Chapter 5

Author: Cozy Season
Matthew was quick to respond. "Yes, Mr. Lambert."

Matthew signaled for Yvonne to get on his back, but Yvonne backed away quickly, waving her hand. "No, no, Will, I'm fine. Shawn can take me to the infirmary…"

She lowered her head. "Besides, I still have class in the afternoon. If I leave, I won't be able to take notes for Charles."

"He can take his own notes. Why are you taking notes for him?" William asked.

Yvonne bit her lip without answering.

Even Matthew couldn't help but pity her.

Yvonne was an heiress in her own right. Why was she putting herself through all this? What had the Lambert family done to her all these years?

"Ms. Sullivan, let me take you to the hospital," he said.

"I can't trouble you like that," Yvonne said in feigned panic. "I can go myself later."

Seeing this, William took off his jacket and tossed it at Matthew. "Go get the car. I'll drive her to the hospital."

Matthew was taken aback. "Mr. Lambert…"

William crouched slightly, his back still straight and upright.

"Thank you, Will." This time, Yvonne clambered onto his back without further protest.

Matthew was flabbergasted.

What happened to "not wanting to trouble" him?

Why did she get on William's back so quickly?

Shawn was just about to say something when he caught sight of the piercing look William was giving him. He swallowed his words.

Without leaving room for argument, William said, "Please let your teachers know that Yvie will not be attending this afternoon's classes."

Shawn nodded mutely.

With that, William carried Yvonne out of the school on his back.

Docile and quiet, Yvonne leaned against his broad back, moving as little as possible.

William had broad shoulders and a strong back. His gait was steady, so she had no fear of falling at all.

Along the way, she simply stared at his side profile, lost in thought.

William was such a strong and capable man. How did he end up getting killed by the Lamberts' scheming?

If he hadn't returned to Seaville and stayed abroad, he wouldn't have ended up dying in the accident.

At the hospital, William helped Yvonne with the medical paperwork—essentially, he paid her bills—while Matthew stayed by her side. After the doctor prescribed her the necessary medication, Yvonne asked, "Mr. Matthew, can we go home now?"

"Mr.—" Matthew's face darkened at the address.

Did he look that old?

"Soon. Mr. Lambert just has to pick up your medication."

"Doesn't he have any medicine at Roselake Manor?" Yvonne asked.

"Mr. Lambert rarely stays there. Besides, he just came back, so there are no medical supplies there," Matthew answered dutifully.

"Oh." Yvonne stared at William, who was a short distance away. "When is Will leaving, then?"

"Why do you ask, Ms. Sullivan?"

Her concern was when William would finally separate himself from the Lamberts. Her hope was that he'd leave Seaville for good. Otherwise, in six months, the Lamberts would make their move against him.

"L Group recently established a branch here at Seaville. Mr. Lambert has plans to settle in Seaville for the next five years, so he won't be leaving anytime soon."

"What? Five years?" Yvonne couldn't help but raise her voice.

Everyone in the hallway turned to look at her in confusion.

Matthew was surprised. "Do you really want Mr. Lambert to leave that badly, Ms. Sullivan?"

"No, not really."

Five years?

No wonder William died in Seaville in her previous life.

He hadn't left Seaville after all.

"What are you two talking about?" William asked when he returned, carrying a bag full of medicines and ointments.

Yvonne stood up and spoke before Matthew could. "Oh, nothing. Just making small talk with Mr. Matthew."

The form of address felt like a punch in Matthew's gut.

He and William were actually about the same age.

Why did William get to be called by his first name while he got an honorific that made him sound old?

"Matthew, get the car."

"Yes, sir."

After Matthew had left, William crouched down in front of Yvonne and took out the alcohol and iodine from the bag he was holding.

Seeing that he intended to treat her wound right there, Yvonne instinctively pulled her leg back. "Do we have to do that here?"

"Yes."

William's movements were efficient and practiced. He quickly disinfected her wound.

When the alcohol touched her wounds, Yvonne couldn't hold back the gasp of pain.

William paused. "Bear with it."

Yvonne nodded obediently.

Once he wrapped her knee with a bandage, the treatment was complete.

"Can you walk on your own?" William asked.

Yvonne pulled a face, hesitating.

Truthfully, she was perfectly fine.

Her fall down the stairs had been deliberate, so it was a controlled landing. At school, the limping had been an act, and her wounds just looked serious. They were really nothing but surface injuries.

However, getting William to carry her was the perfect opportunity to get close to him, so she answered, "Not really."

"Alright. Walk on your own, then."

Yvonne's mouth fell open in incredulity.

She just said she couldn't walk on her own!

William had already stood up by then. Afraid he would leave her behind, Yvonne quickly followed.

Because of the bandage on her knee, her gait was stiff and awkward, making her look like a limping little fool.

William deliberately slowed his pace, allowing her to stay just a few steps behind him.

When they reached the hospital's parking lot, Matthew was already there waiting for them. He got out of the car and opened the door.

Yvonne's forehead was covered in sweat at that point, as if she had run all the way there.

"Ms. Sullivan, do you need me to carry you into the house later?" Matthew asked in concern.

Before Yvonne could say anything, William said flatly, "No need for that. Her legs work just fine."

Yvonne clenched her fists in frustration.

Why was William acting so different now?

During the journey, William kept his eyes closed, resting.

Yvonne did not say anything either.

Matthew glanced at them curiously through the rearview mirror. He felt a peculiar, almost tangible tension filling the car.

When they arrived at Roselake Manor, William took out Yvonne's ID from his shirt pocket and handed it to her. "Your ID."

Yvonne stared at the card nervously.

William did notice the ID that she had left behind on purpose!

"Thanks, Will…"

Before Yvonne could reach out to take the ID, William snatched it back. "I'm waiting for your explanation," he said coldly.

The atmosphere in the car suddenly became stifling.Sensing the tension, Matthew quickly raised the partition in the car."I... I don't want to stay at a hotel," Yvonne said softly."So you intend to stay at my place and not leave?" William questioned."I'm scared…" Yvonne lowered her head and sobbed, "I don't have a single relative left in this world. The other night, I overheard Mrs. Lambert saying something about taking over the inheritance."The moment those words came out of her mouth, William frowned hard."I don't know if they were talking about me, but I got scared... But if they weren't talking about me, then who else could they mean? Will, I don't want to live with the Lambert family anymore. They're really scary…"As Yvonne cried, she observed William's reaction discreetly.William had already lost both of his parents and had only recently been taken back in by the Lamberts. "Do you even understand what you're saying?""I-I do. I know it's a bit much..."It was the first time Yvonne had ever been this shameless. She was asking a man she'd only met twice to marry her. The situation was awkward, to say the least. She quickly tried to explain, "It's just a temporary measure. My father's will said Andrew would be my guardian until I came of age, and then I'd marry into the Lambert family. Once I turn 18, the lawyer will transfer the inheritance to me. "But now that Andrew has passed away, I'm not interested in getting into an arranged marriage. After I inherit my estate, we can call off the engagement. How about that?"William remaine

When William heard that Yvonne had already left, his hand that was holding his fork froze."How long ago did she leave?" he asked."It's been over two hours. She left before sunrise," Mary replied.Upon hearing this, William frowned. It was Saturday, so the school wasn't open. Where could she have gone? It must be inconvenient for her to move around, especially with her leg still not fully healed."Mr. Lambert, the meeting at the office is about to start," Matthew reminded him."Forget the meeting for now. Pull up the nearby surveillance footage and find out where she went," William instructed."You mean Ms. Sullivan?" Matthew said. "She didn't have much money on her. She probably went back to the Lambert family.""Call them.""Right away, Mr. Lambert."Matthew pulled out his phone and called the Lambert residence. After a brief conversation, he hung up and shook his head at William. "They asked when Ms. Sullivan would be returning."William set down his fork and said, "Sta

She didn't shoot a single reply to the messages he sent her.And now, she had even hung up on his call.Charles opened their chat again and sent her a message, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Call me back as soon as you see this!"He waited a full minute, but there was still no response. In the past, she would have called him back within three seconds of getting a message like that.Charles frowned deeply. What was Yvonne playing at now?…It was close to noon at the L Group branch office. While Yvonne was waiting in the lounge, her phone kept lighting up with message after message from Charles."Yvonne, are you still asleep?""Are you too sleepy to even answer my call? Yvonne was switching seats with Sophia! Most importantly, it was the seat next to Charles!"Yvonne! You…" Charles' expression soured instantly.Sophia, on the other hand, jumped at the chance. She eagerly swapped seats with Yvonne. "Sure! But don't regret it later!""Yvonne, who said you could change seats?" Charles stepped forward and grabbed her arm with a questioning glare. But Yvonne completely ignored him. She yanked her arm away and moved her belongings over to Sophia's desk.Sophia quickly took the seat beside Charles and said with a smirk, "Charles, Yvonne hurt her leg. Sitting in the back makes it easier for her to slack off. Don't make it harder for her."From kindergarten to high school, Yvonne had always been Charles' deskmate. And Charles had never sat next to any other girl. Now, Yvonne was handing over that spot for no reason. There was no way Sophia was going to pass it up.When Shawn returned to the classroom, he saw that Yvonne was now seated beside his desk.

"Don't be like that, Charles…" Tiffany tugged on Charles' sleeve before looking at Yvonne guiltily. "I'm sorry, Yvie. Charles didn't mean it like that. I was the one who was out of line.""Don't try to defend her! I know her better than you do—she's just jealous of you!" Charles frowned.Yvonne watched them echo each other's words as they stood there. Suddenly, she was reminded of her previous life.Back then, Charles and Tiffany had sat before her and thrown the divorce agreement at her. At the time, Charles' tone had been icy, and he'd looked like he was in a rush to sever ties with her. Meanwhile, Tiffany had tried to talk him into putting things nicely.Yet when Charles had stepped away briefly, Tiffany had gone into detail about how Charles had never forgotten her and had constantly contacted her.Only then did Yvonne realize her three-year marriage was a joke. We're over here!"Tiffany blushed at that, and Charles showed no sign of stopping his friend. The other guys in the class started cheering.Sophia's expression turned ugly when she heard that. "What are you guys even talking about? Aren't you afraid you'll scare her off?""Yeah, yeah. We all know you have a crush on Charles—just be frank and admit you're jealous! Don't act like you're actually worried we'll scare Tiffany off!""Exactly! It's only a matter of time, anyway. It was hard to believe some students still refused to do their homework at this juncture.Charles was left with no choice but to sit down. The literature teacher, Jessica Clark, had always been the strictest among all their teachers. It looked like he really wouldn't be going home that day if he couldn't finish the homework she'd assigned. He looked at the papers before him, feeling irritated. He didn't know why it was so important to do homework. As he started working on them, he had to stop for a minute for each question. He hadn't memorized any poems or sayings, nor did he know anything of the stories behind them. He'd never paid attention during class. One of the guys near him took pity on him and said, "This question is in our notes. Just check your notes and copy the answer.""Really?" Charles p

Yvonne didn't miss the flicker of glee in Tiffany's eyes. The latter concealed it almost immediately, but she was still too slow. She pretentiously stepped forward to hold Yvonne's hand and say, "Everyone's just joking around, Yvie. It's normal for friends to get mad at each other now and then, right? You… Don't tell me you took Charles seriously!""Exactly! We were just joking, Yvonne!""There's no need to take things so far!"The other guys realized how severe the situation was when they saw the look on Charles' face, but they didn't take things too seriously. After all, Yvonne had always been the one who'd given more than she'd gotten. They didn't think Charles had anything to lose by cutting ties with her."Fine, then. We're over." Charles clenched his fists. He didn't believe for a second that Yvonne would abandon him for Shawn.Tiffany couldn't suppress her delight anymore when she heard that. Before Shawn could raise a fist, everyone watched as Yvonne grabbed her hot water flask and made a beeline for Charles. With a loud splash, silence descended upon the room. Then, everyone gasped in unison, after which the only sound left was the steady dripping of water on the floor.Yvonne had drenched Charles in the hot water from her flask. Steam rose from his soaked clothes, and his face turned red."I can overlook you insulting me, but what makes you think you can insult Shawn?" Her tone was cold and devoid of any hint of love. She was acting the complete opposite of how she'd been in the past. The rest of the class didn't dare speak, afraid Yvonne would also splash them with scalding water."Charles!" Tiffany's voice came from outside the classroom. She'd brought Charles his breakfast—this was not the scene she'd expected to see. "Are you okay?
