RAPHAEL’S VIEW POINT

“Tell him that Igor Bortsov wants his beloved back.” I said calmly, making Giovanna’s head whip to me. She went wide eyed as she took in my exhausted self, proving that she knew nothing about my attack. I felt relieved, my fear of being alone in my relationship abolished. Giovanna rushed to me, touching my torso lightly while examining my face. I smiled warmly, her care making it seem like I was completely healed.

“Orsetto! What happened? Who did this to you?” She asked frantically, whipping around to who I supposed was her brother.

“Were you the one, Pietro?”

“No.” He replied simply, studying me intently. He was a middle aged man with already balding hair, having dark features, just like Giovanna, and putting on a cheerful expression, even though I knew he wanted me dead. From the argument I had heard them having, Giovanna had apparently gone away from home to be with me. I wasn’t one to support improper behaviours but she was running from a life of crime and deceit. I couldn’t blame her.

“Of course, you look like this. Does he only own shirts from Louis Vuitton as well?” He commented with a laugh, making Giovanna speak up. although offended that he saw me as a typical French fuck-boy, I brushed off the thought

“At least he’s not ugly like you.” She shot, making me chuckle despite the tense moment. He glared at her before shifting the harsh stare to me.

“How did you get like this?” He expressed concern from my injuries in a very nonchalant manner. Giovanna smacked his tummy but turned to me with puppy eyes. I smiled at that, finding it attractive how she switched expressions so quickly.

“You don’t have to explain anything to him. Talk to me instead. But first, have a seat, my love.” She said sweetly and led me to sit down. I slowly did, my body still aching from the punches. I considered not telling her about the Russians and talking to her father directly, but if she was in trouble, she needed to know to be careful.

“The Russian mafia did this.” I let out despite my fears of being taken as a fool.

“You told him about our family?!” Pietro exclaimed, already stressed about my knowledge on who they were. Giovanna rolled her eyes but urged me to continue, wanting to know the full story.

“I was attacked in the parking garage of the hotel. They told me to tell your father something.” I stated simply, making her gasp. She looked at her brother with fear rather than disdain for once, something foreign on her features. Usually, Giovanna was calm and collected, only ever being frantic when she had to run from authority. I wasn’t used to seeing her so scared. It worried me a bit. Pietro’s laugh however, made me doubt that something was wrong.

“Well I’ll be damned. The Russian mafia has a message for father. That old man finally caused more trouble than he can handle.”

“Aren’t the Spanish still on his neck?” Giovanna asked worriedly, making Pietro nod.

“Yes. He’s wanted by the Chinese as well. That man puts our lives in danger for gratification.” Pietro laughed, taking his phone out of his pocket and dialling a number before going out to answer it. When he left, I looked at Giovanna, who was staring worriedly at me. We remained speechless for several minutes before she broke the quiet.

“I always wanted to tell you, Ralph. I just didn’t know how to explain it to you. Now that you’re involved in it, it’s going to be much more complicated” She admitted lowly, slowly making her way into my lap.

“Baby, it’s okay. I understand. It doesn’t change who you are to me, and how much I love you” I told her, meaning every word. Giovanna was worth running from a mafia for. I realized that I didn’t want to leave her, despite the trouble being with her was going to cause. I was an adrenaline junkie anyway, and not at all afraid of death. I only feared for my family and Giovanna.

“Are you sure, Ralph? The cartel is no joke. My father has killed a lot of people and I’ve become so accustomed to death that it barely phases me.” She informed me, cupping my cheek in her hand. I leaned into her touch, its effects warming my heart. I didn’t even pay mind to the fact that she had just told me she was a potential murderer. Her presence was intoxicating. Addicting too. I wanted to love her so well that she forgot about the chaos in her life when she was with me. My goal in life was to make her as calm as she made me. That was all I lived for now; Giovanna’s glorification.

“I am. I’ll go to the ends of the earth for you, Gia.” I told her truthfully, kissing her lips passionately. She wrapped her arms around my neck and deepened the kiss, her lips moulding perfectly into mine. I sighed, glad I still had her with me.

“I love you, Mr. Yves.” She said against my lips, pulling away to look at me with admiration. I gave the same expression, taking her soft lips once more. Almost immediately, we were broken apart by Pietro interrupting our moment. I kept her close to me but paid attention to him, wanting to know the next action to take. I figured they were going to leave me alone after the message was delivered, so I didn’t worry.

“I can’t say I’m happy with you marrying outside our lifestyle, Gia.” A gruff voice spoke, making Giovanna wrap her arms tightly around me. I couldn’t see who was speaking, but from the tone of his voice and his cultural profiling, I suppose he was her father.

“I love him, papa and he loves me too. He faced the Russian mafia for me.” She complained, clutching my head tightly. I remained quiet, trying to read the situation as it progressed.

“I’m afraid I can’t let you be with him. He is not experienced in our ways of life. If all comes to worst and I die, who will take care of the business?” He reasoned, making my eyes crack open a bit, thankfully hidden by Giovanna’s chest. I shrugged off the feeling of impending danger that fogged my mind, knowing she was never going to, since her brother was also going to run the family business instead.

“Pietro is more than capable!” She yelled with a shaky voice, not wanting to let go. I, on the other hand, just realized that Giovanna was in fact bad news, and all the talk about loving her despite her past was shit at this point.

“Yes, but you’re my baby girl. You never disappoint me- except now.” He stated, laughing. I was panicking under Giovanna, who had followed her father through a dark tunnel of humour. I just saw the future in front of my face, the police arresting them and I used an accomplice in seconds. I didn’t need the drama or danger, no matter how much I loved Giovanna. It was better to be heartbroken than dead.

“What message did Igor Bortsov have for my father?” Giovanna asked, pulling away to look down at me. I tried to hide the fear in my eyes but failed woefully. She looked forward at her brother, who also noticed the discomfort on my face. We stayed in silence for a few seconds before he sighed and reached behind him. For what felt like the tenth time today, a gun was pointed at me. After my crazy morning, I wasn’t even phased. I knew he wasn’t going to make the shot if Giovanna was seated in my lap, for fear that he’d hurt her.

“Pietro, what are you doing?” She yelled at the older man, not even scared of the weapon in his hand.

“He’s a liability. If Bortsov wants any kind of information from him, he’ll crack. We can’t risk being exposed because of someone you think you love.” Her father explained, making me sigh in exhaustion. I wanted to be excluded from this more than anyone else. It wasn’t something I found amusing nor did I support any of it. Dealing drugs and coordinating illegal activities was wrong, no matter who did it.

“I do love Raphael, papa! Give me a chance to convince him. Just a few days.” She pleaded, even clambering out of my lap to the floor so she could beg, on her knees. Pietro looked to be in thought before he lowered his gun from me, staring at his sister on the floor. I was dumbfounded, only remaining quiet and watching the family interact, as I didn’t want to say anything that would get me killed; especially since I was now vulnerable.

“You’ve never begged before, Gia. You usually scream like a bitch until you get what you want.” Pietro laughed, using his gun to scratch his stubble.

“Three days. We’re going back to Italia with or without him.” He instructed, snatching his phone from the table. Giovanna got up slowly and nodded, moving toward her brother. It happened so fast, I didn’t catch it. I only saw Pietro clutching his cheek in pain before he recoiled to give a slap back to Giovanna. My fatigued body moved before my brain did and I took Giovanna into my arms, saving her from harm’s way. Pietro might have had a gun but I definitely had bodily advantage. I stood protectively in front of Giovanna, assuring her safety even though I was beyond disappointed in her from keeping this crucial detail of her life from me. But if I was being honest, I would have continued our relationship if she had told me beforehand. And even now, I couldn’t imagine being away from her as much as I tried. Which was why I was faced nose to nose with a gun, glaring at the person that held it.

“And who the fuck does this French boy think he is?” Pietro spat, still not shooting but having a very firm grip on the handle.

“Leave. Right now, or I’ll kick your ass.” I warned, making his hand shake in annoyance before he slowly let down the gun and glaring harshly at the sound of his father’s voice.

“Make sure you come home with him, Gia.” Giovanna’s father said to no one in particular but Giovanna gripped my shirt tightly and pulled me away from the steaming Pietro. I wasn’t angry, but so much adrenaline was flowing through my body, I was sure I was going to knock his teeth in, if given the chance. Also, I needed someone to take out the aggression from this morning. If he made one threatening gesture to my fiancée, I was going to mess him up.

“I apologize for my children’s behaviour. They’re so spoilt, they don’t know how to act around strangers.” The older man said. I ignored him, keeping an eye on Giovanna’s crazy brother. He huffed and spat on the floor before walking past me, and out of my home. I turned around to Giovanna, looking at her teary eyes. She was scared, I could see. I found myself being equally as terrified when my adrenaline levels came down and reality dawned on me.

“I’m so sorry, Orsetto. I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.” She whimpered, holding my face in her hands. I wasted no time pulling her into my arms and hugging her tightly, not wanting to think about all of this but spend precious time holding my darling, while I could.

  • Marrying Into The Mafia   CHAPTER THREE

RAPHAEL’S VIEW POINT Giovanna and I went about our day without speaking. We couldn’t even look at each other when we separated from the brief hug we shared after Pietro had left. I sought refuge in the library while she occupied the bedroom, most likely waiting for me to come in. I didn’t want to, so I tried very hard to sleep comfortably on the couch where I was. There was a blanket and a throw pillows here, all I needed to rest until I could gather my thoughts. My plan unfortunately failed after I woke up to stiff joints and an aching neck. I had no other choice than to go back upstairs. I had two guest rooms, but the beds were still wrapped in nylon since my move last month and I didn’t have the energy to take them off tonight. I carefully opened the door to the bedroom, hoping Giovanna was asleep. Fortunately, she wasn’t even in bed. I peeked inside and scanned around, seeing the space empty. Not sure if she was in the ensuite bathroom, I went to t

RAPHAEL’S VIEW POINTGiovanna and I came out after the whole office had been deserted. True to my word, she wasn’t able to walk on her own after our erotic session. Mascara was running down her face and she refused to let me wipe it, saying any touch from me would result in us staying till the next morning, and she was exhausted. I was too, but the idea of fucking Giovanna again brought shivers to my spine and a burst of adrenaline to flow through out my body.“Don’t give me that look.” She laughed when I showed her the ruined dress she had worn here. I laughed and placed it in the bin, taking off my jacket for her. She accepted it and covered up, needing to lean on my table for support. I regarded her makeshift outfit when she was done, impressed by how simple, yet daringly sexy it was. What made it better was seeing the faint bruises on her thighs and the love bites on her chest. She handed her purse to me and took my arm, steadyin

  • Marrying Into The Mafia   CHAPTER FIVE

RAPHAEL’S VIEW POINT “Hello, Mr. Yves.” Giovanna made her presence known, standing in the doorway with a sultry posture. I spared her a glance and hummed in response, turning back to my computer. I was engrossed in my work and wasn’t in the mood for any strenuous activities- What was I saying? This was Giovanna for God’s sake. Even if I was bed-ridden, I would still strive to pleasure her the best way I could. I sighed outwardly when I finally accepted that I was angry with her for pushing all this on me. I loved Giovanna and wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, but a cartel was not a joke. Undoubtedly, we were going to be subjected to danger at some point. And we couldn’t forget about the Russian mafia that had attacked me merely four days ago. It was all too much, too fast, and she didn’t even seem interested in my feelings concerning the situation. “I'm very sure you heard me, Raphael.” Giovanna said lowly, obviously offended by my lack of interest. I hum

  • Marrying Into The Mafia   CHAPTER SIX

RAPHAEL’S VIEW POINTThe flight to Italy comprised Giovanna and Pietro arguing about who got to see their father first while I had stayed silent, partially lost in my thoughts and listening to their conversation. Apparently, Mr. Donatello was a very reserved man, only permitting two visitors at a time when he wasn’t in their villa, and that rule was not restricted to family. He had them patted down and ran through security measures before they were taken to where he worked, doing what I supposed were illegal activities. Although they claimed not to directly participate in such, it was very hard to believe after my encounter with Igor Bortsov and his mafia. I was still sceptical about what was going to happen to me. I was more than sure this wasn’t just an average introduction. I was surely going to be threatened again and from my experience with the cases my father had brought home, I wouldn’t be able to make it out alive.“W

  • Marrying Into The Mafia   CHAPTER SEVEN

RAPHAEL’S VIEW POINT We walked a distance from their private airport to the main building, where her father was waiting. I was nervous to meet him, seeing that he was a mafia leader. The fear faded when I was reassured by Giovanna’s hand holding my bicep for comfort. It made me feel safe and loved. Even during hard times, like now, when her aunties were probing me to feel my torso and insisting that I took off my shirt. I was uncomfortable, and Giovanna was deeply irritated, but there was no stopping the drunken trio when they were determined to take advantage of someone half their ages. They giggled about invading my personal space, slurring swears under their breaths and hissing when they managed to get a feel. Stella looked gravely disappointed but watched anyway while I struggled to cook up a nice way to tell the aunties to fuck off. Thankfully, Pietro came to announce that his father was ready to see us, and took time to put the sisters in their places. He seemed to be the only o

  • Marrying Into The Mafia   CHAPTER EIGHT

RAPHAEL’S VIEW POINT Waking up with Giovanna in my arms never felt different, yet the sensation never got old. Her body was always pressed against mine and our hearts would always beat in the same rhythm. Her hair always smelled like heaven, and her expression was always peaceful. What made me want to happily scream into a pillow was that she was much more relaxed than when she slept without me. I liked noticing the difference and knowing that only I could provide utmost comfort for her. I observed everything about her. From what her frantic blinks meant, to her breathing when we were alone, to how she thought; even most of her next moves. I could predict Giovanna to-the-tee. I knew that she was going to wake up soon and ask if staring at her was that interesting. I loved being confident that I knew everything about her that she had to say. “Is staring at me that interesting?” She mumbled, her eyes still closed. I smiled, reaching to take her lips. She grinned into t

  • Marrying Into The Mafia   CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

RAPHAEL’S VIEW POINT.Natalie, Gaia and I had a long chat before Giovanna arrived. We had been talking about our childhoods’ most embarrassing experiences and laughing about how immature we had been. Gaia had had the most adventurous, and made Natalie and I laugh so much that our stomachs hurt. I had checked on Annie a few times during the conversation and she had been fast asleep, until the moment Giovanna came into the home and announced her presence. A confused “Annie?” followed by an excited “Gia!” could be heard before the two began conversing. Gaia, having no idea Giovanna was coming, perked up in excitement. I went to freshen up in a washroom I had found while searching for Gaia, before deciding to wait in the kitchen for her, knowing I wasn’t going to be able to keep myself calm in front of others. I had disposed of my façade near Gaia but I wasn’t going to let down my guard until I could confirm her trustworthiness.“You’re not going to see her?” Natalie asked when Gaia had

  • Marrying Into The Mafia   CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

RAPHAEL’S VIEW POINT.We arrived at the address after visiting the hospital and being told Dr Desroches wasn’t working today. I parked beside a familiar Donatello style SUV, seeing a modern home in a reserved neighbourhood. I inspected the area to make sure we weren’t followed and turned back to Annie, who was fast asleep on the suitcase, looking peaceful in her slumber. I smiled at her in awe, admiring how at ease she was despite our current situation. I was wanted by my fiancée’s father. But it seemed like life didn’t get better than that when being associated with the Donatello family. I couldn’t paint a picture where the odds were in my favour in this whole chaos of a relationship with Giovanna’s family. I looked away from Annie finally, turning to Officer Berrien in expectation of orders from my father. I assumed she was working for my father to keep Annie safe, and not help me get through this mess. “Please help me with the suitcases in the boot. I’ll take Annie.” I told Offi

  • Marrying Into The Mafia   CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

RAPHAEL’S VIEW POINTThe world seemed to stop when Annie dropped lifelessly to the floor. My head went blank and blood rushed to my ears, blocking out every sound that didn’t tell me Annie was alive. When I didn’t get a single signal after a few seconds, I was in complete denial. I found myself wondering how and why my instinct had let me down now when it had never done so before. I was about to run carelessly to hold her in my arms but it seemed God had been on my side. A man dropped down after her, blood spilling from the hole in his head. Reading the situation and realizing there was still hope, I felt my senses perk up again, a new confidence in myself being discovered. In that split moment before the man had come to sight, my life had flashed before my eyes. I had judged my every decision, except not marrying Giovanna. If the supposed death of my sister wasn’t enough reason to leave her, I knew I was fighting for the right cause. I found myself grinning despite having killed a

  • Marrying Into The Mafia   CHAPTER TWENTY

RAPHAEL’S VIEW POINTAnnie and I watched Giovanna get into a mysterious black jeep, seeing strange men surrounding it. As quickly as they had come, they disappeared into their respective vehicles and zoomed off into the day. I let out a sigh, wondering how to put this simply so my father didn’t get angry. I could tell him about Annie helping out first so he got angry before I could deliver the worse news. Or was it good news first? Was there even good news? My life could be ended and it wasn’t the most terrifying possibility. I only wanted to get married to the woman of my dreams. These dangerous circumstances weren’t at all in the plan. “Daddy?” I heard Annie say and my head whipped to the wide, seeing her grinning while she spoke on the phone. I knew she was intelligent but being this far ahead of me with her thoughts was genius. I was considered quite cunning and a quick thinker myself; much more than the average person, so it made Annie’s abilities almost superhuman. I wondered

SERGIO’S VIEW POINTThree days ago, I had gotten permission from my daughter to use her fiancé as a negotiator and temporary consigliere. I had to say, I wasn’t too happy to have had suck up to the revolting yet fascinating man. I was an honest man, so I couldn’t lie to either of them about my plans. Luckily, I had been able to keep my intentions private and expose only a small part of the full story. The only person aware of the entire hoax was Isabella, who was a questionable ally, having spent so much time with Igor. She had escaped his possession three weeks ago, which shortly after Yves had been attacked by Igor. It had been a measly and very shallow execution of strength and display of lack of fear, but it had somehow had a great effect on my business. And knowing Igor, there was absolutely no way he or his men had discovered Giovanna’s importance from surveillance; so it made me wonder if Isabella knew about her and had told Igor. Even Mr. Clever French boy hadn’t figured it o

  • Marrying Into The Mafia   CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

RAPHAEL’S VIEW POINT I was visibly happy when I stepped back into the house. The thought in my head was a simple one; “I'm going to marry Giovanna”. It was all I could think about. The conclusion came before the slightest decisions. It affected my reasoning in a way I felt was positive because anything I did always led back to the thought that I was doing it for Giovanna. That I was growing for her and slowly morphing into a spouse she would see as perfect. I had an idea of what she thought about me now. I knew she regarded me highly, but I wanted to be her everything, just as she was mine. Which was why, when I saw her standing with Blossom and Belle while Annie made them rehearse her lines for her play tomorrow, I pulled her into my arms and gave her a loving kiss. I hoped to be able to do this for the rest of our lives. “Leave my supporting character alone!” Annie yelled, stomping her foot while Giovanna smiled at me. “That’s a first. Are you in a better mood than usual?” She

ANNIE’S VIEW POINT.Giovanna was a better cook than I expected. She chopped vegetables at chef speed and accuracy, being completely focused with her quantities. She measured everything, down to water. I was surprised she was this conservative when making meals. She seemed like a carefree person that went where the wind took her, but she was different now. Like a whole new person. I appreciated that she was serious with making food for my brother, but I had to know why she was acting like her life depended on its perfection. “Hey, Gia?” I called, seeing her look over her shoulder while stirring ingredients for the jambalaya. She smiled warmly, leaving the other pot of potatoes to boil and placing a lid over it. She turned and wiped her hands on the towel she kept in the pocket of the apron she insisted on wearing even though this was a casual meal. She had also insisted on making a three course meal from the start and despite the time limit we had, and the assumed impossibility to do s

  • Marrying Into The Mafia   CHAPTER SIXTEEN

GIOVANNA’S VIEW POINTI adored the relationship between members of this family. There wasn’t a sense of professionalism as there was with mine. They were homely and nice, not even bickering for fun. They minded one another’s feelings and were so familiar with themselves that they had inside jokes with each person that others didn’t know. Ralph and Annie had the most, as they laughed so much together, that they were often out of breath. I had never seen my fiancé so at ease before. I could tell by the way he acted that he was in a room full of the people he loved the most. It melted my heart to see him so happy. I wished we could stay like this forever. It was a stark contrast to how he was around members of my family. He always seemed put together and guarded, like he was with some of his business partners. I was sure it was because they had made a terrible first impression with my fiancé. My mother had been completely embarrassed by her sisters, my father had attempted to make him a
