His jaw tightened, but he didn’t respond. The flicker of anger in his eyes was all the confirmation she needed.

“Fidel’s my boyfriend,” she said casually, leaning back against the wall and crossing her arms.

The reaction was instant. Lucas’s entire body tensed, his fists clenching at his sides. His wolf growled audibly, the sound echoing in the small room.

---

“Your boyfriend,” Lucas repeated, his voice low and dangerous. “Funny, considering he works for me.”

Lila raised an eyebrow, feigning surprise. “Does he? He must not think much of you if he’s willing to cross that line.”

Lucas took another step toward her, his movements slow and deliberate. “Don’t test me, Lila,” he warned, his voice a growl.

She held her ground, refusing to let him see her nerves. “What are you going to do, Lucas? Fire him? Threaten him?”

His eyes bore into hers, the fury simmering just beneath the surface. “If he lays another hand on you, I’ll do more than that.”

---

Lila’s wolf purred at the possessiveness in his tone, but Lila pushed the feeling aside.

“You don’t get to decide who I’m with,” she said firmly.

“I’m your mate,” Lucas said, his voice filled with conviction. “That gives me every right.”

She laughed bitterly. “You think being my mate gives you ownership? Newsflash, Lucas—it doesn’t.”

He exhaled sharply, his frustration evident. “I’m not trying to own you, Lila. I’m trying to protect you.”

“From what?” she demanded. “From Fidel? From myself? Or is this just about your ego?”

---

Lucas stepped back slightly, his expression softening for the first time. “It’s not about ego,” he said quietly. “It’s about you. About us.”

Lila’s heart clenched at the vulnerability in his voice, but she quickly steeled herself.

“There is no us,” she said again, her voice firm. “And there never will be.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and final.

Lucas’s gaze darkened, but he didn’t argue. Instead, he nodded slowly, his jaw tightening as if he were trying to hold something back.

“Fine,” he said finally, his voice low and steady. “If that’s how you feel, then I won’t force you.”

---

Relief washed over Lila, but it was short-lived.

“But don’t think for a second that I’m giving up,” Lucas added, his eyes burning with determination. “This bond is real, whether you want to admit it or not. And I’ll prove it to you.”

Lila opened her mouth to respond, but no words came. Before she could gather her thoughts, Lucas turned and walked toward the door.

He paused just before leaving, glancing back at her. “This isn’t over, Lila.”

And then he was gone, leaving her alone in the room, her emotions in turmoil and her wolf silently cheering.

________________

Lucas had barely taken a step out of the room before Lila called after him, her voice sharper than she intended. “You don’t get to walk away, not when I’m the one you’re interrogating.”

He froze mid-step, his back rigid. Slowly, he turned, his eyes narrowing as they locked onto hers. “What now, Lila?” he asked, his voice edged with a dangerous calm.

She crossed her arms, feigning nonchalance despite the storm brewing inside her. “If you’re so determined to play the protective mate, maybe you should know something first.”

Lucas tilted his head, his gaze scrutinizing. “I’m listening.”

A spark of mischief flickered in her eyes. If he wants to act like he owns me, let’s see how far I can push him.

“Fidel’s going to propose tonight,” she said, her voice dripping with mock sincerity.

---

The air between them seemed to crackle. Lucas’s expression remained stoic for a moment, but the subtle tightening of his jaw betrayed him.

“Propose?” he repeated, his voice eerily calm.

Lila nodded, her lips curling into a sweet smile. “That’s right. We’ve been planning our future for a while now, and tonight’s the night.”

His wolf growled audibly, the sound low and menacing. Lucas took a step closer, his towering presence suddenly suffocating.

“You expect me to believe that?” he asked, his tone low but deadly.

She shrugged, tilting her head in mock curiosity. “Why wouldn’t you? Fidel and I have been close Moreover You’ve seen us together.”

---

Lucas’s fists clenched at his sides, and his eyes burned with something primal. “If that’s true,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper, “then he’s a fool for thinking he can claim what’s mine.”

Lila’s heart skipped a beat, but she kept her composure, her tone icy. “I’m not yours, Lucas. I’ve made that perfectly clear.”

“Then why are you lying?” he shot back, his voice sharp.

Her confidence faltered for just a moment before she recovered. “You’re delusional,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Why would I lie about something like this?”

---

Lucas stepped even closer, invading her space until she had to tilt her head back to meet his gaze. “Because you want to push me away,” he said, his voice soft but cutting. “You think throwing Fidel in my face will make me back off. But it won’t.”

Lila’s breath hitched, her wolf stirring restlessly under the weight of his presence. She hated how he could see right through her, how he made her feel exposed and vulnerable.

“Believe what you want,” she said, her voice wavering slightly. “But tonight, Fidel’s going to put a ring on my finger, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

---

Lucas’s eyes darkened, his wolf’s growl vibrating in the room. “You’re playing a dangerous game, Lila,” he said, his tone a warning.

“Am I?” she shot back, her defiance flaring. “Or are you just mad that you’re not in control for once?”

His silence was more telling than any response he could have given. For a moment, they simply stared at each other, the tension between them thick and suffocating.

Finally, Lucas exhaled sharply, his composure returning. “If he does propose,” he said, his voice cold, “I hope you’re prepared for the consequences.”

---

Lila raised an eyebrow, masking her unease with sarcasm. “Consequences? What are you going to do, Lucas? Crash the proposal?”

He leaned in close, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “You’ll find out.”

Her wolf thrilled at the intensity in his gaze, but Lila forced herself to stand firm. “I’m not scared of you,” she said, though her voice betrayed a hint of uncertainty.

Lucas smirked, a dangerous edge to his expression. “You should be.”

With that, he turned and left the room, leaving Lila standing there, her emotions a whirlwind of defiance, frustration, and something she refused to name.

---

As the door closed behind him, her wolf practically purred. “He’s not giving up. He’ll fight for us.”

Lila groaned, pressing her palms to her temples. “This isn’t a fairytale,” she muttered.

But even as she said the words, a part of her couldn’t help but wonder what Lucas would do next—and whether she was truly ready to face the storm she had just unleashed.

Jake POV The night air was thick with tension, a strange hum of unease I couldn’t shake. I prowled the edges of the city, my wolf restless beneath my skin. Something was off, though I couldn’t pinpoint what. The usual sounds of the bustling nightlife seemed muted, as if the city itself was holding its breath. “Dammit,” I muttered under my breath, my frustration mounting as my search yielded nothing useful. I’d spent hours trying to dig up anything on Riley—the elusive rogue who had been a thorn in our side for weeks—but the trail was colder than I’d anticipated. Jake POVThe faint click of the study door closing behind me did little to dispel the weight of the conversation I’d just had with Lucas. My brother, the unflinching Alpha who rarely let anything slip past his control, was now thrown into turmoil over a woman—his mate. The bond was relentless, and its power was clear in every strained line of his face. Yet, as much as I wanted to help him, the unease gnawing at my gut wouldn’t relent. Something about all of this felt… wrong. --- By the time I reached my own suite, my mind was racing. Lucas had shown me just enough of his hand to spark questions he probably didn’t want me asking. This woman—Lila—was clearly no ordinary mate. She had Lucas, of all people, tied in knots. And from what little I’d gleaned, she wasn’t exactly forthcoming with her own story. Lila POV Taking a deep breath, I stepped into the ancient, crumbling temple ruins, my senses on high alert. The sun was dipping lower, casting shadows as darkness slowly crept in. As I listened carefully and sniffed the air, I could tell I was the only one here in this secluded part of the forest. The timing couldn’t have been better.I treaded softly over the scattered debris, carefully placing each step. I moved through the ruins until I reached the heart of the old temple, where two towering pillars stood, untouched by time. Most of the temple had fallen and been worn down by years of neglect, but these pillars remained steady. If I had arrived at sunrise, I would have seen the sun peeking through them from the east—a sight I planned to enjoy some other time.Despite the ruins’ decay, the carvings on the pillars were astonishingly clear, making me wonder about the materials that kept them intact. But tonight, my mind was elsewhere, focused on a much greater purpose.Standing betwe

Lucas POV I glared at the screen, skimming over the email from my cyber team. It had happened again – someone had breached our systems and messed up everything. My jaw tightened as I read through the detailed report. This wasn’t the first time; it had become an ongoing problem. No matter how many defenses we set up, someone kept breaking through, testing my patience to its limit. Our list of suspects had three names. I was determined to hunt down each one, ensuring they would regret ever crossing me. They’d face the most excruciating end, begging for a quick release, which I would never give them.I was pulled from my fury when my phone rang. I answered with a scowl.“Cross Jeremy off the list,” my brother Jake said right away. Leaning back in my chair, I raised an eyebrow.“You took care of him?” I asked, intrigued. Jeremy had been one of our main suspects.“No, he did that himself,” Jake replied, sounding amused. I wasn’t in the mood for jokes. “Before he went, he gave us a clue.”

Jake POV It took us quite a while to wrap things up at Jeremy’s place. We uncovered loads of hard drives filled with data, which we’ll hand over to Blake, our cyber team leader, to examine for more information on Riley. I also found some notes Jeremy had written about Riley’s previous actions. I made sure to keep those, too.By the time we finally left, night had fallen. A whole day had passed on this task, which frustrated me because I had other plans for the day, but raiding Jeremy’s home took priority. Even so, we’d gained an advantage – we had fresh leads. We’d discovered Riley was a female wolf, living somewhere along the southern coast. Interesting. Out of all possibilities, it turned out she was a she-wolf. Who would have guessed? This new detail made things a bit trickier. Usually, we knew our enemies, most of whom were men. A few female wolves made our list too, but none had the courage to do what Riley had done. She was different. I could tell my brother felt the same curio

The next day was another day like the previous day, having fun out with Fidel.“Is this really the best use of our time?” Lila muttered to herself, her fingers absently tracing the rim of her coffee cup as she sat across from Fidel at the café.“You’re wasting energy on trivialities,” her wolf growled, its voice distant and strained, as though speaking through layers of static.“What’s your problem?” Lila hissed back under her breath, her frustration mounting.“You’re not listening,” her wolf snapped. “Something’s wrong.”“You’ve been saying that all morning,” Lila replied sharply. “Care to be more specific?”Silence.Lila sighed, gripping her cup tightly.
