(Emily’s POV).
"I will never love a woman like you, Emily," he said suddenly in the silence of the car.
His voice was so cold and I felt like I was being directly humiliated by him. After all, I didn't expect him to love me.
"I know," I replied.
"So I'll just emphasize that no feelings should be involved in this marriage."
I sighed heavily because I was feeling so sad all of a sudden. It wasn't just because of my situation, but because I was marrying a man who had turned cold so quickly.
His tone which sounded so scary left me speechless.
And once at his office, we got out of the car and he looked at me and sighed.
"Chris is here, so come into my office," he said.
I nodded and followed him into his office where a man dressed in a suit with glasses was waiting. He smiled at us and even shook hands with me. He looked kind … I guessed.
As soon as I sat down in front of Chris, I saw Mike just sitting in his own chair, looking at me intensely and that made me feel nervous.
And so Chris began to explain the contents of the contract.
"Miss West, here you have officially become the wife of Mr. Mike. You will only be his wife in writing for reasons that cannot be explained here. But you're also not allowed to be around any man other than Mr. Mike."
"Alright," I said with tension and resignation.
"Then in exchange for your willingness to marry Mr. Mike, you will get material facilities such as credit cards, money, your father's treatment, and such, and especially Mr. Mike will help you take back your company to be in your hands again. I believe he already told you so."
I nodded and looked at Mike who was still staring at me without speaking.
"And lastly, your marriage will only be three years old from the time you sign this contract. If anything happens outside of this agreement, then you and Mr. Mike can discuss it together," he explained, ending. "One more thing, this marriage is confidential from Mr. Ben, his nephew."
I picked up the pen and signed the contract without thinking. I thought this was what was best for me and especially for my father.
"Okay, I think that's all done," Chris said. "I'll send a copy of this data to your email, sir."
As soon as Mike left, I stood up and said goodbye to Mike. "Thank you, Mike. You're my savior."
"Come here," he said.
I approached him, still feeling humiliated by the contractual arrangement that really hurt me. But now he was my husband, after all, I'd often been taught by my mother that I should respect my husband, no matter what.
He then took out his wallet and handed me his credit card.
"For you. Use it as much as you want, especially for your father. The rest, regarding your father's company, I'll start after this," he said.
I took it freely, feeling like a hired woman based on a contract but this was who I was now.
"Thanks again, Mike. I'm going to the hospital again."
"Take care."
I walked out of his office with a pounding feeling and while in the car, I cried as much as I could. I was relieved that I really had to live my life as it was now because I really had no way out.
Suddenly my cell phone rang and Linda came back to report that Ben was going to expel her from the company. I went straight to my father's office and found Jane throwing Linda's things around.
I immediately became angry and raged to my core because she was really sneaky and evil to have done all this.
"What are you doing?! You have no right to expel her!" I yelled at Ben.
"She's useless! She's your accomplice and I don't want to hire your people!" Jane yelled this time.
I was really on the verge of a rage that had built up into one. Both Jane and Ben were a pair that had ruined me and I would never forget.
"This is my company!" I shouted.
"You own nothing, Emily! Remember that! It's all mine! And just so you know ... do you remember the incident where the hordes of men teased you, harassed you?!"
I immediately fell silent when she found out about the incident five years ago ... I, who had buried it, remembered it again because it was the first time I was harassed by a gang of men who looked classy but had stupid minds.
"You remember?!" she even seemed to mock me, almost smiling slyly at my surprise.
"How did you ... know?" I asked with my breathing ragged.
She chuckled and showed her teeth as he laughed. "Of course, I knew. Because Ben is the mastermind. He's been trying to play his drama so that he can become yours and control your property until this time he succeeded!"
My eyes widened in shock at the truth. The truth was that I had absolutely no idea why that gang of men were harassing me all of a sudden.
I slapped Ben hard and he slapped me back, hurting me severely.
"That's for a woman who falls in love with your savior so easily!" he said and spat at my side.
"Argh!" I yelled in annoyance, going so crazy that I hit him as much as I could and also hit Jane no matter if she was also a woman.
"Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!"
Then security came to restrain me but I tried to escape their grasp because I really hated them.
All this time Ben really manipulated me. He was the most manipulative man I had ever met in my life and Jane was even worse!
I really hated them, especially Ben! He was the cause of the trauma I went through five years ago! He really was a man without a conscience.
"Let go of me! Let go of me!" I cried.
"Take her out!" Ben ordered.
When I was actually kicked out of my father's company, I burst into tears. My resolve really grew stronger that I would get back this company in front of me with the man who was now my husband.
(Emily’s POV).“Can you pick me up now? At my father's office?” “I will be right there.”“I'm waiting outside.”Yes, the person I called was my husband, Mike. He always told me that whenever I needed him, I could call him. And now, I was trying to rely on him.My broken heart felt like it was breaking into pieces. The life I had hoped for was not what I had planned, and I even had to marry a man who was quite far away from me.His car stopped right in front of me and when I was about to open the front passenger door, he got out and opened the door for me.“Thank you.” I got inside after giving him a small smile. As soon as the car started, my heart skipped a beat. Ben—my asshole ex-boyfriend—rarely even opened the car door for me. He did do romantic things, but it was painful to remember that it was all just a drama he was acting out.“Did something happen to you?” he asked quietly when I didn't say anything.“Yes. That nephew of yours is sneaky.” I didn't hesitate to tell him how I
(Emily’s POV)."You didn't go straight to see him?" I asked as he opened the car door."I wanted to see how your father is doing first."We walked in together and I thought he'd go straight away. But I didn't realize that he even wanted to visit first before went away. When I was about to reach my father’s infirmary, I was surprised to see two men dressed in black suits and glasses, standing by the door. I immediately approached them and asked because I was worried. "Who are you?!" I was afraid that they might be Ben or Jane's men, keeping me from going inside. Then I realized they were bowing in front of me, but when I heard the word 'Boss' I knew it was Mike they meant.I looked at Mike who was behind me, just silent and acting cool. "Is this your men?" I asked him. There was a slightly calm tone before he answered. He nodded and looked at me. "This is just in case Ben or Jane come here. So they won't come inside. They will keep on guard for your father.”At that moment I was comp
(Emily’s POV)."Why are you talking to Ben like that?" I wanted to know the answer when he came to pick me up and take me home."What part?""Your aunt?" I was slightly mocking, but hopefully, he wouldn't take it seriously. He gave me a crooked smile and clucked. I heard the sound of his heavy breathing, it was obvious that he was a heavy smoker too. But physically, he looked cool and fairly young for his face with a much older age than me."And you ended the call right away," I added. Then he looked at me for two seconds and refocused on his driving. "Are you angry, Mrs. Johnson?"Ugh, it made my heart flutter to hear that question followed by him calling me by his surname. It was a bit much for a transaction between relationships. Especially since he himself had denounced this marriage as just business, no more."Why?" I asked back to the first question."Because I want to make him curious and show him that I'm normal.""He thinks you're not normal?" "Hmm, not really. It's just tha
(Emily’s POV).It was like I was trapped by my own rejection until he proposed a choice that weighed heavily on me. It was a dilemma even though I knew he meant it as a joke."Let's put aside the things that shouldn't happen, Mike. You said all this is just a transaction like a seller and a buyer, right?" That was my response, trying to sound as normal as possible even though I was quite shaky."That's true, but you must have missed something from the agreement you signed, Emily."I frowned, not understanding what he meant. "What do you mean?""You can check it later at home, I've sent a copy to your email, right?"My heart pounded, wondering what I hadn't read and missed. I didn't read the agreement letter carefully back then because I wanted things to move quickly."Then we'll go home now," I said in a hurry.Unfortunately, Mike didn't even get up from his chair when I did. He seemed calm and even relaxed in his place. I immediately shot him an astonished look."What?""You're in a
(Mike’s POV)."What's wrong, Ben?" It had been a month and he was pretty tense and complained to me a lot until he finally asked to see me. I didn't have to guess because I knew what he was going through. This was one way of punishing him for being a very irresponsible boy."Of all the clients I've worked with, why did only two accept?! I don't understand where I went wrong!"He looked frustrated and it was like I had succeeded in breaking him slowly. For the sake of someone who had been filling my heart lately."Are you following my ways yet? You have to be good with your tongue, just like you did in your college when you played theater." He snorted and his breath hitched. His expression made his frustration very clear and I could only sit still and quiet, observing him."It seems like that's what I haven't done. I was just following your way, offering a lot of benefits at the beginning—I mean, so that they would immediately want to cooperate with me. But they didn't! They said Fra
(Mike’s POV)."Now that we're even alone, do you think you still can't tell me what you're feeling?" I sighed as she enthusiastically wanted to know what I was thinking. I chose to remain silent because then she would definitely not ask again, not even make a sound. And as I predicted, she was silent even when we reached the restaurant. I took her hand to go inside and chose a private place where no one would recognize us.Emily had always asked one thing of me, that as long as this plan was carried out-revenge and taking back her company, she didn't want Ben and his people to know.Of course, that wasn't a difficult thing for me to grant. But every time I was in a private place, I had never been able to think clearly since I thought I had feelings for her.Her hand felt soft and I deliberately hadn't let go of it, wanting to see how she would react. But as the minutes passed, she didn't even give any reaction. After ordering, only then did she look at me and give me another smile. I
(Emily’s POV)."Do you want to come or stay here?" I looked around. Even in the car, it was scary to see the crowd as if I were alone. I figured there was no harm in going with Mike, especially since he said it would only be for a short time and his friend was trustworthy."I'm coming with you."He got out and opened the door for me. He never forgot my hand to be held by him. His treatment so far has been perfect, just like a man a woman would want. But his confession just now ... was beyond my expectations. Honestly, my heart didn't even stop beating fast because of it, making me so nervous when I was around him.His hand never left mine. Even when waiting for his friend, he pulled out a chair for me to sit on while he stood by my side since we were inside the bar.The music was blaring and I tried to enjoy myself even though it wasn't my taste. At least I was not far away from him rather than in the car by myself."Hey, Mike!" A man's greeting voice sounded behind me. I turned my
(Emily’s POV)."Oh, I'm sorry, sir, I really didn't know there was someone inside."It was the doctor who was going to examine my father. It felt like I was saved, but on the other hand, I felt disappointed that what I was thinking about, didn't work out.I don't know how Mike felt, but he looked like he was angry and upset at the doctor for not saying anything to him.I also tried to concentrate on my father during the examination, trying to focus on him because it was the only thing distracting my mind while Mike was still around."How is he? I don't want to receive bad news because you and the others were hired to bring me good news," Mike asked as the doctor finished examining my father. The doctor smiled at Mike and me in turn. "Everything is fine. If Mr. West wakes up later, you can call me because I'll check on him again."That was the best news I'd heard since I'd been in the hospital. After all the time my father had been laid up, at least now I could hear that he was going t
(Emily’s POV).Two years had passed, and our lives felt fuller and richer than I’d ever dreamed. Christopher had grown into a bright and beautiful toddler, and every day, I watched him reach new milestones with a mix of joy and awe. His eyes sparkled with curiosity as he absorbed everything Mike and I taught him, and he surprised me constantly with the way he understood and remembered the little things. I couldn’t have imagined that I would ever feel this deeply fulfilled or so endlessly proud of the life we’d created together. This life has changed me, too. Just two years ago, I would never have thought I’d find myself married to Mike—my soul mate and, yes, someone much older than me and, admittedly, the uncle of my ex-fiancé. In the beginning, our bond had been a shocking, unexpected twist that seemed almost too good to be real. But with every shared moment, every quiet evening together and every early morning with Christopher, I felt the truth of our connection. I loved him wit
"Daddy's home, Buddy!"The words spilled from my mouth with excitement I couldn’t contain as I stepped into the living room, only to find Mike already cradling Christopher in his arms. The sight of them together was enough to melt my heart. Christopher, so small and fragile, seemed to sense Mike’s presence the moment he walked through the door, and now his tiny hand clung to Mike’s shirt, his bright eyes wide with curiosity.Mike looked up at me, his face softened with a quiet joy that made my heart flutter. "I think he knows I’m back," he said, his voice filled with wonder.I laughed softly, setting my purse aside. "Of course he does. There’s no way he could miss you."I watched them for a moment, unable to look away. There was something so natural, so effortless, about the way Mike held Christopher. It was as if they were two halves of the same heartbeat, already so attuned to each other that even a few days apart felt too long. I didn’t want to interrupt, so I slipped into the k
(Emily’s POV)."I miss you."The words slipped out before I could stop myself. The moment I saw Mike step through the airport gate, every ounce of restraint I’d held over the past few days just melted away. I practically threw myself into his arms, wrapping him in a hug so tight I thought I might never let go.Mike’s hands slid around my waist, pulling me even closer, and I felt his warm breath against my ear. “I missed you too, more than you know,” he murmured, his voice low and husky. There was a rough edge to his tone, a subtle hint of all the things he wasn’t saying aloud. Before I could respond, his lips were on mine, his kiss hungry, demanding, like he was making up for every moment we’d spent apart. My hands slipped up to his shoulders, fingers clinging to the fabric of his shirt as the airport, the people, everything faded around us. It was just him and me, our unspoken longing filling the space between us until it overflowed. Finally, reluctantly, we broke apart, our bre
(Emily’s POV)."Don't cry, Boy. I'm right here," I cooed softly, bouncing Christopher lightly in my arms. His tiny face was scrunched up, cheeks flushed as he let out another wail, the sound piercing in a way that tugged at my heart.I felt a pang of helplessness, a familiar ache that surfaced whenever I couldn’t seem to calm him. Normally, when Mike was here, Christopher barely fussed. I liked to think it was because he sensed the balance and warmth that Mike’s presence brought. And now, that steadiness was gone, at least for a few days. I could only imagine how strange it must feel for Christopher to have half of his usual world missing."Shh, it’s okay. I’m here. We’re going to be just fine,” I murmured, trying not to let my own frustration leak into my tone.Despite my efforts, his cries only grew louder, his little hands curling into tight fists. I could feel my patience thinning, a creeping sense of unease mingling with the exhaustion that came from trying to soothe him on my
(Emily’s POV)."Take care of yourself, Mike. Call me as soon as you land," I said softly, feeling the weight of his upcoming absence settle over me.Mike nodded, his eyes meeting mine, as he gently cradled my face in his hands. "I will. And don’t worry, you’ll hear from me as soon as I’m down." He leaned in and pressed his lips to my forehead, his kiss lingering, soft and warm. Then, his mouth found mine, and I melted into him, letting myself be consumed by the kiss. It was longer, deeper than usual, as if neither of us wanted to let go. I could feel his unspoken promise in that kiss—a reassurance that he’d come back to me, always. The sound of his assistant’s voice cut through the air, snapping us back to the present. "Boss, it’s time to take off."Mike broke the kiss with a soft sigh, resting his forehead against mine momentarily. "I love you, Emily," he said, his voice filled with a warmth that wrapped around my heart.I managed a smile, my voice trembling slightly as I replied
(Mike’s POV)."Emily, I’ll be heading out on a business trip for a week. Want to come with me?" I asked, hoping to have her by my side for those seven days. Being away from her, from us, even for just a week, felt heavier than it used to. I just hope she wanted to come to me.She gave me a soft, apologetic smile. “Since having Christopher, I feel like I should stay around the house more,” she said, her hand instinctively reaching up to rest over her heart. “He’s so young, Mike. I don’t want him to wake up without his mom around.”I nodded, suppressing the pang of disappointment. It wasn’t as if I didn’t understand. Ever since Christopher had come into our lives, everything had changed—Emily had changed, and for the better, in so many ways. She was the embodiment of patience, grace, and care, and I was a fool to ever try and pull her away from that.“That’s fair,” I said with a grin, leaning down to kiss her cheek. “But,” I added, voice soft, “just remember, let me know if you head t
(Mike’s POV).The evening came too soon, and before I knew it, Emily and I were heading to the Johnson family home for yet another one of these "family dinners." They had never been a tradition before, at least not until Emily and I got married. Now, it felt like some unspoken agreement that we’d all gather regularly, whether I wanted to or not. The whole situation made me question things, wondering why we suddenly needed to meet so often when, in the past, we’d been perfectly fine keeping to ourselves. The irony wasn’t lost on me.Emily squeezed my hand, noticing the tension in my grip as we pulled into the driveway. “Remember, not everything needs to be faced with emotions,” she murmured gently, giving me a smile that made me feel as though we were the only two people in the world. “Tonight is just another dinner. We’ll get through it.”I nodded, taking a breath to calm myself. She was right; Emily had this calming effect on me, something I’d never known I needed until I found he
(Mike’s POV).“You aren’t mad at me? For not telling you about my visit to my father’s?”Emily’s question pulled me out of my thoughts, her voice soft yet searching as she looked up at me. I couldn’t help but smile as I shook my head, reaching to touch her cheek, letting my thumb trace the gentle curve there. Her expression held a touch of worry, but I could see something deeper beneath it—trust, maybe. A need for reassurance that ran deeper than the question she’d just asked.“Not at all,” I murmured, my voice low. Jimmy had told me she’d visited him, and, of course, I knew that meant Ben had been around. It wasn’t exactly a thought I enjoyed. There was still a part of me, small but insistent, that flared with jealousy, picturing Emily in the same space as him. But I wasn’t about to let that ruin this moment. I trusted her. She tilted her face up, catching my gaze with her eyes, which sparkled with a warmth that made everything else fade away. I lifted her chin gently, leaning do
(Emily’s POV).“Why don’t you give up, Ben?”My voice cut through the gentle hum of the garden, breaking the tranquility as I stepped toward him. Ben was hunched over, hands full of grass clippings as he tended to the flowerbeds in my father’s yard. His head jerked up at my voice, his face creased in mild surprise. Clearly, he hadn’t expected me to show up here, and certainly not to confront him.The annoyance simmered in my chest as I walked closer, a dull ache pushing me to get the words out, to speak my mind finally. Every time I saw him here, every time I knew he was just around the corner from my life with Mike, it gnawed at me like an open wound.Ben stood up slowly, straightening to his full height, wiping his hands on his jeans. “Emily,” he said, his voice calm but wary. “I didn’t think you’d come here just to see me.”“I came here to ask why you haven’t disappeared from my life,” I replied, my tone sharper than I’d intended. “After everything, why not just… give up?”He loo
