Rayne's POVEven looking outside now took a lot of energy and boldness. Two days went past, and we were still unable to find a solution to the problem at hand. Savannah was still out there, and the violence between humans and werewolves kept getting stronger every minute. It had gotten to the point where people had started to protest against werewolves, carrying about big signs with ‘Down with the beasts’ written on them. It was difficult to watch, even on the news. Whenever the newscaster showed his face, he always looked like it took him all the energy in the world to even sit down and speak. I could imagine the mental stress it took to literally be a bearer of bad news, measuring the numbers of the unsatisfied citizens on the street, getting injured for the cause they held dear.Frustrated, I finally turned off the television and threw the remote to a far corner of the room. Kaiden looked at me with an eyebrow raised, but said nothing.“If they only knew the mistake they're making
Rayne's POVThe raid was today. The day that we had been waiting for had finally come. Kaiden had already sent out notices to families in the city to take their loved ones away before it was too late. Many obeyed, leaving during the night or at day, although they had to leave in batches, or it would be too suspicious that people were moving out of the city all at once.On the most recent call I had with Sal, she said that Mysticrock was swamped with new faces that she hadn't seen in a long time, and that they were trying to find suitable accommodation for some families.Kaiden wanted me to leave as well, but I refused. This had become my fight as a Luna, and I wasn't going to run with my tail between my legs. War had come to us, and we had to do everything we could to fight it.We had been delayed for a while, waiting for any news we could get on Savannah’s whereabouts. Some reports stated that she had been seen in different locations, but whenever we went to search, she was nowhere
Rayne's POV“I can't seriously believe you talked me into this,” Jacob said on the drive down to the city main square. His stiff fingers on the steering wheel fully communicated his disdain for being in this situation. It didn't take much to convince him to take me to where Kaiden was going. All I had to do was threaten him that I would simply leave without him, and then he would have a lot to explain to Kaiden later. Or, he could simply help me get to Kaiden. Either way, he would be protecting me as he should have. The sidewalks were crowded with protesters, many who decided that the best place to air their grievances was by stepping on the road and blocking the advancement of cars. Jacob was a skillful driver, and managed to slip past many of the checkpoints without drawing too much attention, but the closer we got to the main square, the thicker the crowds got. It soon became obvious that reaching there by car wouldn't be possible. So once we reached a certain point, I suggested
Rayne's POVKaiden . . .The worst thing that could have happened, happened. All I could do was watch as he disappeared behind those wooden doors, into a building that was completely shielded by gun-wielding AA agents.I tried to go after him, but Jacob wouldn't let me. His fingers were firm against my skin, giving me no room to escape. “Rayne, be rational,” he said calmly. “If you rush down there, you're definitely going to be discovered.”“But we can't just leave Kaiden to those people. Who knows what they're going to do with him?” My panic was rising higher and higher like waves of an ocean. Soon it would sweep away every other rational thought. My wolf begged to be freed to retrieve her mate, but I held her down . . . for now.“Rayne, I'm sure even you understand that going now isn't wise. You can't help him if you're also captured.”Jacob was right, but I wasn't ready to listen yet. “Kaiden,” I whispered, somehow hoping that he would know that I was near, even if it was probabl
Kaiden's POVGetting captured was the only way to set his plan in motion. He only hoped that things would go as planned. One of the AA agents pressed his gun into Kaiden's back and shoved him forward. “Move faster.”If he wanted to, he could have ripped the unfortunate agent in half already, but he could always do that later. For now, he simply had to watch and wait for Savannah to turn up. Even if there was a chance that she wouldn't, he had to believe that for all the years he'd known her, something about her was actually true. In fact, maybe her obsession with him was the only thing that she had been honest about. He continued walking forward down the hall, paying attention to every route taken in case he needed to follow the way out. The agents probably thought he wasn't going to make it back out and so weren't bothered about keeping him unaware of the location. He could smell wolfsbane nearby, and it nauseated him. Even without making contact with the plant, he had now develope
Rayne's POVMy wolf started to get antsy as we waited after the roar that nearly shook the foundation of the earth. Jacob and I waited and waited for so long that it became painful to remain pressed against the wall, seeking for an opportunity to present itself.Until finally . . . The AA agents stationed outside appeared to get a directory. They shouted orders to themselves, and then rushed into the building one after the other. I counted just about four agents running into the building like there was some kind of fire inside. Their black gear sucked in all the light and made them resemble light-eating shadows.Jacob gave a signal with his two first fingers, and I went around over the corner of the building until I reached the large set of doors. “I don't know about this place, but I do know that this place is crawling with AA agents. Anything can happen once we get inside, so you must be careful,” he said to me carefully. I almost mentioned that he was talking to me like I was a ch
Kaiden's POVA pounding started in my head the moment I came to consciousness. Throbbing and pulsating, the veins around my skull started to sing a song of ache and sorrow. Once again, I had been fooled. I had been blind. I had dropped down my guard and allowed the enemy to gain the upper hand.I couldn't dwell on the negatives for now. All that mattered was defeating Savannah, getting out of this building, and reuniting with the light of my life—my Luna. Rayne.Thinking about her brought a certain sadness to my heart. It had come so suddenly without warning, and I couldn't get rid of it. I couldn't deny the heaviness that it brought to me, but I also couldn't understand why.Warm breath fanned my nose. A door creaked somewhere. My eyes finally agreed to open. Savannah sat before me on her wooden desk. Her nose nearly brushed mine, but something else had caught her attention, and she frowned as her eyes watched whatever it was.I smacked my tongue twice, trying to get used to the fe
Kaiden's POVJacob staggered back, unsteady on his feet. His groan of pain bounced across the room, high-pitched and pitiful. Blood dripped down his face from the deep gashes across his cheek. Just like I had predicted, his humanity got in the way, and slowed him down. He pressed his hand to the large wound on his face, slowly backing away from a triumphant advancing Savannah. She was so focused on her prey that she failed to notice that I had made my escape. Jacob's face held no fear—or maybe it was all the blood that made him look like that. The gashes went from one side of his head down to his cheek—dangerously close to his mouth. If Savannah had been more accurate, or he hadn't pulled away fast enough, his mouth would have been ripped open as well.He tried to dodge once more, veering sharply to the left, but Savannah already tracked his movements, and grabbed his throat. With power that only belonged to our kind, she lifted him off the ground and into the air, despite his resi
