There was quite a distance from the door to the main gate. Both sides of the pathway were covered with plants of different heights. Many of the lamps were blocked, causing the pathway unusually dark. There was no one on the pathway at the moment and the chilly night breeze whirred in the air, making it extremely eerie to look at or to be on it. Sylvia tightened her jacket and held her breath as she strode along the eerie pathway. Just a few steps later, a long arm reached out to her from the dark and grabbed her arm. Sylvia was shocked but before she could scream, she was dragged into a familiar embrace. The man’s strong and hurried breathing came from above her head. Sylvia looked up and saw a handsome but frosty face. The man stared at her with a sharp gaze. Sylvia blinked twice before she tried to break free from the man’s embrace but his long arm constricted her waist tightly, preventing her from breaking free. She shouted, “Odell, let go of me!” The man tight
The man’s strong scent of cologne assaulted her nose like a tsunami. Sylvia tried pushing him away but he hugged her with both his arms. He hugged her so tightly that it cramped both her arms in between their chests. There was no space left for her to struggle. The chilly breeze continued to whirr and the leaves of the trees and plants rustled. Under the dim environment, the two of them stayed close together and showed no signs of separating for quite a while. Further away, behind a robust tree, a tall figure saw the two of them. He stared at the intimate duo and saw how the man forced himself onto the woman. Both hands of the woman were cramped tightly and she could not break free at all. He continued to stare with his frosty gaze. …Sometime later, as though the chilly breeze finally stopped, Odell let go of her. Sylvia seized the chance and pushed him away. Odell was caught off guard and was pushed to a stagger. Sylvia also took several steps backward. She wip
“Mommy!” Isabel scuttled away from Aunt Tonya and ran toward her mother. Sylvia carried the little girl in her arms and sat down beside the quiet little boy. She then smiled at Aunt Tonya. “Aunt Tonya, I’ll take care of them. Why don’t you go have some rest?” Aunt Tonya rubbed her eyes tiredly. “Okay, you too.” “Thank you.” Aunt Tonya then went out of the room. Sylvia sat down on the bed with both of her children in her arms. The two little ones looked at her and the girl asked, “Mommy, why is your face red?” Sylvia recalled Odell’s forceful kiss and it made her blush even harder. She gasped for air and forced a smile on her face. “Maybe it’s the wind.” “Are you sick again?” Isabel then got up and put her tiny hand on Sylvia’s forehead. Her soft and warm hand stroked the forehead for a few seconds before she retracted it. She could not tell if her mother was having a fever or not. Sylvia smiled and stroked her head. “Don’t worry, Mommy is fine.” The little gir
On the second morning, Sylvia was still fast asleep when she felt something heavy on her stomach. It felt like a soft rock falling on her. She opened her eyes and saw Isabel giggling at her. “Mommy, the sun is up! Hurry up and wake up!” “Isabel? Why are you awake at this hour?” Sylvia got up with a confused look. “The baddie is here. He said he’s taking us to some fun place today.” Isabel then looked outside the door. Sylvia followed her gaze and saw Odell waiting outside the door. He was leaning on the frame with a sleepy Liam in his arm. He had been staring at her deeply when she was still asleep. Sylvia glared at him the moment she widened her sleepy eyes. He got in! Not only that, he came all the way to her room! Odell curled his lips. “I’m here to bring the kids out. Are you coming?” Sylvia did not want to talk to him but she tended to be less frosty to him in front of the kids. “I have to attend some events at the Art Academy today. I don’t have the time.” O
Sylvia arrived at the event venue just on time and it was already crowded with people. She greeted the other lecturers she saw on the way as she went inside. Christopher found her soon enough and waved at her. “Sylvia, come on! We’re preparing to bake our New Year's cake! They are all waiting for you!” Sylvia went over with a smile. The cakes were already baked, so all that was left was the decoration. There were colorful creams, icing, chocolate-made figures, and all kinds of intricate decorations for everyone to decorate their own cake. Almost everyone participated in the cake-decorating event. It was even livelier than the Springsteen family’s event last night. The liveliness spread swiftly and Sylvia soon found herself decorating the cake with several other lecturers. One of the lecturers asked, “Ms. Ross, I heard you and Mr. Carter danced at the Springsteen family’s ball last night.” Her words directed almost all the attention toward Sylvia. Sylvia’s gaze shi
Sylvia froze. Thomas stroked and wiped the tip of her nose and then smiled at her. “There’s icing on your nose.” He smiled softly, as though he was a flower that bloomed in the spring after the snow melted away. He looked a lot warmer than his usual frosty self. Sylvia had a difficult time smiling or appreciating his kind gesture. Thomas noticed her blank reaction, so he asked, “What’s wrong?” “N-Nothing. Let’s go back, our cake is waiting,” she stammered and nervously walked away, trying to draw distance from him. Thomas felt slightly disheartened, but he followed her nevertheless. However, when he was at the table, he saw Sylvia got herself sandwiched between two female lecturers. He paused for a moment and sat down opposite her. The group soon gathered around the table. A piece of cake, taken randomly from everyone’s masterpiece, was served together with boxes of fruit juices. Christopher said with a smile, “Before we dig into our masterpiece, let’s have a to
He curled his lips and eyes and continued with a warm smile, “You’re only ruining it for me when you avoid me.” His words were like explosives that went off in Sylvia’s head. It blasted all the messy thoughts away and widened her eyes in shock. What did he mean by that? Thomas noticed the blank look on her face. He pinched her nose and said, “Stop staring into the air. Aren’t you going home?” His touch felt like a sting from a bee and it startled her, causing her to stagger a few steps to the side. It was at that moment that she saw Odell standing further behind Thomas. The man was wearing a navy blue coat. The frosty expression on his face was as cold as the weather. Isabel was in his left arm and Liam was on his right, holding his hand. The brother and sister were also staring at her and Thomas. Sylvia froze. “Odell? Why did you bring Isabel and Liam here?” Thomas heard her and turned around too. Odell stood there and glared at her and Thomas for a few seconds b
At the side door of the hall, the chilly wind whirred in the air. “It’s been a long time, Brother.” It was Thomas who spoke first after the long silent confrontation. Odell shot a deep gaze at him and asked, “Why are you teaching here at the academy?” “For a particular someone.” Odell’s frosty expression turned grim. He uttered each word with a hint of coldness, “She’s your sister-in-law.” Thomas’ calm and frosty look remained as he said, “As far as I know, you divorced her already.” “Even if we were already divorced, she could only be mine! She’s not someone you can extend your filthy fantasy to.” Thomas grinned in silence. Odell also pursed his lips in silence. As he regained his composure from his sudden anger, he said to Thomas, “I’d stop whatever thoughts I have for her if I were you. I’ll spare you this time but if I find out you’re trying to do anything to her, you’ll suffer the consequences.” Thomas did not answer. His calm and frosty look remained on his fa
She was her usual self in every aspect. She put her heart into her job and never started trouble so long as nobody tried to start trouble with her. The crew cycled through their locations during their shoot. The constant travel made her skin break out slightly, but there were no other concerns otherwise. The shoot progressed very smoothly and within three months, they managed to wrap up everything at the mountainous region previously mentioned. It was nearly evening when they wrapped up the shoot. Holding a bouquet in hand, she took a group picture with the crew and celebrated with everyone. After that, she planned to hitch a ride with another crew member and leave for home. To their demise, some men in uniform who claimed to be the road maintenance technicians showed up to break the bad news to them. They mentioned that they had to repair some of the roads urgently and so the way home was temporarily obstructed. The director took his phone and called the city hotline fo
He remembered his first meeting with Isabel. She was sitting all by herself on the floor, in the middle of nowhere. Her vulnerable expression only made her more endearing. So, he managed to get her to go to his place and installed her in his home. He fell for her and paid careful attention to all her needs. It did not take long before Isabel caught feelings for him as well. The two of them got together in no time. Their days were plain and ordinary, but also very fulfilling, that was until he met Clarice. With the help of his father, his power struggle with Roland had reached a tipping point. It was at that opportune moment when Clarice’s father saw something in Roland and planned to wed his daughter Clarice to him to join up their families, which was a cause for alarm for Decker. He stressed over it for an entire night before approaching Clarice himself the very next day. Clarice quickly caught feelings for him as well. Furthermore, Roland had been foolish enough to reject
Decker was smiling quite earnestly at Isabel. Isabel threw a deeply suspicious look at him, then she glanced at the stack of documents laid out on top of the table in front of her. “Transferal of Shares.” She was dumbfounded. "I've gone through the contract, it’s safe to sign so go ahead.” Roland picked up a pen and handed it to her. "Roland, I..." "Sign it first, I’ll explain when we get home.” Isabel frowned and tried to protest. "I—" "Don't make me have to beg." Isabel did not know how to respond. Fine. She briefly scanned through the contract. The contract stated Decker’s agreement to transfer the remaining forty percent of his shares in Rockwell Corporation to her. Roland must have talked to the shareholders of Rockwell Corporation about this as well. They all regarded Isabel with polite smiles. Isabel had flipped through the final page of the document. She signed her name on one of the marked-out sections. She proceeded to sign all thr
They ended the call shortly after that. Isabel glanced at Martha and was hesitating if she should break the news right away. Martha seemed to have sensed her staring and suddenly turned to her with a flash of concern. "Isabel, what's wrong?" Isabel took a deep breath and broke the news. "Auntie, Master Rockwell just passed away." Martha's eyes widened. After a lengthy silence that lasted more than ten seconds, she started to break out in tears. She covered her face with her hands and expressed amid bouts of tears mixed with laughter, “Wonderful! About time! I hope he enjoys life in the underworld. God knows that someone like him will never deserve a spot in heaven!” Isabel did not know whether she should celebrate with Martha or console her. Soon, Martha began to collect herself. She briefly wiped away her tears and joyfully took Isabel's hand. "Isabel, let’s go shopping! I’m in such a good mood today, I’m going to go on a shopping spree!” "Okay. But Roland w
Isabel held onto Roland's hand firmly during the entire drive home after leaving the hospital. It was because Roland’s hands were cold and rigid. Isabel sat with him and tirelessly rubbed his hand to keep them warm. After one hand was warm, she would shift her attention to the other. By the time she managed to warm the other hand, the original hand would turn cold again. She decided it was easier to take both of his hands and caress them with the warmth of her palms. Roland looked at her with a gentle glow deep within his eyes. “Thank you, Isabel,” he said softly. Thank you for loving him, and for sticking by his side all this time despite circumstances. Isabel smiled. “I’m just warming your hands, it's no big deal. Still, you’re welcome." Roland smiled faintly and left it at that. Soon, his hands began to warm up off of the heat of Isabel’s palms. When Isabel felt that his hands were no longer freezing, she prepared to pull her hand away. That was when
Decker looked nothing like his usual self. The pompous, arrogant man who held himself far above others and who expected everyone around him to kiss up to him because he was superior to them all. It was as if he had been plunged not only to Earth but a pile of swamp. He had completely lost his usual grace. Isabel said crossly, "Decker, have you gone mental? Is everything going on too much for you?” “Yeah, could you help me?” he said with a coy smile, “Just one hug should be enough to take care of it all.” Isabel rolled her eyes. Without warning, he suddenly braced himself and lunged right at Isabel, stepping past Brandon who was caught off guard by this sudden attack. Isabel barely had time to react. Just when it seemed like his hand was about to graze Isabel, a long pair of arms seized Isabel from behind and jerked her backward. It was swiftly followed by a long, muscular leg shooting outward right next to Isabel. Thump! Decker was kicked to the ground.
"How did you and Roland meet?" Decker suddenly asked. Isabel turned away, fully intent on ignoring him. "Did you meet each other at Carter Corporation? Or did you meet him outside of work and gradually fell in love with him, then you decided to set him up with a position at Carter Corporation?” What did he mean by that? Was he insinuating that Roland was relying on her to snake his way into Carter Corporation? She threw a sideways, belittling look at him. "Do you think Roland is anything like you? He wouldn’t latch on another woman to further his goals.” Decker was not upset by this as he continued with a smug smile. "Oh? Then how did he get into Carter Corporation?" “He proved his worth.” Isabel realized that she had been roped in by Decker again. Nevertheless, she continued, “He passed the interviews himself. I was one of the interviewers and initially planned to dismiss him, but he managed to leave a very good impression on my father and the rest was history.” "
"I never meant to kill him! Roland, you have to believe me. Why would I still try to deceive you when I’m in this state?” “In that case, you can go ahead and explain things to him in the afterlife.” Master Rockwell was taken aback by this, his demeanor tightened. "You...you..." Roland looked at him calmly. "Don’t worry, I won’t hurt you. It was Grandma and my parents who raised me. They instilled morals and virtue into me and made sure I’d grow into a decent man.” Master Rockwell was briefly relieved to hear this, but before he could rid himself of his trepidation, Roland continued in a dark voice, "But I won’t forget about you and Decker bribing all those media outlets to defame Isabel. I know you manipulated the stock prices to try to kick me out of the corporation. I’ll make sure to settle our score through the legal system.” If convicted guilty, they would have to rot in prison. “Roland… listen to me, Roland. Decker is your uncle. If you want revenge, you can come
Master Rockwell must have heard their shifting movements and opened his eyes. When he recognized the faces of Roland and Isabel, there was a brief glow in his murky eyes. He motioned to the nurse to have her help him sit up from the bed. After he managed to position himself seated up against the head of the bed, he asked the nurse to leave. Then he cast a loving, tender smile on Roland and Isabel. “Roland, Isabel, please have a seat.” Roland said disinterestedly, "We have things to get to, just hurry up and tell us what you have to say." Isabel stayed silent. A look flashed in Master Rockwell's eyes. Then, he turned to Isabel and expressed regretfully, "Isabel, I’m a foolish old man, it was me who told Decker to leak pictures of you two. He had no choice because I forced him to do so. If you have to blame someone, blame me!” Isabel frowned. She was somewhat impressed by how smoothly the old man switched his mask from one to another. From a forlorn and sad state t
