The next day, I called Pax and Hunter back to my office. My hand shook as I reached for another cigarette, my fifth one of the day. A tumbler of whiskey sat on my desk, half-empty. “Are you certain?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. They both nodded, fear evident in their eyes. “We checked everything,” Pax said, his voice shaking slightly. “There was no movement around any of the hatches and we haven’t found anything on the CCTV footage near them either or in the tunnels.” I let out a heavy sigh and knocked back the rest of my whiskey, then picked up the bottle and took a long drink straight from it.

“Fuck! She can doctor the footage. Did you double-check the footage for any discrepancies?” I ask as Hunter nods. The dark circles under his eyes tell me he hasn’t slept. Guilt fills me.
