Scarlett

Last night was indescribable, words wouldn’t do the glimpse of heaven justice, and I wasn’t going to attempt it.

Instead, I spent the majority of the morning lost in a daze as I relived the carnal activities Reese and I had partaken in at the hot springs, and later in our bed when we’d made it home.

My mate’s brawny arms dragging me into the hard lines of his body in the balmy water had replayed in my head a hundred times.

I vividly remembered the ensuing ecstasy he sent coursing through my system with his mating bite every time I thought about the imprint of his canines permanently affixed to where the slope of my neck ended.

The strength of the orgasms he masterfully wrought on my body left me exhausted on a bone-deep level.

I knew I had subsequently drifted off into a peaceful sleep in his arms after I had fallen from my high, thanking Luna for giving me a second chance at happiness as blackness encroached

Scarlett The next few days passed by, and I continued to put off asking Logan about the female bear shifters. There had been plenty occurring to keep my mind busy, but I knew I was using the events as an excuse. There had been a couple of attacks by rogues since we returned, mostly here and in the Eastern Province, but our males had thankfully been able to fend off the assaults with little damage incurred. Reese had also informed me about how Jax believed the bears were pulling back to plan their next move during one of our long nights entangled with one another. Apparently, the other alpha had sent scouts further into the bears’ land, feeling daring with their recent absence, and, oddly enough, there hadn’t been a sighting yet. I was worried about what Hunter was planning, and I had a sneaking suspicion I would be involved in some way, especially with the three remaining elders complicating things now. Two of t

Reese The last few days had been stressful, to say the least. The rogue wolves in the area had elected to renew their sporadic attacks, though there were no signs of the other menaces who endangered our future, thankfully. I had been in contact with Jace recently, and he confirmed he had been coordinating with Ryker to fend off a few minor spats that had occurred with the rogue wolves all over the Eastern Province, as well. All the same, I couldn’t stop thinking about the timing of everything, and my brain returned to pondering the situation with the rogues once more as I moved around the training grounds, monitoring the males who were sparring in human form today. I had never slacked in my job of keeping my warriors in shape and quick on their feet, so my males didn’t require much correction. Even so, I kept my keen eyes open, paying attention to their skillsets and tucking the information away for later. Dealing with rogues

Reese I had only been sitting in my office for a few minutes the next morning when Kyle found me. I had my hand poised on the receiver of the landline, getting ready to phone Ryker, but I leaned back in my chair upon the bear shifter’s entrance. Asher was set to arrive later with Mari and the leader of the dragon clan, Zacharias, so I was understandably on edge as I attempted to dot all my i’s and cross my t’s. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I wanted to be as prepared as possible given the numerous unknown variables surrounding the circumstances. The dragon shifters had been a mostly unknown entity before now, but the Alpha of the Eastern Province had smashed through that barrier. However, he hadn’t breathed a word of what he’d learned to date, so I was still ignorant of anything related to the other species of shifter. Scarlett had already checked in with me through mind link a few times due to the emotions I was putting o

Scarlett I had no clue Kyle was the male who had figured out how to mask the bears’ scent, but it didn’t surprise me in the least after observing how competent of a healer he was. Obviously the news he’d been the brains behind the chemical weapon that had allowed the bear shifters to wreak havoc amongst our population wasn’t all sunshine and daisies, but there was a silver lining, irrespective. Kyle was well acquainted with the inner workings of how the compound operated, so I was convinced he would be able to find a workaround we could use to our advantage. Following, he proved me right when he informed me that all he lacked was a test subject. I loathed the feeling of emptiness pervading my being when Reese left the room, so I didn’t stick around the vacant office after Ronnie and I had successfully convinced her mate to allow a meeting between her and Kyle. I was craving company after the copious amount of free time I’d had

Scarlett I was rushing outside in a flash to confirm Reese’s unbelievable report, but there was no denying my meek, blonde-haired friend was sitting astride a massive, gleaming dragon with her mate, Asher. I was assuming the dragon was Zacharias, but I wouldn’t know for sure until after introductions were made, which would prove impossible if he wasn’t able to land safely. The canopy of trees nearby swayed with the wind created by his flapping wings as he suspended himself in the air, no doubt looking for the ideal location to touch down. Really the only option was the fairly decent sized open stretch of grass near the pack house, which I noticed the dragon was currently hovering over, but he was ginormous and still took down a few pin oaks with his succeeding descent. I was just grateful he’d missed the house, but I didn’t think my mate would be as lax about the downed trees. I had registered Reese following after me,

Reese I’d observed the mutual respect that seemed to have developed between Zacharias and Asher during the short period of their acquaintance earlier this afternoon, but I noticed it again tonight as they each sat opposite the chair Mari had recently vacated. The she-wolves were clearing the dishes from the table while I filled the males in on everything that had been occurring here in the wolves’ provinces, including the serum Scarlett and Zoey had taken earlier today. I took a minute to mind link with Oliver, who was presently fighting Asher for the last slice of chocolate cake, letting him know that we would be in charge of taking care of the dishes tonight. He grumbled, especially after he lost his bid for the dessert, but I knew he’d be there right alongside me after we finished this conversation. The dragon shifter remained quiet for the most part, listening as the other alpha clarified any needed points, but he sat up s

Scarlett I barely resisted the urge to barge into my father’s room last night, but all bets were off this morning. I’d let him keep his secrets up until this point, but the threat level had escalated with Asher and Rias’s news about the bears’ movements. I couldn’t afford to humor Logan’s stalling anymore, and he instantly noticed my subdued mood when I entered his room, the smile dropping from his face with the storm clouds accompanying my arrival. I’d tried starting with casual conversation the few times I’d mentioned the sore spot in the past, but he’d just turned a deaf ear on my inquiries or diverted the topic altogether when I brought them up, regardless of my approach. I didn’t push then, wanting to give him time to work through his own hang-ups, but the new intel we’d received yesterday changed everything. So, I didn’t dither this morning like I had in the past, launching into the heart of the matter as I stared him do

Reese The older bear shifter didn’t respond at first, but I persisted in leveling my gaze at him, reminding him with my eyes of the discussion we’d had before lunch while my other half was running late. I’d made time to phone Theo between tasks earlier this morning in spite of my hectic schedule. I was relieved when he agreed to reach out to Logan in the near future, but I also remembered the advice he’d given me before the line went dead. Scarlett and I had been tiptoeing around her father’s feelings, scared to send him back into a downward spiral, but my mate’s brief report through mind link after her visit with him prior had informed me her father had already descended into the pit of depression once more. Consequently, I knew I had little to lose when I opted to seek him out. My no bullshit approach seemed to have pulled him out of the hole, at least temporarily, but with his awareness came anger. I observed the fur

  • Mated to the Alpha of the West   Epilogue

Scarlett About Two Weeks Later… It took a while for everyone to figure out where they wanted to settle once it had finally began to set in that the war was truly over. Of course, I remained in the Western Province with my true mate, but there had been a lot of reshuffling so far, and I was expecting even more in the coming weeks. Travel had been restricted before, but everything was entirely different since Hunter’s and Clarissa’s deaths, and since the disturbing truth about my former friend’s actions had been unveiled. I still couldn’t believe I had never known how warped they were on the inside, but any sadness I may have felt from their passing vanished when I thought about the number of deaths that they were collectively responsible for over the years. Needless to say, I hadn’t seen a shred of the children I’d befriended so long ago since either one of the bears had reentered my life, not that I ha

Reese It took every ounce of my self-control to remained fixed in place when the earsplitting roar rent the air, but Scarlett hadn’t informed me she was in trouble, so I clawed at the rocky earth beneath my paws until the time was right. I had a clear vision of the field from where I was positioned, my wolf’s superior vision helping in this respect, and I’d ordered my warriors forward the second my mate faltered with the outpouring of bear shifters into the open area, elated the bears had walked right into our trap. I saw Clarissa prowl in the direction of my true mate as our males defended our land. Concern for Scarlett arose to the forefront of my mind, but my eyes alit upon the massive, scarred beast setting his sights on my other half in the next instant. I was aware Rias and his males would arrive at any minute, and I wasn’t losing my one opportunity to repay some of the damage Hunter had inflicted over the years before t

Scarlett I was lost to the world after I’d crashed for the night, not even noticing when Reese slithered into the bed beside me, but I did register his abrupt movement as he shot out of bed sometime later. The incessant ringing emanating from the blackness around where I believed the night table was on the other side of the bed indicated what had awoken me from my slumber. Moreover, my mate hurriedly silenced the noise, answering the phone before it completed another loop of the tune he’d set. The resulting harried conversation I overheard told me everything I needed to know, and I began steeling myself for the conflict barreling straight for us, knowing I would never have to deal with my ex again after tonight if I could pull myself together long enough to fulfill my role in everything. My mate confirmed what I already knew a moment later as he hung up the phone, announcing in a matter-of-fact tone, “Hunter is leading his males throu

Scarlett The next day and a half seemed to drag by, but it wasn’t for a lack of things to do, that was for damn sure. Reese had been so busy making certain our ducks were all in a row before the bears invaded that we’d hardly had any time for each other. It didn’t help the rogues had begun their guerilla warfare in earnest once more, but I had a feeling my true mate was on to something prior when he’d said their sporadic attacks were a distraction method. My mate and I announced the threat heading our way to our pack members and guests, instructing them of their part in the whole scheme of things, though it mostly boiled down to the visitors staying within the town limits while our warriors helped secure the province. A few of the male members of the Ursidae species who had been keeping watch over the female werebears and their children during the turmoil in the bears’ land expressed their desire to help fend off Hunter’s incursion.

Reese Another damn group of rogues were trying to breach our borders again this evening. They didn’t make it far before I’d caught the faint smell of lady palm, but their attempt didn’t piss me off any less, irrespective. I thanked Luna and Kyle both that I had received the serum when Scarlett and I returned from our mission a couple of days ago as I took off after the trespassers who didn’t know we had the capability of detecting them. My wolf’s claws slashed through the dirt as I raced onward, forgetting about the nippy bite to the air as adrenaline rushed in, and I centered all my concentration on finding the menace lurking in my province. I ran into a few of my pack members who were out monitoring the borders during my pursuit, and the rogues were promptly taken care of with the assistance my warriors provided, afterward. There was nothing out of the ordinary as I finished the last portion of my circuit on patrol, so my wo

Reese Ronnie gave me a subtle thumbs up as she entered the dining room with my mate trailing behind her. Resulting, I breathed a sigh of relief, getting up to embrace Scarlett before she could take her seat next to me. I wasn’t proud to admit it, but I had snuck into the kitchen while she was showering this morning to ask the other she-wolf for a favor before I’d hunted down Ryker. Kyle had earned my trust, but that didn’t change the fact that my other half continued to be exhausted, and I had recently noticed other small things off about her too. I wasn’t sure if it was caused by side effects from the serum or something else entirely, but I was pleased Ronnie had agreed to discreetly check it out, nonetheless. Ronnie’s sign of encouragement allowed me to relax my stiff posture, but a hint of my unease remained after consulting Scarlett and I’s mating bond. The two she-wolves were the last to arrive, and the food was a

Scarlett I stirred in my sleep, something pulling at my consciousness, but the heavy weight of my mate’s arm snug around me and his pine and cinnamon fragrance combatted with whatever it was. Relaxing back into my bliss, I forgot about the momentary intrusion altogether. That was, until the same annoying sound repeated, but this time, it was much closer. The knocking recurred yet again from outside my bedroom door, making it impossible to ignore. Thump, thump, thump! I groaned, already lamenting my morning lost in bed with my true mate, so my mood was surly when I threw the door open a minute later. In any event, my irritated words died on my lips when I saw Ronnie on the other side of the door, and I greeted her with a hug while I heard Reese moving around in the room behind me. “Hey Scar, I figured I’d return the favor.” She smirked, giving me a cheeky grin before she continued, “I was knocking on the front

Scarlett Reese was striding up to my side as soon as we arrived at the training grounds, blanketing me in his embrace once he was within touching distance, so he heard the tail end of my uncle’s statement. “We’ll work it out kid. You’ve got enough on your plate to worry about for now, and we’re grown adults. You’ve done enough already.” Rowan said kindly, patting me on the back before he set off to join the other males who were already warming up. I remained silent, pondering everything I’d learned today. My uncle’s words were slowly sinking into my psyche, but my mate’s deep voice intruded before long. “Are you all right, sweetheart?” He inquired, disregarding the various people who were waiting on us as he squeezed me tighter into his strong chest like we had all the time in the world. I glanced up to meet his stunning silver orbs, answering, “Yeah, it’s just Logan and Rowan working through their issues.
