The doorbell rang and Jane hurried over to the private elevator of the penthouse juggling little Timmy and a baby bottle in one hand and a diaper in the other. A quick check through the security camera told her that Wayne had arrived and she let him in.

“Wayne, you’re early!” She dragged her eyes up and down his attire, feeling her jaw drop a little. “And….you’re wearing a tuxedo…” Her words trailed off as she took in the sight of him.

Wayne stood in front of her looking every inch of a prince in a black and white tux, carrying a bouquet of lilies in one hand and a mini luggage bag in the other. She looked down at her simple garb of plain white tee with Timmy’s spit and ripped jeans coated with milk stains before her head fell back in laughter. Little Timmy found his mother’s laughter infectious and joined her with gurgles of his own.

“I thought we were going to Mike’s diner,” she flashed a sheepish smile.

“I made reservations at The Hilton.”

“Oh wow, I didn’t think the rum was THAT strong!” Jane threw her head back and forced a laugh before taking yet another mouthful of ice cream. A part of her wished for Wayne to join her in the laughter as well but he remained as he was with an expression void of all humour. He kept looking at Jane silently and all too soon, she began to waver under his gaze.Oh shit…this is not turning out the way I expected it to….her subconsciousness whispered as she nervously took another spoonful of ice cream from the clear glass bowl.Think Jane…say something. Talk about the weather. Talk about Trump and Biden. Talk about Timmy’s poop. Anything! But the words got stuck in her throat.“I mean it, Jane. I fell for you a long time ago. I should have reached out to you first. Had I known what you went through, I would have looked for you and taken care of you. If only Daniel had not been one step ahead of me..

The grand penthouse was empty; void of Jane’s smiles and Timmy’s laughter. In fact, the place felt alien without their presence, it was like the harsh plains of the desert sands where nothing save for stark emptiness thrived. Daniel kicked off his leather shoes as soon as he stepped out of the elevator and stormed to Timmy’s room, not entirely sure what he was looking for. Something to prove Jane’s innocence perhaps? All around him the lights of the penthouse automatically turned on. Roxanne hummed as she followed a frantic Daniel into the baby’s room, nodding her head in approval when she saw the makeover. “Hmm…like what you’ve done with the place. Remember we used to do it against the wall? I’d be taking your cock into my mouth and –” “Shut up.” Daniel flipped off Timmy’s baby blue blanket, searched under the cot and rummaged through a wardrobe full of rompers and baby suits but found nothing. Nada. He had called the auction manager earlier on the drive bac

“Jane...”Her head jerked up from the car’s window. “Sorry,” she replied grimly and wiped away yet another tear that had escaped her eye. Little Timmy shifted slightly in her arms and fell back to sleep once more, unaware of the turmoil that was eating his young mother away. Jane hated herself there and then. Why couldn’t she defend herself back there? Why didn’t Daniel believe her? And why was he kissing Roxanne? What was she to him anyway? A plaything?“We’re here,” Wayne brought his car to a halt and Jane looked out the window of his Bugatti to see a beautiful townhouse with soft orange lights illuminating its roman carved pillars and ivy plants that crawled up its pristine white walls.“You live here?” she asked aloud, still peering out the window. After the fight with Daniel, Jane had nowhere to go. She had been too sick as a child to make any long-lasting friends and she didn&rsq

No one could sleep that night either. Daniel lay curled up in a fetal position on the floor of Timmy’s room after he kicked Roxanne out of his house. She had pouted, wiggled and jiggled her ample assets at him but one look from him was all it took to have her scampering off like a little mouse. Not far away, Jane tossed and turned in the great white bed of Wayne’s townhouse, looking out of the open window and counting the twinkling stars in the cloudless night sky. All she could think of was the hatred that filled Daniel’s eyes. Why was she grieving over a man who literally left her with scars? Was she so desperate for love that she had welcomed any imitation of it? Even the ones that came in the form of Daniel Winters? Jane did not know, she did not want to know.Wayne should have gone home, but he did not. Instead, he stayed in the seat of his car, gripping onto his steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white and he stared longingly at th

It was not a letter from Timmy’s bastard of a father. Rather, it was a letter announcing Jane’s miraculous win for the Interior Design competition. She had come in second and was thus awarded a letter of recognition as well as a cheque of two hundred grand; a great amount of money in Jane’s eyes.“Oh my God!” Pepper squealed, the corner of her eyes crinkling as she jumped up and down like a little girl who had been gifted a lifetime supply of lollipops. “You won!” Pepper continued in jovial celebration, pumping her fist in the air and stomping her feet like a gipsy dancing around a bonfire.Jane stood at Pepper’s desk holding the precious cheque in her hands wondering if this was all a dream. Despite all that had happened the night before, Jane had to smile. With the prize, she would be able to pay back some of the money she owed Wayne. Even better, she would also be able to find a rented room elsewhere. The two wo

Wayne was not entirely happy that Jane wanted to move out from his place, but she had made up her mind and there was no talking her out of it. So here she was, viewing a potential unit for rent in the middle of the day. Jane turned around, taking in with a glance of the sparse but tidy SoHo unit with a window that opened to the back of a twin apartment block. Basically, it was a room without a view but the rental was ridiculously cheap and the apartment was just a stone’s throw away from Wayne’s new office. Okay, so maybe it wasn’t exactly a stone’s throw away; in reality, it was more like fifty throws away but still this place was better than nothing. Plus Mike the office boy lived just a few floors up so at least she would have an acquaintance here.“As I was saying, Logan was kind enough to introduce me to this place last week and I’m telling you, Mrs Winters, you won’t be able to find a cheaper place than this,” Mike rambled

The superyacht was a sight for sore eyes. At a length of 156m, the floating vehicle housed not only a giant paddling pool but also a spa, saunas, gym and private cabins, each of which that came with balconies overlooking sparkling blue waves that bobbed gently under the setting sun. A jazz band played to Frank Sinatra’s “Fly me To The Moon” on the helipad as guests mingled freely around the pool.Daniel stood in the middle of the sundeck with a group of men, all eager to butter up to him but he ignored them, choosing instead to scan the yacht trying to catch a glimpse of Jane. She was coming, wasn’t she? Surely she wasn’t going to ghost him. Not a minute went by that he did not think of her.“Ah! Daniel Winters! You’ve arrived!” The jolly looking senator laughed and pushed his way into the middle of the group, giving Daniel a suffocating bear hug.Oof! The senator’s vice like grip put The Rock to shame.

The cabin door closed behind them and Jane stiffened at the sudden darkness that descended upon the room. A look at the balcony door told her that it was closed and the curtains were drawn shut.“My, my, “ Roxanne tsked, circling Jane slowly like a hawk closing in on its prey. “I thought after all the drama, you’d at least have the decency to stay away from Daniel.”Maybe I should throw up on her, Jane thought. “I did not steal from Daniel. You were the one feeding him all the bullshit.”Roxanne’s tattoed brows lifted in mockery but she did not reply. She left Jane standing in the middle of the room and flipped on the light switch. The abrupt brightness in the room made Jane wince and her stomach began to cramp. “Just give me the pills please, “ she muttered, hugging the edge of the cabin bed and swearing to herself that this was the last time she would ever get on a rocking boat. Daniel Winter’s heart was a vortex of confusion and complex emotions. There was fear, sorrow, grief and anger all coming together at once and in many respects, it was like a roller coaster ride through a darkened tunnel. The mourning and grieving were great, and the fear of living a life without Jane was very pronounced. Then there was pain…so much pain that it felt as if his heart had been pierced with a poisoned sword a hundred times over. Through his tears, Daniel gently lowered Jane onto the ground and shifted his gaze at the man, to the enemy who had preyed on Jane and took everything that he loved from him. “You….YOU!” Daniel roared and leapt into the air, lashing out at Logan with a hammerlike claw. He landed a blow, smashing the side of Logan’s head and brought a string of stars to the man’s vision. Logan tumbled backwards and hit the apartment’s wall with such an incredible force he collapsed to the floor. “YOU BASTARD!” Daniel climbed on top of Loga

Daniel slipped Jane’s phone into his pocket. It was then he noticed an odd odour that smelt like a cross between burnt plastic and flowers at the same time. The smell was extremely nauseating and giddy.Quickly he made his way out the apartment and into the corridor and was trying to locate Jane while warding off a strange scent when suddenly, the blast of a gun shot louder than the rolling thunder rang through the darkened halls. The sound was deafening, and instinctively, Daniel brought both hands to his ears. His eyes widened in both surprise and fear. What the heck was that? And the first persons that came to his mind were both Jane and little Timmy.“Jane! Timmy!’ he shouted, whirling around trying to identify the source from which the blast had come from. Behind him, the door next to Jane's unit opened and an old lady with frizzy permed hair and extremely thick glasses popped her head out.“What the fuck is that? Is it Word W

MOMENTS BEFORE THE ROAR OF THE THUNDER…The gods must have heard Jane’s cry for mercy that day, for right before Logan could pop the button of her jacket, his very own phone began to ring to what else? Bobby McFerrin's ‘Don’t worry, be Happy’ tune of course.“Hey, Milo! Yeah man, I was just about to call you. I’ve got the money.” He rubbed at his nose again and scratched the base of his throat as if it irritated him. “So you’d better give me my nose candy soon. I’m running low on my stock.”Jane’s eyes widened. He’s on crack cocaine! No wonder he smelt so strange! The man’s a junkie!“Yeah…I got me a big fish,” Logan continued and chuckled. He got up from his crouching position, seemingly having lost his interest in the pursuit of physical pleasures and walked out of the room, leaving Jane lying on the stone-cold floo

Daniel blinked as he stared at the phone and took a few deep breaths. If that Philip Summers or Logan or whatever his bloody name was dared to harm even one strand of Jane’s hair, he would personally wring the guy’s neck himself. But what consumed Daniel was not anger, rather it was a gutwrenching fear. It latched upon him the moment he heard Jane’s muffled screams through the phone. God, please let her and Timmy be okay. The taxi driver peered at Daniel through the rearview mirror and cleared his throat. “Sir…are we still heading towards Mangrove Apartment? Shouldn’t we get you to the hospital instead? Your hand’s kinda mangled.” Daniel looked at his bloodied fist. Blood dripped onto the upholstery and his mind started to play tricks on him. It was his fault, if only he hadn’t pushed her away, if only he had kept her safe! What if the bastard bled her like how his hand bled? Stop thinking nonsense! He groaned and sh

Jane opened her eyes to darkness, pitch black darkness and the first thought that crossed her mind was her child.“Mmph! MMMPH!!!!!”Both her hands and ankles were bound to the back of some wooden chair with what felt like cable ties and she was gagged with a piece of damp smelly cloth in dire need of a good wash. It was pointless to struggle, but she did so anyway, cutting her own skin in the process.Where was Timmy? Was he alright? The thought of her child consumed her every thought as she continued in her relentless struggle to free herself. As she did, her eyes began to adjust to the darkness, allowing her to see the outline of the room and the furniture around her. A long desk filled with trays, plastic bottles and silhouettes of strange-looking machinery took form as her irises familiarized themselves with the darkness. The darkroom! Daniel stepped out of his office building just as the clock struck nine and stepped into his car only to realize that his cousin, Wayne had hijacked the driver’s seat.“What? Did your new business venture go bust? Are you driving for a living now?” Daniel could not help but shoot sarcasm at the man behind the wheel. Wayne turned around, resting his elbow on the armrest and sighed. He looked tired too with dark rings behind his glasses. Not that Daniel fared any better, they both looked like pandas right now. Sexy hot pandas with six-packs.Wayne cleared his throat. “I came to apologize.”Daniel leaned against the backseat, crossing his arms. “Oh wow, confession of the century. I’m impressed.”Another sigh came from the front and Wayne revved the engine. Frowning, Daniel asked, “Where are we going?”“To Jane’s apartment.”“The heck we are.”&ldquo

Everything fell into place. The apartment, the darkroom, the photos… Jane stared at Logan as he continued smiling with a look that made him seem like he wanted to eat her alive. If sadism had a face, then Logan Summers would be the perfect poster boy for it. “Hello Logan,” Jane greeted him back in a steady voice but deep inside, she wanted to kick herself for not recognizing him. How could she have missed those icy blue eyes? They were the same as Timmy’s! Her heart hammered in her chest and she held her child tighter. “Come, come. The food is turning cold. We must eat them while they are still warm. Logan, I made you your favourite pie.” Jane’s eyes flew from Mrs Woolworths to Logan as he shut the door behind him with a kick of his leg. The old woman was obviously unaware of her nephew’s hideous crimes and started to usher them both to her tiny dining table by the window. Jane took in a deep shaky breath and forced a smile at the older woman. “Mrs Wo

Jane buttoned up her coat and was just about to carry little Timmy from his cot when the doorbell rang. Her eyes fell on the door and her eyebrows knitted together. Surely it wasn’t Wayne Winters? She did not want to see his face ever again. But her feet had a mind of their own and soon, Jane found herself standing in front of her own door and peering through the peephole. It was the old lady from next door. With a huge exhalation of pent up breath, she quickly unbolted her door.“Hello Mrs Woolworths,” Jane greeted the ageing widow. They had spoken a few times before and Jane had found the old lady warm and friendly. Mrs Woolworths looked up from her extremely bent posture and flashed Jane a toothy grin through her thick-rimmed glasses. Years of osteoporosis and arthritis had shrivelled her like a withering plant but her megawatt smile brought a much needed warmth to Jane’s heart and she welcomed the old lady into her humble abode.&ldqu

Daniel threw his phone at the wall, smashing his latest gadget against the plagues and flooded his office with an explosion of expletives. “Calm down Mr Winters. Anger won’t serve to help you in any way,” came the voice of a woman in her late forties. She leaned back against her seat and crossed her arms, tilting her head towards the plagues that thudded to the floor. With a sigh, Daniel slumped back into his swivel chair and slammed his fists against the table. The woman rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Mr Winters, I did not come here to see you throw a tantrum.” She tapped at his desk with a large brown envelope. “And I believe you should have listened to your wife on the phone. She sounded desperate.” Daniel felt a stab of anger. “Mind your own business.” “You were the one who sought for my aid Mr Winters, not the other way around. I helped you answer the phone and am merely relaying my observation to you. Anyways, I’ve brought the info
