Serena's POV

We sat in silence and I kept looking outside the window to avoid any form eye contact with him. I tried my best to look as formal as possible but I couldn't help but think that he was sitting in front of me, with very little space between us and there's no much a girl can hold on to.

I snapped out of those thoughts. Rachel and Alpha Zone said I should stay away from him or at least be as official as I can be with him.

"Why are you always looking out the window?" I asked.

"Pardon?" I asked like I wasn't listening to him. All a ploy to act like I'm uninterested in him.

"Why are you looking out the window?" He asked again.

"Looking out for rogues. We might never know when they'll plan to attack." I said firmly.

He barked out a loud and long laugh. "It's so funny how you have been beaten more times than I can count and you are acting all big and tough." He said.

"I apologise for not seeing your safety as a funny game." I said with my tone as dry as possible.

"Touche" he said.

Serena's POVAs soon as we got down from the carriages, Sylvia excitedly walked up to Arden and planted a long kiss on his lips. It's either she did it to spite me or she is truly deeply in love with him. I believe it's the former. She eyed me carefully, probably wondering why I was here and, most importantly, why I was in a guard's uniform."Serena, Zone, I want to personally congratulate you on your successful course in the academy." She said she was a saint.Alpha Zone and I simply bowed in response like we already practised how we'd respond to her."Shall we?" Arden asked."Not yet, my darling." She said, then walked to me. She held my hands like we had a previous rapport, and she would like to rekindle our friendship."I know I haven't always been nice to you, I am truly happy for your progress and success." She said, but I could feel everything she said was a lie. This was all a facade.I forced a smile. "Thank you for your kind words." I said as nicely as possible."When do you

Serena's POVI listened to Alpha Zone attentively as I am fed up with all Arden put me through and as for what he did tonight, I am getting fed up with and there is so much I can take even for a resilient person. So if he knows a way for me to leave this place for good, I will be more than willing to take my chances."You have the opportunity to get out. All you need to do is complete your three year tenure." He said.I sighed in frustration. "Three years. That's a lot of time.""But at least you're not a servant anymore."He made a fair point, but I was thinking I would be able to get out as soon as possible.I don't understand Arden. He prevented me from leaving when his mother granted me permission to leave. Now this? This is getting too frustrating."Crap! I am always this close," I walk up to him and hold my forefinger and thumb close with very little space in-between them. "This is close. But he ruins everything for me. It's getting so unbearable." I ranted."But there's a brigh

Serena's POVAfter what felt like hours, I finally heard the door click. I stood up from where I was sitting and stood upright. I waited for a while but no one came out of the room. This is the most impossible job ever.My feet hurt from standing for so long. I've endured training exercises that can be really exhausting but it's better than standing here and enduring the sounds of them while having to be uncomfortable all the while it happened.I heard footsteps in the room and low mumbles but I didn't know what exactly they were talking about and if I'm honest with myself, I'd rather if I didn't.I wish I had my phone with me. I would love to do something to keep me busy and also to know what time it is. But from the moonlight, I can tell it's somewhat around 3am.It's almost morning and I haven't gotten any shut eye. I guess this is one of the things I need to let go as long as I am going to be Arden's guard.I wondered if I should go to the training ground to meet with Alpha Zone b

Serena's POVAfter having just four hours of sleep, I was up again and ready for the day's work. I looked in the mirror as I got ready and I realized I had dark eye circles and my hair was a little unruly. I styled it in a messy bun because I didn't have enough time to properly style my hair.I went downstairs and I quickly had breakfast. I wanted to avoid some of the maids as much as possible but I couldn't because Emma was there."Good morning," I said to her."Good morning" she replied back.I went back to my food but I noticed she was looking at me. Her eyes ran along my body trying to take in me in my guard uniform and I could tell what she was thinking.I drank a glass of water like my life depended on it."Thank you so much for the food. It was delicious." I said to her and turned to leave."Thank you," she said. After a bout of silence she spoke again"Congratulations." She said faintly but her voice sounded sincere.I gave her a small smile and thanked her.I went outside and

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 56 THE CHANGES

Serena's POVStill filled with excitement from standing up to Sylvia, I ran into the palace to find Rachel. I could feel my insides bubbling with excitement. I haven't been this excited in a long while and I can't keep this excitement to myself. I need to tell her what happened.I entered her room and she already wore her pants but not her shirt."Um, a little privacy here." She said flatly."Oh please, we shared the same locker room." I said."Because we had no choice." She whined."If you really wanted privacy, you would lock your door." I said factually. She rolled her eyes. "What do you want? I thought you were guarding His Royal Majesty, King Arden." She said mockingly.I don't blame her. I have been pretty annoying with how much I do my job. If I were her, I'd mock myself too."Shush. I have something to tell you." I said in excitement. She stared at me for a while before snapping, "Well, what is it?""I talked back to Sylvia and put her in her place."She furrowed her brows. "I

Serena's POVI felt my breathing hitch and my palms becoming clammy. I didn't think he would be here. He didn't answer when I knocked. Oh, why didn't he answer?"Serena." He said sweetly.I took a deep breath then turned to him. He had a towel hanging from his waist with water droplets running down his chest and his hair still damp. He looked absolutely irresistible."I'm sorry, I thought the room was empty." I said."As you can see, it's not." He joked.I chuckled dryly. "Right. Well, I have to go." I turned to leave but he stopped me."Hey, hey, what's the rush?" He asked with his voice laced with amusement."I have something to take care of." I turned and replied."No you don't. I assign your tasks to you and unless you're helping Rachel or Zone, which they can very much handle on their own, you are free at the moment." He said.I swallowed the lump in my throat and smiled. Serena's POVI have felt pain before. In fact, I had learnt to deal and live with pain, but the greatest pain of all was watching my mate look at another woman like she was the one destined for him to be with.He seemed to have forgotten me and him wanting me because there was something that was better than me in front of him, and it was Princess Sylvia. He walked up to her and gave her a kiss, and I felt my chest burn even more. I wish I could get out of here. I wish I could disappear into thin air, but I can't. I have to stay and watch the entire thing from the sidelines.I watched as they mingled with the crowd. They were walking hand in hand, and I could hear Sylvia laughing at what someone said and Arden looking impressed. If I didn't know them, I'd think they were a perfect couple, but no one is perfect. After a while, Arden and Sylvia took to the stand for his speech. Serena's POVWhile Alpha Zone checked the security cameras for how this person came in and got out, Rachel was tending to my wounds. I have taken plenty of hits over the years so this isn't a big deal.Arden angrily paced in front of us while Sylvia looked scared to death. "Zone had one job." He started."To secure a perimeter with hundreds of people? Come on Arden, it would be impossible for him to have noticed that person go in." Rachel said."And if not for Serena, I would have been dead." He added.Rachel sighed loudly. "Don't be so dramatic. I would heal you and the hospital would have finished the job and you'd be as good as new." She said,"Rachel, this isn't a joke. Someone tried to kill Arden. They most likely are rogues or paid assassins." Sylvia said. Before Rachel would say anything, Alpha Zone walked in. "We couldn't get clear footage of the person unfortunately.""Crap! Authors PoVDraven had seen visions, omen and sights of another time and shadow of possible futures during the course of his life. But nothing could compare to this that shook his being. He sat up in his room, breath rasping out, with sweat dripping from his flesh. The room was in the dimness of dusk, redolent with old herbal incense from his previous ceremonies; however, the picture that danced across his mind initiated an involuntary shudder down his spine. Gilly. He had seen Gilly. She was supposed to be dead. For years now. And yet there she was in the vision, standing before him, her eyes swirling as if a bottomless abyss of great power and sorrow. Her lips moved-sounds came out, but he was unable to hear any. Then-Evelyn.It was no louder than a whisper but crystallised so clearly in his mind that sudden realisation crashed over him, a cold wave.Evelyn.Draven leaped up from where he was seated, flinging away the pieces of his

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 246 ODESSA’s DARK SECRET

Evelyn’s PoVThere was this fuzzy feeling in my brain, these spiders crawling down my spine, and I decided to ignore it.After our kiss, i began keeping tabs on him. Finian had been speaking to Odessa in hushed tones, his face was tense, his body rigid. I had thought it was about the pack, another manipulative tactic of hers, another ruthless order. But it kept happening.I had seen them together, talking discreetly, Odessa's sharp eyes glued on his as if she were assessing him for weakness. Finian never mentioned those chats, and when I asked him about them, he'd simply say Odessa was giving him a little instruction on strategy. The pieces fell into place only as I eavesdropped on them.As I headed toward the training pits, their voices floated through the air into my ears. I halted at the edge of Odessa's tent, standing half-hidden in the shadows."You are doing well," she was saying; "she trusts you now."I frowned. Th

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 245 FINIAN’s COMFORT

Evelyn PoVThe cold stone walls of my cell pressed in on me. The air was thick with dampness and a lingering scent of blood. My body ached from the last beating, bruises forming on ribs and arms, each a reminder of Odessa's power over me.I had lost track of time, but I knew it had been days since I last refused to follow her orders. Odessa wanted me to lead another raid-another senseless attack-but I held off, believing that perhaps after days of might, she would realise I would never be the killer she wanted me to be.But Odessa was patient. The cell door creaked open, and I barely raised my eyes at her entrance. Just the sight of her made my stomach turn."Well," she said in a smooth and deadly tone, "have you had enough by now?"I clamped my teeth, gazing stubbornly ahead. She crouched before me, cocking her head in a studied pose as if waiting for me to either submit or lash out."I know what you're thinking," she murmured. "That you could easily use your powers and kill me right

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 244 RACHEL’s ULTIMATUM

Authors PoVThe pack was tense, almost unbearably so. Each day dragged on, and the absence of Evelyn made gaping wounds that had been festering for years bleed again. The war had ended, but the scars still bled red.Sitting on the steps of his cottage, elbows resting on his knees, head bowed, Marcus had hardly spoken to anyone since Evelyn had left. Any conversation would end in an argument, each attempt to cheer him up reduced to silence. He was awake, barely eating. Existing was just about what he did. He was angry that Evelyn chose to leave, again but he missed her dearly. What could he do? Go against his promise? On the other hand, Luca stood at a distance, his arms crossed over his chest, looking frustrated. He had let Marcus have his grieving time, but watching him wallow in self-pity since Evelyn's choice to go? It just made his blood boil. Finally, Luca had had enough. He marched toward Marcus, boots crunching on the dirt underfoot. "Are you going to just sit here forever?"No

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 243 A NEW HOME?

Evelyn’s PoVI sat on a fallen log near the edge of the camp, staring into the fire. The campfire cast crackling light against the dark sky. Weeks had passed since I left my pack, weeks since the day I chose to follow Odessa; and somehow, I still wasn’t sure if I had done the right thing. At first, everything she stood for was against me. I refused to train like her rogues, refused to eat at the same fire as them, and refused to speak unless spoken to. But time has a strange way of softening things. The longer I stayed, the less they looked at me like I was an outsider. I had no idea if that was a good thing."You’re brooding again," Finian’s voice interrupted my thoughts.I glanced up just as he dropped down beside me, stretching out his long legs and leaning back onto his elbows. His dark hair was tousled from training, his knuckles bruised from sparring. He smirked at my silence."You do that a lot," he continued. "Sit here, staring at the fire, looking all deep like you are plotti

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 242 TRAINING GROUND

Authors PoVOdessa's rogues glided across the sandy training grounds like dark shadows; a performance rather different from that of the warriors of Evelyn's former pack. While the wolves in Evelyn’s pack did fight, these wolves lashed out madly, works of advantage under aggression and cunning. There was hardly any sense of honour to their battle; it was simply a matter of survival."You're hesitating," Odessa's voice cut in.As she turned, Evelyn found herself by Odessa, facing her gaze that cut straight into her heart. Odessa didn't seem impressed."You're never gonna be one of us," she said, "if you keep loafing about like a lost wolf. And if you're not with us, you're nothing."Evelyn swallowed her anger. Hadn't she agreed to this? Hadn't she chosen to come here to free her mother, to protect the pack she loved? But as she stood there, amidst rogues who greeted her with watchful eyes, she began to wonder whether she had been wise to chose this path."You want a place here? You figh

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 241 THE PACKS RESPONSE

Serena PoVI felt the pain, the first sensation of movement in my chest, going through me like a burning fire. Breathing was slow and laboured while being pressed down by something heavy. I could not focus. Something like a fog settled in my mind, and I could hardly move my limbs."She’s waking up," a soft voice, familiar, said from one side. Then my eyelids fluttered open, and now I caught the dim light of my room. Draven was standing next to me. I could see tiredness written all over his face. On my other side was Ardan, his countenance tensed up.I groaned and began to sit up; Draven gently pressed me back down. "Just take it easy. Poison coursed through your veins, the antidote had to be administered slowly, and your body is still recovering."A flood of recollections came flooding into my mind—battle, Odessa, the silver dagger plunged into my heart, the agony that followed, and then—Evelyn.I began panicking. "Evelyn," I gasped, my voice rasping. "Where is she?"Draven’s expressi

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 240 ODESSA’s TERMS

Evelyn’s PoVMy heart felt torn as I sank my eyes into my mother’s still figure. The Wolf Mother, Serena, lay on the ground unconscious and barely breathing. The silver dagger placed in her chest was a cruel reminder of my impossible choice.Odessa's voice sounded cold on my skin. "You know the terms, girl. Come with me, and she lives. Stay here, and she dies before your eyes."My hands clenched into fists, nails digging into my palm to hold back the inevitable breakdown. The pack barely breathed. They simply waited. I wanted someone to stop me; I wanted someone to throw themselves in the line of fire and say this was pointless. But there they stood in silence."Evelyn!" Marcus's voice broke the silence. There was desperation in it, something pleading, something that turned my stomach. I turned to him, and my heart shattered at the pain in his eyes, as though he watched me dying in front of him."Promise me," I whispered, my throat tight. "Promise me that you won't come after me."His

  • Mate? Or Die!   Chapter 239 THE WAR BEGINS

Evelyn’s PoVThe scent of blood and smoke filled the air and howls and screams reverberated throughout the woods as Odessa and her rogue pack stormed against us. I stood there frozen for a moment with my heart pounding wildly against my chest, as I saw the pack's defences collapse against the onslaught of their attack. The rogues outnumbered the pack, and the way they fought could be matched only with menacing madness. My fists were closed so tightly I could feel my nails digging painfully into my palms as I struggled to contain the panic rising inside me. I could not stand there and do nothing. Before I could move, Marcus appeared at my side, his face covered in dirt and blood. His eyes were watered wide with urgency as he pushed something into my hands: my grandmother’s relic."I found it for you," he began, his voice strained yet steady. "You have to use it, Evelyn. You are the only one who can."I stared at the relic with a racing mind, the one that had unleashed a sinister and un
