LAKE

“Fuck.” Fuck. Damn it. I grabbed Maverick’s hand and pulled her out of the chair. “Come with me.”

“What the hell? Care to tell me what’s going on?” She looked horrified but came with me anyway.

We entered the house, and I took the stairs to the hallway towards the study. I’d discreetly contacted Terzo to see if he could get to the country to surprise Maverick.

She had been worried about her brother for months, but this was not a coincidence since Gaetano was here.

I unlocked the door to the study and pushed her in. Then, quietly, I shut the door behind us.

“We’re not making out— Oh, my God!” She jumped before me with big eyes, staring at the man standing in the corner. “Terzo!”

I’d never seen her so happy, like a kid who just received a pony. She ran towards her brother, and Terzo caught her on the waist and hugged her tight.

I would have punched Terzo’s face until his eyes popped out from each socket if they weren't siblings.

“I miss you, too, little sis.”

“Oh, my God. I can’t b

MAVERICKAnd here I thought I would have a better life after college, a great career, away from danger. Then there it was, facing another threat— the monster himself. At least, that was how his enemies saw him, and they feared him for a reason.Staring at my brother, I was overwhelmed with many emotions and protective instincts towards him. I just met him months ago, yet I had so much love and loyalty to him.My heart crashed in my chest, thinking that I might not see him again, that it was okay for him to die, and that he’d accepted his fate at his father’s hand.I wanted to run to the room, curl into a ball, and cry until I couldn’t. I guess life had never been fair, and deep inside, maybe he was also scared for his life like me. He was just an expert in masking his emotions.“Don’t do this,” he’d been trying to talk me out about meeting our father.“I know there is no guarantee I can convince him, I mean, zero chance. At least I did my best, whatever the outcome, asshole. Unlike yo

MAVERICK“Guys,” Linden called us from the passenger seat, showing us the layout on the tablet screen. “This is the blueprint of the restaurant. These are the exits. I won’t come inside. I have to make sure all possible angles are safe. I have two teams inbound. One was behind us, the other was watching the road exits, and I put snipers to make sure no one could crash the party.” He looked at me. “Don’t worry, Terzo is safe.”“Why can’t he just ask for help from Kelsey or just run away?”“They will take his father instead. Gaetano is more valuable than Terzo. They can’t know he’s in town.” That made sense.I blew a shaky breath as I stepped out of the SUV. We were meeting at a Chinese restaurant. As soon as I stepped in, I felt an instant coldness seeping through my veins. There were no customers, one woman at the cashier, and then three men sitting on the stool. They looked like they weren’t from around here with their dark outfits.“Sir, this way, please?” We knew Lake couldn’t come

LAKEThe moment Maverick came out of the Chinese restaurant wiping off the tears from her face, I knew it didn’t go as she planned.“Maverick.” I helped her get in the car and pulled her in my arms.“He’s the most vicious man I’ve ever met. I’m even ashamed that that man was my father. I am disgusted that I tried to find him. Maybe I should have just left him alone.”“I’m so sorry, baby, that it didn’t go as you planned.” No matter how I tried soothing her, she still continued sobbing against my chest.I felt the immense pain coming from her. It was also my fault that I dug deeper to know the identity of her father. Now, she was paying for what I’d done.“Take me to Terzo.” She pulled away, grabbed the tissue I offered, and blew her nose after her apology.“We’re going there now. I know I shouldn’t ask this, but are you okay?”“No.” Her reply was instant. She drew a deep breath and glanced at me. “He said he has to make a good example of what loyalty means to the organization. MAVERICKI’d never been so drunk in my entire life that my world started spinning. I remembered throwing up and puking my guts out. That was all.I woke up with the most horrible headache in history. It was hammering, feeling my head squeeze, about to implode, and my stomach was empty. I cracked my eyes open. The first thing I saw was the paper on the nightstand Lake gave me last night.I looked down at my body. I was in my pajamas. I felt terrible that I was a mess. At the same time, there was still the void— the emptiness in my chest. I grabbed the paper and unfolded it. My eyes started stinging, and I could barely see the ugly scribble of my brother’s penmanship.Dear Maverick,I don’t know why I am writing this, but I guess it’s better than calling you and saying goodbye. It hurts less listening to your voice for the last time. You can also keep this as a remembrance. What the fuck am I doing? I don’t know, sis. I guess I owe you an apology for tricking you. While alone in the stu

LAKE“Uncle, what are you doing here?” The look on his face alone, I knew something terrible happened.“Where have you two been? And you’re not answering your phone.”“I left my phone here. We just went for a horse ride.”“Without your men?” He glanced over at Owen and Homer.“They wanted some time alone, sir,” Homer answered.“Inside the property, uncle. Why? What’s going on?” I was just kissing Maverick when I heard Tennessee’s gallop. George came to tell us that we had visitors. He breathed deeply as if gathering a strength within. “I don’t know how to break this news to you, Maverick, but maybe you should sit down first.”“No.” She swallowed hard and blinked back the tears. “Just tell me already, Mr. Braddson.”“The private jet that carried Gaetano and Terzo just crashed in the Pacific Ocean.”I heard a gasp, and it came from Maverick.“What?” I just stared in utter shock. A shiver coursed through me, and I felt like someone just pulled the ground under my feet.“Hey.” Owen caught

LAKEI cursed under my breath. It just became clearer to her why all those men were outside. She looked utterly terrified than I’d ever seen her.“Oh, my God. They think I killed my ruthless father and my brother to take over the family business? That’s absurd. That’s ridiculous. I don’t want to do anything with them. They can have whatever they want.”“Exactly, but they won’t just take your word for it, baby.” When she glared at me, I raised my hands. “I’m just making a point here.”“God.” She blew a shaky breath. “What have I done? I just killed my brother. I mean literally. He would still be alive today if he had not come yesterday.”“I’m so sorry, Maverick, but you must take this threat seriously,” Linden said.“What should we do, Linden, Uncle?”“They’re coming after your wife, Winston. That’s for sure. If you come in between, or anyone will stop them. They don’t care if it’s a dog—”“Yeah. Terzo just said even a cockroach,” she added, shaking her head. “I want to talk to someone

MAVERICKTwo days later, Moses had to call off the search. They found some parts of the jet but none of the bodies. I’d lost hope. It was tragic.I couldn’t remember anyone who had survived a plane crash. I knew and had accepted the fact that they were dead, including the crew and Gaetano’s men on board.Sicily. Who would have thought my first trip outside the country was to Sicily for a funeral and to clear my name?Since Moses got to talk to Ugo, the head of the Conti crime family, it seemed that there was a truce. For a moment, I felt safe, but I knew it wouldn’t be any longer until I’d proven them about my innocence.Lake had been pacing in the hotel room for thirty minutes. He wasn’t on board with the idea of me meeting Celestina and her husband, Giosue. I learned that London had a chilling confrontation with Giosue before. As a way of showing respect to the dead, I put on a black outfit.“You’re giving me a headache,” I complained. For the last two days since I asked Moses to he

MAVERICKGiosue was younger than I expected, the same age as Terzo. He was shorter and whiter, dark eyes cold as ice and emotionless. He hadn’t talked, but he already terrified me.“Lake Winston, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” He shook Lake’s hand before he met my gaze, giving me a chill. His eyes seemingly pathways to dark abysses.“Welcome home, Maverick.”“Thank you.” I gripped the hand he offered for a handshake.A man behind him came forward. “Please, leave your weapons at the corner.”“It’s fine, Tabo,” he dismissed him. “Join me.”We settled in the living room. Outside the window, there were many black men. I didn’t know if they came to pay their respects or to show their support for what was left of the Siciliano family.“I believe you are innocent. I’m sorry for your loss. You don’t have to come over if it’s only for me. I believe Mr. Braddson, the first time he said you had nothing to do with that tragic accident, but the people they left behind are constantly tense about who

TERZOThe thick wooden doubled-door swung open to my father’s office. It was one of the biggest rooms in the house where business was discussed and where the most secured safe and panic room were situated, where he kept his most valuables.I was assaulted by the scents of cedar wood and expensive cigars hung thick in the air.I let go of a shuddering breath as I stepped inside. Gaetano Siciliano, the patriarch of the family, the Don— one of the most powerful and feared heads of the mafias in Italian history— my father was sitting in his chair before his massive desk. His thick brows knitted together, hanging low over his dark caramel eyes and gray hair cut stylishly. In his sixties, he was still fit, strong, and could beat me in the ring if he desired to, but he always humbly said his prime was over.“Figlio.”“Come va, papa?”Papa nodded in acknowledgment. “Come in. How’s your sister?”Standing in the left corner that caught my eye was Celestina, my other beautiful sister who had bee

MAVERICKI smiled as we finally had time for each other. Atlas just fell asleep.Lake cupped my face and traced my lips with his thumb. “Thank you for making me complete, the happiest man on this planet, and for being my wife.”My heart exploded with his words with so much joy. “Ditto. Now, no more talking. Just get rid of your clothes.”He held his laugh, shaking his head as we began taking our clothes off. There was nothing much to strip off. I was in my sexy red lingerie, and he was in his pants. To be honest, our only problem was our time for both of us— most of the time while we were naked in bed, Atlas began waking up and started to cry.“I love you, baby.”I parted my lips as I watched the desire flicker in his eyes. He then dipped down, tagging my bottom lip between his teeth. He groaned as he pressed his hard cock against my lower belly and then cupped my ass as he finally captured my mouth in a passionate kiss, gliding his tongue inside, dominating me.Moaning, I instantly w

MAVERICKEight months later, Southampton I had a teary-eyed earlier as Cooper carried the precious angel I’d never thought I could love beyond anything in this world. He was five months old today and became the center of our universe. He was our ringbearer, and everyone, oh and ah, as he put on a cute little suit, while Nana and Beatreigh had been giggling since I walked down the aisle with my father, Gaetano.Like what he promised to my husband when Lake asked for the blessings he would be here, my friends and family, everyone I loved, including Terzo and Celestina. Lake did his luck inviting my mother. Surprisingly, she was here alone.“What’s in your head, baby?” the most handsome groom I’d ever seen smiled. He still took my breath away when he did that. After all these years of finding my perfect one, he came to me at the right time, even for the wrong reason. Then, our whole universe, Atlas Sawyer Bates Winston, came into our world, adding more colors to our lives. Sawyer was my

LAKE“Oh, my God!” My mother was the first to react, seeing the golf ball pop into blue smoke as soon as my uncle executed a stroke.“I knew it. Look at her abdomen,” Augustine said to my mother.“I told you, remember?” Mom seemed to find a new good friend in Augustine. They went to coffee or shopping together and sometimes baked at home. I was glad they got along so well. They were going to be excellent guides in raising our child. When we held our gender reveal party, Maverick was already six months pregnant. It was worth the wait. Everyone was here— our families, close friends, her friends from the Bazz, and, of course, our extended family.“You should promote my baby products, Maverick.”Amused, I shook my head at Estelle. “Give my wife a break.”“You’re the one who’s not giving her a break,” London replied. “She’s going to wear LH maternity dress for the photoshoots.“Congratulations, cuz.” Striker came to me.“Thanks.” We hugged each other.“Are you ready to be a father?”“I don

MAVERICK“Whoa. Why the long face?” I shoved a spoonful of butter pecan ice cream into my mouth as I watched Lake’s face seemingly in deep, miserable thoughts. “Babe?”“Yeah?” He looked at me, looking guilty.“Did you just cheat on me in that four hours?”“Baby, why do you always think like that?”“Lake, cheating doesn’t only mean you’re sleeping or kissing the other woman. Could be lying, keeping something important from me.”“I know.” He rose from the chair to join me on the couch. Then he pulled me close to him so he could hug me. “You like that?”“Yeah. You want some?” I scooped and offered, but he shook his head.“I want to tell you something.” I could feel the heaviness of guilt in his voice. Whatever he was about to say, I was sure he had reasons.“Shoot.”“I went to Nana.” It lightened up my chest when he called my grandmother Nana. One time, when he talked about my father, he called him Papa even though I still called Gaetano by his name.“And?” I met his gaze.“Your mother w

LAKE“She did not ruin your life. You ruined your own life by sleeping with the most dangerous man,” Augustine spat her anger out.I felt her anger towards her daughter was decades long, and she just had time to let it out of her chest.“You were only eighteen,” she added. “I had high hopes for you, but you disappointed your father. You were reckless and stupid and slept with a married man. You didn’t even know what care and love meant, and after you were gone for months, you came to me five months pregnant. Don’t blame your miserable life and poor choices on the poor, innocent child. She’s been through enough and all of that because you caused her so much pain.”“What do you want from my wife, Florence?”She lifted her chin. “I just wanted to meet her.”“Why now? Why not before when she didn’t have a mother at her first school recital? On her first time having a period? I’m your last to get out of here without being dragged into a van. Terzo is still in town, Florence.”She blinked t

LAKE“Are you okay?” I glanced down at Maverick working on her tan beside the pool. She looked pretty satisfied and comfortable in her yellow two-piece swimsuit and sunglasses, which shielded her eyes from the blazing sun.“Why do you keep asking me that?” She slightly lifted her chin.“Did you put enough sunscreen on?” I wanted to see her eyes but was disappointed that she kept her sunglasses on.“Don’t worry. I need more Vitamin D.” She strolled her gaze at me.“My Vitamin D isn’t enough for you?”When she saw me smirking, she slightly tipped her head down, glaring. “Not everything is about your dick, Lake. Going somewhere?”“Yeah. I’ll be back in a couple of hours.”“A date?”“Yes, Maverick. I have a date. You might as well put Airtag on me.”“Can you buy butter pecan ice cream for me?”“Of course. Anything else?”“Bring your cock back untouched.”I laughed, making her frown. “My cock is exclusively yours, baby.” I bent down to cup her face and kissed her on the lips. “I promise yo

MAVERICK“Linden made fun of me. He sent me every copy of the books he read while Estelle had their first baby, Gabrielle. I’m done reading the first two books.”“Is that why you’re so calmer than me because of these books?”“You may be stubborn, but when it comes to our unborn child, you’re very responsible. Hence, we never argued about it. We most argued about money and my spending on you.”“I did not tell you that I love the ring.” I raised my hand. It was a Marquise cut, the same size as my first engagement ring.“Thank you, baby. I have good taste, you know.” I found some meaning in his words.“I bet.”Once he was done eating, he went to a small fridge and brought two bottled water. He opened one and gave it to me.“Thank you.” I drank it.“Can you stay a little longer?”“Why? MAVERICKWe finally found out the gender of our baby this morning. I could see the joy in Lake’s eyes as the doctor told us. He was excited and couldn’t wait to meet our baby. He was even teary-eyed as he kissed my tummy. One thing he assured me was that he didn’t care about either a boy or a girl as long as our child was healthy, and I couldn’t agree more.On the other hand, I was a little bit scared of a lot of things, including labor and the pressure of being a first-time mother.I was still astounded at how lucky I was to be his wife. Aside from being overprotective and bossy, he was also thoughtful and loving. After Beatreigh, Nana, and I visited a bridal boutique, we had a late lunch, and then I decided to pay a visit to my husband, who was never invited to the Chairman and CEO’s office. The last time I planned on walking into this building was my confrontation with Wallace, but it didn’t happen. So, I thought I would surprise Lake.I knocked on his office door when Venus told m
