“Their eyes, they are spellbound!” Saffron growls through our mind-link as he sinks his teeth into the large wolf he continues to battle.
I take two cautious steps back as two of the four wolves begin to circle me, snarling and baring their teeth.
The sound rattles the bones of the human nurses running to their cars with their eyes wide and full of unadulterated fear.
“If you value your life, I suggest you leave… now,” I growl viciously, widening my stance as I focus on my sense of hearing.
Abruptly, but predicted, both wolves lunge at me from either side and I push off the ground, running to the tree that is straight ahead of me.
I run up the thick trunk and execute a backflip. The first wolf crashes into the trunk head-on, and the second wolf releases a vicious howl that almost has a hidden message in it.
I shift into my wolf as I notice the eyes of the wolf that is preparing to charge at me has a deep hue of purple lining them.
These wolves are spellbound, and it’s as if the powerful witch has cast a spell upon them, bending them to her will, like mere puppets on a string.
The big question: Where is this witch?
In a fierce encounter, the wolf and I rush toward each other, grappling and clawing in an attempt to evade each other's razor-sharp fangs.
Suddenly, the wolf slashes my ear with his sharp claws catching me off guard.
My reflexes take over and I viciously sink my teeth into the wolf's unguarded shoulder with little regard for the pain searing across my ear.
With a piercing howl, he attempts to dislodge me while I hold on tightly, refusing to let go.
As soon as I pull my teeth out of his shoulder, I skid backward on all fours and bump into the wolf that had crashed into the tree.
Rising unsteadily, the spellbound wolf bares its teeth and snarls, urging its pack member to deliver the final blow.
The second wolf fumbles to his paws, his ears flat on his head, smearing blood across his brown fur coat.
Standing on my back paws, I bark at the second wolf, “What makes you think you can defeat me?” I snap, launching myself at the brown werewolf.
The wolf leaps over me and snags my tail. I yelp as the wolf jerks his head backward and throws me into a parked car, cracking my ribs.
With a heavy thud, I collapse onto the ground, gasping for air and grimacing at my futile attempts to stand up.
The wolf ambles towards me with a sly grin on his face.
In a matter of moments, he looms above me, his features radiating with a sense of victory.
“Turns out it isn’t so hard to defeat you after all, and I’m just getting started,” The wolf growls in a cocky tone that rubs me the wrong way.
With all my might, I strive to heal my wounds and rise, surrendering to the overwhelming fury that consumes me.
As I ponder my next move, a fierce howl pierces the silence, causing Saffron and me to writhe in agony as we shift back into our human form.
“You were not our target, you filthy mutt.” The wolf circles me, laughing. “Your Alpha is dead!”
“No…” I roar, breaking past the compulsion of misery and death that paralyzes me. “You may have killed my Alpha as he lay helpless on the operating table, but you will not kill me without a fight!” I slowly rise to my feet as the power of an Alpha seeps into my soul and pulses through my hungry veins.
Glancing at the car window I was hurled into, I notice that my fresh pair of bright crimson eyes are shining in the dimness.
The large brown wolf slowly starts to retreat with his head slightly bowed, and before he pivots to make a clean getaway, “SHIFT…” I command in my Alpha voice.
Almost instantly, the wolf begins to shift, his bones clicking loudly through the still night as he whimpers in agony.
I have heard stories of how gruelling the pain is for a shifter who has been forced to shift back into their human form by an Alpha.
And watching it unfold before me causes me to shudder.
I turn my head and look at Saffron, who savagely sweeps his tongue across his protruding canines. “Go and find the mutt that has just turned my sisters’ world upside down and left my nephews fatherless.” I snarl in a homicidal tone. “Deal with him accordingly.”
Saffron nods his head, slowly walks up to the brown wolf who is now lying on the cold ground in a fetal position in his human form, and bares his teeth at him.
His teeth snap at the shifter, and I can sense Saffron slowly losing control.
“He’s mine, Saffron,” I growl, slowly approaching the shifter, and I activate my Serpent shield.
Dragging the trembling shifter to his feet as he begs and cries for mercy, I force his head to the side and sink my teeth into the crook of his neck, contaminating his blood with enough venom to paralyze him.
I pull back when his body falls to the ground like a sack of potatoes, “I’m not going to take pleasure in killing you,” dragging his body to a nearby tree, I lean him against the thick trunk and release a shuddering breath. “I’m going to give Lily the honours in dealing with you. But first, there is someone I need to visit, and you’re not invited, so don’t go anywhere.”
With the amount of venom I have just released into his bloodstream and the amount of time it takes for his wolf healing abilities to kick in… he should be paralyzed for a good six hours.
Rolling my shoulders back, I stalk towards the hospital to where my brother-in-law’s body rests; my sisters’ mate and the father to my nephews.
I need to bring his body home with us and make things right. My sister has believed for many years that Azra has abandoned her on many occasions to seek his fated mate, but that is not the case.
All this time, Azra has been hunting down the Moon witch single-handedly, trying to restore our pack to its prime with female pups gracing our presence.
People rush past me as I walk into the building butt naked, both humans and shifters all fighting to make an escape unscathed.
Entering the vacant waiting room, I make my way to the room where I left Azra to rest and try to heal the wounds Luna failed to, as she was unconsciously healing some of them while she brushed her fingertips over his feverish flesh.
Bursting through the doors as the smell of blood and death engulfs me, I come to a sudden halt with my gaze trained on Azras’ stiff and cold body.
Blood. There is some much blood covering the once-pristine walls and floor.
“Th.they… they ripped his heart out right in front of me.” A soft voice stutters, and I snap my head to the side to find Jayme huddled in the corner of the room.
I rush to her aid, crouching in front of her, and I place my hands on the balls of her shoulders to check if she has been hurt. “Are you injured? Did they touch you?” I mutter, cupping her face in my hands as she squeezes her eyes shut.
Jayme shakes her head, blindly pointing at Azra, “They left a message for your pack on his chest.” She whispers.
I rise to my feet and approach the operating table with the sensation of loss and wrath consuming me.
My eyes scan Azras’ body and a fierce growl emits through the room.
The words:
WE WANT THE HEART OF THE MOON-KISSED WITCH, OR WE WILL KEEP COLLECTING THE HEARTS OF AN ALPHA.
Have been carved into Azras’ chest. I begin to back away from the table as the letters float around his chest and eventually disappear into his skin.
As I race down the winding road, my heart pounds in the nest of my chest, and I can feel the wolf's eyes boring into me from behind. Its presence is palpable, a dark force that seems to be drawing closer with each passing moment. I grasp the steering wheel in a death grip, my knuckles turning white as I try to keep my focus on the treacherous path ahead. But no matter how hard I try, I can’t shake the feeling that the wolf is gaining on me, its breath hot on my neck. I know that I must keep moving, to keep driving forward no matter what, or risk being consumed by the terror that is closing in around me. “What the fuck is going on!” I scream out loud, gripping the steering wheel tightly as the car starts to swerve at the speed it is going. “Just leave me alone! I help your kind, damn you…” On the verge of tears, I suddenly wish I had listened to my mother and applied at the hospital that was solely for humans. Me being defiant and trying to prove to my mother that I’m in control
“Your daughter is ours. We will own her. Mark her and if she runs, we will chase her down and punish her. Is that clear enough for you, witch? She will bear the first female pup that will break the curse in our pack and end with your demise.” The words leave my mouth on their own accord as I continue to pin my mates’ mother, our enemy, to the wall.My heart races with adrenaline as I glare at the witch. Suspended mid-air, her feet dangle as if she's a puppet on strings. Her eyes, piercing and bright, seem to bore into my very soul as if she's trying to extract it from within me. I can see the desperation in her gaze as she struggles to draw in enough air to fill her starving lungs. My wolf prowls in the dark, growling fiercely as he bares his canines, eager to sink them into the witch’s neck. “Let me out, so I can tear her limb from limb…” He snarls savagely.Almost tempted to grant him his wish, I stop when the darkness around us seems to thicken as if it's alive and feeding off t
As soon as I feel Saffrons' absence, I trail behind Luna and follow her into the kitchen. She stands on her tiptoes and reaches up to open the top cupboard. Her fingers fumble around until they find the smooth surface of a tall glass. Carefully, she pulls it down, cradling it in her hands as she turns to the sink. The cool water rushes out of the faucet and into the glass, filling it halfway. She bustles around the kitchen and I can't help but watch her every move. Leaning against the fridge, I fold my arms across my bare chest and take in the sight of her. Her movements are graceful, yet purposeful.Abruptly, she spins on her heel with a sudden jolt of fear shooting through her body when her gaze lands on me. The glass of water in her hand slips from her grasp, descending toward the floor. Without hesitation, I jump forward and reach her just in time, lifting her into my arms before the glass hits the ground. When the glass collides with the ground, it shatters, and water with
As Blaze relinquishes his grip on my wrist, I hasten towards my mother, bending over her delicate frame to place a tender kiss on her forehead.A rebel tear slides down my cheek and splashes across her porcelain skin.“I’m sorry, ma, but I have to go with them. If I don’t, I’m afraid they will do something crazy, like kill you, and then me. I love you, and I wish you had been honest with me from the start because I have no idea what’s real and what’s not.” I whisper, wiping her hair out of her face as I look down at her and take a mental snap of her sleeping form. “I love you…” I sob, as I turn away from her.“Don’t allow them into your heart, my child. The second you do, it will all be over.”I look down at my hand as my mother holds on to it in a death grip that surprises the hell out of me, preventing me from walking away from her.“Wh…what?” I breathe out, lifting my gaze to search her face.“Lock your heart up and throw the key away, child. You are the descendant of a powerful Mo
As we drive through the woods, entering the clearing to our pack land, the sun is beginning to descend, casting bright hues to stain the horizon. We have been driving for hours, only making a pit stop here and there to get food or take a toilet break. Glimpsing in the rearview mirror, I cast a quick peek at Luna before I return my gaze to the front. She looks so peaceful, and angelic looking as she continues to sleep. The gentle cadence of her breath, punctuated by the occasional murmur, spurs me on to remain vigilant - to get her as far away from her mother as quickly as I can. She may not see it; I know Saffron sure as hell doesn’t, but she is our future. She is going to save our pack, and together we will break the curse bestowed upon us all. Just by Luna coming here of her own will, shows me that she is nothing like her evil mother. She has sacrificed everything to save our pack line, knowing that she will forever belong to us and that the life she once had, no longer
I jump out of the Ute, the door slamming shut behind me with a resounding thud. My fingers drum irritably against the bottom of my packet of cigarettes, a familiar ritual that always calms my nerves. And right now, my nerves feel like they are shot with restlessness.I whack the bottom of my packet against the palm of my hand while I look out into the crowd that continues to form around Blaze. He's taken it upon himself to courageously explain everything that has taken place in our absence.Like, the death of our Alpha. The finding of our mate, with the shocking discovery that she is our enemy and somehow, destined to be our saving grace. All rolled up into one curvacious being with a sharp tongue that stings like a silver whip, laced with spikes and wolfsbane. Not to mention that our mate's mother was the witch that damned us all to hell. How we fought spellbound wolves and still have one gagged and tied up in the cargo of the Ute for Lily to punish herself. Oh, and not forg
“Careful, darling,” Saffron hisses, gripping the roof of the Ute above my head. “I just might let you.”Licking my lips, I reel in my escaping breath as every fibre in my body hums. What the fuck was that?I have never felt pleasure that intensely before. As much as my mind wishes to royally screw Saffron over, my body craves to jump him and allow him to do whatever he pleases with me. Sexually. This is insane. I’ve known him for less than twenty-four hours, and I feel this magnetic pull towards him that has my heart racing fiercely in my ear canals. This pull toward him is a desperate need I can’t seem to control. It’s overwhelming, making me crave his touch.Straightening my spine, I press my forehead against his. “What was that?” I ask breathlessly, hating how close he is to me—reminding me of the pleasure that was currently surging through me.One corner of his mouth curls upward. “You like pain, darling, and I have a feeling that you and I are going to get along very well. I now
I do my best to keep my feet rooted in the ground. The expression on Lunas’ face is making my wolf inflamed. He is clawing at my chest, and I have to grit my teeth to hold him back. Because the moment I set him free. There is no telling what he may do to Lily. “Lily…” I snarl with a homicidal expression. “You have less than thirty seconds to remove yourself from our mate before we release our wolf onto you,” I warn her in a strained tone, feeling my veins pulse beneath the layers of skin on my body. “One more second, Blaze. I promise.” She whimpers. I know she can see everything that transpired at the hospital through Lunas' eyes, and part of me hopes she finds some solace through Lunas’ vision. “Please…” Luna sobs in a hushed tone that is filled with agony. “It hurts…” “Lily! Release her. Now!” I use my alpha voice, as I can feel the last ounce of control I have slipping through my fingers. A loud howl disperses across the clearing as it travels with the wind. Saffron has s
The harsh hammering of my heart galloping in the nest of my chest drowns out my surroundings. My ears begin to burn along with my cheeks. What have we done? What have I done?It never crossed my mind that my mother would be able to feel every sensation raking through my body as Saffron devoured me like I was his main course. An exasperated sigh departs my lips as I squeeze my thighs shut and wrap my arms around my chest to hide my pebbling nipples. I’ll admit, my pussy still feels sensitive and every time I steal a glance in Saffrons’ direction, guilt with an underlay of excitement washes over me. What transpired between us at the clearing that soon led us to the waterfall will always hold a place in my heart. His dark and handsome face was flushed, misty with sweat, his enthralling eyes glazed with sinister intentions as he spoke to me like I wasn’t his enemy – the entity of all his troubles. He made me feel less of a worthless piece of shit that my mother had suddenly sprung upon
The journey home has been surprisingly quiet. She's been quiet. She hasn’t breathed a word or muttered one under her breath. And occasionally, the deafening sound of silence isn’t as peaceful as some would describe. It's the perfect opening for your mind to overthink, and, in this case, it's my wolf. He’s unsettled, almost to the point of being unhinged. Prowling in the back of my mind, his canines are on full display as he openly shows me how displeased he is that I did not mark Luna as our own. “You useless son-of-a-bitch” He snarls on repeat like a broken record. All I can do is internally roll my eyes heavenward as I continue to ignore him. I can feel Lunas’ gaze on me when she casts me an odd glance here and there. She has questions, or possibly a long line of vulgar names she wishes to hurl at me for eating her delectable pussy out until she screamed my name like it was her new favourite anthem. I know it is for me. “Oh, oh my gods… don’t stop, please… don’t stop.”I coul
Sitting on the front step of the pack house, there is a distinct chill in the air that can't go unnoticed. It's thick with the stench of death that swirls in the air, low-key, having everyone walking on eggshells around each other, and I don’t blame them. Our future is filled with uncertainty, and it’s the unknown that plagues us all with fear. People tend to fear what they don’t understand, and fear is a good friend of hate and deception.I tilt my head back and peer at the moon, perched high in the inky sky, shining gloriously. The sight truly is breathtaking, and though I have seen this view every night of my existence, it still manages to hold me captive. But for some wild reason, it feels like forever since I have allowed myself to be lost in her beauty. Especially now with everything that has been happening lately.A niggling headache pulses across my skull and down my neck as my mind is currently in a jumbled mess as it ignores my wolf instincts. My wolf is thirsty for blood.
Saffron glides the flat surface of his tongue over my feverish flesh, making sure to run the tip of it over the warm blood trickling down the column of my neck. Sucking in a shallow breath, my eyelids flutter shut as I give into the explosive sensations taking over me. I shudder with delight. My knees unexpectedly buckle beneath me, and he grasps my left leg, hooking it over his hip to keep me close and upright. Saffron grazes his protruding canines against the crook of my neck with a low and fierce growl vibrating from the nest of his chest. The sensual kiss of our bodies grinding against one another becomes more glorious the longer it continues. It’s tantalising. Erotic. It’s sinfully poetic in a sense that I can’t begin to fathom. My arousal burns hotter with every hint of contact between us. His straining erection can’t be hidden, and the rock-hard length rubs insatiably against my clit. The slightest friction has stars dancing before my very eyes. His lips trail from my ne
“Fuucck…” I mutter, feeling myself falling face-first towards the ground.Closing my eyes, I wait for impact, and as it occurs, pain splinters across my forehead, my nose, mouth, and chin. I pull myself upright, taking in my surroundings as I search for Luna. One minute, she was standing in front of me, silently begging me to kiss her and the next… It’s like she vanished into thin air. My wolf growls darkly when we hear a faint laugh coming from our right. I slowly turn my head to find Luna at least fifty meters away from us with her hand over her mouth and her shoulders rising and falling. She’s laughing; she’s laughing at us.I grind my teeth together, glaring at her through narrowed eyes, and I push off my left foot, making a run for it in her direction. If there is one thing I despise most in people, it is being laughed at. Especially when it is to embarrass me. I fight my body for control, unwilling to let my wolf come out to play because only Goddess knows what he will do
“Step into the patch of moonlight, darling,” Saffron drawls gently as he raises his hand and gestures towards a spot for me to stand.Self-doubt wraps her icy fingers around my ankles, rendering me motionless. “I… I’ve changed my mind,” I say in a rush, meeting his challenging gaze. “Something doesn’t feel right – this doesn’t feel right.” I continue, waving my hand back and forth between us.“Nothing that has unfolded between us has or will ever feel right, darling. But we can't stand around, waiting to become prey for another pack, now can we?”Jesus, what was I thinking when I placed my hand in Saffrons’ open palm only moments ago?He has taken advantage of my vulnerability, using his heroism stunt to try to lure me into doing what he wants. How do I know this isn't a trap he has set up to look like an accident?“How do I know you aren't planning to kill me? For all I know, the moonlight can be the only source of weakness for me?”A bitter laugh dances between his lips. “The moonli
I find myself beside Lily, cradling her youngest pup snugly in a blanket, as an unearthly stillness envelops us. We linger by the river, where the moonlight casts a spiritual glow, revealing a mysterious path that dances across the water's surface. The pack hangs in the shadows, their heads lowered, emitting an offbeat whimper that hangs heavy in the air, thick with sorrow. As I stare at my youngest nephew, a lump forms in my throat as I begin to doubt myself. I have known for a long time that this day would come where Azra would sadly die, and I'd be the next alpha. But I could never have predicted that this day would come this soon and in the manner it has occurred.I'm not mentally prepared to lead my pack; I doubt I ever will be. Being a leader never tickled my fascination. I'm more of a team player. My greatest weakness are my nephews, and now that their father has passed, I must live up to their expectations and protect them from the evil that currently surrounds us.Death tain
I get behind the wheel, turning to the side to stare at Luna. She gazes straight ahead with her arms wrapped around her waist, and her bottom lip trembles, matching the visible tremble that rides her body. She’s in shock or trying to work through her trauma—possibly both. I don’t know. But what I do know is that witnessing her like this makes my pulse race. My fingers tighten around the steering wheel, turning my knuckles a ghastly shade of white. I bite down on my molars as I try to soothe the violence that has my wolf in a chokehold. He yearns to be set free with a raging desire to rip her evil, conniving mother's throat out. She hurt our mate. Mentally tormenting her to the point that drove Luna to physically hurt herself. For once, I am at a loss for words. I am so used to hiding behind my sarcasm and using that to mask the seriousness of a situation that doesn’t sit well with me. We need to get the hell out of here. Fuck that witch and fuck this damn place.I slam my foot
Unrelenting agony sears through the tips of my fingers as my nails fractured from my frantic attempts to claw my way through the door. My palms are sensitive to touch from all the hammering I've done against the door. Desperation lingers in the air as my cold and clammy flesh is covered in goosebumps. The misery and grueling sensation of me being pathetic drives me to bang my head against the door over and over and over again. The uneven surface claws at my forehead, and after what feels like an eternity, the warm trickle of blood paints my brow line to my cheeks. I release one more gut-wrenching scream, giving it my all. Even though it feels like razor blades slicing away at my throat, I don’t give up until I am out of breath. If I don’t die from sheer terror in here. I will die by the hands of another. The hands of the man my mother wishes to give me over to. Why? Why is she doing this to me?I am her daughter, her blood, and this is what she does to me. Her desire to ruin th
