Ava

"No"

The word tumbles out of my mouth in a rapid fit. I shoot out from my chair, instinctively stepping away from him. A wave of disgust trickles up my spine before sinking its claws around my throat.

"No?" Nikolai’s voice is deceptively soft, but his eyes flash with a dangerous intensity as he leans back against his desk. You would think he had never heard the word before with the way he was looking at me.

"No" I repeat, firmer this time. "I will not help you kill my father. My God, what is wrong with you? I mean, I knew you were insane, but this? This is a whole new level, even for the likes of you."

He leans back against his desk, watching me. He remains annoyingly calm, unfazed by my reaction.

"Your father isn't the man you think he is.",

My brows furrow as I try to read his expression"What's that supposed to mean?"

He steps closer and runs a hand along his jaw, "Your father has blood on his hands, Solnishko, Russian blood to be exact."

My shoulders stiffen,

Ava. The devil is real. And he is not a little red man with horns and a fork for a tongue. No, he can be beautiful. A fact I think most people forget. Nikolai was the devil in this scenario, and much like the actual devil, he was the ruler of my personal version of hell. He consumes my thoughts as l lay in bed, tangled in the sheets, our conversation from hours ago - if you could consider it that- replay in my mind. My thoughts drift back to his request in his office and I feel a knot tighten in my stomach at the memory. It was already dark outside, the cool glow of the moon slipped in through my window, casting a dim light across my bedroom floor. I had spent the last couple of hours locked up in here, trying to rid myself of the anger that had now turned to confusion that still burned brightly within me. Nikolai was accusing my father of murdering his brother who just so happened to be Kira's biological father. He wanted revenge for the blood my father spilled and he wa

Ava “Interesting” Kat hums to herself the next day when I tell her what happened with Kira. I shoot her a questioning look and arch my left brow, “What's so interesting about it?” We were currently lazing about by the pool which is something you wouldn't expect two adults to be doing on a Monday afternoon. Kat had insisted that a pool day was what we needed to solidify our bond in best friend-in-lawhood - her words, not mine- and I was too much of a people pleaser to refuse and just sort of went with it. “What is so interesting about it is that Kira doesn't just crawl into bed with anyone after having a nightmare. She only prefers it when Nikolai consoles her and the fact that she went to your room after one is just… odd.” I kick my feet against the water as I listen to her. “There was nothing odd about it.” I tell her, “Nikolai wasn't home, and I just so happened to be the only one awake. I'm sure if she knew that you were awake too she would've gone to you and Ivan’s roo

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    Chapter Ten: Cellphone requests

Nikolai “I need a cell new phone” Ava announces on a sunny afternoon, three days after our last encounter in my office. She looks down at me, determination filling her gaze as she makes her request. I hadn't expected Ava to willingly enter the same room as me after our last encounter. Yet there she was, standing across from me, the sunlight streaming in from the window casting the perfect glow on her silhouette from just the right angle. To say I was surprised to see her again in my office would be an understatement, to say the least, but then again what is life if not full of unexpected surprises and Ava standing before me, dressed in a little red top that hugged her figure, partnered with a pair of black jeans that accentuated her curves would be the most unexpected surprise of the century. We've barely seen each other since our last encounter, and I had convinced myself she was running away from me or, at the very least, avoiding me. I guess I was wrong on both accounts b

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    Chapter 11: Angry Kisses

AVA Nikolai’s lips are excruciatingly soft and not at all like what I expected them to feel like. When I tugged him down to my lips earlier I fully intended for the kiss he had requested to be just that. A kiss. I never imagined that this would happen. This wasn’t just a kiss. It was earth-shattering, mind-numbing and nothing at all like the kiss we shared at the altar. Whereas that kiss was for show, this one was to show me who exactly I belonged to. And my God did it show me. The feeling of his lips against mine hits me with such intensity that my first response is to pull away. I bring my hands to his chest, fully intending to do just that, but when he nips at my bottom lip and then swipes his tongue against the sting to soothe the ache, lust fills my veins, flashing through me like hot bolts of lightning. Nikolai grasped my throat in his hand, holding me firmly against his body as he devoured my mouth with one stroke of his tongue at a time. Tingles spread across my skin

Ava True to his words, Ivan arrives at my door thirty minutes before dinner, holding a sleek, brand-new model of the latest smartphone in his hands. He hands the device over to me and I take it, examining the shiny black surface. “It’s brand new,” Ivan explains when he notices my hesitation. “They were able to transfer some of your data into it, so I’m pretty sure you have some of your contacts in there. You might even find a few old messages. But unfortunately, they weren’t able to retrieve your phone number since your phone isn’t accessible anymore,” He says, voice light, but I could sense a hint of seriousness behind his words. I nod and press the power button, watching as the device comes to life in my hand. The familiar logo glows on the screen, accompanied by the familiar welcome tune. Relief floods through me as the home screen displays, and I tap on the contacts icon where- sure enough, the majority of my contacts are still there. I scroll through the names, watching t

Ava Cara picks up on the third ring. “Hello?” Cara’s thick Irish accent fills my ear from the other side of the phone, and it feels like a weight has suddenly been lifted off my shoulders on hearing her voice again. “Hi,” I say. A pause and then, “You fucking bitch where the hell have you been?” I laugh, the sound light and full of genuine happiness. I’m glad to hear she hasn’t changed. “I’m glad you’re fine too. Thank you very much” “Don’t you try to act coy with me Ava. Do you have any idea how worried I've been about you? I fucking called your brother, for Christ's sake.” While Cara and I are friends, Aaron and Cara were as friendly as a couple of male geese during mating season. They despise each other, which, in my opinion, doesn't make any sense since I've always thought that they'd be perfect for each other. You know, When they aren't trying to kill each other. “And don’t get me started on your father. The man’s been missing for almost a week now. Nobody can r

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    Chapter 14: Tracking What's mine.

Nikolai “I can’t find Ava” Those are the first words out of Kat's lips the moment I step into the living room. Kat stands before me, hands fidgeting, face flushed with what I can only describe as worry as she delivers the news to me. Her husband stands a few steps away, his hands shoved into the pockets of his slacks as he glances between Kat and me. His stance is guarded, like he is prepared to intervene at the first sight of trouble. His brows furrows. He looks worried, probably by the idea of me lashing out at his wife as she speaks. I almost laugh at the thought. As if I would willingly hurt Kat. She was my blood, and even though her words angered me in this moment, I would never willingly hurt her. She was family, after all, and I would never put her in harm's way. “What do you mean you can’t find my wife?” I’m surprised by the level of restraint with which I'm able to say the words. I'm almost sure that the words aren't mine, and if it weren't for the slight wince

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    Chapter 15: Parking Lot confrontations

Ava There’s only one word I can use to describe the sinking feeling that settles in the pit of my stomach, twisting in my gut, sharp and unrelenting, as it grips tighter around the muscle before releasing it and finding its way upwards to my chest where it sinks it’s vicious claws into the beating organ that resides behind my ribcage. Dread. Dread is the only word I can use to describe the feeling that surges through me at the sight of Nikolai leaning against a black BMW in my school's parking lot. One of his hands is shoved into the pockets of the dark leather jacket he's wearing, the other loosely holding a cigarette. He takes a drag from it, and I watch as faint puffs of grey smoke curl upwards before hitting the dark lenses of the sunglasses on his face and disappearing into the afternoon air. Dissipating like a ghost around him. He is wearing a fitted white dress shirt with the sleeves casually rolled up to just below his elbows, showcasing his forearms and tattoos for an

Ava It all happens so fast. The room erupts into gasps and screams. Chairs scrape back as people fly from their seats towards the exit. Someone drops a spoon. And the entire cafe dives right into chaos. It takes no more than fifteen seconds for the entire place to empty out, leaving only Nikolai, my father, and me standing in the deserted café.The silence that follows is one that feels as suffocating as it looks. My heart thunders in my chest, and I can feel the tension crackling in the air like an electric storm. Nikolai was here. But how? He wasn't supposed to be here. I hadn't told him where I was going to be and the timing feels too calculated to be a coincidence. Nikolai’s gaze doesn’t leave my father as he steps closer, standing until he’s by my side. He uses his free hand to move me behind him, allowing his body to act as a shield between me and the man whose brown eyes resemble mine. The air around us thickens, the kind of heavy, dense silence that comes right before a st

AvaThe words hit me like a slap, the coldness of them slicing through the tense atmosphere between us. For a moment, I can’t breathe, can’t think. I just stare at him, my father, who has never once been anything close to the man I needed him to be."Money?" I repeat, the incredulity dripping from my voice. "You... need money?"That's why he came back? Because he needed money? Not because of anything else.I already knew his reason for coming back had to be something big but this… this felt extremely underwhelming and yet not entirely surprising.“While I was gone,” He begins, running his fingers through his greying strands. “I made some bad decisions. Found my way into some debts.” His words are hurried as if he's trying to make them sound more reasonable. "Look, I’m not asking for much, just enough to get me out of this mess."I blink at him “And how much exactly is enough?”He hesitates, “Thirty grand”Thirty Fucking grand?“I know this might sound bad…”“Might?”“Some really bad p

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    Reunion (Part One)

AvaMy mother had a saying. The world is an unpredictable place. It was a generic saying. One I knew that she was not the first to say but one she repeated often enough for me to align the saying with her name. However, it isn't until this very moment that I understand why she said it so often.I spot him before he sees me. He’s seated in one of the seats at the far end of the cafe which was partially covered by one of the dim lights of the cafe and a red brick wall that shielded more than half of his body from the window opposite from him.The world was indeed an unpredictable place, I realized for the second time in the last ten minutes. One minute, I'm prancing between classes, wondering what’s the difference between Renaissance and Baroque art, and the next, I'm inches away from the man, who’d been my only parental figure for more than half of my life. The seat he’d chosen was tucked away within the shadows of the restaurant and despite the movements of the staff, one still had a

AvaWhen my phone chimes in my pocket, alerting me of a notification three days later, my entire body goes numb as I stare at the words on my screen that seem to drown out the careless chatter all around the hallway. It’s a text. But it’s not just any text, no, it’s the kind of text you don’t expect to get on a warm Tuesday afternoon after trudging back and forth between classes all morning. It is also the kind of text that makes my heart stop beating in my chest and nausea rolls through me, twisting my gut painfully.Unknown: We need to talk. Meet me at the cafe on the 5th. Tell no one. Love Dad.My grip tightens around my phone and a chill runs down my spine, curling at the end as I reread the words displayed on my phone screen. It wasn’t a normal text message a daughter hoped to get from her runaway father after he disappeared for two months. It didn’t hold any hint of casualty, or at the very least, formality. It was cold, straight to the point and if it weren’t for the last two w

AvaI wave goodbye to Tyler as she settles Oliver and Emma into the backseat of the sleek black car that came to pick them up. She waves back at me, offering me one last smile before she closes the door. Their car pulls into the driveway, its red taillights glowing in the dim evening light, and I stand there, arms wrapped around myself, watching as it disappears into the night. The living room is empty when I step back in. Kat and Ivan had retired early to bed and Nikolai had gone to put Kira to sleep shortly after I escorted Tyler outside. My footsteps echo off the walls as I make my way to the Kitchen and when I step inside, I drag my gaze along the stacked plates sitting on the sink and the empty glasses right beside it.The party lasted longer than planned; normally, I could easily get a staff member to help clean up, but most were off duty, and those who weren’t were too busy tidying up the party decorations.Seeing no other option — or maybe I was just looking for a distraction

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    Birthday Parties and Ivan

AvaKira’s birthday arrived sooner than expected, and, for the first time since I arrived at the Volkov mansion, something other than guards filled the halls.Kira wasn’t the only child running around these halls. As promised, Tyler asked Emma’s parents if she could come. It takes a fair amount of convincing on my part, but they eventually agree — but with one condition. They insist on having one of their own personal bodyguards present at the party.I try to reassure them that it isn’t necessary, that the estate was secure and safe but their insistence makes it difficult for me to refuse, Their minds are already made up, and when I tell Nikolai about the arrangement, he isn’t exactly thrilled about the possibility of having someone not on his security team scout his estate for potential threats. Eventually, I get him to change his mind and he allows them to bring one bodyguard. No more. With how insistent Emma’s parents are about not leaving her alone, you’d think they would’ve at le

Marcus felt the weight of those words punch him square in the chest. Guilt gnawed at the edges of his conscience, a cruel reminder of the lives lost in the tangled web of his creation."I didn’t—" he started, but Sergei held up a hand."Spare me your excuses, Marcus" Sergei's voice dropped an octave, cold and cutting. “You know how I despise lies.”He lifted from his seat, using the table as leverage as he straightened to his full height.“Three of my men died because of you.” "I didn’t know—""But you should have." Sergei’s voice was a low growl now. "You had one job — bring me guns. Good guns. And yet you sent my men into battle with weapons you swore would work. Faulty guns, Marcus. You armed my men with death."If this were any other conversation and not one that determined his life or the life of his daughter, Marcus would’ve pointed out how dramatic Sergai was being. He hadn’t known that the guns he’d delivered to the Volkovs would be faulty. He hadn’t anticipated that any of

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    The Past (4) Part One

Marcus Blackwood stood in front of the Volkov estate for what might’ve been the third time this week. Fourth, if he counted the time, he barely made it halfway to the gate before turning back.He had stood in front of this gate countless times before, all for business, but now he had come to beg for his life and that of his daughters. The guard at the watch post was the first to notice his presence. This one differed from the last, Marcus noted to himself. While the other guard who’d been here, the last time he mustered up the courage to stand in front of the gate, was tall, this one was short and scruffy. A real rough around the edges sort of guy.“State your name and business.”Marcus cleared his throat. “Blackwood. Marcus Blackwood. I… uh, I’m here to see the boss”The guard narrowed his eyes as if the name left a bitter taste on his tongue, and he was sure it had. In this line of work, nothing was as important as a name. A name commanded respect. It caused uproar and goosebumps in

  • Married To The Russian Mafia Boss    The Park

AvaParks, they say, are the one place on earth where even the most caged souls can taste a little bit of freedom.Granted, I have no idea who they are, but surely they must be right because the look I see on Kira's face as she runs through the park—one of the less crowded, more private ones, of course—is one filled with pure excitement.Black curls bounce with the wind as she waves at me, her lips stretched thin and smile wide as she spins around right there in the middle of it all.I wave back at her, my heart full.Getting Nikolai's approval was surprisingly easy.Too easy.I'd expected resistance or, at the very least, his disapproval. But he'd been, surprisingly, willing.I watch Kira chase a butterfly, her giggles mixing with the sound of the other kids in the park and I can't help the warmth that spreads through me at the sight. She looks so happy. Free. The complete opposite of the girl who'd wandered into my studio yesterday.Settling onto the bench, I pull my coat tighter ar
