Stephanie’s pov

The soft hum of my phone vibrating on the nightstand pulled me from the edge of sleep. For a moment, I thought about ignoring it, but then my curiosity got the better of me. I reached over, squinting at the screen in the dim light. It was a message from my spy.

With a sigh, I slipped out of bed as quietly as possible, careful not to wake Eric. His fragile health meant he needed every second of rest he could get. The last thing I wanted was his questions or, worse, his interference. My slippers barely made a sound on the plush carpet as I padded into my study and closed the door behind me.

The message was short and cryptic: “I’m at your balcony window. We need to talk.”

I stared at it for a moment, irritation bubbling up inside me. Of all the places to meet, he had to choose my home? I walked to the balcony window, pulling aside the curtain just enough to peek out. Sure enough, there he was, standing in the shadows like some second-rate thief.

With a huff, I unlocked th

Stephanie’s povShe shook her head vigorously, her hands flying up in protest. “Absolutely not. No way. Not in a million years. Do you have any idea what that man put me through? After everything, you think I’d just waltz back into his life like nothing happened?”“Yes,” I replied smoothly, leaning back in my chair and crossing my legs. “I do. Because you need the money.”Her face darkened, and for a moment, I thought she might throw the cup of coffee that had just been placed in front of her. “You think you can buy me off like that? I have some dignity, you know!”“Dignity doesn’t pay the rent, Alisha,” I said sharply, my tone cutting through her indignation. “Look around you. Look at your life. You’re drowning in overdue bills, and the only way you’ll get out of this mess is with my help. All I’m asking is for you to play a role. You don’t even have to like him.”She opened her mouth to argue, but I held up a hand to silence her. “I’m not asking for a lifelong commitment. Just long

I thought you'd be glad to see me.”“Happy,” I repeated, but let the word linger in the stillness of my office. “I’m not sure that’s the term I was thinking of.”She sighed and walked over to the seat on the other side of my desk, taking her time as she lowered herself into it and crossed her legs. “You’re never really one for change, are you?”I didn’t answer right away, instead using the opportunity to observe her. Alisha was here for a reason. Alisha never did anything without a reason. And as much as she looked like she had stepped directly out of an upscale martini party, the fact that she’d come uninvited to my office said this wasn’t a casual visit."What do you want, Alisha?" I finally asked, my tone sounded hard. She tipped her head to the side as if she was tr

Crawford’s povStephanie stepped up, until she was so close her nose all but touched mine. I could feel her breath on my skin. “You’re out of your league,” she warned, her voice dangerous. “Walk away, Crawford. Before it’s too late.”I didn’t blink; didn’t back down. “Not gonna happen.”We stood there for an eternity it seemed, neither one of us saying a word. Then Stephanie stepped back and looked at me with a cold blank stare. She opened the car door and sat down. “Suit yourself,” she said in her rehearsed cold voice. ” But don’t come running’ to me when you find out I was right!” The engine roared, the dust flew and she was gone.I stood there alone for a moment longer watching her move down the road before turning away from the garage. The air in the room was heavy with apprehension when I entered Eric’s home. That sterile smell of medicine and stagnant air seemed to grow stronger every time I visited, a testament to his failing health. He was sitting at his desk in that upholste

Crawford’s povShe laughed at me. "I love how direct you are, Crawford."I didn’t respond, my patience fading. But she took it as a cue to go on.“Let’s be real,” She continued, practically whispering now. “You and me, we’re the ones that should really be running this. My mom isn’t. That… Audrey chick—she’s nothing more than a figurehead.”I arched a brow. “Audrey is doing exactly what Eric appointed her to do. She’s more than capable.”Amelia waved her hand dismissively. “Capable, sure, but does she understand what Eric really wants? You know my mother and I have Eric’s best interests at heart.”I leaned forward, narrowing my eyes. “Is that what you call it? Because from where I stand, it looks more like the two of you are circling him like predators.”Her smile faltered, but only for a moment. She quickly regained her composure, leaning back in her chair. “I think you’re being a little dramatic, Crawford. All I’m saying is that you’d be better off working with us. Join my mother and

Audrey’s pov“Let me check,” the operator said. A couple minutes passed before she came back with the same answer. “I’ve searched our national and international databases, and this doctor isn’t licensed anywhere.”“Alright. Thank you.”I hung up, my heart pounding. This was the proof I was waiting for. I picked up my phone and dialed my good friend Detective Marcus Hill. I had known this man since college, and there wasn’t a person alive that I trust more than him in the law.“Marcus,” I said when he answered, “I need your help.”“What’s wrong, Audrey?” he asked in a worried tone.I told him everything—the doctor's sketchiness, the absent files on his license, and my theory about him possibly hurting Dad under Stephanie's orders. Marcus didn't interrupt once, but when I finally finished speaking, he sounded pissed.“This is serious, Audrey. If this guy is practicing medicine without a license and endangering lives, he needs to be stopped immediately.”“Exactly,” I said. “Can you help

No one needed to know mine and Audrey’s business but ours.Elena squinted at me like she didn’t buy it, but she dropped it. “Come in, come in. Sit down. You have so much catching up to do.”We made our way into the cozy living room, and she handed me a mug of coffee before collapsing onto the couch across from me. We caught up on the last few years of our lives in laughter and stories that, for a moment, I was sure nothing had changed. It felt so good to let go and be weightless again. But that wasn’t why I was here.“Elena,” I started, putting my mug down on the table. “I’m here because I need your help. It’s about Audrey’s father.”Her expression changed instantly, the playful look gone for the first time in as long as I could remember and replaced with a seriousness that seemed out of place. “What happened?” she demanded, leaning toward me.I told her everything—the doctor, the poison, how Eric had been getting wors

Stephanie’s pov"I... I don't think so," he said finally, and his tone gave me pause.I sighed loudly. I was already regretting hiring these incompetents. “Fine. I’ll handle it. Don’t call me unless someone is actually fucking dying.” I ended the call and dialed Dr. Barve’s number immediately, annoyed that I was even having to make this personal phone call, but my annoyance went deeper when his phone rang and rang and then clicked over to voicemail. I tried again with the same result, feeling myself become more irritated as my fingers drummed impatiently against the arm of the chair.Where in fact was he?Frustrated, I scrolled through my contacts and hit the number for his assistant. No answer. Great. What was wrong with everyone today? My frustration turned to unease as I realized that wasn’t like Barve at all. He was supposed to be reliable – especially now. With a sigh, I hit the number for my spy."Find Barve," I said. "Now."There was a moment's silence on the other end of the

Stephanie’s povI decided to visit Barve and know if there was any way in saving him.The police station was cold and smelled like sweat and sterilizer. I hated places like this; the air seemed to laugh at my love of high fashion and higher society by holding onto me as if it could keep me grounded in reality. But necessary or not, if I wanted to take back control of my life, I had to do this.I was led to the holding room, my heels echoing briskly on the hard tile floor as I navigated behind the lead officer. Doctor Barve was hunched on the steel bench, beyond his usual arrogance and distanced demeanor with a fusion of angst seen only in a man desperate for an escape. He glanced up from under his brows when he heard me drawing nearer, his face betraying an expression indicative of shock mingled with relief.“Stephanie,” he muttered under his breath as if no time were left to lose. “You’re here—”I folded my arms over my chest and tilted my head, studying him with mild disgust. “Wha

Author’s povThe police quickly surrounded Daniel, cuffing him as he groaned on the floor. Blood trickled from his nose, and his face was twisted in anger and humiliation.“You’ll regret this, Xander!” Daniel spat, glaring up at his brother.Xander leaned down, his expression calm but firm. “Regret? That’s something you should feel for all the lives you’ve ruined. It’s over, Daniel.”As Daniel struggled against his restraints, the head of police stepped forward. He pulled out a list of charges and began reading them aloud.“Daniel Clarkson, you are being charged with the following: the kidnapping of Mrs. Wright, the attempted murder of Xander Clarkson, embezzlement from your family’s company, obstruction of justice, and numerous other crimes. You’ll be facing a long time in prison.”Daniel’s face contorted with rage. “None of it is true!” he shouted. “This is a setup! You’re all working against me!”“Your corrupt cop was also seen running off and right now he’s willing to testify agai

Author’s povMrs. Wright sat in the dark room, straining her ears for the movements of her captors. It had been a few hours since they taken her from her old place and brought her to this new place, hours marked by terror and solitude and confusion. But something inside had changed that night. Something told her she couldn’t be captive anymore. With newfound resolve, Mrs. Wright steeled herself and tiptoed to the door. The house was still; her captors didn’t suspect a thing when they had gone to bed earlier. Mrs. Wright cautiously unlocked the door, afraid of its creaking as she turned the knob to let herself out into the night air that was cool and freeing. She was done hiding. This time, she was going to save herself. The road stretched before her was infinite in the dark. She knew that with each step she took away from her prison it was another opportunity to get to her son and get out a solution. Her heart was beating both in fear and anticipation of the worst. • Married To His CEO Brother   CHAPTER 136

Daniel’s povI stormed out of his office, hot blood rushed through my veins. How dare he? Who the hell does this man think he is? Some kind of a superhero coming to ‘save’ the company. He was going too far and asking too much. I got out of the company and headed for my car as I sat down there and leaned back in it. I was so angry I couldn’t hold myself back.My hands gripped tightly around my steering wheel; those knuckles were all white as if they were screaming ‘help!’ in some invisible way. In anger, I punched my steering wheel a couple of times before leaning back in my seat.I then turned the ignition and drove directly to the warehouse where I had everything under control—my men, my operations, and my future. It was a sanctuary of sorts for me, a place where I could reorganize my thoughts and plans without any distractions or disturbances. A couple of my men were already there when I arrived. They all stood up as soon as they saw me enter, feeling the unrest radiating off me. “

Audrey’s povI clearly remembered the drive to the cabin that morning. I’d driven so slowly, looking in the rearview mirror every few seconds to make sure I wasn’t being followed. The streets had been practically empty, but everything had felt still and foreboding because of it. When I had gotten to the place, I had parked a few hundred meters from the cabin itself, hiding my car behind some trees before continuing on foot. The closer I got to the cabin, the more uneasy I felt. Something was very wrong. The place looked abandoned—deserted—but it wasn’t just that. It was something else; something I couldn't explain.“Mrs wright?” I asked while staying at the door and knocking. I hoped no one would bash my head in as I opened it inwards as it groaned under my hand as I gave it a push so I could step inside. The sight that met my eyes made my stomach plummet. The entire cabin was in shambles. Furniture was flipped over, papers were strewn across the floor, and a faint acrid smell wafted

Xander’s povI sat in my office, the door closed behind me as I went through the financial reports once more. My anger simmered beneath the surface. It was bad enough that the company was in such a state, but the audacity of the board to act like nothing was wrong infuriated me. My father had worked too hard to build this company, and I wasn’t about to let it crumble under their watch—or Daniel’s.Just as I was contemplating my next move, there was a sharp knock on the door. Before I could answer, one of the board members stepped in, closing the door behind him. He was an older man, someone who had been with the company for decades, yet his face now looked pale and nervous.“Mr. Xander,” he started, his voice shaking, “I need to talk to you.”I reclined back in my chair, signaling for him to continue. “What is it?” I questioned, but I already knew he didn’t come here to help me with anything but to stress me.The man hesitated, and then he leaned forward a little. “I think you should

Xander’s povI was in my company office gazing at the files lying on my table. My secretary had compiled every possible document pertaining to the financial record of the company and I was growing more angry after going through it. How was it not tallying? Who drew this large amount of money, the supporting bills and receipts were in no record?I could see lots of money being removed from the company but there was no mention of them being used for the company again. Why was this a thing?I called for my assistance as she appeared before me.“Is this all?” I asked as she nodded.“Yes, Mr. Xander. I think this is all there is available in the system…”“You think?” I interrupted her as she gulped.“It is all I could find in the system.”I leaned back in my chair and drummed my fingers on my desk. “This doesn’t make any sense… Someone has been withdrawing money at absurd rates recently, and with no record of what it’s being used for? How the hell does that work?”She didn’t answer, but sh

Daniel’s povI smiled after hearing his voice. Xander, always so easy to rile up. “Calm down, baby brother,” I scoffed. Taking another sip of my drink as I got to my feet to face him. “I was merely conversing with her. No need to get your knickers in a twist.”He stepped closer, glowering. “I said, stay away from her.”I saluted him sarcastically and stepped back a pace or two. “Okay, okay. Chill out if it bothers you so much.”As I walked away, I glanced back at Xander over my shoulder. “You should really learn to relax,” I drawled, mocking him as much as possible. “It’s bad for your health, all this stress you carry around.”Walking through the doors out of the pool area with self-satisfaction rolling off me in waves, I didn’t care about Xander and his anger. Not when they were both going to be defeated very soon.Back in my room, I poured myself another drink and stared out the window. It was a clear blue night with stars in the sky, but I wasn’t looking at the sky or the stars or

Daniel’s povLola’s body went rigid and her face turned a shade of red that clashed horribly with her hair. “Audrey?” she screeched.“Yes,” I said, nodding. “Why would she do this to me?”I shrugged. “I don’t know. But she must have seen that maybe Xander was looking at you a certain way and she just wanted you out of the equation.”Lola laughed cynically, and shook her head. “Audrey is going to regret this.” She said, “She honestly believes that nobody is going to stop her? For real.”I said nothing, just letting her stew. If nothing else, getting angry at Audrey took her mind off what had happened. "Wow, you look like hell," I said, taking a step back from the chart."Gee, really? How would you have guessed?" she snapped and rolled her eyes at me.I smirked, leaning against the wall. “You’re lucky to be alive, you know.”Her glare seemed to darken at my words. “If your people were competent at making sure no harm came to you and I, this wouldn’t have happened in the first place!”

Audrey’s pov“No,” I said, just as firmly. “But we can’t do anything stupid either. Any wrong step in this thing and it could throw us all over the edge. We just found her, let’s be careful and tail her for a while while trying to know what’s going on.”He gave a long heavy sigh and rubbed his fingers across his forehead. His eyes looked miserable because he knew I was right."Let's think this through," I said softly, resting my hand on his arm. "We'll find a solution for her. But we have to do it right."Reluctantly, he nodded, but his shoulders drooped in defeat. "Okay," he whispered. "But we need to hurry. I don't think she can last much longer."I nodded with both relief and determination. ***Daniel’s povI was in the car already heading to the house when I got a call from my men. “Boss, we have a problem.”“What is it?” I growled while clutching the wheel.“Mrs. Wright brought a stranger into the house she is hiding in, and now that we’ve arrived, the person is gone.”I frowne
