Chapter 60

Author: Gu Lingfei
Zachary had his doubts about Serenity’s aesthetics. Sure, Shawn was good-looking, but Shawn had nothing on him; he was way more attractive than Shawn.

Zachary wondered what name he was saved as in Serenity’s list of contacts.

The curiosity was eating Zachary up inside.

Serenity took Shawn’s call.

“Morning, Serenity.”

“That’s early. What’s up?”

“Have you had breakfast, Serenity? I’ll pick you up for work, and we can have breakfast together. My treat or you can buy me breakfast if you want to.”

Shawn’s voice reflected hopeful anticipation.

Since he was a huge help to Serenity last night, Shawn now had an excuse to drive Serenity around and buy her breakfast.

“That’s okay. I’m nearly finished with my breakfast. My husband will be taking me to work later, so you don’t have to make the long trip.”

Oblivious to Shawn’s feelings for her, Serenity simply did not want Shawn to brace the long drive from his home to Brynfield while risking himself getting stuck in the morning

“Grandmom is sick. It’s liver cancer, but the good news is that it’s at an early stage,” Mike said on the phone.“The doctor recommended going for treatment in the city. You and your sister have settled down in the city and have a better idea of the hospitals there. Make a hospital appointment for Grandmom. We’ll set out in a bit and take Grandmom to the hospital. “This way, Grandmom can see a specialist right away when she arrives. I heard that you must pay some sort of deposit for a treatment, so don’t forget to make the payment. Although your parents are gone, you still have a responsibility to your grandparents. You girls have never contributed to Grandmom and Granddad’s living expenses. Now that Grandmom is sick, you should cover for her medical expenses to make up for the neglected family support.” Serenity grimaced as her cousin went on about the plan. She lost her parents at the age of ten. Serenity and Liberty then received their parents’ life insurance payout of 1.2 mi

After the couple finished breakfast, Zachary took his keys to send Serenity to work. As the couple walked down the stairs, the awaiting squad of bodyguards downstairs scattered and pretended to be passers-by. Taking notice of the luxury sedans parked downstairs, including a Rolls Royce, Serenity said to Zachary, “I know we’re living in a nice neighborhood, but I didn’t expect to see a Rolls Royce here.” Since the Rolls Royce owner could afford such an expensive car, they should be living in a huge mansion. Why did they live in an apartment building instead? Was it because the place was closer to work or their children’s school? Serenity could never understand the world of the wealthy. Zachary answered, “Yeah. Looks can be unassuming. There are many who are rich but keep a low profile.” Serenity thought to herself, ‘As if a Rolls Royce screams a low profile.’Playing it cool, Zachary took the wheel of his national MPV and drove his wife to work. Once he was gone, the b

Serenity responded to her sister, saying that she and Zachary would be there for dinner tonight. After Serenity hung up on Liberty, Zachary asked, “Do you get along with your extended family?” “No.” Serenity was frank and honest. She added, “My parents passed away in a car crash when I was ten. No one from my paternal or maternal sides of the family wanted to raise my sister and I.“However, all of them wanted a piece of the insurance payout. Since my uncles had no right to the money, they instructed my grandparents to get more out of us. My dad was the youngest son, so he didn’t get much attention in the family. My grandparents favored my uncles instead.“They said that we don’t have to pay for family support in exchange for a bigger chunk of the insurance payout. They took six hundred thousand dollars and signed the contract to relinquish care for us and our responsibility to them. My grandparents also moved into the two-story house my parents had built just before passing aw

Zachary believed Serenity should not fork out even a dime. Serenity would be labeled ungrateful whether she dished out the cash or not. She might as well save herself the pain and not pay for the medical fees at all. The sisters were underaged when they lost their parents. Yet, the relatives had the heart to abandon them, by not only taking a chunk out of the insurance payout but also occupying the sisters’ family home. Thank goodness Liberty was old enough to overcome any difficulties. Otherwise, the sisters would be living a miserable life. Seeing that Zachary had a point, Serenity thought about it and said, “You’re right, Mr. York. I’ll take your advice and give them nothing. I couldn’t care less what they say about me.” Those people were not ashamed of their own actions back then. Why should she now? For those coming at her about how Grandmom was old and that she was family, they would feel Serenity’s wrath. They should walk in Serenity’s shoes before they had any right t

Meanwhile, Zachary arrived at York Corporation and instructed his secretary as he was heading into his office, “Tell the administrative executive to see me.” The secretary made an internal call to the administrative executive, Josh Bucham. “Mr. Bucham, Mr. York wants to see you in his office.” Josh took the request without a question and hung up. A few minutes later, Josh knocked on the CEO’s office and entered the room. Zachary was knee-deep in his paperwork. With Josh stepping into the office, Zachary put down his pen and beckoned him to come over. “You need me for something?” Josh and Zachary graduated from the same college. Knowing well what Josh was capable of, Zachary signed him to the company. Josh proved his worth as an elite at York Corporation, paving his way up to the position as Zachary’s administrative executive. Josh had Zachary’s utmost trust. “Yeah, but it’s for something personal. I need a minute alone with you.” Josh took a seat and said with a smile,

“Josh!” Zachary was peeved. It was the truth when Zachary said it was all for his pride. Serenity was his wife. It would be a slap on his face if Serenity was harassed. He could not possibly let that happen. “Fine, fine. I let you be. It’s all for your pride and dignity. Alright, I’ll look into the matter. Your wife is Serenity Hunt, right? You could’ve asked Duncan to help you. As your administrative executive, I had a lot on my plate with the business side of things. I don’t even have time to get a drink of water.” Getting up, Zachary went to pour a glass of water. “Drink up. I don’t want you going around saying you don’t have time to even drink water.” “Well, that took you long enough.” “I thought you weren’t thirsty. You would’ve poured yourself a drink if you were. When have you ever asked for permission? Are we buddies or what?” Josh chuckled. “Duncan doesn’t know how to keep a tight lid.” “That’s true. He can be a blabbermouth.” Josh was smug. “Don’t forg

Nothing good ever came out of Zachary’s mouth, to be honest. Perhaps Zachary should show his apology through his actions. “What’s the matter? Were you wrong about your wife? What did you do to warrant an apology gift?” Josh was in the mood for gossip. “None of your business. Get back to work. You’re going to be speaking with Mr. Williams about the partnership tonight. I'll be busy tonight.” Zachary had dinner plans with his wife at his sister-in-law’s.“Why are you busy? Where are you going?” “You should know that a married man shouldn’t spend all his time on work, or else it’ll give his wife an excuse to cheat on him.” Josh, “…” He was speechless. At least Josh found out that the work was pushed to him so his boss could spend some time with his wife. Zachary sure thought he was all that just because he was married. Josh could get married too. He could then skip social engagements and overtime to go home to his wife. Alas, he did not have a girlfriend. There wa

Hank’s mom said Liberty’s education was for nothing. It was not like she could share the financial burden at home. A woman who could manage the house and earn an income suited Hank best. Most importantly, Liberty did not bother to primp herself. She lost her beauty and grace, content with becoming an overweight, unkempt blob. Liberty was no longer the person she was before marriage. Hank would not dream of taking Liberty to social engagements, worried that his colleagues and clients would make fun of him. Liberty had nothing on Jessica. Hank’s words saw Liberty’s blood pressure rising. Liberty hung up the call. She forgot to tell Hank that she had invited Serenity and her husband over for dinner tonight. If both the in-laws and newlyweds came for dinner, there was bound to be a huge fight between her and Hank once the in-laws were gone.If her in-laws could come to dinner whenever they wanted, so could her sister and her husband. Liberty had a say in the family too.

Twenty million dollars! It was the Clark brothers’ turn to exchange glances. They did not expect Jacob and Michael to name such a high price. While they could pay that amount, they did not want to hand the money to Jacob and Michael. After all, it was no longer a small sum to them, given their situation. Adrian was nervous that he would have to fork out the money himself. While he had significantly more assets than an ordinary person, most were fixed assets, and he only had a few tens of millions of savings. Therefore, he was unwilling to pay twenty million dollars out of the blue. After exchanging glances, Adrian said, “Twenty million is too much. We don’t have that much. We may be wealthy people to you, but it’s all fake. We aren’t as rich as you think.“You’re aware of the Fishers family rules—only daughters can be the successors. Sons can’t even take on the Fisher surname, let alone inherit the family assets.“When my mom was alive, she would support us financially in

“If the plan fails, we have a backup plan—hit her bodyguards’ car and force her car to stop. That way, you two can take Caroline away and leave the rest up to us.”Adrian was prepared for various scenarios. If the car accident did not succeed, then they would first eliminate Caroline’s bodyguards. Without them, and with Darren on a business trip, they could easily take down Caroline, who did not know how to fight. After kidnapping her, they would kill and cut her to pieces before throwing her into the sea. No one would be able to find her. If Caroline were dead, the inheritance from Belinda would belong to the Clark brothers. They still could not take over Fisher Enterprise and the Fisher family or do anything to Liberty. However, with Caroline dead, there would be no one to teach the new and inexperienced Liberty. Whether Liberty could hold her ground was an unknown variable. After a discussion between Adrian and his brothers, they set two goals. Firstly, they would kill Car

“Caroline will definitely receive retribution for this.”Adrian said with spite, “I shall see how she meets her death. The people in Wiltspoon will kill her sooner or later.“Does she think they’ll treat her well just because she betrayed her family? They despise us. She’s still my parents’ biological daughter. There’s no way she can be spared.”“You’re absolutely right.”The three men kept cursing Caroline throughout their journey. Upon arriving at Adrian’s villa, he parked the car. Jacob and Michael looked around after getting out of the vehicle. They thought Adrian’s place was luxurious. Adrian mentioned it was a small place, but it was already a lavish place to them. It was many times bigger than their house in the countryside. Adrian invited Jacob and Michael into the villa and they followed suit.Jacob whispered to Michael, “The Clark brothers are fighting with Caroline for the inheritance, Michael. They must be up to no good, calling us here.“No matter what request

“Although Caroline is our biological sister, she doesn’t treat us as her brothers. We only recognize Celine as our sister. I really wish we could turn back time.“We shouldn’t have allowed Caroline to return to the Fisher family. Ever since she came back, the family had been declining. Many things had happened. My mom’s dead, and my dad’s crippled. All of these are related to her.“Caroline’s an ungrateful bitch. I can’t believe she sided with the people from Wiltspoon. Even now, she’s constantly in contact with them and giving away Fisher Enterprise.“It should’ve belonged to Celine.”Jacob and Michael stayed quiet. They had known for a long time that their biological sister was not Caroline but Celine, the then-successor of the Fisher family. Therefore, they treated Caroline badly and often abused her.Although Caroline had learned to put up resistance after growing up, she was still bullied by Jacob and Michael. She hated them. The two men were Celine’s biological brothers, Jacob and Michael Dott. Adrian nodded. “That’s good to hear. Grieving is useless. Avenging Celine and seeking justice is more important.”Jacob and Michael remained silent. They could not do much. When their father was still the Fishers’ butler, he received a high salary with excellent benefits; the Dotts were the wealthiest family in their town. Since their family was rich, the brothers never put effort into studying. They spent time with questionable friends and led a life of debauchery. Jacob and Michael only matured after marrying and having kids. However, their father was already in prison. Meanwhile, Caroline, whom they used to abuse, had returned to the Fisher family. Celine had refused to return to the Dott family and simply gave them some money. Jacob and Michael had built houses in their town and furnished them well. The money they used was from Caroline and their parents’ savings. Since then, their financial crisi

In the afternoon, Duncan fetched Liberty from Fisher Enterprise for dinner. Caroline stood at the building entrance, watching Liberty and Duncan leave. She was envious. She missed Darren. Although he was still following her, he could not expose himself before others. She was not used to it. Nevertheless, she had to endure it to lure the Clark brothers into her trap. She thought, ‘Please make your move soon, brothers. Don’t keep me waiting.’At that moment, Adrian and his brothers exited the elevator. They were discussing something as they walked. When they saw Caroline standing at the entrance, they paused for a moment. However, they quickly pretended they did not see her and walked past her.Soon, three cars left the company.Caroline stood there for a few more minutes before heading to the parking lot. Her personal bodyguards were waiting at her car. They quickly went to her when they spotted her, while one of them opened the door for her. After Adrian left the com

“I’m used to him being by my side. Now that he’s hidden, it just feels weird.”Caroline added, “Even if I want to kiss him, I can only do it in my dreams.”Liberty was speechless. Seeing Liberty being at a loss for words, Caroline smiled. “Did I renew your impression of me?”“Yes. I didn’t know you were this kind of person.”Caroline giggled. “Darren’s too serious and respectful. If I don’t take the lead, we might sleep on opposite ends of the bed after getting married. He probably won’t even dare to turn in bed.”Liberty thought of Darren’s face, which constantly had a stern expression. He only looked normal around Caroline. He indeed treated her respectfully and never dared to offend her. Liberty said, “You’re still his master. It’s only natural that he’s acting that way.“When you two become husband and wife, he’ll change. However, you won’t have to doubt his love and loyalty for you.”The next thing Liberty knew, Caroline asked her private questions regarding married lif

Caroline moved first, exiting the elevator.Adrian blocked her path, refusing to give way.Caroline did not want to argue with her brothers, so she simply sidestepped and continued toward the CEO’s office. The Clark brothers watched her leave.“Let’s go, Adrian.” Justin entered the elevator first.Adrian withdrew his gaze and led Jason into the elevator.“I heard Darren’s out on a business trip and has been sent to another province to handle some matters, so he won’t be back for at least ten days to half a month,” Jason shared in a low voice. “And for the past few days, Caroline’s only been accompanied by those few bodyguards of hers. There really hasn’t been any sign of Darren with her. I’ve asked someone to look into it and verified Darren left Jensburg by flight a few days ago. What do you think, Adrian?”Adrian replied under his breath, “We’re at work. Don’t talk about that here. We’ll talk about it when we get home tonight.”Justin and Jason immediately shut their mouths.

“I’m in charge now, not your mother. If you can’t do the work, then don’t cling to your positions and collect a salary for doing nothing.”Liberty had no intention of tolerating their laziness any longer. The three brothers had tried investing and running their own businesses, but they mostly ended up losing money. The only stable income they had was from renting out the properties and shops they owned. That was why Hunter had advised his sons to return to Ashford, buy more properties and shops, and live off the rental income. It was much more stable than their business ventures. If the properties were hard to rent out, they could always sell them and recover some money, but with their business investments, not only did they lose money, they often ended up in debt by the time the businesses failed. It was a mystery how much of Belinda’s personal wealth had been spent helping her sons pay off their debts while she was alive. However, there were times when they made money.
