Two days later and still there was no news for Jane. There were no more sightings of little girls humming the ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ tune and neither were there any more photos of her coming in strange white envelopes. There was nothing. Nada. It was as if the sender had disappeared from the face of the earth. Jane frowned, had it all been a bad dream?
“Jane? Jane? Earth to Jane?” Daniel tugged at her hand from his office chair, drawing her attention away from the door and back to him.
“Why do you keep looking at the door?” he asked when she finally turned her gaze back to him.
I’m waiting for another letter…
“Oh, just admiring your timber door is all,” she replied with gritted teeth. Boy, she was a pathetic liar, but Daniel didn’t mind. He yanked her hand and pulled her down, nestling her on his lap.
“Are you nervous about the Interior Design competition?” he asked, placing a hand at the back of her neck, sensually massaging them.
They were finally alone. Daniel Winters had no intention of losing control, but the woman who sat before him with shades of pink dusted on her face turned him on to the point of no return. She looked back up at him, her eyes filled with uncertainty but she nodded her head and pressed her lips together. She looked nervous, scared even but he would take all that negativity away and fill her with only ecstasy. He went on his knees, slowly unbuttoned her dark green blouse and pushed it down past her creamy shoulder along with the strap of her lacy black bra. It matched the underwear that he had pulled off earlier on. He felt her stiffen as he yanked down her bra, exposing two full moulds and extremely erect nipples. Seeing her sitting so vulnerably in front of him with her hands tied up and blouse hanging off her shoulder made him want to throw her back onto his desk and fuck her. Hard. Daniel’s primal instinct threatened to take over but he fought to tam
Standing in one of the cubicles of the washroom, Jane straightened her spare blouse and tucked its hem neatly into her skirt. It was a good thing she’d brought an extra set of office wear to work, she had always been worried that her boobs would leak milk and today, she had finally put her spare attire to good use.A tiny smile lifted the corners of her mouth as she secured the last button on her light blue blouse, the lingering touch of Daniel’s mouth on her body still very much in her mind. Never in her wildest dream did Jane ever think that having sex in the office would be so exhilarating. It felt as if she had opened up Pandora's box and discovered the secrets of the Kama Sutra. Things like these were only supposed to happen in movies or erotic novels! When he kissed her, she had felt like she was on a puff of clouds, floating over the most beautiful landscape filled with daydreams. But more importantly, he had whispered the three magic words to her ea
MINUTES BEFORE ‘THE KISS’Daniel stormed out of the elevator and his eyes narrowed into murderous slits as he scanned the crowd for Wayne and Roxanne. How dare Wayne pull the rug from under his legs like this? And to think he had lost his sleep because of Wayne. He had trusted his cousin! But Wayne was nowhere to be seen, instead, Daniel was swarmed by the suffocating press, all trying to get a piece of him.“Mr Winter! Mr Winters! How do you feel collaborating with your ex-wife?”Flash! Snap! Flash! His mouth twisted into a scowl.“Mr Winters! Look here!”Snap! Flash! Snap!“Mr Winters! Are you divorcing your new wife for Roxanne Grey?”Standing in the middle of the crowd was Roxanne in a barely there dress with her arms held high up like a prizefighter. Roxanne was gorgeously gross and a year ago, Daniel had courted her based on the excuse that she had an ‘interesti
Jane sat alone in Wayne’s office. It was big and airy, just slightly smaller than Daniel’s but whereas the walls of Daniel’s office were filled with countless plaques and awards, Wayne’s office walls were adorned with simple but breathtaking photos of his travels throughout the world. There was one of Wayne in the middle of a forest filled with lush green bamboo trees that seemingly shot all the way up to the great blue sky, another had a view of a golden sunset as waves crashed onto a lighthouse by the sea and yet another of the great Sphinx. This one had Wayne all bundled in a shawl squinting his eyes and grinning happily into the camera. Looking at the photos, Jane realized how little she knew about Wayne Winters. Judging by his appearance, she had thought of him as more of an indoors man but apparently, she was wrong.Never judge a book by its cover, she scolded herself inwardly. Yes, just as how you misjudged Wayne, you must have also
Marie stood outside the Winters Architecture massive twenty storey office building. She was sandwiched among a crowd of spectators wondering what the commotion was all about. In retrospect, Marie had come to see Jane, well, ask her for money was more like it. She had unfortunately used up most of her one million funds by then and was hoping to ask for more. After all, her stepdaughter was now the darling wife of Daniel Winters. THE Daniel Winters of Winters Architecture. She pressed her hands to her cheeks to suppress a giggle. This was all too good to be true.A young girl in a neon yellow tank top accidentally stepped on her high heels and Marie let out a blood piercing howl.“Hey! Watch it! You just stepped on my Jimmy Choos!” she shrieked, looking down at her expensive red pumps in horror. Her fist in the air, she shouted, “Do you know who I am?”The young girl took one look at her and popped chewing gum into her mouth. “Look gr
Daniel and Jane stood in the elevator, hand in hand with silence hanging in the air. But the touch of her hand spoke volumes, it represented the unspoken trust that Jane had in him and that alone was more than enough for Daniel. He gave her hand a light squeeze and she tore her eyes away from the elevator door to look at him. Daniel returned her gaze. A few strands of her hazel locks hung over her right cheek, near her eye and instinctively Daniel reached out and brushed it away and she smiled at him. But the smile that graced her face faded the moment they reached the lobby and the elevator door slid open.“JANE!”Daniel cringed at the high pitched scream of Jane’s stepmother. The pompous woman bulldozed her way through the queue of people in front of the elevator and jumped into the rectangular metal box. The elevator groaned under her weight and for a moment, Daniel had a crazed vision of the pulley system and cables failing and the elevator
Jane was indeed walking on eggshells. She couldn’t bring herself to talk to Daniel about ‘them’. Wait, was there even a ‘them’? Jane wasn’t sure anymore, especially not after listening to Wayne’s parting words. And to think people said women were complicated. She couldn’t wrap her mind around Daniel Winters at all. One moment he was all over her body and telling her he loved her and the next moment he was kissing his ex wife. And not to mention the surprise hug in the lift. What was that for? To feel her boobs and ass? She wrinkled her nose and took a deep breath before forcing the door to the master bedroom open. And sure enough the man’s mood had shifted yet again. That guy had more mood swings than a women with menses. Daniel Winters stood over the bed naked waist up with hands yanking the roots of his hair. The muscles on his body rippled as he tore through the bed, flinging jewels and diamonds aside all the while flooding the room with feral blasphemy. “
Daniel Winters was busy for most of that morning, rushing from one meeting to another and because of that, Jane was very much left to her own devices. She had completed her tasks for that morning, from filing the papers to helping with the photocopying to running errands and buying coffee for the interior design team and finally to feeding little Timmy. And now, she was quite free. But her mind was not. On the contrary, her brain was working on overdrive. How on earth was she going to fork out one million in two days? If she failed, Daniel would stand to lose everything he worked so hard for, and she could not bear to see it happen. Jane knew how hard he worked to keep his mother’s inheritance intact. For him to lose it would be akin to losing his life itself. One million….one million….one million. She couldn’t just waltz to a bank and demand a loan. What could she offer as collateral? Timmy’s pacifier? They’d throw
Daniel Winter’s heart was a vortex of confusion and complex emotions. There was fear, sorrow, grief and anger all coming together at once and in many respects, it was like a roller coaster ride through a darkened tunnel. The mourning and grieving were great, and the fear of living a life without Jane was very pronounced. Then there was pain…so much pain that it felt as if his heart had been pierced with a poisoned sword a hundred times over. Through his tears, Daniel gently lowered Jane onto the ground and shifted his gaze at the man, to the enemy who had preyed on Jane and took everything that he loved from him. “You….YOU!” Daniel roared and leapt into the air, lashing out at Logan with a hammerlike claw. He landed a blow, smashing the side of Logan’s head and brought a string of stars to the man’s vision. Logan tumbled backwards and hit the apartment’s wall with such an incredible force he collapsed to the floor. “YOU BASTARD!” Daniel climbed on top of Loga
Daniel slipped Jane’s phone into his pocket. It was then he noticed an odd odour that smelt like a cross between burnt plastic and flowers at the same time. The smell was extremely nauseating and giddy.Quickly he made his way out the apartment and into the corridor and was trying to locate Jane while warding off a strange scent when suddenly, the blast of a gun shot louder than the rolling thunder rang through the darkened halls. The sound was deafening, and instinctively, Daniel brought both hands to his ears. His eyes widened in both surprise and fear. What the heck was that? And the first persons that came to his mind were both Jane and little Timmy.“Jane! Timmy!’ he shouted, whirling around trying to identify the source from which the blast had come from. Behind him, the door next to Jane's unit opened and an old lady with frizzy permed hair and extremely thick glasses popped her head out.“What the fuck is that? Is it Word W
MOMENTS BEFORE THE ROAR OF THE THUNDER…The gods must have heard Jane’s cry for mercy that day, for right before Logan could pop the button of her jacket, his very own phone began to ring to what else? Bobby McFerrin's ‘Don’t worry, be Happy’ tune of course.“Hey, Milo! Yeah man, I was just about to call you. I’ve got the money.” He rubbed at his nose again and scratched the base of his throat as if it irritated him. “So you’d better give me my nose candy soon. I’m running low on my stock.”Jane’s eyes widened. He’s on crack cocaine! No wonder he smelt so strange! The man’s a junkie!“Yeah…I got me a big fish,” Logan continued and chuckled. He got up from his crouching position, seemingly having lost his interest in the pursuit of physical pleasures and walked out of the room, leaving Jane lying on the stone-cold floo
Daniel blinked as he stared at the phone and took a few deep breaths. If that Philip Summers or Logan or whatever his bloody name was dared to harm even one strand of Jane’s hair, he would personally wring the guy’s neck himself. But what consumed Daniel was not anger, rather it was a gutwrenching fear. It latched upon him the moment he heard Jane’s muffled screams through the phone. God, please let her and Timmy be okay. The taxi driver peered at Daniel through the rearview mirror and cleared his throat. “Sir…are we still heading towards Mangrove Apartment? Shouldn’t we get you to the hospital instead? Your hand’s kinda mangled.” Daniel looked at his bloodied fist. Blood dripped onto the upholstery and his mind started to play tricks on him. It was his fault, if only he hadn’t pushed her away, if only he had kept her safe! What if the bastard bled her like how his hand bled? Stop thinking nonsense! He groaned and sh
Jane opened her eyes to darkness, pitch black darkness and the first thought that crossed her mind was her child.“Mmph! MMMPH!!!!!”Both her hands and ankles were bound to the back of some wooden chair with what felt like cable ties and she was gagged with a piece of damp smelly cloth in dire need of a good wash. It was pointless to struggle, but she did so anyway, cutting her own skin in the process.Where was Timmy? Was he alright? The thought of her child consumed her every thought as she continued in her relentless struggle to free herself. As she did, her eyes began to adjust to the darkness, allowing her to see the outline of the room and the furniture around her. A long desk filled with trays, plastic bottles and silhouettes of strange-looking machinery took form as her irises familiarized themselves with the darkness. The darkroom! I’m in his apartment!Jane rocked the chair left to right in an attempt to topple
Daniel stepped out of his office building just as the clock struck nine and stepped into his car only to realize that his cousin, Wayne had hijacked the driver’s seat.“What? Did your new business venture go bust? Are you driving for a living now?” Daniel could not help but shoot sarcasm at the man behind the wheel. Wayne turned around, resting his elbow on the armrest and sighed. He looked tired too with dark rings behind his glasses. Not that Daniel fared any better, they both looked like pandas right now. Sexy hot pandas with six-packs.Wayne cleared his throat. “I came to apologize.”Daniel leaned against the backseat, crossing his arms. “Oh wow, confession of the century. I’m impressed.”Another sigh came from the front and Wayne revved the engine. Frowning, Daniel asked, “Where are we going?”“To Jane’s apartment.”“The heck we are.”&ldquo
Everything fell into place. The apartment, the darkroom, the photos… Jane stared at Logan as he continued smiling with a look that made him seem like he wanted to eat her alive. If sadism had a face, then Logan Summers would be the perfect poster boy for it. “Hello Logan,” Jane greeted him back in a steady voice but deep inside, she wanted to kick herself for not recognizing him. How could she have missed those icy blue eyes? They were the same as Timmy’s! Her heart hammered in her chest and she held her child tighter. “Come, come. The food is turning cold. We must eat them while they are still warm. Logan, I made you your favourite pie.” Jane’s eyes flew from Mrs Woolworths to Logan as he shut the door behind him with a kick of his leg. The old woman was obviously unaware of her nephew’s hideous crimes and started to usher them both to her tiny dining table by the window. Jane took in a deep shaky breath and forced a smile at the older woman. “Mrs Wo
Jane buttoned up her coat and was just about to carry little Timmy from his cot when the doorbell rang. Her eyes fell on the door and her eyebrows knitted together. Surely it wasn’t Wayne Winters? She did not want to see his face ever again. But her feet had a mind of their own and soon, Jane found herself standing in front of her own door and peering through the peephole. It was the old lady from next door. With a huge exhalation of pent up breath, she quickly unbolted her door.“Hello Mrs Woolworths,” Jane greeted the ageing widow. They had spoken a few times before and Jane had found the old lady warm and friendly. Mrs Woolworths looked up from her extremely bent posture and flashed Jane a toothy grin through her thick-rimmed glasses. Years of osteoporosis and arthritis had shrivelled her like a withering plant but her megawatt smile brought a much needed warmth to Jane’s heart and she welcomed the old lady into her humble abode.&ldqu
Daniel threw his phone at the wall, smashing his latest gadget against the plagues and flooded his office with an explosion of expletives. “Calm down Mr Winters. Anger won’t serve to help you in any way,” came the voice of a woman in her late forties. She leaned back against her seat and crossed her arms, tilting her head towards the plagues that thudded to the floor. With a sigh, Daniel slumped back into his swivel chair and slammed his fists against the table. The woman rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Mr Winters, I did not come here to see you throw a tantrum.” She tapped at his desk with a large brown envelope. “And I believe you should have listened to your wife on the phone. She sounded desperate.” Daniel felt a stab of anger. “Mind your own business.” “You were the one who sought for my aid Mr Winters, not the other way around. I helped you answer the phone and am merely relaying my observation to you. Anyways, I’ve brought the info
