"Are you happy now?" Richard asked, returning to his cold voice. Kristin took her hand away from him, frowning.
She couldn’t understand why her heart fluttered all of a sudden. It was so obvious that his apologies weren’t sincere, so why did her heart flutter at hearing him speak in a low voice? This devil standing in front of her had almost strangled her to death without a second thought, so why on earth did her heart flutter? Kristin desperately wanted to leave, but then again, she thought of the money involved. Wealth circulated around Richard, and Kristin had no doubt that he’d be able to pay off the huge debt her family owed without hesitation. The main reason she came here was to lift her family out of poverty, and if Richard could be her gateway to achieving that dream, she was ready to do anything. Moreover, he didn’t look like someone who had time for women, his cold and dominant personality would surely drive any sensible woman away. But Kristin didn’t care; she needed money. These were the thoughts dancing in her brain as she stared at Richard’s emotionless and empty face. "Why are you staring at me like you’re watching a movie? Do you need more apologies? Because I won’t give them to you," Richard stated. Kristin cleared her throat. "Your apologies weren’t sincere, but I accept them. At least they came out of your mouth. After what you did to me and the monstrous behavior you displayed, I didn’t expect you to apologize." "Just know that if I find out you’re working for Ophelia, I won’t hesitate to end your life," his eyes warned. Kristin gulped, trying to maintain her balance, even though she was scared. "I am not a spy. I don’t even know who this Ophelia is. If you think I’m lying, run a background check on me, and you’ll see I’m from Glenwood and that I don’t know anyone in Vegas." "Let’s see about that," Richard said and sat down, while Kristin remained standing. "Aren’t you going to sit?" his baritone voice asked, and Kristin sat down, looking elsewhere. "Are you going to be my acting wife or not?" he asked. He wasn’t even asking; he was commanding her. "Aren’t you going to at least act politely? It won’t take a year out of your life." "Look, Peanut, you better watch your tone. I might want to clear my name, but that doesn’t mean I will submit to you. One more annoying act from you, and I will send you out of here, because it’s obvious you have nowhere to go," Richard said coldly. "Fine. You don’t have to be so cold." she sneered. Richard knitted his eyebrows, waiting for answers. Kristin scratched her hair slightly before giving an answer to his question. "I will agree to be your acting wife, I have no options anyway." "How much do you need?" Richard asked. The way he asked made it clear he could come up with any amount in the blink of an eye. He wasn’t just a billionaire for nothing. He might be taking care of his dad’s company, but he had his own wealth and properties scattered around Las Vegas. "Three million dollars," Kristin said, her eyes rolling sideways, secretly anticipating what Richard was going to say. She knew three million dollars was a huge amount of money, but that was the amount her parents owed to the farmers back in Glenwood. "Just three million dollars?" Richard asked, shocking Kristin to her core. Did he call three million dollars 'just'? That huge amount of money could buy her entire existence, and this cold-hearted man called it 'just'. What was she expecting anyway? Las Vegas is a beautiful city dominated by rich and powerful people, Kristin thought to herself, her eyes still widened. "Why are you surprised? You think three million dollars is a big deal?" "Of course it is! My parents have been working like slaves to raise that money!" she snapped. "So their debt is three million dollars?" Richard asked again, and Kristin slowly nodded her head. "Fine then. I’m going to settle their debts and even add more to it, as long as our secret doesn’t leak out." "Don’t worry, Mr. Grouchy; I’m a good actress." "Why are you calling me Grouchy?" "Why are you calling me Peanut?" she questioned back. "I told you my name, but you keep calling me Peanut." "You look small and tiny, and that’s why I’m calling you Peanut." "Well, your face never wears a smile, and you get angry easily, so the name Mr. Grouchy suits you. Have a problem with that?" Kristin asked. Richard stared at her brown eyes for a while before putting Luke on call. He came right away at lightning speed and presented the marriage contract proposal to Kristin. It stated that they would be married and live under the same roof for a year before ending it. "If you don’t have any problem with the contract, then go ahead and sign it," Richard ordered. Kristin was about to sign the contract, but she stopped halfway and looked at Richard. "I will agree to be your wife for a year, in exchange for paying off my family’s debts, right? You won't change your mind, would you?" she asked. "I am a man of my words." he replied. "You won’t come close to me or try to touch me, right?" she asked again. "Don’t worry, Peanut; you aren’t my type. Should I buy you a mirror?" Richard’s baritone voice asked. His gray eyes pierced coldly at her. Kristin scoffed lightly and picked up the pen again, but she dropped it once more. "What do you want now?!" Richard yelled at her, his anger building up. "I want to ask a favor from you." "What kind of stupid favor is that?" "About the money, is it okay if you gradually send it to my parents in Glenwood? If you send the whole amount to them, they might get suspicious about how I got the money. I don’t want them to find out that I agreed to be in a contract marriage with you, all because of money," Kristin said. "Fine, can you go ahead and sign it?" Kristin nodded with a smile and quickly signed the papers. Richard did the same, and after that, he walked out. Luke was the only one left with her. "You should go after him, he is going home." "How do you cope working with a man like him?" Kristin asked, and Luke only smiled. "Let’s go, Kristin. He’d get angry if he waits for you." "May I ask where this place is? It’s so beautiful." she grins. "It’s a fine dining establishment, and it’s one of Richard’s properties." Luke replied. Kristin nodded, admiring its beauty. They both left the office, and Richard was already sitting in the backseat. "Join him in the back, I will drive you both home. You both will be living together." Luke smiled at her. Kristin puffed out some air from her mouth before joining Richard in the backseat. He didn’t even spare her a glance, his cold aura dominated the car.Ophelia sat on the bed, staring at the picture of a ten-year-old girl, her eyes mixed with sadness and regret. Julio entered the room and said, "We should find a way to help our son. The rumors won’t stop going viral." "What son are you talking about? Is Richard our son?" "Not again, Ophelia," Julio said with a tired voice, and Ophelia threw the picture of the ten-year-old girl at him. "She is our daughter, not Richard! After you adopted that Richard twenty years ago, you have completely forgotten our daughter! The heirless of the Hernandez family!" Ophelia shouted. "It’s high time you accept that we can never find our daughter!" "And whose fault was it? If you weren’t so careless and left our daughter alone in that mall, she would still be here with us! Instead of searching endlessly for our daughter, you adopted a devil!" "Richard isn’t a devil, and you know that!" "Easy for you to say because you weren’t the one who gave birth to Adriana! From the very first day Richard se
Kristin's jaw dropped at his statement, her hands not leaving her chest. "You barge in without knocking, and instead of apologizing, you choose to insult me?" she asked, glaring at him. "Don’t expect an apology from me. I told you to fix yourself up snappily, but you decided to give birth in the bathroom," Richard replied, his face like a ten-thousand-years-old rock. "Whatever, you should leave so I can get dressed." "I have no time to waste, Peanut. Make sure you are ready when I come back," he coldly said to her before leaving the room. "He is so annoying!" Kristin stamped her feet on the ground. Remembering how Richard called her breasts small buttons, she rushed to the mirror to look at herself. "It’s just the perfect size! How dare Mr. Grouchy call my breasts small buttons?" Kristin snarled. Nevertheless, she dressed up hesitantly to avoid witnessing his anger. She stepped out of the room and met Richard at the doorway. "I’m ready!" she smiled. He studied the
Richard’s eyes didn’t leave Kristin’s face, because she was totally different from the woman he had met yesterday. He kept looking at her, stunned by her transformation, until Luke tapped him. "Here’s the magazine you were holding, boss," Luke said, smiling. His smile was a bad one because he knew Richard was stunned by Kristin’s new look. "You kept staring at me. Do I look beautiful?" Kristin asked. "No," he answered curtly and left without taking the newspaper from Luke. "I’m still wondering how you manage to cope with his behavior. He didn’t have to be so cold," Kristin frowned. Somehow, she wished Richard had complimented her new look the way Luke did. After the payments were made, Luke went back to Richard’s house to drop off the things they got for Kristin, while Richard and Kristin left to register their marriage. It came as shocking news to the lady in charge of the marriage registration, but with the coldness of Richard’s face, she was too scared to ask questions. Sh
The sound of the doorbell distracted Kristin, who was lost in the movie she was watching. She rushed to the door, and with the video intercom system mounted on the wall beside the luxurious door, Kristin saw a delivery man standing outside. Kristin furrowed her eyebrows, wondering what a delivery man was doing here. Guessing Richard might have placed the order, she opened the door and beamed a smile at him. "I'm here to deliver Mr. Richard's order," the delivery man muttered. Kristin accepted the delivery from him, and just after she signed and shut the door, Richard came out of his room, hands tucked in the pockets of his gray joggers, his face an embodiment of iciness as always. "A delivery came for you," Kristin muttered. "The delivery is for you." "Me? But I didn’t order anything," Kristin said in a whisper. "Open the box and figure it out yourself," Richard said, and went straight to the kitchen to get a bottle of water. After Richard went to the kitchen, Kristin opened
As the CEO of his father's company, Richard attended a meeting at Skyline Corporation, but his mind wasn’t in the room. Though he sat at the head of the table, his thoughts were elsewhere, far from the discussions happening around him. He was physically present but mentally absent. His mind kept replaying how he had treated Kristin earlier. A pang of guilt gnawed at him for yelling at her, an innocent lady who had done nothing but try to be kind. She had acted outside the terms of their contract, but the way he had lashed out at her was unnecessary. He remembered the way she flinched when he raised his voice, and guilt twisted his insides. Richard had always loathed women, treating them with a cold detachment, almost as if they were beneath him. He never felt remorse for it—until now. The guilt he felt was new. Why was he even feeling guilty? These thoughts clouded his mind until a light tap on his shoulder pulled him back to reality. "Are you okay? You seem lost," Julio ask
Kristin nervously clasped her hands together as she watched Luke help Richard into the bed. Richard was still unconscious, and Luke had called at the perfect time, just when Kristin desperately needed help. She had quickly answered the phone and informed Luke of what had happened to Richard. Luke had arrived in record time because he genuinely cared about Richard. "Will he be okay?" Kristin asked, her voice trembling. "He will be if he manages to sleep," Luke mumbled, knowing all too well about Richard's struggles with insomnia after working with him for five years. "What do you mean?" Kristin asked, confused. "What exactly happened to him?" Luke inquired, trying to change the subject. "I don’t know. He just became triggered when he walked into my room," Kristin replied. "What were you doing at the time?" Luke questioned. Kristin hesitated, biting her lower lip before answering, "I was dancing with a ball anklet on." "A ball anklet?" Luke’s brows furrowed. Kristin
The talking alarm woke Richard up, signaling the start of a new day. He slowly opened his eyes and was stunned by what he saw. His head was resting comfortably on Kristin’s chest, and his hands were still wrapped around her waist. “What the heck…” he muttered, quickly pulling away from Kristin, who was still asleep Did he really spend the night in a woman's arms? How had he managed to fall asleep? Normally, he wouldn’t sleep until close to dawn. How had the impossible become possible last night? Richard questioned the walls in his room, but since they couldn’t talk, he got no answers. His eyes slowly returned to the woman sleeping in his bed. She looked so fragile and innocent while she slept. Richard swiped his dark hair back, remembering that he was the one who had wrapped his arms around her last night. What had he been thinking? Without waking Kristin, he got out of bed and began getting ready for the day’s business. He was about to knot his tie when Kristin
"Spend the night in my room," his baritone tone interrupted her. "Huh?" Kristin uttered, her voice barely a whisper. Did Mr. Grouchy just ask her to spend the night in his room? But why? she wondered as she stared at Richard with wide, innocent eyes. Richard was at a loss for words. He still couldn’t believe how those words had slipped out of his mouth. Last night, he had slept soundly in Kristin’s arms without any nightmares disturbing him. He had been thinking about it all day, and that’s why, when he opened his mouth, the words "Spend the night in my room" had come out before he could stop them. "You want me to spend the night in your room?" Kristin asked, disbelief clear in her voice. Richard knew he couldn’t take back what he had said. Kristin had heard him loud and clear, and lying would only make him seem foolish. He wasn’t sure if he could trust her with his secret. She already knew about his phobia of jangling sounds; would revealing his insomnia make her know too m
Romina quickly rushed to Kathryn and separated her from Richard. "I'm sorry for..." Romina paused when she recognized Richard as the same man Kristin was married to. "You?" she muttered, unable to hide her surprise. She had to admit he looked even better in person than in the photos. "You know me?" Richard furrowed his brows, unable to place where he might have seen Romina, after all, he had never met her before. "Richard!" Gladys approached him. "Ma'am Gladys?" Richard uttered, surprised to see Kristin’s mother in Las Vegas. He quickly noticed the man standing next to her was likely Kristin's father. But why were they here? Without taking her eyes off Richard, Gladys called out to Romina. "Romina." "Yes, Auntie?" Romina responded. "Take Kathryn outside and wait until I call for you," Gladys instructed, still staring at Richard. Romina was about to take Kathryn’s hand, but the girl rushed to Richard and hugged him tightly. "No! I don’t want to leave. I want to stay with him!"
Luke kept searching for Kristin, trying to figure out where she might have gone. He couldn’t think of a place because Kristin hadn’t spent much time in Vegas. He didn’t want to call her because he knew she was in a state where she wouldn’t answer the phone. An idea struck him, and hoping she might be there, Luke rushed to the airport—and he was right. Kristin was standing at the entrance, unsure whether she should go in. She had nothing with her. "Kristin!" Luke called out, rushing to her. She looked at him with watery eyes. "Going back to Glenwood isn’t the best option," Luke said, shaking his head. "I don’t want to go back," she replied in a tearful voice. "Then what are you doing here?" Kristin swallowed the painful lump in her throat. "I wanted to go back, but I keep restraining myself. How can I still be in love with a man who raised his hand on me? I can still believe he slap me, Luke. I tried to understand him, knowing he’s cold and has a temper, but I never thought h
Kristin’s eyes widened in shock and pain as she stumbled back, her hand flying to her cheek where he had struck her. The weight of his actions hung heavily in the room, and the silence that followed was filled with an unspoken understanding of the gravity of what had just happened. Richard's face reflected pure shock as he realized what he had done. He had slapped Kristin. He had slapped the woman his heart was falling for. He wasn’t a woman beater, but he had raised his hand against the one person who lit up his world. "Firefly," he called, his voice thick with regret. For the second time, he had let his anger take control, but this time it was worse because he had struck her. "Firefly," he tried to reach out to her, but she shrank back, tears streaming down her face. "I'm sorry. I... I... didn’t mean to," he pleaded. He hadn’t intended to hurt Kristin, but when his anger took over, he lost control. Kristin didn’t say a word, her cheek stinging from the slap. If someone ha
This was the first time Cecelia had seen Luke talking to another woman, and she felt a pang of jealousy. "She is my wife. I have something to attend to," Luke said, walking past Cecelia. He didn’t want to talk to her because he was still angry with her; he couldn’t get off the fact that he mentioned another man’s name while making love with her. "Really, Luke? I came here to see you, and you’re just going to walk out on me?" Cecelia asked loudly, but Luke didn’t spare her a glance. "Just give him some time," Kristin said, helping Luke with his response. Cecelia wanted to react but saw it as a good opportunity to get to know Kristin and befriend her to extort money from Lewis. She was unaware that Lewis was hospitalized. "Thanks. I’m Cecelia," she said with a fake smile. "I’m Kristin," Kristin said, genuinely smiling at her. "I’m not cheating on Luke. The movie happened to be my favorite, and that’s why I mentioned the character’s name." Kristin only smiled; wondering if she w
Gladys added more adobos to Kathryn’s plate, and she grinned with her missing teeth. "How long has Kristin been in Las Vegas?" Romina asked. "Going on two months now. You know the only blue-collar job here is farming. She barely graduated from school, and we couldn’t afford to pay our debts. Kristin took it upon herself to make a living, which is why she went to Las Vegas. You both are best friends, aren’t you on talking terms?" Gladys asked. "No, we haven’t. I’ve been too busy working as a nurse in Singapore, and the little time I have, I take care of Kathryn. When she calls, I’m busy, and the time difference makes it impossible for us to talk," Romina explained. "And your mom?" "Still not on speaking terms. She was the first person I informed about my return, but she didn’t seem to care. I came back because of Kathryn." "Why? Is everything okay with her?" Gladys asked worriedly, her eyes on Kathryn, who was eating. Romina sighed and began to speak. "She’s been having nightmar
"Kristin got pregnant after a one-night stand with a man on the night of her freshman party at her new college in the Philippines. She is now a single mom with a six-year-old daughter," Parker revealed. Ophelia chortled at Parker’s words, unable to believe that Kristin is a single mother. "Are you serious? Kristin is a single mother?" Ophelia asked skeptically. "Yes, she is. Here’s proof that she has a daughter who is six years old." Parker handed her a document. Without hesitation, Ophelia took the document and began to review it, a creepy smile spreading across her face. "This is her daughter?" Ophelia asked, pulling out a picture of a cute little girl from the envelope. "Yes. Her name is Kathryn Santiago, but for now, she is not in Glenwood with Kristin’s parents." "Then where is she?" Ophelia inquired. "According to my research, she is staying with Kristin’s best friend in Singapore. Her best friend’s name is Romina, and she works as a nurse there while taking care of Kris
Kristin grinned at Richard’s words and quickly got out of bed. “Where are you going?” Richard asked as she headed for the door. “I’ll be back,” she said with a smile. Kristin left the room and returned holding a nylon bag with a ball anklet sealed inside. “That’s the gift you got from the department store, right? I thought you said you’d gotten rid of it?” Richard’s eyes were on her. “I didn’t literally throw it away; I just disposed of it from you,” she smiled. "Why are you showing it to me?" he asked calmly. "I just want to know if you've really conquered your fear of jangling sounds." "Firefly, you can’t—" "I promise to get rid of it if you’re still triggered by it," Kristin said, raising her right hand as if making an oath. Richard looked at her but didn’t say a word. "Should I?" Kristin asked, attempting to unseal the ball anklet. Richard stared at the ball anklet and slowly nodded. He usually avoids letting jangling sounds reach his ears, but now he wants to face his
Lewis grabbed Kristin’s hair forcefully, and she screamed, trying to break free from his strong grip. “Aren’t you going to save your wife? I already have her wrapped around my fingers,” Lewis mocked Richard, showing off his loose tooth and looking like a cartoon villain. Richard tried to stand, but the sound from the ball anklet made him fall back to the ground. “Let me go! Mr. Grouchy!” Kristin’s voice cracked as she tried her best to break free from Lewis’s grasp. Her heart ached seeing Richard in such a pitiful state. He couldn’t move, and Ophelia’s torment with the ball anklet only intensified his distress. “Come on, Richard! Show us what you’ve got! You always act so dominant and powerful, but you’re just an ordinary man afraid of a mere jangling sound. Get on your feet!” Ophelia taunted. “You evil wretch! Stop being evil!” Kristin screamed, but her world almost crumbled when Lewis pressed a knife to her neck. Kristin stopped breathing, and to make it worse, Richard was st
After a pleasant chat with Julio, Kristin sat patiently, waiting for Richard to come pick her up as promised. A man approached her in Julio’s living room and bowed. “Richard sent me to you.” “Why? Is he not coming to get me?” she asked. “He’s busy at the hotel with Luke. That’s why he wants me to take you home,” the man said with a smile. “I’ll just inform Mr. Julio that I’m leaving.” “No need for that. I’ll tell him when he comes out of the bathroom.” Ophelia appeared out of nowhere, and Kristin stared at her. “What are you still waiting for? Your presence sickens me, so leave,” Ophelia raged. With no other option, Kristin left with the man, a smirk forming on Ophelia’s lips. She called Lewis, and he picked up immediately. “He’s taking Kristin to you. I’ll join you shortly,” she said before ending the call with another smirk. “Where’s Kristin?” Julio’s voice asked, startling her. She took a deep breath and replied, “She left with Richard.” “He didn’t bother to say goodby
