The party portion of the day starts. No matter the differences between Latinos and Russians, they both enjoy a good party. The music starts, drinks are distributed among guests, people chat and dance cheerfully. Everyone around us is having a good time.
Dimitri hasn’t said a word to me since we said I do. I haven’t tried to speak with him either. I just look at him out of the corner of my eye expecting for him to acknowledge my presence in any way. Whatever he is thinking about, it consumes his whole attention. We take a seat on the table for two specially reserved for the bride and groom in front of the small dance floor. A waiter comes, he offers us two glasses of champagne. I take mine, but the second I do Dimitri takes it away from me.
“I don’t want a drunk wife,” he says curtly.
“Having a glass of champagne doesn’t make me a drunk wife,” I protest with a frown on my face. Who does he think he is? I try to take the glass from his hand, but he pulls it further away.
“I said no,” he states firmly.
“You can’t control what I drink,” I say using his same tone of voice so he knows he can’t intimidate me, even though deep inside I am intimidated.
Dimitri turns his eyes to me, his piercing gaze leaves no room for protest. Dimitri looks daggers at me as he leans over the table towards me, he is so close that I can smell his cologne; it is a pleasant scent, I would enjoy it more if he wasn't gazing at me with such threatening eyes.
“You’ll be surprised by all the things I can control about you. You are mine, after all,” he says with a threatening tone that makes me shiver.
My mouth feels dry, I say nothing back. I’m too shocked by his words. I am his? We might be married, but that doesn’t make me anyone’s property.
“Bring her a coke,” Dimitri tells the waiter.
He complies immediately and hands me a coke.
“It’s not diet,” I say refusing to take the drink.
“Bring the princess a diet coke,” Dimitri says rolling his eyes. “You know, I don’t like difficult girls,” he says the second the waiter brings me a diet coke.
“And I don’t like to be married to a possessive criminal,” I say with acid in my voice.
He laughs at my remark, but it’s not a happy laugh, it’s more of a sardonic noise. Then he takes me by the chin to force me to look him straight in the eyes. “You have quite a mouth, don’t you? I think I’m going to have to put you in your place.”
I gulp, his blue eyes are filled with danger and the promise that he won’t let this slide. My hands start shaking, I just met Dimitri and I already find him to be the most intimidating person I have ever encounter. I can’t believe I’m going to spend the rest of my life with this man. I try to move my head to the other side, but Dimitri tightens his grip.
“Let me go,” I mutter with a trembling voice.
“Say please,” he replies.
“Please…”
He releases me with a smirk. I feel goosebumps all over my body. He can’t treat me like this, I need to put a stop to this situation, but just when I am about to say something his father approaches our table by the arm of a young beautiful girl that looks like she belongs on the cover of a fashion magazine. She must be around my age although she seems wiser and more mature than I. It’s as if she has lived more than me this past 20 years, maybe she has because I haven’t done much, I’m just a girl that likes to chill and spent time with her friends and family, this girl seems worldly.
“Son, congratulations, you are a married man now!” Nikolay says as he gives his son a congratulatory hug. Dimitri says nothing, he just sighs and then pulls away. “And congratulations to you too, Victoria,” Nikolay then says to me.
I nod awkwardly. Why is he congratulating me? He and my father forced this marriage upon me!
The tall blonde girl beside Nikolay leans over me and puts her thin arms around me.
“Congratulations, new sister!” She says with a wide sincere grin.
“Victoria, as you might have already guessed, this is my little sister Irina,” Dimitri says.
“It is a pleasure to meet you, Irina,” I lie.
“I am so happy to finally meet you! I am sure we are going to be very good friends!” Irina says enthusiastically.
“I am sure we will,” I mutter knowing in my heart that we won’t.
“Where is my mother?” Dimitri asks.
By the awkward look on Nikolay’s and Irina’s faces, I can tell there is something going on with the mother, but they are too uncomfortable to say it out loud.
“The high heels hurt her feet, she is resting,” Irina mutters.
“She will come to her senses, she’ll change her mind with time…” Nikolay says under his breath.
“She won’t…” Dimitri says shaking his head.
“Forget about it. This is a party! Let’s celebrate!” Nikolay says dismissing what his son just said.
What do they mean she will come to her senses? Of course, I won’t ask Dimitri anything about it. First of all, I don’t really care and second of all, he, in this short period we have been together, has shown me that he is a douche. The less contact we have, the better.
After the Ivanovs leave our table, my family comes to congratulate us. I turn to the other side when my father tries to kiss me on the cheek, this is all his fault, I won’t forgive him so easily. My mother and sister look a little bit melancholic, but they are trying to hide their feelings under a thin smile. Dimitri shakes everyone’s hand with coldness and a gesture of indifference.
“Welcome to the family, Dimitri,” my mother says to him. I can tell saying these words was hard for her.
“Thank you,” Dimitri replies curtly.
The party continues, our guests drink and celebrate not carrying about the fact that the bride and groom are seated with their arms folded looking annoyed to be here. After a while, the wedding planner approaches our table.
“It’s time for your first dance,” she says with a smile.
I furrow my brow. “I don’t think we are doing that today…” I reply.
“What are you talking about? Of course we are,” Dimitri says as he takes my hand.
I look at him surprised. He wants us to dance?
“I rather not. I am not a good dancer,” I lie. It’s not that I can’t dance, I just don’t feel like doing it with him, not after the way he has behave this past few hours we have known each other.
“It’s a tradition, we have to play along,” he reminds me. I shake my head. Dimitri leans to my ear and whispers. “This is not a request, Victoria.”
I gulp. How can he be so intimidating with just a a few words? I get up from my seat, driven by fear. Dimitri then takes me to the dance floor, a romantic ballad starts to play as the guests look at us attentively. I put my hands on his shoulders and we start to dance to the music. He is so tall my forehead barely reaches his chin. Dimitri is holding me by the waist, his head is leaning towards me and so my hair brushes his cheek.
“You are not a bad dancer,” he remarks. “I think you were just lying.”
“Maybe I was,” I mutter.
Dimitri takes my hand and makes me twirl like a ballerina. He smiles and for a second he looks like a decent human being. Someone in the crowd yells “Kiss your wife!” Dimitri smiles and leans to kiss me. I kiss him back not wanting to make a scene in front of all our guests. His lips feel soft and sweet, it’s like they don’t belong to the scary man behind them. The guests clap, I give my husband a thin smile as he straightens his back.
After our dance, we go back to our table. Short before midnight Dimitri puts his arm on mine and squeezes gently.
“It is time to go,” he informs me.
My heart sinks to my stomach. This is it, now I’ll leave my home to go live with a man I barely know. Cold sweat runs down my back. We get up from our seats, I go up to my room and take the suitcase I prepared for this moment. I take off my wedding dress and I put on a simple pink dress I bought with Jenny at a mall a while back.
“You are leaving already?” Jenny asks standing under the doorframe of my bedroom.
“Yes, I guess it’s time for us to go,” I say unconvinced but trying my best to hide the fear I feel from my little sister. She is already sad enough that I am going to move out, I don’t want to burden her with more sorrow.
“I’ll walk with you to the car,” she says dejectedly. Then her eyes sparkle with a mischievous look. “Hey, at least mom was right, your new husband is hot!”
I laugh at her remark before I roll my eyes. Then I just nod. It’s pointless to let her know that I don’t care if he is the most handsome guy on the planet. This marriage is an imposition and I resent him for that.
We go downstairs. Our families are waiting for us in the foyer. Next to Nikolay and Irina stands a tall middle-aged woman with blond hair turning grey, she is beautiful and moves with elegance, I guess she is Dimitri’s mother.
“Are you ready?” Dimitri asks as he takes my suitcase and hands it to who I assume is his driver. Then he leans to my ear and whispers. “Give your parents a big goodbye hug, Victoria, who knows when you’ll see them again.”
I open my eyes wide with surprise at the sound of his words. What does he mean by that? I feel a chill down my spine, my only comfort in all of this was the idea that I was going to stay close to my family and suddenly it appears as if Dimitri is taking that possibility away from me. Where is he taking me? Why won’t I see them for a long time? I have so many questions that I don’t dare to ask out loud. I stare at him baffled and Dimitri just replies with an I’m warning you stare. My parents didn’t hear him, so they don’t know what’s going on. I rather not tell them, it is pointless to worry them when I don’t even know what is happening right now. I turn around and I say goodbye to my family. Tears well up but I blink them away. I have to be strong.
“My girl, I love you so much,” my mother says with eyes filled with sorrow.
“Call as soon as you get to your new home,” Jenny says to me.
“I will,” I reply with a fake smile.
I can’t explain why, but I have a feeling that I won’t be able to call her or anyone else. I can’t shake the feeling that I am headed towards the lion’s den.
We then go out of my parent’s house, I find that five black SUVs are waiting for us outside. Each SUV has a driver that awaits by the vehicle for the passengers to go in. Irina, Dimitri’s mother, and Nikolay hop on one of the SUVs. Other guests from the party, who I assume are Dimitri’s relatives because they all look alike, hop on the other three SUVs, leaving the last one for Dimitri and me.“Thank you, Oleg,&rdq
I squeeze my little black purse anxiously while I follow my husband upstairs to the main bedroom. Once I am in, I look around nervously without actually seeing something in particular, I’m so anxious I’m unable to pay attention to the room or what is in it, I’m even having trouble breathing. Bolt enters right behind us.“Out!” Dimitri yells and I startle. The dog obeys instantly again, leaving us alone in the room. My mouth feels dry and my palms are sweating.“Victoria, do you understand that as my wife you have certain… duties?” Dimitri asks without looking at me.I nod, my eyes fixed to the floor. I’m terrified of what is coming. It’s no
As soon as we get into the house I put my back against the nearest wall and as far as possible from Dimitri, he is not even paying attention to me, his eyes are fixed to the living room.“Hello, glad you could make it,” he says to someone I can’t see.I turn my face to the living room. Standing in the middle next to the coffee table is a robust tall woman with brown hair, rosy cheeks, and small round eyes, the woman is looking at us with a earnest expression on her face.“It is my pleasure, Mr. Ivanov,” the woman says with a deep voice.“Victoria, this is Ms. Margaret, she has come to take care of you,” Dimitri says.
After showing me around, Margaret takes me back to our house. Unfortunately, instead of just dropping me off and get going, she comes inside the house with me.“Let’s see what’s in the pantry so we can start making dinner,” she suggests.“Don’t he has people that can cook for us?” I ask folding my arms.I am sure someone as rich a Dimitri has plenty of people to help out with household chores, he can’t expect for me to act like a Stepford Wife.“I’m afraid Dimitri doesn’t like to have strange people in his house, he enjoys his privacy, so you are going to have to handle the house by yourself,” she informs me.“What
When I open my eyes, it’s already morning. It takes me a few seconds to remember where I am. I sink my head in the pillow before looking up. Dimitri is not on his side of the bed. Suddenly, the bathroom door opens and Dimitri comes out completely naked. I turn my face to the other side, my cheeks are red as tomatoes. Of all the things I thought about how my husband would look like before my wedding, I never expected him to be this fine. I mean, even with his clothes on it’s obvious that he is ripped, but without them, you can really appreciate every muscle and every curve. Not even in my wildest dreams, I thought Dimitri would be so handsome or that he would make me feel this aroused. He starts to get dressed, totally unaware of how I feel.“What time does Margaret said she would get here?” Dimitri asks me as he puts on his shoes.
(Dimitri P.O.V.)I take another sip of my vodka, I am aware that it is too early to be drinking, but I really need it. My nerves are killing me, I feel on the edge. This whole situation with my marriage is overwhelming and I have proven to be unable to control it.I still can’t process what happened on our wedding night or, better said, what almost happened, I feel disgusted with myself for the way I acted. What was I thinking? I know the whole point of Victoria being my wife is for us to have children together to straighten our dominion over Javier Solis and his mafia, and at some point, I’m going to have to sleep with her, but I’m not a freaking rapist! Just thinking about it makes my skin crawl. Although it also annoys me how much the memory of that night affects me, I hate that I feel a pang of guilt every tim
(Victoria’s P.O.V.)I walk along with Margaret back to my house; although I don’t entirely consider it mine yet. In spite of what Margaret says about me being the lady of the house, I don’t feel that way. In my mind, I’m just a guest here. This place is not my home, it’s just a place I live in now against my will. As we walk I hear someone calling my name, I turn around and find Irina running toward us. She is so gracious even when she runs, she is like a Barbie doll in real life, her golden hair shines against the sun beams and hey blue eyes sparkle like diamonds. Even though her face is reddened due to the effort of running, she still looks gorgeous.“Victoria, wait!” She says as she reaches us. “I am so sorry about the way my mother behaved today. She has no excuse. I feel terrible that you
Two weeks have gone by since I got married to Dimitri Ivanov. I am as unhappy as I was the first day, at least Dimitri hasn’t tried to have sex with me since our wedding night, which I guess is something to be thankful for. On the other hand, my husband hasn’t allowed me to talk to my family because he is punishing me for trying to smash the telephone against his head and I really resent him for it. Luckily, he is not around the house much, he spends most days out, I don’t know if my husband does this to avoid me, all I know is that I appreciate it when he is not around, I prefer to be alone in this big house than with him. Although the truth is that even when he is home, we barely speak to each other and when we do we get into big fights where we both yell until one of us storms out. I hate him and he hates me. That’s just the way things are between us and the less we talk, the better.
When I open my eyes I find myself in a white room. It takes me a few seconds to realize I am in a hospital. Beside my bed, seated on a couch, Dimitri sleeps while his mother knits with a worried expression on her face. I clear my throat to let them know I am awoken. The sound causes Anastasia to look up. She jumps up from her seat to reach me, the movement wakes Dimitri who does the same.“Victoria, how do you feel?” Anastasia asks, her concern for my well being is disconcerting.“I am fine… what happened?” I ask with a weak voice.“Don’t you remember? You got in the way of a bullet that was meant for me!” Dimitri replies arching his eyebrows. “You were lucky the bullet hit your arm. Now your biggest concern is going to
We go back inside the cave. The first person we see is Kirill.“What are you doing here?” Dimitri asks.“Did you thought I was going to let you have all the fun? No way! Once you started to act weird I decided to follow you,” Kirill explains.Dimitri shakes his head with disapproval, and then he gives his cousin a hug.“Thank you, Kirill, you saved my life,” he says gratefully.“Anytime, cousin.” Kirril says as he winks at Dimitri.“Can you cut it out with sentimentalities?! This isn’t over!” Nikolay shouts.
Lucas comes into the cave accompanied by four other men. The five of them carry rifles and are wearing bulletproof vests. Lucas’s eyes meet mine, I try to convey to him all my hatred and disdain with just one glare. Shame crosses his face for the briefest moment and then he goes hide behind some barrels along with the other men. This is an ambush, Dimitri doesn’t stand a chance. Tatiana puts a gag in my mouth so I can’t warn Dimitri of what is going on.“I won’t allow you to ruin another one of my plans,” she whispers to my ear. She then takes out a dagger and presses it against my neck. She is pressing so hard the metal hurts my skin.We hear the sound of footsteps. A few seconds later Dimitri crosses the arch that accesses the cave. Vincent and the hidden men point at him with their guns, although Dimit
(Victoria’s P.O.V.)My head is killing me, I open my eyes slowly. It takes me a while to focus, my vision is blurry. Once I am able to see what’s around me I draw my breath in. Vincent and Tatiana are looking straight at me, they regard me with disdain and hate.“Look at that! The latin princess has finally woken! Good, I thought she was going to miss all the fun!” Vincent exclaims with a wicked smile.I remember hearing his voice, he is one of the men that forced me inside the van, he was wearing a ski mask. He kidnaped me! Cold sweat runs down my back as I realize how vulnerable I am right now. I am tied up to a chair, so tight that the ropes hurt my flesh. I look around me, we are in some sort of cave. I am cold or maybe it’s my fear that is causing me to shiver. Several lamps hang from the
(Victoria P.O.V.)I wait all morning to hear from Dimitri, he doesn’t come to get me or call the hotel to let me know what happened after he confronted Tatiana. I wonder how things went with Tatiana and how the family took the news. I smile a little imagining Anastasia’s face when she found out her precious Tatiana was not so perfect after all. I am a little sorry I missed it, but I am glad that I stayed here away from the drama. Hopefully, now that the truth is out the Ivanov gang is going to be able to stop the Esposito gang and the attacks will cease.Suddenly, the phone rings. I pick it up, it’s the front desk, they have a message from Dimitri, he says to meet him at the French restaurant that is across the street.I smile, I guess he is in the mood to celebrate, although it is kind of early to have d
(Dimitri P.O.V.)I drive like a maniac back to the complex. I am fuming. If what Victoria said is the truth I am the biggest idiot on the planet. I always had the feeling that there was someone else between me and Tatiana, but Vincent Esposito? This is too much. The humiliation is too big. I guess she was wise to fake her death because if I had known the truth I would have sought revenge and I wouldn’t have stopped until I killed Vincent.Once I get to the residential complex I go straight to my house, I run upstairs to the empty room, it takes me about two minutes to find the loose floorboard Victoria was talking about. I lift it and look inside, the box with the letters is here, just like my wife said. I feel my stomach burning with rage.I take out the box out and start reading the letters. Every word feels like a
“What the heck do you think you are doing?” Dimitri asks angrily as he storms into the hotel room“How did you find me?” I ask perplexed as I move to the side.“I saw your lame goodbye note and I started looking frenetically for you. I tried to call you but your cellphone was inside the trashcan. After a while, one of the drivers admitted he took you to this hotel. Victoria, what are you doing here? What are you planning to do?” He asks with a scowl on his face.“I am leaving the country,” I reply trying to make it sound normal.“Leaving the country? What are you talking about?!” He inquires with a confused expression on his face. “Where do you plan to go?”
Someone knocks on the door. For a moment I think it's Dimitri, but then I realize he wouldn’t knock to come into his own house, he would just open the door. I get up the floor and I get the door. Outside I find Anastasia. She lets herself in as if she owned the house.“What do you want?” I ask, my voice shakes, my eyes are reddened from all the crying and she is the last person I want to see right now.“I need to talk to you,” she replies as she takes a seat in the living room and then gestures for me to come to sit next to her. “I was thinking about my attitude from before and I realize that I was very rude to you. What is said was hurtful and I regret it, but it doesn’t make it less true. My son and Tatiana were together for a long time, she was his whole world, he planned to marry her before her
The whole table gasps. Then every member of the Ivanov family looks at each other confused, not sure about what they just heard. Maybe they heard her wrong. There is no way the maid just announced that Dimitri’s dead ex-girlfriend is here to see him. There must be some kind of confusion.“What?” Dimitri asks baffled. “Martha, if this is a joke…”“No, sir, this is no joke. Tatiana Petrova is waiting for you in the living room,” the maid replies.Every one jumps up from their seats and runs towards the living room. I go with the rest of the family in the search of a logical explanation for what is happening. It is obvious that Tatiana is not here, she is dead, she died a year ago! The maid is clearly confused and I, like the rest of the family, want to know what is really goin
