Nikolai

Ava returns with a pack of frozen peas, a thin towel and a change of clothes. She places the things she brought by my side on the bed and returns to her position on her knees.

On any other day, the sight of my wife on her knees in front of me would've sent me coming in my pants, but the tightness in her lips, the subtle puffiness around her eyes, mixed with the throbbing pain in my ribs makes it impossible for me to get aroused in this situation.

"Take off your shirt?" She orders and I bite down on my tongue to keep from making a joke on how eager she was to get me naked. Considering how well she'd taken my last attempt at a joke stopping myself before the words slip out seems like the only wise thing to do.

I discard the blood-stained fabric of my shirt to the floor a few feet away from her, wincing as the movement pulls at my ribs. Ava notices. Her fingers pause, hesitation flickering across her features before she schools her expression and reaches for the ice pack.

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    Chapter One: The wedding.

AvaFinding out my father sold me off to a sadistic Mafia Don to save himself was not how I expected my twenty-first birthday to go.But alas. Here, I am. “Are you okay?” My father asks, his voice layered with concern. I turn to observe him, my eyes roaming up and down his slouched shoulders. He was dressed in a black tuxedo one of the men who had brought us in had given him shortly after we arrived at the church. His hair was pushed back, the result of countless hand motions through the balding strands in order to appear much younger than he actually was.It doesn't work.“Ava… Please talk to me”I let out a breath, then pressed my lips together forming a thin line. How exactly did he expect me to answer that?Oh, of course, Dad, I’m fine; it’s great that you sold me to a literal mafia boss to save your life; I totally understand and forgive you.My lips twist downward at the thought. My father had sold me to one of the most ruthless men in all of Chicago in order to save his neck a

AVA I believe you have something that belongs to me. His words linger in the air for only a second before gasps erupt from the audience. My heart hammered against my ribs, and I blinked at the intruder in disbelief. His? What was he talking about? My gaze finds my father. He stands frozen, his lips slightly parted and eyes wide with shock as he looks at the man who called himself Nikolai. “What is going on Marcus!” Alessandro roared, his rage-filled gaze fixed on my father. His face filled with rage. A smile peaked at the corner of the intruder’s lips as he shoved his hands into his pocket. “It’s quite simple, Alessandro. You’ve been played.” Played? As if snapped from a trance My father looked up, his gaze finding mine amid the chaos. Remorse clouded his features. “Forgive me, Ava.” my father says, giving me an apologetic look. My brows knitted together as a slow wave of dread settled at the pit of my stomach, “What have you done?” “It was a long time ago.”

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    Chapter Three: My husband's daughter

Ava I was married. Married. I still couldn't believe it. I was married to a man who crashed my wedding ceremony, declaring that my father had sold me to him when I was only seven. That couldn't have been legal. Oh, and that’s not even the crazy part. Far from it actually. Not only was I married to this crazy person, but apparently, this man was the long-lost heir of the Russian Mafia who was supposed to be dead. And they say weddings aren't fun. I drag my gaze towards the man seated in the driver's seat just a few inches away from me. He sits there composed and unruffled, an effortless control radiating off him like he hadn't just hurled me on his shoulder and out of the church like a caveman seconds ago. There was no denying the fact that the man beside me was the most painstakingly gorgeous man I had ever seen. His chiselled jaw, sharp cheekbones and tousled dark hair framed a face that belonged on the statue of a Greek god. But that still didn't give him the r

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    Chapter four: The wedding night

Nikolai Volkov “Papa” Kira's excited squeal hits me before I see her. She runs up to me, wrapping her tiny arms around my leg like a vine. It's a habit she's developed recently and one I planned on breaking - eventually. Her small, chubby face beams up at me, and her eyes sparkle with the kind of joy that I've become immune to. I let out a breath, resting my head on her curls. “What are you doing here Kira? You're supposed to be with Lydia” Kira giggles, clearly missing the annoyance in my tone. She's made a habit of escaping her nanny at every little opportunity since we got back from Russia. It was a habit that was becoming increasingly worrisome, considering she was a five-year-old child who thought that every opportunity should be seized to play hide and seek. Shaking her head, she grins up at me, revealing a missing tooth that was still intact when I left this morning. I make a mental note to put a hundred-dollar bill under her pillow tonight because the last thi

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    Chapter Five: First day in Hell.

Ava I hardly get any sleep throughout the night. Each time my eyes fluttered shut, Nikolai’s face would emerge from the darkness, just inches from mine, the words he said yesterday lingering in the space between our barely touching lips. I had spent the majority of the night reminiscing about the events of my botched birthday turned wedding day trying to make sense of my current situation. Letting out a disgruntled groan, I turn away from the harsh rays of sunlight streaming in from my windows. Everything was so confusing. My entire life had changed. Everything I knew had been ripped out from under my feet and without an anchor, I had come crashing down into a pile of confusion and uncertainty. Nothing about my life felt real anymore. In the last twenty-four hours, I had gone from birthday girl to wife-to-be, and now I was married to a man whom I barely knew anything about and trapped in his house. Could my life get any worse? The low rumble of my stomach forces me out o

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    Chapter Six: Helping a Murderer

Ava The walls of Nikolai's office are cloaked in a deep charcoal that blends seamlessly into the dark wood design, creating an intense atmosphere. The shelves are filled with all kinds of books, new and old, all turned to the spine. The books are arranged in such precise colour coordination that they look a bit too perfect. The space is much bigger than I expected it to be and I'm almost consumed by its vastness. A large mahogany desk stands at the centre of it all, polished to a gleam with neatly stacked papers arranged on each side, and not a single paper document out of place. A sleek black leather chair stands just behind the desk, its high back giving off an air of authority against the soft glow of the crystal chandelier above the room. Nikolai occupies the chair, matte-framed glasses perched on the bridge of his nose as his pen moves frantically over a document, his brows furrowing in concentration. In the last twenty minutes I've been seated opposite this man

AvaI spend the next day exploring the halls of the Volkov mansion. The library more than anywhere else and by the time it's evening, strange as it might sound, I'm more than excited to see my husband again Except I don't see him.Because he doesn't return. At first, I thought maybe something might have come up to keep him a day longer, but then, I didn't hear from him for the next two days, which only grooms my worry. My thoughts spiral, raging from, did something happen to him? To, What if he's hurt? And then my personal favourite, Why won't he answer his goddamn phone?I do everything I can to reach him. Calls texts, you name It. I try it all, and each time, I'm met with nothing. It's almost as if he just disappeared.By the time the third day rolls out, it feels like I can't breathe. I can't focus on anything else, and I try, my God, do I try to reach him, but as usual, I'm met with the constant automatic voice, which I've come to grow annoyed with, informing me that the number

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    Text Messages And Shoes

AvaWhen I wake up the next day, Nikolai is gone and on his nightstand is a light pink shoebox. A note sits neatly on top of it, the edges crisp. My fingers move before I can stop them, reaching out and lifting the piece of paper from the box. I flick it open and stare at the words sprawled in the unfamiliar handwriting.'Try not to amputate your leg while I'm gone. I’d hate to come back and find my wife hopping around. —Nikola"A smile tugs at my lips as I read the note, and once I'm through, I place it back on the nightstand and retrieve the box to my lap. With one tug at the bow, the delicate pink string that holds the box together falls onto the bed.Inside, a pair of sleek beige pumps nestled on a bed of soft velvet stares back at me.The pumps are gorgeous. They're the kind of shoes that make me feel cautious while tracing my fingertips over the leather, simply because I don't want to scratch it.Nikolai had promised to get me a new pair last night but I hadn't expected him to d

AvaWhen we finally step inside the hallway leading up to our bedroom, Nikolai shifts slightly, carefully setting me down on my feet. His touch lingers on my waist longer than what most would consider necessary, but to me, it's nowhere near enough."Thank you" I murmur, my voice soft as I clear my throat, carefully trying to balance most of my weight on my good foot. "For the lift" I clarify, and he smiles. My heart combusts. Fucking dimples. "And for the date"As far as first dates go, tonight was one the best I've ever had, granted it was the only one I've ever had but still, it was amazing. Nikolai managed to check every box on my imaginary list of honourable first date activities, even the ones I didn't know I had.And yes, even with the car breaking down and forcing us to walk home, I doubt any other date will come close to topping this one anytime soon.He nods once, the smile on his lips stretching as his freaking dimples deepen. That's twice in the last forty-eight hours that

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    Walk To Remember

AvaTonight has been perfect—almost too perfect. I’ve always believed that nothing could ever be this flawless, at least not without a price and I was right. Because just as the evening was winding down and we were heading home, the car broke down.Apparently the price of a good evening is a stranded night in the middle of Chicago wearing heels that are pretty close to starnggling my feet.I glance over at my husband who is on the phone with the mechanic, his jaw tight and his free hand running through his hair in frustration. That can't be a good sign."How long did he say it'll take for him to get here" I ask Nikolai when he returns to my side on the pavement. He lets out a breath, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand as his gaze meets mine."At least an hour," he replies, his tone rough. He drops his hand from his neck shoving it into the pockets of his pants, "We're going to have to call an Uber"I thought as much.If my legs weren't killing me I would've felt some sense of

Nikolai"Why did you decide to open a restaurant?"Ava's question blindsides me a little, even though I expected her curiosity to surface eventually. What happened thirteen years ago was something I never thought I'd be able to tell her and yet I did. Her reaction was nothing like I thought it would be. It came softly, and she looked at me with an understanding I couldn’t quite grasp, gently holding my hand. When I met her gaze, the only emotion reflected was a quiet curiosity that had me wanting to tell her everything she asked. Not a trace of pity in sight.I lean back in my chair, my fingers tapping the table softly as I meet her eyes."My mother loved to cook." I say, "She wanted to open a restaurant when she was younger and if she hadn't married my father I know she would've"Her expression softens, and I feel the slightest sting in my chest. When I was younger my mother was my haven. She was the one person my brother and I could rely on and the only person to show me what love w

Ava“Mr. And Mrs Volkov, We've been expecting you”, the restaurant manager greets us as soon as we step into The Azure Reserve, his tone polished, yet the tremble in his voice betrays the professional demeanour he's going for. He extends a slight bow, then lifts his gaze to meet Nikolai's. “It’s such an honour to have you dining with us tonight. The rooftop has been reserved for your privacy as per your request, Mr Volkov.”It has? I glance back at Nikolai, my gaze roaming his face, searching for a hint of awareness, but his expression remains impassive as always, giving nothing away while mine is wide-eyed.When Nikolai told me we were eating at the Azure Reserve, I assumed that we would be eating in the main restaurant alongside the other patrons. Maybe we'd be given a private booth since he was the owner but that was as far as I expected.Nikolai's hand on my waist remains steady as we follow the manager through the luxurious dining area.Compared to reality, The pictures I’ve seen
