone shows she’s still in the building. We called her department, and they said she left early yesterday. What should I do?’‘Search the entire building and see if you can find her phone. Check the parking lot and see if her car is still downstairs. Maybe she ran away with another guy, who knows.’ Sebastian answered.‘What is it, sweetie? I did not get what you were asking.’ he focused on Clara and her laptop.‘This woman was in the elevator yesterday with my sister before she disapp
Celine lies back in bed and curses. ‘How am I going to get out of here if I don’t have clothes?’ So she started exploring Raffy’s bedroom, hoping to find something more decent to wear, when she noticed the pictures on the wall. ‘Fucking pervert!’ she exclaims. There she was, splattered on every surface of the room. Different sizes and images of her. One had her laughing, the other brushing her hair away from her face, and another of her eating. What bothered her more were the pictures of her in different states of undress. In one she was in a bath towel, another in her underwear, while the others had every outfit she has donned in the past year. She even had one in the lingerie she was wearing right now. The pose reminded her about that night she wanted to send Max a naughty video, to which he ended abruptly.
‘Yeah, but my sister, Clara, came… and I needed... You know what, it’s not important. I came by to get my car downstairs. I left it in the building.’‘Hey, tell me, isn’t the boss dating your sister? Is it true that they got married?’ she whispered while getting closer to Celine.‘Yeah, they did. It was a lovely ceremony. I helped plan it.’‘That’s a big ring you have on your finger. Rumor has it that you’re married as well.’‘Can you keep a secret? I got married in Vegas last weekend. Eeekkk…’ Celine said excitedly.May squealed, ‘Omg, are you serious? That is so unexpected. We knew you were dating but didn’t know it
