RILEY'S POV
"Is this the Listener?" The hoarse voice in the dark room asked, just then, the lights went on. I scooted by the corner of the empty room gazing blankly at the middle-aged man in an immaculately tailored suit as he marched my way, leaned into me, his blue eyes were all I could see before he strengthened. "Strip her of all filth, we present her to Prince Norman in two hours." The perfectly coiffed lady in the room doubled over leading me to the connecting room. After a while of bathing, hairdo, and beautiful floral dress, I looked pretty in the mirror. "Can you tell me what my thoughts are right now?" The tall and imposing man raised his chin in subtle challenge when I met him by the door. My horror began. I knew nothing of his thoughts. I bit my tongue and tried not to shake my head as he led me through the long and pearly hallway. I didn't expect it, but they clothed and fed me. It wasn't as terrible as I'd imagined yet, The pancakes tasted better than what I ever had. After breakfast, they led me to the main section of the opulent mansion, my eyes taking in its beauty. Prince Norman wasn't hard to recognize. His iconic golden hair and brilliant green eyes made me realize the man on the threshold of the main building was the son of King Baldwin Edelman. Handsome as always. I gulped. "Chadwick you're late!" He growled, green eyes searching the middle-aged man beside me. "I'm here. She's here, your Majesty," Chadwick amended, bowing courteously. "Get her in the truck, we head East." Prince Norman commanded, starting towards the waiting car, he paused in his tracks, glanced over his shoulder at me before he changed his heart, "No, she'll ride with me." This doubled my anxiety. Was it safe to be the one to tell them I had no such abilities other than waiting until they found out? Disappointment was never a good emotion. This Prince could kill me if he found out in the face of danger I didn't possess the gift he sought. Prince Norman reached the car in no time with his hard jaws clenched, his gaze peering impatiently my way. A nightmare was unfolding before me. Chadwick used his index finger to kick-start me. A jab on my shoulder blade had me moving towards the waiting prince. It was hard not to gawk at the handsome Prince in the morning sun looking like a god straight out of Greek. His sheened hair glowed in the sun, height was intimidating. This had to be a dream. Walking to Prince Norman by his car was a dream I never thought could come true. "What is your name?" He asked when I stood before him, waiting to be granted access to the car. "Riley Cooper," I mumbled quietly with eyes on my sweaty and trembling fingers. I was beyond intimidated. His eyes searched me a little longer than expected, something at the edge of his green eyes that was inexplicable. He nodded, stepped aside, and held the door open for me. Without an idea of where we were headed, I stepped into the car feeling like my heart would convulse at any moment. Norman settled beside me in his seat, his attention on the phone in his hand as his chauffeur set the car in motion. His clenched jaws made it seem he constantly was grinding rocks with his teeth. His gaze darkened dangerously as he typed briefly into his phone, an air of warning settled around his hardened features. His eyes, lips, and how intoxicating his woody scent filling the car to plague my nostrils was. This man would certainly kill me for deception. He cleared his throat and looked away from his phone, eyes falling on mine. I Instantly averted mine, flustering to be caught ogling his way. "Sorry." I gulped, feeling more embarrassed than ever. Norman studied me from the dark end of his car, his long legs stretched out in front of him, a frown plastered on his harshly attractive face, fingers in a steeple in front of his curious lips. How was he real? "Your first task is pretty simple," his deep accent had an eerie effect on me. He considered me briefly before adding, "You're going to attend a meeting with me. Mr. Chadwick will give you a notepad, I need you to write in it every thought in the room, every single thought including mine. Hand this notepad to me afterward." All the air left my lungs. My fingers grew instantly numb. "Is this something you can do, Riley?" His deceptive mildness was one trick I could never fall for. I heard tales of this man's ruthlessness. Tell him the truth! My brain argued. Now was the moment of truth. It was now or never. His brows furrowed when I took longer than demanded to respond. Lying to the High Prince was punishable but his hardened gaze suggested he wasn't the man to mess around with, my head seemed to have a mind of its own because it nodded convincingly. I had no idea how long we'd driven for but the sound of gravel crunching, accompanied by a mechanical whirl forced me to peel my gaze from Norman in a suit and tie to the window. The car drove another minute and pulled up in front of a business complex building. "Can I use the bathroom?" I requested the second my feet touched the ground right after Norman. If cast deaf ears to my request. A phalanx of security guards all in black sleekly tailored suits led us towards the front entrance and stepped aside only when we stepped into the elevator. Mr. Chadwick, Norman's executive assistant, handed me a notepad and whispered into my ears, "Prince Norman's counting on you, don't mess this up." And if I did? "You're not breathing, Riley." Mr. Chadwick pointed out. I nodded regardless and focused more on my breath until we walked into the vast conference room. Bile rose from the pit of my stomach and threatened to spill. This had me more nervous than I ever could be. This certainly was the end of me.RILEY'S POVPrince Norman took his seat at the head of the long conference table flanked by gruff faces of young and elderly noblemen. Mr. Chadwick pointed me to a seat in the middle of the table before he exited the conference room. The occupants of the conference room regarded me momentarily before they glued their gazes to the Prince. This was it. The meeting began, all I could hear remained what everyone else in the room heard, no matter how hard I listened, stared, and prayed to the goddess to save me this one last time, I heard nothing out of the ordinary. Thirty minutes into the meeting, the notepad before me was still as blank as my mind, fifteen more minutes before this meeting was over. The goddess chose to ignore me. As always. My gaze wandered to Prince Norman, his attention too vested in the white-haired man's words to want to pay any glance my way. In no time, Prince Norman got to his feet. The meeting ended. My breath ceased. The blank notepad was a subtle reminde
NORMAN'S POV"She is wolfless," Dr. Walker, an exceptional Pack doctor, handed the results of the tests carried on Riley to me. Now, that explains it. My wolf had the feeling something was off about this listener. "Was she able to perform her first tasks?" Dr. Walker tossed the pen in his hand on his desk, waiting for my reply. "I don't think so." Chadwick imagined it was from stress but I knew otherwise. "Her DNA is a match to that of Goro Wyel, the most gifted Listener the Lycan territories could ever have, she's from the bloodline but not everyone in this bloodline has that gift. She's clearly one of them."Riley wasn't the last and only surviving from this tribe. I had gone through a whole lot to find her just to realize she was point-blank useless to me. I just didn't know how to deal with disappointments. "I send her back to her people?" In a body bag. "We can induce her. There's a fifty-fifty chance of whipping something out.""How long is that going to take?""Eight mon
RILEY'S POVPrince Norman Edelman my fated mate? Or should I say, second chance mate? How was it possible? His proximity knocked out every breath in me. His words had the worst effect on me. I gaped at the man towering before me in the plush bedroom he offered me to stay. My destiny couldn't get any messier. Any funnier. I dared not laugh. This man wasn't the type to appreciate humor. Definitely not the type to settle for a wolfless girl. If Alpha Nate could reject me then this great Lycan Prince certainly won't miss a beat. Maybe my destiny was to pine away all alone like the rest of the Wyels without gifts. I shook my head at his last question. Never in the world would I have imagined this breathtaking Prince was my second chance mate. The mate bond was hard to recognize, his scent, hard to tell. It would've been different if I had a wolf. The same vagueness when Alpha Nate popped out of nowhere to declare himself my mate seized my mind as I remained transfixed before Norman. Hi
Norman's POVDid I just hear right? Did Riley just called him mate?I glared at Damon, my eyes blazing with a fierce protectiveness. Riley was mine, and I wouldn't let anyone, not even my own brother, get in the way.Damon sneered at me, his eyes flashing with anger. "You're really something, Norman," he spat. "You think you can just claim her without even giving her a choice?"I snarled, my claws extending. "She's mine," I growled. "And I won't let you or anyone else take her from me."Riley trembled in my arms, and I tightened my grip around her waist. I could feel her heart racing, and I knew she was scared. But I couldn't help it. I had to protect her.Just as it seemed like things were about to escalate into a full-blown fight, Mr. Crestwood, appeared at the entrance of the antiquated building."Ah, gentlemen," he said, his voice calm and authoritative. "I see we have a bit of a situation on our hands."Damon and I glared at each other, but we both knew better than to disobey the
Riley's POVHearing Damon's request sent a jolt through me. I became instantly dumbfounded staring at everyone. Yet, my eyes captured nothing.I felt like I was stuck in some kind of crazy dream. One minute, I was standing in front of Norman, listening to him declare that I was his mate, and the next, Damon was talking openly about marrying me as his mate.“No way in hell that's happening!” A feminine voice growled, stomping into the room. “You plan to abandon me because of this thing?”I shot up my brow in confusion. Was I being referred to as a thing now?“Meredith?” Damon's eyes shot up inquisitively, “What are you doing here?”“What's going on here?” Mr. Chadwick's loud voice captured everyone's attention.Norman cleared his throat, “She's Meredith Cox, Damon's girlfriend and lover.”I didn't know how to feel about the news. Part of me was drawn to Norman's possessiveness, but another part of me was intrigued by Damon's raw, wild energy. And now, with Damon's girlfriend, Meredith
Riley's POVI sat at the dinner table, feeling like a small fish in a big pond. The nobles around me were all chatting and laughing, but I couldn't help feeling like an outsider.Meredith, Damon's girlfriend, was sitting across from me, her eyes fixed on me with a mixture of disdain and amusement. She didn't miss a beat to openly taunt me about not fitting in."You're really something, aren't you?" she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I mean, who would have thought that a little runt like you would be sitting at the same table as us?"I felt my face heat up with embarrassment, but I tried to keep my cool. I knew that Meredith was just trying to get under my skin. And I wouldn't allow her to have that advantage over me, dealing with her kind of person wasn't new to me.The triplets got up to speak privately to Mr. Crestwood, and Meredith's demeanor changed. She leaned in close to me, her voice taking on a menacing tone."Listen, runt," she said. "I don't know what kind of game y
NORMAN'S POVI watched as Kirk approached Riley, his eyes fixed intently on her. I could feel my anger rising, my instincts screaming at me to protect her. She was mine, my mate, and I wouldn't let anyone take her from me.As Kirk leaned in close to Riley, my face became red. I stormed over to them, my eyes blazing with anger. "Kirk, what the hell are you doing?" I growled, my voice vibrating with rage.Kirk stepped back, a smirk playing on his lips. "I'm just trying to make her happy," he said, his voice smooth as silk. But I wasn't having it. "Get away from her," I snarled, my eyes flashing with anger.Kirk raised an eyebrow, a smirk still playing on his lips. "Or what?" he said, his voice dripping with contempt.I took a step closer to him, my fists clenched. "You know exactly what," I growled. The tension between us was palpable, and I could feel Riley's eyes on us, her fear and confusion quite was quite noticeable. Her eyes roamed between Kirk and I, then she pleaded in a soft vo
Riley's POVOne month later…I stood beside Norman, my heart racing with excitement and a hint of nervousness. We were standing in a beautiful garden, surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant flowers. The crescent moon hung low in the sky, casting a silver glow on the two of us.“What are we doing here?” I asked, looking around.“We are here to become one?” He answered, his eyes focused on me.“Become one?” I inquired, a frown creasing my brows.“Yes, I'm willing to break our law to see that happen.”“What law are you talking about?” I asked, not understanding his statement.“I will tell you later, but for now…” he answered, then his voice trailed off.Was he suddenly nervous? I shook my head. That can't be the case. A powerful man like Norman would never be nervous in front of a runt like me.I was still thinking when I felt him took my hand, his eyes locking on mine. "Riley, from the moment I met you, I knew you were special," he said, his voice booming with a gracefulness that made
Norman's POVI stood before the round table of the court, my eyes fixed on Mr. Crestwood and the other kingmakers. They were the ones who would decide my fate, determine whether I would be allowed to pursue the throne. And now, they were telling me that my marriage to Riley was a problem."Norman, you have committed a great atrocity by marrying a girl under the crescent moon," one of the kingmakers said, his voice stern. "You must send her back to Hornside and marry another, hence that will void your first marriage."I felt my heart kick in anger at their words. How could they ask me to abandon Riley, the woman I had come to care for? I thought about her innocent smile, her laughter, and her determination—everything that endeared me to her. I couldn't possibly come to terms with leaving her, not because these men here want it that way."I understand that I may have broken the Moonclak law," I begin, trying to keep my tone calm. "But surely there's a way to rectify this situation witho
Riley's POVI watched as Norman's expression changed from carefree to cold and calculating. One moment, he was teasing me about our blissful night, and the next, he was barking orders into the phone. I couldn't understand what was going on, but I knew it couldn't be good.As Norman dismissed the call, I asked him what was wrong. But he just shook his head and told me not to worry about it. "I'll take care of it," he said, his voice firm but distant. But I couldn't help but worry. The court summoning him couldn't be a good thing. "What's going on?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. "Why does the court want to see you?"Norman's expression softened slightly, and he took a step closer to me. "Don't worry about it, Riley. It's nothing you need to concern yourself with. I'll take care of it." I nodded, trying to hide my curiosity. But I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was wrong. Norman's tone was reassuring, but his eyes told a different story. They were narrowed, his
Norman's POVI stepped into the garden, calling out to Riley as she turned to head back to the direction of myroom. She jerked up, startled, her eyes scanning the surroundings until they landed on me. A sigh of relief escaped her lips as she realized it was only me calling to her."Hey, what's wrong?" I asked, my voice laced with amusement. "You look smitten."Riley's cheeks flushed as she shook her head, trying to clear the air. She hadn't even noticed me approaching her."Just lost in thought," she replied, her voice barely audible, just like I had known them to be.I chuckled, my eyes crinkling at the corners. "I know exactly what you're thinking about," I teased, my voice low and husky. "Our blissful night, perhaps?"Riley's face turned bright red as she laughed shyly, trying to hide her embarrassment. My words must have sent a flutter through her chest, reminding her of the intimacy we had shared. As we walked back into the suite, my phone rang, shrill and insistent. I pulled it
Riley's POVI woke to an unfamiliar sensation, a tingling feeling that spread through every part of my body. The room, too, felt strange, too grand and opulent, a stark contrast to the simple, and portable room I was used to. My eyes drifted over the plush furnishings, the rich tapestries adorning the walls, the sunlight streaming through the large windows, the strange artworks of powerful wolves. All was beautiful, breathtaking even, but it totally felt… alien.I stared around briefly, then slowly, the memories of last night flooded back, causing my stomach to churn loudly. Norman. His touch, his scent, the way he’d looked at me, a mixture of tenderness and possessiveness that had both thrilled and frightened me. He’d taken me to a place I’d never been before, a place of pure sensation, where only he and I existed. He’d marked me, claimed me as his. It still felt surreal, it had all happened so fast.A blush crept up my cheek as I recalled the intimacy we’d shared, the way my body ha
Norman's POVThe shock on Riley's face almost sent me reeling with laughter when I told her I wanted to make love to her. Her confusion mirrored the first time she was bought to this pack, only that this time, it was for an entirely different thing. An entirely different scenario.“Don't you want it?” I probed and she shook her head.I was already used to her not saying any words so I didn't hold it against her. But then, as my mate and now my wife, I needed her full consent if I wanted to consummate our union. If it was up to me, or had it been any other girl, I'd have leave her presence and move to other important stuff. But she wasn't any other girl, she was my mate and I understand how tender and innocent she is. Who knows? Maybe it's her innocence that draw me even closer to her.I held her hand, making sure I maintained eye contact. I could see her mouth form in a twitch, as if she wanted to say something, but she closed her mouth again and became quiet. I knew right then, I had
