Chapter One hundred and Twenty-Eight

Lauren's POV

As I stepped out of the police station, the afternoon sun hit my face, but I barely felt its warmth. My thoughts were swirling, churning with all the new information Detective Rhodes had just given me.

I needed answers. I couldn’t keep chasing shadows. I pulled out my phone and scrolled to find Damien’s number. I hesitated for a moment, my thumb hovering over the screen, before finally pressing the call button. The phone rang twice before he answered.

“Lauren,” Damien’s voice was cautious, as if he was bracing himself for whatever I was about to throw at him for the umpteenth time.

“Damien,” I replied. “I need to ask you something, and I need you to be honest with me.”

There was a pause on the other end, and I could almost hear the gears in his mind turning. “What is it?”

I swallowed hard, trying to steady my nerves. “Katarina… Was there anyone apart from Santino who would have wanted revenge for her death?”
