Chapter 115 - Alice

last update Last Updated: 2024-08-01 18:11:54

There should have been a limit to how many tears Alice could shed in the space of just three days. But apparently not.

Sitting in one of the chairs in the visiting room closest to the operating room, Alice lost count of how long she had been curled up there, her tear-stained face hidden in her hands, as she waited for news of her grandfather’s surgery. Kendra and Amber had long since left, seeming more concerned about what would become of Micah than about Lucas’s condition, but still, their last words before leaving were still there, haunting Alice.

If her grandfather died, it would be her fault.

“Lucas will be fine…” Massimo murmured, sitting in his wheelchair across from her, though she didn’t have the strength to look at him “The defibrillator was not necessary and it's a cardiac pacemaker that’s going to take him, Alice.”

“I… I shouldn’t have been so selfish…” she sobbed softly “I should have thought better about the stress it would cause him… Oh, God, how could

At the same time I can understand why Massimo doesn’t want Alice to be close to Micah, I think he’s worried that Micah might take Alice away from him because Micah might think he’s not good enough for Alice when he’s cripple. I find Massimo has a very low self confidence in himself.

“There she is! Our brave little girl!” Thea cried, not even waiting for her husband to park the car completely before opening the door, her arms wide open and ready to welcome Millicent.“Thea!” Millie cheered along with her, jumping out of the seat to hug her “I miss you!”“Not as much as we miss you, honey…” the old lady whimpered, cradling Millicent in her arms as Alice and Massimo got out of the car, carrying all the things their daughter had brought from the hospital.“Look! Dr. Weston gave me this lollipop when I left! She said it’ll make my tongue blue!” she said happily, pulling the candy out of her coat pocket “Mommy said she’s going to be my new doctor! I wish she could take care of Grandpa Lucas too, because he started sleeping again and I didn’t get to play with him before I left.” Millie sighed, very serious “You know, the hospital is nice. There are toys and Mommy showed me what it’s like to work as a nurse, but the needles hurt and the food isn’t as good

And so, Pinocchio, now transformed into a real boy, finally went to school, where he told all his classmates about the traps the world held for those who chose to be bad boys. The end.” Massimo finished reading the picture book, but kept it open so the little girl and the puppy sitting on his lap could continue looking at the drawings.“Look, Lady, the dumb boys are still over there.” Millicent pointed to the animals huddled far away from Pinocchio, looking remorseful “They look like Dominic!” she stated, with the kind of harmless mischief only a child could muster.“Dominic Carnby? Vincent Carnby’s son?” Massimo asked, surprised. “I thought he was a good boy. He’s not trying to bully you like those other boys did, is he? Because, I know his father. I can talk to him, if that brat is bothering you…”“No. He’s not as mean as those big boys.” Millie sighed, stretching as if this were a subject that required much thought “But he’s so annoying! Mom always tel

“Daddy, this isn’t a new story.” Millicent laughed “This is Cinderella.”“Well, I can’t deny that there are some similarities.” He sighed, thinking about how much easier everything would have been if his Cinderella had left a shoe for him to find a little earlier than five years later “But, you’ll soon realize what makes them a little different. Especially because this story is more about the prince than it is about her. At least, that’s the side of the story I’m most familiar with.”“I’ve never seen a story about a prince before!” she said excitedly “Will he talk to his princess at the end? Will he fight a dragon?”“We’ll see…” Massimo laughed sadly, hoping she wouldn’t be too disappointed “For starters, this prince didn’t know he was born a prince until he was a little older. His mother was a kind seamstress who fell in love with the future king and, together, they ended up… Uh… Planting a seed that was watered with lots of love and grew into a baby.” He hoped that di

“And… Would the prince really hate the baby?” Millie murmured, her eyes filling with tears.“Of course not!” Massimo assured, leaning over the bed so he could get even closer to her “On the contrary, after the princess left, even though he didn’t know she had left with his child, he felt like his life only had one meaning: trying to become king. And not even that made him truly happy. Deep down, he always felt like there was a part of him that was missing. And then… He got really sick after… Falling off his horse. He needed a healer who could take care of him, but the prince didn’t want anyone. Until… The princess discovered he needed help and decided she would use her healing skills to make him feel better. And, when she came to his castle, she also brought their baby, although the prince didn’t know it. Hurt inside and out, he was even mean to them at first. But, you know what?”“What, Daddy?”“Very quickly, he discovered he loved that baby more than he had ever loved

Sleepless nights had become a constant for Alice lately. But tonight, especially, it felt like an invisible hand was squeezing her throat, stealing her breath and making her feel a despair that was hard to explain. Or, perhaps, too easy. She knew that Massimo must have told Millicent the truth by now, and it was killing Alice inside. God, she wished she could just be happy that she had been wrong about him all this time. Now, her baby would have a loving father, all the financial support in the world to make all her dreams come true, and a real home, much better and more welcoming than the Dawsey house would ever be. And, the truth is that a part of Alice was happy and relieved to finally have put an end to that lie that had been suffocating her for the past few months, every time she saw Massimo and Millie acting like the father and daughter they had no idea they really were…But, a much bigger and much more fragile part of her was in deep agony with the possibility that M

“He’s your father.”It had been so long since Alice needed to say those words. Hearing them hang in the air was both a relief and a pain, because, after everything she had been through when she discovered the truth about her birth, she knew very well the kind of anger and revolt that Millie must be feeling, even as a child. However, even so, Alice forced herself to smile, ignoring the tears that were starting to flow.“I… I’m so sorry for not telling you this before… I shouldn’t have hidden you from each other. I’m so, so sorry that you didn’t have a father since you were born, like you and Massimo deserved…”“Don’t cry, mommy!” Millie begged, alarmed “I’m not mad with you!”“How can you not be?” Alice sniffed, desolate “I shouldn’t have lied about that. I should have always protected you, but I ended up hurting you…”“Daddy told me that he lost his memory and you were afraid that he wouldn’t love me, so you hid me. Just like Sleeping Beauty’

“Mommy! I’m going to be late for class!” Millie complained, but Alice continued to straighten her coat, wanting to make sure her baby was wrapped up properly.“Are you sure it's hot enough? I brought another coat if you want.” Alice said, as she placed the back of her hand on Millicent's forehead “Are you feeling cold or dizzy? I think we should put the thermometer in you again…”“Mommy…” her daughter rolled over in her lap, looking like she wanted to jump through the open bedroom window “I'm not sick! I want to see my friends.”"She is fine." Massimo sighed, sitting on the other leather seat of the small limousine “I've already spoken to the director and the security guards will be patrolling the corridors at all times for the nex

Everything seemed to be a rollercoaster of emotions for Alice lately, even when she was sitting comfortably at one of the tables at her favorite coffee shop.Micah... Well, her father, he was only three minutes late after the time they had agreed upon, but even so, she still found herself staring nervously at the entrance of the coffee shop, hoping that he would walk through that door at any moment, before her mind made her give up on that meeting. God knew that Alice had started to question her choices from the moment she had sent a message to Massimo telling him what she was going to do that day.It wasn't like he was worried about what she was doing anyway, since they had barely spoken that last week unless Millie insisted on it happening. Probably his only requirement would be that she keep Millicent away from Micah as much as possible, until th

“Look! Here comes our lovely bride!”At the sound of her aunt's cheerful and even slightly emotional voice, Millicent forced a smile, trying to look as light and happy as possible as she walked towards them, as any bride should be. Around her, the engagement party continued exactly as she had left it, flawless with drinks being served to smiling guests and the decor without a single flower petal out of place. Everything was perfect and she could see that everyone there, especially her family, also thought the same. And knowing that almost made her regret what they were about to witness.“You look so beautiful, Millie…” her Aunt Heidi was the first to come over, wrapping her in a warm hug “God, I can hardly believe that soon we will actually see you in a wedding dress and walking into a church...”“You look like you were a little girl just a few hours ago…” Thea, who had been her nanny throughout her childhood, took another tissue from the almost empty box on her lap “And now you are go

“You look so beautiful, Debbie... Isn't it amazing how that dress makes your hair color pop?” Evangeline hummed, and, even though she struggled, Deborah had her chin held and was forced to look at her own reflection in the mirror before them. “You… You really think so?” she swallowed nervously. “Of course! This will be perfect to shut up all those mean girls who are always talking about how this beautiful red is a mark of the God of Discord. Oh, I would give anything to have hair like that too...” Evangeline sighed, running her fingers through her perfectly straight, snow-white hair. "Do not say that. Your hair is perfect. How could it not be? It is a symbol of the Moon Goddess.” Deborah turned to face her cousin, intertwining their hands “And, don’t worry. I know that before I was always wetting your shoulder with my tears because of this, but... Iron is always saying that my hair is beautiful, so... I have no reason to cry anymore. “Okay, honey. Now… Open your eyes.” Alice asked and, when Millicent opened her eyes and looked at her reflection in the mirror, the smile that appeared on her face made her mother's heart more than happy. “That’s amazing, Mom!” Millie smiled to herself, moving closer to the reflection to observe in more detail the way Alice had painted her eyelids “I’m… I’m pretty, right?” she asked with a shy smile, as her hands nervously twisted the hem of the dark green dress, the same color as her eyes, that she was wearing. “You are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen, honey.” Alice sniffled, holding her daughter's face, unable to stop the tears from flowing. “Mom, please… Don’t cry again.” her daughter asked, hugging her. "Sorry. It’s just… One day you were my little girl, running around the house wanting to play with your dolls and now… You’re a 16 year old girl, almost as tall as me and getting ready for your first date.” she had to stop once again to stop herself from bursting int

“And this is the role of fibroblasts in the healing process.” Alice spoke on the phone, as she took her pie out of the oven, happy to see that the dough had turned golden and crispy, exactly how her husband liked it “You can read more about this in the Cell Biology book. Any other questions, Lindsey?”“No, Alice.” the freshman sighed on the other end of the line, clearly relieved “You saved my life. And thank you for letting me record our conversation, it will help me a lot to review all of this for the next test. I just hope it’s not as killer as the last one.” she lamented “Mrs. Doherty was right. You are the best monitor we could ask for.” “It’s just my job.” Alice laughed, opening the cabinet doors where the dishes were “Now, if you don't have any more questions, I'll hang up now, okay? And, if any of your friends comment they tried to contact me this weekend and couldn't, can you let them know that I'm busy? And also remind them that my work as a monitor can only take place dur

“I… I’m sorry if your father isn’t a good father.” Millicent said, feeling like it wasn't right to leave him alone there, even though he clearly wanted that "My mother also had very bad parents and they hurt her a lot, until she found out they had lied and were not her real parents…”“I don’t think I’ll be that lucky.” he grumbled, not looking at her.“Well, that's bad, but that's not what I was going to suggest. When I was very little, mommy… I mean, my Mom told me that bad parents make their children wonder what they did wrong to be treated badly. But the real question should be: how can a father or mother be so mean to their own child? Never let the bad words of your family get to you. Just because a person is your family, doesn't mean he or she is right about yoy.” Millicent recited, although the memories of her mother's words were a little blurry, coming from the time when they still lived in that small room in the Dawsey mansion and she didn't even know her father existed.“That

“Okay, class. We are already accommodating your parents in the main auditorium.” Mrs. Keeley, one of the 3rd grade teachers, clapped her hands as she entered the classroom full of children, quickly grabbing the basket full of cookies that was on the table "Everything is ready, so Miss Shepherd will be calling you any moment, okay? Don't forget the chorus of the song and much less the part reserved just for your father. I’m counting on you!” she said, her voice so fast it was almost difficult to understand, as she left the room once again, practically running towards the auditorium where the Father's Day performance would take place. “You shouldn’t have left putting those bows on the brownies at the last possible moment, Poppy!” Cassie grumbled, but still didn't stop applying the glue stick to the glittery paper bows. “It’s not my fault!” Poppy whimpered, desperately trying to glue the bows onto the cellophane of the brownies she was giving her father as a gift “Mom told me she would

“And, as a last question, Mrs. Bianchi, how do you feel, as the creator, seeing your social project come so far and reach so many people positively?” the reporter asked, turning the microphone towards her as the cameras were turned towards them. “It’s a wonderful feeling. Every day, we receive several families who are unable to even obtain a loan to pay their medical expenses and, here, we are able to serve them in the best possible way, often restoring the quality of life that they had lost a long time ago. It's teamwork from a fantastic team of not only nurses, but also doctors and other healthcare professionals, who I was very lucky to be able to bring together here to support this initiative. My expectations for the future are that we can further expand our capabilities and be able to serve oncology and kidney patients soon.” “That’s great to hear.” the reporter said, his excessively white teeth gleaming against the sun as he smiled at the camera. “And that was our interview with

“Elise?” His voice cracked, sounding almost as if all the air had been stolen from his lungs."Are you okay?" she murmured, moving even closer to him to caress his face, her hands feeling as soft as he remembered “Did you have a nightmare? You were talking in your sleep, but I couldn’t understand…”“Elise?! Is it really you?” Micah sat up with a start, but only managed to feel even more confused when he realized he was lying on a bed, in Elise's youthful room, with the same lilac wallpaper and one of the walls covered in sheet music, next to her grand piano. A few meters away from the bed was the balcony, with the glass doors ajar, where he used to sneak into her room after climbing the large empress tree that was right next to it.“Of course it's me…” her eyebrows furrowed more and more “Are you sure you're okay, Micah? I know you spent the whole day helping your father prune the trees in the garden. If you want to go home and get some rest, I don't mind. We can do it another night…”
