Reese

I burned through a ridiculous amount of time and energy chasing dead ends, and I had almost given up altogether when I felt that first gentle pull. I had collapsed to the ground, resting my legs after travelling through most of the night when I noticed the first sign of something off.

I had expected to find Scarlett within the hour, but my expectations were thwarted before long as the hour turned into me journeying through the territories in search of my wayward mate.

She had managed to stay one step ahead of me this entire time, and I was nearing the point of exhaustion.

Regrettably, I knew I would have to find somewhere to rest before I passed out in my present spot. I hated the idea of closing my eyes without her safe in my arms beside me, but I wouldn’t be of any use to her if I got myself killed while dozing out in the open.

I couldn’t get the thought of rogues, bears, or any other heretofore unfamiliar threat out of my mind, having dispatched a few roaming males already during my search. They had served as excellent targets while I burned through my fury at failing to find Scarlett.

Even so, something inside me directed me when I was at my lowest. It gave me the renewed resolve and clarity I needed, and I suddenly knew where to go.

I ran east, not knowing if I was going crazy or receiving a helping hand from Luna, but choosing to follow my instincts, nonetheless, as energy coursed through me anew.

I worried the more distance I traversed without finding her, but my wolf nearly howled out our bliss when the aroma of wildflowers blooming in springtime wafted in on the breeze. The scent was out of place here in the middle of the forest, but I recognized it the instant it teased my nostrils.

I followed my nose until I found several dead shifters, but I could tell Scarlett hadn’t accomplished this gruesome scene by herself.

I shifted back into my human form, looking for any sign of where she could have gone. There was so much blood permeating the air that it almost drowned out the sweet notes of my mate’s lifeblood soaking into the earth, but I would recognize her personal aroma anywhere.

It had taken me a minute to figure out she was injured before, but I was moving forward again in spite of my resurfacing fatigue after finding the first clue as to where she had disappeared to.

Her scent trail was easy to find due to the dripping blood, but it seemed to fade the further I followed it from the bodies. I remembered she hadn’t been alone and clenched my fists as I thought of another male touching her, and as my mind jumped to worst case scenarios.

I transformed back into my wolf, following the scent of the stranger. The fragrant aroma of bellflowers and day lilies was faint but present all the same, mixed with the repugnant odor of the unknown male. It dawned on me then that she was being carried; it was the only explanation.

My strength was waning, but I pushed myself onward anyway. I knew I was doing terrible timewise, but my relentless trudge forward was rewarded sometime later, regardless, when I found my mate ensconced away in a cave.

The adrenaline from closing in on her had made it easier for me to continue putting one foot in front of the other despite my tired state, but I knew I wouldn’t have made it much further if I hadn’t located her when I did.

My wolf was a determined bastard, but even he was about out for the count.

I was rushing into the opening with no consideration for my surroundings as soon as my eyes landed on Scarlett, wrapped in another male’s scent where she was resting on a pallet of blankets and furs.

I didn’t see where the tan-colored wolf came from in my single-minded pursuit of my mate, but I didn’t stop my wolf’s attack first and ask questions later approach either, feeling pleasure as my wolf’s canines ripped into the other wolf’s wiry flesh.

He didn’t hesitate, immediately retaliating as the situation evolved into a full out brawl. My mind was zoned in on drawing as much blood as possible, tuning out the unnecessary stimuli, so I didn’t hear Scarlett’s pleas for us to stop.

However, I was able to seize the reins from my wolf right as a metal pan came soaring at our heads.

Just my luck, the flying projectile brought me back to reality, causing Scarlett’s words to sink in this time around as she shouted, “What the fuck, guys? Stop it! Jace! Reese!”

I transformed back into my human form, noticing as Jace did the same. I was aware I may have messed up when my mate called the other male by name, but I couldn’t help feeling petty that she had said his name first.

I wrapped my arm around her, pulling her behind me when I saw how the t-shirt she was wearing barely covered her ass.

I was lunging forward, ready to take another swipe at him in response to his self-assured smirk, but he stiffened and moved to the opening of the cave as I charged forward, making me miss my mark as he exclaimed, “Great job! You led the rogues right to us, you idiot.”

My ears detected the sounds of intruders as he finished insulting me. I didn’t bother responding. Readying myself for a fight, I shifted into my dark gray wolf and stalked forward to meet the threat head on after one last look at Scarlett.

I’d worry about berating myself for my mistakes later, but I couldn’t help the fleeting thought passing through my mind that I couldn’t catch a break as I noticed Jace position himself in line with me.

I took in the two midnight-colored wolves sauntering forward as Scarlett’s gorgeous red wolf caught my eye from the periphery.

I wasn’t happy she was in danger, but I was somewhat mollified by her remaining behind Jace and I. The rogues didn’t waste time, splitting ways as they aimed their attacks at Jace and I, avoiding Scarlett for now.

I was relieved to see Jace was a skilled fighter as I tackled my own opponent, but it was short-lived. Pain erupted in my left shoulder as the enemy managed to get a hold of me when my attention was diverted by the massive black bear crashing into the small clearing with us.

I didn’t give him another chance to draw blood, speedily ending his miserable life after Scarlett stepped in. One glance told me Jace had taken care of the other foe and was already engaged in battle with the bear lumbering back. Apparently, he had been banking on his friends being around to help.

It didn’t take long for us to finish him off after that, but I couldn’t get over the fact that a bear shifter had teamed up with the rogues.

I shifted back into my human shape, intending to help Jace get rid of the bodies so we could have the conversation we clearly needed to have, but I didn’t account for all I had put my body through since the last time I rested.

I staggered to the ground with blackness encroaching on my vision. I felt Scarlett’s soft skin on mine and tiny zings of electricity shoot out from the contact, but that was the last thing I recalled before my mind shut off. When I awoke, I was in the cave again.

As soon as I sat up, I physically felt the scowl Jace was virtually boring into the side of my head, drawing my eyes to his icy orbs, and I was startled when I realized I was in the same place Scarlett had been in when I found her prior.

She was within touching distance as I scanned the small space, feeling delighted she had been drawn closer to me while I was unconscious.

Nevertheless, I was eager to get this chat out of the way so I could set off once more with my mate. I needed to get back to my province to check on things, and Jax and Asher needed to know about what happened here.

It hadn’t taken me long into our discussion to figure out there was history between Jace and Scarlett. Jealousy was not something I was familiar with, but I knew it was what was saturating my system when I pieced together the signs.

Neither of them came right out and said it, but Jace’s pissy mood made it clear Scarlett had told him about our connection. His disgruntlement was what gave me the strength I needed to resist dredging up the past for now and to focus on what we needed to get through.

Scarlett gratefully agreed to accompany me to the Western Territory, and Jace respected her wishes, letting her leave without a single argument. My esteem for him grew, knowing he honored our Moon Goddess’ intentions, but I still didn’t like him.

Just the same, his parting taunt did its job, answering any niggling doubts I’d had and revealing the level of his acquaintance with my true mate as he nonchalantly vowed while we were walking away, “You know where to find me if you decide to reject this one too, baby.”

Scarlett I had never seen Reese’s wolf before, but I would have bet everything I owned on the long-furred, gray wolf who appeared out of thin air being my mate, anyhow. Initially, I felt elation at his arrival, but it was overshadowed by the ensuing pandemonium unfolding after his advent. I wasn’t able to process the events transpiring around me until after I made Jace help me get Reese back inside the cave when he lost consciousness after the fight. I hadn’t noticed the dark shadows under his eyes before, but I couldn’t unsee his worn-out countenance now that I had, not feel horrible for putting him through the wringer when he had done nothing wrong. I searched my mind for another topic. I wasn’t ready to confront my inner demons, but I wasn’t thrilled with the alternate path I latched onto in my desperation either. It wasn’t easy to accept my former friends had completely changed from when I knew them. The bear shifter had s

Reese I’d fought right alongside my males and the other alphas for two long years against the invading bears, and those years had been fraught with danger and death around every corner. Many wolves hadn’t made it through the darkest times in our recent history to be able to forge new beginnings. Even so, I honestly believed my jaunt through the forest with my mate to my home base would be what finally did me in. Our progress was slow at first due to our injuries and exhaustion, but we eventually made it to the pack house in the Western Province a few hours ago. It had been hell keeping my hands off of Scarlett, especially with Jace’s scent still clinging to her skin the few times we shifted shapes, and I was ultimately unable to resist at least kissing her enticing lips once more. She may have fled afterward, but it didn’t escape my notice that she returned my affections until she tore herself away, fleeing in a flustered stat

Reese The renovations were coming along nicely, and there hadn’t been any more rogue attacks nearby since we arrived in the Western Province a few days ago. I idly wondered how long the calm would hold before everything went to shit again. Once I was sure Oliver was prepared for my absence, I found Scarlett, wearing a new path through the front lawn as she anxiously paced back and forth. “Are you ready to go, Fire?” She froze, stiffening as I approached, but she relaxed a second later, answering, “Yes. My wolf needs to run.” She didn’t dither, pulling the hem of the striking blue blouse she was wearing up and over her head as she finished her statement. I ripped my gaze away from her tantalizing curves on full display, knowing we would never make it to my personal refuge if I let myself drink in her figure. “Remember to stay with me. Scarlett My mind was racing a million miles a minute as I moved my feet over the rocky earth, wearing a path into the ground with the number of times I had already traversed it waiting for Reese so I could finally shift into my wolf de novo. I hated not being free to do as I wished, but I was used to the limitations after living under Zeke for so long. That wasn’t to say I was a stranger to breaking the rules, but I understood the importance of them this time, so I restrained myself from sneaking off for a sprint on my own. We had been here for a few days, but I hadn’t seen much of my mate. He crept into my room each night and slept near me as his wolf, but I made a concerted effort to avoid him at all costs each morning after. I knew it wasn’t the mature thing to do, but I was still struggling to come to terms with the idea of having another male in my life for any period of time, let alone another true mate. R

Scarlett Communication was hard while I was on four legs rather than two without mind link to connect Reese and I as we ran in sync after the scout. It was near impossible with us stealthily tailing the wolf who had been spying on us, and it made interacting with one another difficult, to say the least. I wasn’t sure if Reese had seen the same thing as me, but he followed after me without a second thought, regardless. Nonetheless, I didn’t need his deep voice constantly cautioning me in my head through mind link to know I needed to fall back as I began to comprehend the magnitude of what our sleuth led us to sometime later. Reese stayed shoulder to shoulder with me as I dashed back to the vehicle, but I didn’t bother shifting shapes when we got there. My mind was still reeling with the unmistakable indicators of the impending battle heading our way that Reese and I had uncovered. I registered him speaking

Reese My mind had been a muddled mess ever since the first second I’d laid eyes on the fiery vixen soaking in the hot springs before me in Jax’s lodge about a month ago, but I had felt more myself over the last several days as I used my analytical side to give the others the best chance to fend off the incoming attack. I hadn’t originally been sure if the infiltrators would follow the same pattern as they had been, but my beta had kept me updated about their movements on the fringe, so it was music to my ears when Oliver informed me the bears had funneled in through the North as we intended when they launched their assault. I had been consumed with dealing with all the information filtering in from elsewhere since the evacuation went off without a hitch. Consequently, Scarlett had been able to successfully avoid the topic of how she was so familiar with the bear shifters up until now. I slipped into the temperate water beside her, wad

Reese I awoke in the morning feeling better than I had any other day of my life, the difference being Scarlett had allowed me to ensconce her in my arms for the remainder of the night as we found the land of dreams together. The pleasant feeling coursing through my blood put an extra pep in my step as Scarlett and I set off for the bears’ territory. I had rigged up a bag I would be able to carry on my shoulders as we traversed the country, but I needed my mate to secure it in place before she shifted. I didn’t let myself admire her mile-long legs or other desirable assets, knowing we would never make it to the bears before the elder if I started down that path. I was thrilled with the progress I made in getting my other half to fully accept me, but my wolf was antsy to advance to the claiming stage. His reluctance then and now to seek out Jace again was palpable, but I saw the effort he put into trying to set aside his differences after my entreaty. I refocused on my environs then, knowing we were getting closer to Jace, but my mind never strayed far from my mate. Scarlett About Two Weeks Later… It took a while for everyone to figure out where they wanted to settle once it had finally began to set in that the war was truly over. Of course, I remained in the Western Province with my true mate, but there had been a lot of reshuffling so far, and I was expecting even more in the coming weeks. Travel had been restricted before, but everything was entirely different since Hunter’s and Clarissa’s deaths, and since the disturbing truth about my former friend’s actions had been unveiled. I still couldn’t believe I had never known how warped they were on the inside, but any sadness I may have felt from their passing vanished when I thought about the number of deaths that they were collectively responsible for over the years. Needless to say, I hadn’t seen a shred of the children I’d befriended so long ago since either one of the bears had reentered my life, not that I ha

Reese It took every ounce of my self-control to remained fixed in place when the earsplitting roar rent the air, but Scarlett hadn’t informed me she was in trouble, so I clawed at the rocky earth beneath my paws until the time was right. I had a clear vision of the field from where I was positioned, my wolf’s superior vision helping in this respect, and I’d ordered my warriors forward the second my mate faltered with the outpouring of bear shifters into the open area, elated the bears had walked right into our trap. I saw Clarissa prowl in the direction of my true mate as our males defended our land. Concern for Scarlett arose to the forefront of my mind, but my eyes alit upon the massive, scarred beast setting his sights on my other half in the next instant. I was aware Rias and his males would arrive at any minute, and I wasn’t losing my one opportunity to repay some of the damage Hunter had inflicted over the years before t

Scarlett I was lost to the world after I’d crashed for the night, not even noticing when Reese slithered into the bed beside me, but I did register his abrupt movement as he shot out of bed sometime later. The incessant ringing emanating from the blackness around where I believed the night table was on the other side of the bed indicated what had awoken me from my slumber. Moreover, my mate hurriedly silenced the noise, answering the phone before it completed another loop of the tune he’d set. The resulting harried conversation I overheard told me everything I needed to know, and I began steeling myself for the conflict barreling straight for us, knowing I would never have to deal with my ex again after tonight if I could pull myself together long enough to fulfill my role in everything. My mate confirmed what I already knew a moment later as he hung up the phone, announcing in a matter-of-fact tone, “Hunter is leading his males throu

Scarlett The next day and a half seemed to drag by, but it wasn’t for a lack of things to do, that was for damn sure. Reese had been so busy making certain our ducks were all in a row before the bears invaded that we’d hardly had any time for each other. It didn’t help the rogues had begun their guerilla warfare in earnest once more, but I had a feeling my true mate was on to something prior when he’d said their sporadic attacks were a distraction method. My mate and I announced the threat heading our way to our pack members and guests, instructing them of their part in the whole scheme of things, though it mostly boiled down to the visitors staying within the town limits while our warriors helped secure the province. A few of the male members of the Ursidae species who had been keeping watch over the female werebears and their children during the turmoil in the bears’ land expressed their desire to help fend off Hunter’s incursion.

Reese Another damn group of rogues were trying to breach our borders again this evening. They didn’t make it far before I’d caught the faint smell of lady palm, but their attempt didn’t piss me off any less, irrespective. I thanked Luna and Kyle both that I had received the serum when Scarlett and I returned from our mission a couple of days ago as I took off after the trespassers who didn’t know we had the capability of detecting them. My wolf’s claws slashed through the dirt as I raced onward, forgetting about the nippy bite to the air as adrenaline rushed in, and I centered all my concentration on finding the menace lurking in my province. I ran into a few of my pack members who were out monitoring the borders during my pursuit, and the rogues were promptly taken care of with the assistance my warriors provided, afterward. There was nothing out of the ordinary as I finished the last portion of my circuit on patrol, so my wo

Reese Ronnie gave me a subtle thumbs up as she entered the dining room with my mate trailing behind her. Resulting, I breathed a sigh of relief, getting up to embrace Scarlett before she could take her seat next to me. I wasn’t proud to admit it, but I had snuck into the kitchen while she was showering this morning to ask the other she-wolf for a favor before I’d hunted down Ryker. Kyle had earned my trust, but that didn’t change the fact that my other half continued to be exhausted, and I had recently noticed other small things off about her too. I wasn’t sure if it was caused by side effects from the serum or something else entirely, but I was pleased Ronnie had agreed to discreetly check it out, nonetheless. Ronnie’s sign of encouragement allowed me to relax my stiff posture, but a hint of my unease remained after consulting Scarlett and I’s mating bond. The two she-wolves were the last to arrive, and the food was a

Scarlett I stirred in my sleep, something pulling at my consciousness, but the heavy weight of my mate’s arm snug around me and his pine and cinnamon fragrance combatted with whatever it was. Relaxing back into my bliss, I forgot about the momentary intrusion altogether. That was, until the same annoying sound repeated, but this time, it was much closer. The knocking recurred yet again from outside my bedroom door, making it impossible to ignore. Thump, thump, thump! I groaned, already lamenting my morning lost in bed with my true mate, so my mood was surly when I threw the door open a minute later. In any event, my irritated words died on my lips when I saw Ronnie on the other side of the door, and I greeted her with a hug while I heard Reese moving around in the room behind me. “Hey Scar, I figured I’d return the favor.” She smirked, giving me a cheeky grin before she continued, “I was knocking on the front

Scarlett Reese was striding up to my side as soon as we arrived at the training grounds, blanketing me in his embrace once he was within touching distance, so he heard the tail end of my uncle’s statement. “We’ll work it out kid. You’ve got enough on your plate to worry about for now, and we’re grown adults. You’ve done enough already.” Rowan said kindly, patting me on the back before he set off to join the other males who were already warming up. I remained silent, pondering everything I’d learned today. My uncle’s words were slowly sinking into my psyche, but my mate’s deep voice intruded before long. “Are you all right, sweetheart?” He inquired, disregarding the various people who were waiting on us as he squeezed me tighter into his strong chest like we had all the time in the world. I glanced up to meet his stunning silver orbs, answering, “Yeah, it’s just Logan and Rowan working through their issues.
