Naomi's POV
The day I've been dreading is finally here.
Yes, the first day of hell on earth.
High school, the place everyone hates and wants to leave but misses it as soon as they leave.
But there's no time to be sad because college is waiting, not to mention many part-time jobs and seniors at college frat parties, itching to take advantage of the clueless high schoolers who think sleeping with a frat boy will automatically make them popular. And let's not forget being an 18 or 19 years old virgin was a social taboo.
I mean don't get me wrong...... they might get popular.
But not for the reasons they think.
I continue my mental rant as I slip into some black leggings and white oversized long-sleeved shirt.
As I stepped into the new flats I got last week I look at myself in my full length mirror.
To be completely honest I didn't like what I saw.
But who cares right?
I grab my bag and head downstairs when I hear a sudden scream outside. From the sound of the scream I knew it was Riley so naturally, I went to see what it was.
I half run half jog down the stairs and out the house only to see Riley in the driver's seat a brand new car with a bow on the top.
"Did you?" I ask my uncle.
"Yep." He replies with a broad smile.
She's been hinting she wants a car ever since she passed her driving test last year. And Uncle Dave did a great job, it seems like she got the one she wanted.
"Congrats on getting your first car." I lean over and tell her from the passenger side.
"Thanks." she says with a bright smile.
"I think it's time you two got going." He says referring to the time.
"Do I have to bring her?" Riley asks clearly displeased with the idea.
But he never got the chance to answer the sounds of our new neighbors who got our full attention. We had no idea what they were saying since they were speaking Korean.
It wasn't hard to guess she was probably telling him to hurry up so he wouldn't be late for his first day.
When she noticed us she smiled and gave us a quick wave then quickly got into her car, Hero was not far behind as he closed the door. In no time at all Riley was out of her car and across the street talking to our neighbors.
"Is she offering him a ride?" I ask Dave.
"I think so." He says with a puzzled look.
"She must really like him," I add as Dave and I watched their exchange like two creeps from across the street.
All three of them look at us at the same time, like the creeps we are we smiled and waved at them. They gave us weird glasses before going back to their conversation.
When I saw Riley returning with Hero a sudden panic filled me and the memories of him catching me looking into his room.
With every step, he took closer I could feel the color draining from my face.
"Good morning sir." He says to Dave with a slight bow then nods to me with a small smile but I'm too embarrassed to react so I avert my gaze.
"Morning Hero, You ready for your first day." He asks with a friendly smile.
"I think I'll be fine, plus Riley promised to show me around and introduce me to a couple of her friends." He explains.
"Good, then I'll see you guys after school. Have fun on your first day." Dave says waving us off as he crosses the street to talk with Hero's mom.
"Let's get going then." Riley says with a big grin.
"Wait I forgot something!" I exclaim then took off running back to my room.
It was only the first day!
How could I forget my medication!
And now I have to worry about this guy telling people I was creeping on him. How could my senior year become worse before it starts?
Hero's mom and Dave wave goodbye to us as we get into the car to leave.
As expected Riley let Hero drive shotgun and I had to ride in the back.
To avoid any awkward conversations I quickly stuck my earphones in and pulled out the book I was rereading from my bag. The drive to school wasn't very long but I was a fast reader. Plus it's not my first time reading this book.
For a moment I got lost in my book then I suddenly felt like someone was watching me. Out of pure instinct, I looked up only to find Hero looking back at me, as we made eye contact I quickly averted my gaze.
I made sure not to look at him for the rest of the drive but I could occasionally feel his gaze on me and it made me want to squirm at times but I kept my composer.
As soon as we pulled into the school's parking lot I was out of the car faster than someone could say my name.
I make a beeline for my locker and then head straight to my first class.
At most schools, the first day wouldn't be anything much but it was different here, we picked up our books a week ago and brought all our stuff to our lockers too. We were also informed that we should be ready for class since we are seniors introductions aren't necessary.
We know every staff and more than half the school's population.
Our literature teacher walked in and she smiled at us.
"Good morning everyone, I hope your summer was more eventful than mine." She jokes as she walks over to her desk.
Everyone starts cheering and talking about their summer while I stayed quiet. Some said it was boring others said it was fun.
"Alright, that's enough." She waves her hands to get us to quiet down.
"Before we go any further I have a surprise for you guys so I want your full attention." The class instantly goes quiet and gives her their full attention.
For some teachers, it is hard to control students but for her getting hormonal teens to behave is like breathing not to mention her presence alone commands respect.
"Come on in!" She says loudly and the class doors suddenly opens and in walks the one person I did not want to see.
"Introduction please." She says smiling at him.
"Good morning everyone, I'm Hero." He says and his deep voice vibrates the air as he bows slightly. The girls instantly start whispering about him.
"Hero and his mom recently moved here from Korea, I know you'll make him feel welcomed. And I hope you stay on your best behavior."
"Yes ma'am." He says with a smirk.
"Now, do we have any volunteers to show Hero around?" Our teacher asks but half of the females put their hands up.
"Ladies please, keep your hormones in check." She says rolling her eyes making a majority of the class giggle. "How about you Naomi?" She asks smiling at me."
Damn it, why did she have to pick me.
"Uh, sure," I say trying to show the panic felt at that moment.
Why me?
"It must be faith since we're neighbors." He says smiling at me.
Multiple envious looks were sent my way in less than a millisecond.
"That makes it even better, someone you're familiar with." She adds with a clap of her hands. The girls in the class glare and scuff and I'm sure one sneered at me.
He walks over to me and more panic fills me and I start to breathe heavily. Stay calm Naomi, remember your heart
I tell my self trying to calm down, but it wasn't working so I closed my eyes and took deep breaths.
When I opened my eyes I could see Miss. Jack smiling at me.
"Let's get started class, you know the drill. I want a three thousand word essay on how your summer went, double spaced and bound and it's due next week so get cracking." She says the entire class erupts in groans and complaints.
"Quiet down people, you know we always do this so I see no reason to complain." She drawls.
I raise my hand to get her attention since I was too shy to call out to her.
"Yes, Naomi."
"I kinda guessed you would ask this so I already wrote mine," I say shyly.
"Loser."
"Loner."
Are the comments I got while the others laughed.
"Keep up the good work." She says with a smile.
"Teacher's pet."
"One more comment it's detention for a month. Now apologize." Miss Jack says sternly.
The persons who commented mumbled sorry and that was it.
I spent the rest of class reading my book, while everyone got started on their essay.
Miss Jack already knows they're all going to lie on the essays but she still asks them to write it anyways but what really surprises me every time is that she actually spends the time time to go through each and every one of them and grade it.
I'm pulled out of my thoughts by something poking me from behind. I turn only to find Hero looking at me with a small smile.
"What?" I ask a little more harshly than I planned to.
I could see he was taken aback by my tone but he tried his best to hide it.
"How's it going." He simply asks and we gain a few glances.
"Fine." I say.
"Good I need some help." He says with a grin.
"Help with what?"
"My essay." He says motioning to the paper he started writing on.
"Why?" I ask feeling a little bit confused.
"My English isn't that great yet." He mumbles and I feel stupid for asking the moment the words leave his mouth.
"Oh. Um sure." She says feeling a bit bad for answering him too harsh.
"No talking until your done Hero." Miss Jack warns.
"Sorry miss." He says and after that, we stayed quiet until class was over
I was the first one out the door since I didn't have anything to do but what surprised me was Hero who appeared next to me in the corridor.
I didn't say anything out of fear of embarrassing myself, so I kept walking to my locker but she kept following me.
"Can I help can you?" I ask him when I finally reach my locker and he was still hot on my heels.
"Yeah but after school." He says with a smile then opens the locker next to mine.
No way in hell his locker is next to mine.
I stand in front of my open locker not moving or saying a word. My mind wandered off, occupied by the thought of how he got the locker next to mine.
Then the answer suddenly hit me.
No one wants a locker next to the girl who might kick the bucket early.
"Hey, are you doing okay.?" Hero asks suddenly.
"Yeah, your English is really good. Who thought it to you?" I ask trying to change the subject.
His expression suddenly went blank as he closed the locker turned and walked away like I didn't exist.
To be honest it didn't bother me as much as it should but it did seem a little bit weird. Why would that be his reaction to me asking how he learned to speak English.
Did he feel like I was being racist or something?
His mom did say they moved here from Korea, or maybe they just moved back?
Either way, it's really none of my business, next time we speak I'll be sure not to ask any personal questions.
As the bell rang I closed my locker and headed to my next class.
The day went by exactly as I expected it to except for lunch when Hero tried to get me to have lunch with Riley and her friends.
I mean it was understandable, he's new here and doesn't know how things work yet. But by being friends with Riley he was guaranteed a spot with the cool kids.
Lucky him.
I decided to catch the bus home since I had a feeling Riley wouldn't want to take me. She's probably going to ditch me to hang out with her friends.
Naomi's POVThe bus ride took forever since it had to stop at multiple streets. I didn't let it bother me too much since it was better than walking home.
Naomi POVI woke up in the same position I fell asleep with the book in hand laying across my bed. I scramble for my phone to check what time it was.I thanked the gods that I had time to get ready. I rushed to the shower to get washed after that I quickly packed my bag for school and pulled out something simple yet decent to wear.I grabbed blue ripped denim, a blue tank top, and a thin white oversized shirt. I then tried my hair into its usual messy bun, I stepped into my new flats and headed downstairs. As I enter the kitchen I head straight for the fridge to grab my usual breakfast along with a disposable fork. I check the key rack and I noticed that it was empty. I came to the conclusion
Hero's POVI woke up to the sound of the special ringtone I set for my mom. It was a recording of her nagging me.I quickly opened my eyes and grabbed the phone to answer."Good morning omma." I say trying not to sound sleepy."Why do you sound so sleepy, did you just wake up?She asks instantly catching on."No I've been up for 15 minutes now. I just waited on Rily to take us to school. I have to go omma I think she's ready." I lie handing up on her.I know she was going have my head for hanging up on her later but I wasn't going to miss my ride since I don't how
Naomi's POV My last class was on the stop floor, since I didn't want to bump into the girls who were talking about me early I stayed back in the classroom for a while. Amber found her way to where I was and a sigh escaped my body. "Hey Naomi, did you talk to him?" She asks taking a seat on the teachers desk. "He said no." I tell her plain and simple. They same way he told me. "What?" Shock overtook her features as soon as the words left my lips. "I bet she didn't even try." Her minion Joy scoffed at me. "Shut up Joy, she's not like that." Amber surprised me by defending me. "Look I told you that he and I aren't as close as you think." I tell them. But I also had to wonder what he saw me as since he searched for me today just to give me my Scrunchy back. Maybe he just didn't want to admit I was his friend so he could get into the clique of cool k
Naomi's POV Time trickled by slowly and it seemed as if the weekend would never come. Or maybe I was too excited for the book sale tomorrow. As the bell rang signaling the end of class I wasted no time heading to my locker and then straight for the upstairs bathroom. Since it was upstairs it was hardly occupied so I always go there to read during lunch. I go into my usual stall, I close the lid inspecting it to make sure its clean before I sit on it. About 10 minutes into reading my book I hear the slam open. "What this about Amber?" I hear Riley's voice ask. I stay quiet not wanting them to know I'm here. I start praying that they don't check the stalls and find out I'm here. "You know exactly what its about." Amber tells her in a matter of fact tone. They both stay quiet for an unusually long time before Mina spoke up again. I assume they were having a staining contest. "Don't play dumb with me Riley, you know i
Naomi's POVThe first week of over, which meant that summer had officially ended. But my fellow school mates were in denial, so their having a second end of summer party. As I sat cross legged on my yoga mat reading my book, I couldn't but glance at Riley and she fidget and fiddle her thumbs. No doubt she wanted to know if Dave was working tonight so she can go to the party. If he is working than she can go without asking. If not she has to come up with a good last minute excuse that'll convince him to let her go. But. If she just flat out ask him if he's working tonight he'll figure out she's up to something. And if she doesn't stop fidgeting soon, he's still going to find out something's up."Hey Dave.""Yeah?""How are things going at the hospital?" I ask nonchalantly.I shocked expressi
Hero's POVAs soon as Riley pulled up to house where the party was being held, you could hear loud music from outside. At the front the enormous house was filled with various types of cars, but not many people where out here.Only a few people here and there. When we finally get inside the house was packed and the music was deafening. Even though it was still early the party was in full swing and people were already drunk.Riley walked through the house confidently like she knew the place so I just follow her with no questions. She we came to a more secluded area, there less people here and more familiar faces. This part of the house seemed to be where most of the seniors were.In here had a more chilled and relaxed vibe, even though the same music was being blasted through the house. We soon stop
Naomi's POVAbout half an hour after everyone left for the party I glued myself in front of the computer. I sat there patiently while rereading the fourth harry potter book.Time ticked by quicker than I expected it to and before I knew it there was only 45 minutes until the books went on sale.I had my card ready and I was logged in on my phone ready brag about getting a copy.As I refreshed the Facebook page of the fanclub I was in new post from the other members who were excited to purchase the series popped up, people even started their own countdown. As I was reading a post my phone suddenly ran and I was surprised by who was calling. It was Hero. Why would he be calling me at this hour?Unless something happened to Riley, he wouldn't have a reason to call.
Naomi's POVThere was a strange buzz circulating through my body. I can't remember the last time I felt like thisIs thus what excitement felt like? Was I really thar excited to go to a party?I rummage through all my clothes but I couldn't find anything similar to what Riley and her friends were to these parties.I don't even know what I'm going to do with my hair. Why do high schoolers go these things? They're so stressful.I pull out the tightest pair of ripped jeans I own then begin the search for the only crop top I own. It was a white spaghetti strap crop top with a cute blue butterfly embroidered in the center of of it.After finding my outfit I headed straight for the shower, as I washed my hair I wondered what I was going to do with it for the party.
Naomi's POVCollege. The one thing everyone should be thinking about. But instead, only 10% of us take it seriously maybe even less. Instead of thinking about our future we think about out next move, the next party and an array of things that's aren't as important as our future.Frankly thinking about is stressful, so why not avoid the thought completely whenever you can? Focus on enjoying your last year of high school before officially becoming an adult. At least that's what I think other kids my age are thinking. But for me it's different.I try to steer clear of those thoughts, even though they ever so often cross my mind as if they think I don't have other things to worry about. As lay on the grass these are things that float freely through my mind, I much to think about and most days it feels
Riley's POVMy brain felt like it was going to explode from all the thinking I've been doing lately.I lied to dad at dinner earlier when I said I didn't choose a college yet, in fact I had chosen three. I've even drafted up application letters and started doing research about the different scholarships I could apply for.I was too afraid to tell him all of this incase he wasn't able to afford it. I know he told me not to worry but I can't help but worry.Ever since our mom's died, he's been the only one taking care of us, none of our family members ever chipped in to help dad. The only time we ever got help was to pay for the funeral. Not to mention, only time they call is once a year on the anniversary of our mom's death and that's it. They don't call on birthdays, they don't call at Thanksgiving, the don't even call for Christmas and new y
Naomi's POVI found myself glued to the romance book that Josh suggested, it was no doubt one of the best romance books I've ever read. The sound of knocking on my door sounded so distant that I almost didn't answer."Come in!" I yell disturbed. The door suddenly flew open. "Why would I want to come into your book infested room?" Riley says irritated."I'm pretty sure you have a lot of books in your room" I deadpanned."Not as much as you do, like get a life. Anyways I came to tell you dinner is ready." She scoffs before walking away. Its been like this between us lately, she's talking to me way more than usual. I think its because of what I said in the car the other day.I painfully close the book telling it goodbye as I went downstairs for dinner."You've
Naomi's POV Its been a few days since the Amber incident and she hasn't approached me since. I guess the warning Riley gave her worked. I was still a bit down because I didn't get the books wanted Saturday. All the book groups are still buzzing about the books, some people even start getting ther books already. While I had nothing to look forward to. And nothing new to read. To cheer myself up I decided to go to the bookstore down the road, even its run by an old lady she tries her best to keep up with the latest stories and the most popular one while still having all the classics available. Since I'm going to walk there I decided to put on sneakers instead of flats, I glance at my hoodie but decides to leave it, it's just the middle of September the evening's not going to be that chilly. I
Naomi's POVThe weekend came and went as quickly as it came, Hero and Riley didn't get caught thanks to my efforts. And as for me I was miserable. All everyone online talks about online are the books that I faild to purchase.Where does being a good person get you? I'll tell you, nowhere.I leaned against my locker sliding down to the ground in the almost empty halls during lunch time. I pulled out my lunch from my bag and ate it silently. Some gave me weird looks while others just mind their own business. Other loners like myself join and did the same thing I was. One of them even smirked at me."Eww your all so disgusting, can't you get some friends or get a life." A girl named Amber says giving all of us disgusted looks and she walked."Especially you. Pill popper." She scowls at me.
