“I think you heard me very well, Robert,” Mrs. Ford spoke with boldness. Even though she was almost choked by Robert last night, she was still not scared of him in the least. She had never been.
She headed towards one of the chairs in front of his fancy desk and sat down, waiting for him to respond.
Robert scoffed and then stared at his wife for a few seconds. “You have to be joking, Ava. The boy is my heir.” He reminded her.
“Yes, I know that. But sometimes, from the way you treat him, it makes me wonder if you know that.” Mrs. Ford flipped her hair gently and kept looking into the hard eyes of her husband.
“It’s complicated,” Robert looked away from his wife. He really did not want to get into a yelling match with her and hoped to God that she would drop this. There was no way he would just let Isaac fly across the world when he was being groomed to take over the family businesses and fortune.
“It’s really not. Isaac can still be the heir of the Ford fortune whether he’s here in South Africa or in America.” Mrs. Ford argued. “When the time is right, he could just come back.”
“No,” Robert made his decision. “The boy is not leaving.” He spoke with authority as he went back to working on his computer.
“Robert…” Mrs. Ford said in a warning tone, catching his full attention once again. “This is happening. Isaac’s leaving.”
“No, he’s f*cking not, so why don’t you just drop this and get out of my office,” Robert replied as he rose from his comfortable seat. His voice was strong and threatening, but Mrs. Ford did not even flinch, neither did she move a muscle.
“You evil bastard,” Mrs. Ford laughed dryly.
“Oh, I’m the bastard? That’s really funny coming from the woman whose son is one,” Robert replied, folding his arms on his chest as he smirked.
Mrs. Ford could not contain her emotions anymore, she rose from the chair she was sitting in and pushed the entire computer from the desk in a swift motion. The sound echoed in the large office.
“Call my son a bastard one more time and I swear I would ruin this whole f*cking arranged marriage bullcrap!” She dared him. “I would tell the whole world the real reason we’re married and even throw in the fact that you’re abusive!”
Robert started to laugh as he studied the look of rage on his wife’s face. From being with her for so many years, he knew just the right buttons to press to trigger her.
Robert sat back in his chair and breathed out a sigh. He glanced at the broken computer on the marble tiles and then looked back at his wife.
He knew that she was crazy enough to do what she was saying and she had never pulled this card before, so if she was pulling it, then that meant that this was really important to her.
“Fine,” Robert surrendered. “Have the boy meet me before his flight.”
“No, after what you did to him last night, I won’t allow you to be in the same room as him.”
“Well, that’s my condition. Either that or if he tries to leave, I would make sure that I use every ounce of my power to ruin his life,” Robert told his wife.
Mrs. Ford knew that this was the only way. She clenched her jaw and then turned around to walk out of the office.
“Tell him to wear the suit that I bought him last year for his birthday, he has never worn that before,” Robert added as he watched his wife walk out. He knew that she had heard him and he was glad.
But he was now going to use the time alone to really think about what he had just agreed to.
Mrs. Ford used the elevator and it took her from the top floor of the highly impressive building to the lobby. As she walked toward the exit, most of the employees stared at her, amazed to see the wife of Mr. Ford in the flesh.
“Is the car ready?” She asked the guard that always escorted her when she went places.
“Yes, ma’am,” The man wearing dark shades and a suit replied to Mrs. Ford. “I have informed the driver that we are heading back to the hospital. Let me know if I should tell him to reroute.”
Mrs. Ford did not reply, and that was all the guard needed to know that the plans to go back to the hospital had not changed.
When she entered the car, the guard closed the door and she was driven right back to the hospital. This hospital was the same one that her mother died in when she was sick, but instead of sad memories, it brought comforting ones.
Mrs. Ford, Isaac, and her father spent more time with her mother when she was admitted than they ever did before she got sick. So in a way, the sickness brought them closer.
“Ma’am…” The guard called for her attention and she noticed that the door of the car was already opened and she had been lost in her thoughts.
“Thank you, Bill,” She rarely called the guard by his name, but whenever she did, he was very happy about it. She got out of the car and in a few minutes, she was back in her son’s room.
“You’re back,” Isaac said when his mother entered the room. She had a proud look on her face, and that let him know that she came bearing good news.
“Your dad was a d*ck as always but he agreed to let you go to America for college.”
Isaac was shocked that Mr. Robert even agreed. Mr. Robert never failed to remind him every chance that he got that he was the heir and so he needed to work harder than everyone he knew combined together.
When it came to showing Isaac love, Mr. Ford was lacking, but with everything else, he was perfect. He made sure to teach Isaac a business tip every single day even when they had argued, which they did a lot.
The teaching was either in person at the mansion, at the company, or sent via text messages.
“He had one condition though. That you see him before the flight.” Mrs. Ford added.
“Why?” Isaac asked in disgust. After last night, if he was in the same room with that man, he did not know what he would do. He had so much anger in his heart. Mr. Robert not only went too far last night, but he crossed a line.
In fact, maybe he did have to have a talk with Mr. Robert. That way Isaac could let him know that he could do all the yelling he wanted at his mom, but if he found out that he touched her like he did last night, hell would break loose.
Isaac knew that he held back last night, he could have done more but he was just crippled by fear and by the fact that he respected Mr. Robert too much.
“I don’t know why Isaac. I honestly don’t.” Mrs. Ford answered honestly. She was just happy that her husband agreed. She was not surprised when they started yelling at each other at the office, they almost always did.
He was just a bitter and sour man with a quick temper. Mrs. Ford felt like there were issues in his life that he did not work out, and she had tried to get him to talk to her like a normal human being but it was impossible.
She even hired a private therapist one time but it was useless. Robert literally spat in the therapist’s face during their first session and dared the lady to come back if she was brave enough.
Mrs. Ford approached the chair next to her son’s bed and sat down. The guard, Bill, was outside, standing at the door.
The door suddenly opened, grabbing Mrs. Ford and Isaac’s attention. It was the doctor, he was a bit aged than the last time Isaac had seen him. He walked in with a binder in his hand and a comforting smile on his face.
“I have good news!” The doctor’s words made Mrs. Ford’s heart dance with glee. “Isaac is now free to go home.”
Isaac smiled. He remembered this man. He was the same doctor that treated his grandmother when she was sick. “I don’t need some kind of expensive surgery?” Isaac joked, and the doctor laughed, followed by Mrs. Ford.
“No, young man. You have a few tears and busies on your back, the cut to your neck is pretty mild, and you were a bit dehydrated. But we have taken care of all of that. You just need to take it easy,” The doctor flashed his adoring smile at his patient.
Isaac was happy that he could go home and that he was okay, but his flight was tomorrow and his dad had demanded to see him before then. That meant that he and his father would be in the same room tonight.
After being discharged, Isaac sat in the back of the fancy car with his mother as they were driven home. His heart beat hard against his chest and adrenaline was rising in his body as they got closer to the mansion. He kept balling his hand into a fist as a way to soothe the anger he felt.
When they had reached it, they got out and headed into the house. Isaac led the way and his mother followed behind him. She was trying to act calm but she was slightly nervous.
Last night, her husband had come home drunk. What if he did it again tonight when he was supposed to talk with Isaac?
When the two of them reached the living room, they met Mr. Robert sitting on one of the couches, staring at the wall. He then turned his attention to them when he noticed their presence. His facial expression was hard and the smell of liquor swirled lightly in the living room.
Mrs. Ford and Isaac could tell that Mr. Robert had been drinking.
“I’d like to be alone with my son,” Mr. Robert said firmly while looking at Isaac. Mrs. Ford’s heart skipped a beat and she gulped as she reminded herself that this was the only way her son would be free from all this.
She knew that his flight was tomorrow and that after this talk, he would not have to talk to Robert for a very long time again. But she was nervous, not just for Isaac, but for Robert.
When they were in the car, she noticed how Isaac kept balling his hands into fists. He was filled with anger that was pregnant with rage. Isaac was a ticking bomb and if Robert even slightly raised his voice at him, she knew that there would be an explosion.
“Goodbye, Ava,” Mr. Robert said when he realized that his wife was still standing there. He knew that he shouldn’t have drunk before meeting with Isaac tonight but he had no choice, the sadness in his heart was just too loud.
Isaac watched his mother leave him and his father alone in the living room. He walked towards one of the couches and sat down. He could feel his father’s eyes on him as he tried to make himself comfortable on the luxurious couch. “I see they fixed up your neck,” His father began as he stared at Isaac. His eyes were not looking the way they usually looked. Instead of seeing the hardness that he knew so well in them, Isaac saw compassion and guilt. “Don’t start,” He warned his father. “I’m not starting anything,” His father replied to him boldly as he crossed his legs. “I’m just stating what is obvious, and right now, that’s your neck.” Isaac was really being tested. He could feel his patience becoming thinner. If his father continued on this path of arrogance, he would certainly snap. “Why am I here? Why did you want to see me?” His father smiled faintly and ran his hand through his salt-and-pepper hair. “I’m sorry for what happened last night. I was abusive and deserve to go to p
Isaac looked out the plane’s window as it descended slowly over the concrete jungle that is New York City. He was blown away at how many buildings he saw, the place looked surreal! After landing and when the engine noises had subsided, the pilot spoke, “Ladies and Gentlemen, we welcome you to the city of New York. The local time is 7:45 AM. For your safety and the safety of those around you, please remain seated with your seatbelts fastened and keep the aisles clear until we are parked at the gate.” Isaac could not contain his excitement. Even though he was a bit jetlagged from the flight, he was not going to let that dull his experience. When the plane parked at the gate, he unfastened his seatbelt and headed out. The air was cold and his nose hurt slightly every time he inhaled. Why was it so cold? It was not even snowing; just a slight drizzle. “Isaac Ford, yes?” A man that worked with the airport asked Isaac when he was in the huge building. Isaac nodded and the man continued
Isaac watched the look on the chancellor's face. He knew that the man was annoyed but had no choice but to answer any question thrown at him. “Mr. Ford…” Mr. Hart began after he released a sigh. “I don’t appreciate that our relationship is starting on the basis of money.” Isaac could not help but chuckle at the man’s response. Was he being serious? Whether he liked it or not, their relationship had already been cemented by money. By Ford money. “Now, I have arranged a tour of the campus and our facilities for you. I’m sure you would love to see where you would be going to school for the next couple of years.” Mr. Hart smiled warmly as he stared at the boy; he was proving to be trouble already and this was just the first day. “Okay,” Isaac replied as he put the phone back into his pocket. “One of our best students would be the one in charge of the tour,” Mr. Hart continued. “No,” Isaac stood to his feet and stared at the man. If his parents were literally paying almost a millio
The girl watched Isaac get closer to her and he seemed intimidating but yet had a softness that called to her. His eyes were dark and his smile was doing something to her that she could not completely understand at the moment. Who was this man? “Hi,” Isaac ran his hand through his hair as he kept his eyes on the beautiful girl that stood in front of him. He was a very calculated person that did things smoothly but for the first time in years, he did not know what to do. “Hi,” The words came out as a soft whisper. “I’m Jessie Whitfield, and I’m a second-year student here.” Isaac chuckled in response and Jessie raised one of her eyebrows before asking, “Why are you laughing?” Her voice was gentle.“It’s just that you’re acting like you’re being interviewed,” Isaac's body was getting dryer with each minute that passed because of the flow of air in the room, but his hair was still drenched. “I’m just introducing myself, stranger,” Jessie replied as she ran her hands over the spine of
Jessie tried her best to listen to her lecturer but she could not help feeling Isaac’s eyes on her. He kept looking at her and each time she looked back at him, he looked away. This made Jessie giggle. She felt like a teenager, and for a long time in her life, she was not overly obsessed about how she did in school, getting her family out of poverty, or the dark secret she had that gnawed at her every damn day. She felt seen. “Okay, class. That would be all for today. Make sure to read and prepare for your midterms which would be coming up pretty soon.” The lecturer spoke loudly so everyone in the class could hear her. The class was now over and everyone was trying to leave. Isaac stood up and folded his arms on his broad chest as he watched Jessie put her books, markers, and other things into her tote bag. She had a small smile on her face that Isaac liked looking at. He needed to find a way to spend more time with her. “Hey, pretty boy!” One of the students startled Isaac.
Isaac was standing in front of the full-length mirror in the penthouse as he got ready for the party. He was very excited for this would be his very first informal party, plus Jessie would be there. He really wanted to see what she would look like out of a baggy sweater and held-up messy bun. After Jessie had introduced herself to Otis, she decided to head home while Isaac let Otis drive him back to the penthouse. He then asked Otis to help him find something casual to wear at the party. He was so used to the dozens of formal parties that he went to that he was oblivious to how one should dress for a gathering as mundane as a house party. Otis was really good at finding the right outfits and was currently waiting for Isaac downstairs in the car so they could head to the party. “This is so different,” Isaac chuckled to himself as he studied his reflection in the mirror. Isaac knew that his dad would go crazy if he saw him wearing something either than an expensive suit to go to
Isaac could see that Jessie was not okay. They were building such a good momentum together but now he could feel her withdrawing. He knew that he was losing her and if he did not do something, maybe he’d lose her forever.Or maybe he was just being dramatic and really worried about Jessie.“Jessie, let me help you,” Isaac suggested as he took a few steps closer to her. He did not want to try to touch her again, knowing now that she clearly did not want to be touched. “Please.”Jessie’s eyes were filled with tears and when she blinked, they rolled down her face. She clenched the phone in her hand and stared at the message. Why was this happening to her now? If someone knew her secret then that meant her whole life was over! Everything that she had dreamed about and worked for would be for nothing! Jessie was glad that Isaac was here and that she was really having a good time before she received the message. Now she just wanted to be alone. “You can’t help me.” She laughed dryly. Who t
Isaac took a few seconds to process what Otis had just told him. He really wanted to help Jessie and not doing anything especially when he was capable made him feel useless. But he also knew that Otis had a solid point. If he did this, it would be the very thing that would pull him and Jessie apart even before they got together. “You have a point.” Isaac agreed with Otis. “I’d like to think that too.” Otis made a turn down the street and drove towards the skyscraper that Isaac was staying in. “So what would you suggest that I do?” “Have faith. Have faith that when the right time comes, Jessie would open up to you. And not just about her secret but about everything.” Otis replied, and the car came to a stop. Isaac smiled, feeling good that Otis just saved him from almost making a mistake that would have bitten him in the butt. “Thank you, Otis.” He smiled warmly.“You’re welcome,” Otis pressed a button in the car and the locks on the doors made a sound, signaling that the doors we
Isaac watched Otis park the fancy jeep in front of the airport, which was where he was with his luggage. Otis got down from the vehicle and kept the engine running as he took the luggage away from Isaac respectfully. “How was your flight?”“It was meh. I have flown on better airlines,” Isaac joked, and Otis laughed in response. When the luggage was in the trunk and Isaac was in the backseat of the car, he let out a sigh. It felt good to be back in New York. “Did you take care of what you went to take care of the back home?” Otis asked as he drove Isaac to the penthouse. The car was filled with light jazz music. “Uh, yeah. Yeah, I think I can say that.” Isaac did not want to get into the specifics with Otis. Not that he did not trust the man, but he was just a bit weary of the topic and liked that his life here was different. He was afraid that if he told Otis fully about what happened at home, then in a way he would be contaminating his life here with life back home. Isaac did no
The car ride back to the mansion was quiet. No one said a word to each other but it was clear that a lot of thinking was going on. Isaac sat in the back seat by the door while his mom sat between him and his father. Once they reached home, the car swerved smoothly into the big compound and came to a stop in front of the house. Two guards immediately approached the car and they opened it up for the Fords. When Isaac got down, he walked straight into the house and headed for the living room. He started to pace as he awaited his parents. When they finally came into the house, they joined him in the living room and sat down on the couch.“One of you please tell me that we are not going to let that madman get away with what he has planned…” Isaac began. “Isaac,” His mother's voice was filled with defeat, and her eyes held sadness. “I love you. I really do, but I think the best thing to do is to do as Victor has proposed.”Isaac stopped pacing and looked at his mother incredulously. “You
Robert Ford entered the sitting area and saw his brother sitting on the long fur-covered chair. His mother sat not too far, and she frowned a bit when her eyes landed on him.Victor stood to his feet and straightened the suit on him. His hair was perfectly styled, and the shoes he wore alone cost nearly ten thousand dollars. He had been in prison for a long time and being free felt good.He could still remember why he had been thrown in jail. It was because he beat a man to death. Victor did regret that the man died but he knew that he only assaulted him because the man had been caught trying to rape his girlfriend of six years. He had been so angry and filled with rage that all he could see was red. He bashed the man’s head in with a short-length iron pole that he had found in the same alley where everything was happening. There was so much blood but he did not stop hitting the man until he was out of breath.Afterward, he took his girlfriend to her family and turned himself in. He g
Worry filled Isaac’s heart and he aimed to know what was going on. “Mom, what do you mean that we could lose everything? What’s going on?” “I really don't want to talk about this over the phone, Isaac. Just know that we need you home as soon as possible.” Isaac heard his mother breathe out a sigh of frustration. “I always knew that this was coming, but I did not think that it would be this soon.” “Mom, you can’t just tell me all this and leave my mind to wander. Please, I promise that the moment I drop this call I would book the next flight to South Africa. But I need you to tell me what’s going on.” Isaac begged his mother for more information. “Just come home, please…” “Did dad hit you?” Anger laced his voice and he clenched his jaw. “No,” His mother replied in a breathy way. “Then what? What could be huge enough for you to sound this worried?” He held the phone to his ear as he headed for his room. He needed to start parking and would get Otis to take him to the airport as
“Come on dad, leave them alone,” Josh complained to his father. His father was a successful CEO and made sure to insert his title in every conversation. It made Josh feel uncomfortable.“I’m just trying to get to know your friends, Josh. You complained about how I am not in your life enough and when I finally attempt to, you push me away,” His father’s voice was smooth and heavy. “Jessie, this is my father, James Clinton.” Josh gave in and introduced Jessie to his father. Josh’s father smiled politely as he reached out his hand to shake Jessie’s. “Nice to meet you, dear. And might I say, you look lovely.” “Thank you, Mr. Clinton.” “And you, young man. You look familiar. Do I know you from somewhere?” Josh’s father said when he turned his attention to Isaac as he tried to shake the young heir’s hand. “I’m Isaac Ford. Nice to meet you, Mr. Clinton.” Isaac was really good at social interactions like this. His father made sure of it. His father made him understand that he was to be a
Isaac closed the door of the car once he was in. “For now, nowhere. I just want you to drive me around the city until it’s time for us to pick up Jessie.” “Sounds like a plan. You are about to get the most unique tour of New York City, the city that never sleeps.” Otis replied as he chuckled heartily. The car jerked forwards gently as Otis pressed the gas. He took Isaac around the city and even rolled down the windows. The wind blew in the car as he drove and whenever traffic caught them, Isaac would take pictures of the busy streets and the buildings. Finally, the sun was setting and Isaac was blown away by the beauty and life of the city. He had only been here for a few days but he felt like he was becoming a part of this surreal place that looked like it was ripped out of a modern fantasy world. The buildings were so tall that they looked unreal. When the sun had disappeared and welcomed the night, Isaac laid back on the car seat as a feeling of freedom filled him. He felt reall
Isaac stared at Jessie, slightly surprised that she wanted to go to another party. But it made him excited and glad that she also wanted to spend more time with him. “Are you sure?” She giggled and the sound made Isaac smile warmly. He loved seeing her happy. “Yes, I’m sure.” She sat down in her seat next to Isaac. The class was now almost full but the teacher was not there yet so everyone was doing their own thing. “But what about your secret?”Her eyes dimmed a bit but hope then sparked in them. “It’s all good. My brother is taking care of it. There is nothing to worry about.” Her tone was confident. “That’s great! I genuinely hope that it all works out!” Isaac meant the words that flowed out of his mouth. He really did not like seeing Jessie weighed down and downcast. He enjoyed it when she was light and filled with a softness that he could barely describe.“If you need my help at all, just let me know,” Isaac added, and then he bit his bottom lip in nervousness. He remembered
Jessie watched the color drain from her brother’s face and her heart dropped. “Please, say something…” She begged him, feeling fear and paranoia take over her entire being. “I–I…how is this even possible?” He stuttered and then tugged at his hair in frustration. “I swear, I covered our tracks perfectly. There’s just no way.” He laughed without humor. Jessie could not help the tears that were building up in her eyes. She had thought that her brother would be able to take care of this but from his reaction, she feared that it was above him. “I was at Josh’s party–” Jessie began but Joe cut her off. “You were at a party?” He stared at her incredulously. “I literally told you to lay low!” His face glowed red, showing how upset he was. “Can you just let me finish?” “Dammit, Jessie!” Joe roared as he slapped the computer monitor from on his desk violently. It crashed to the floor with a loud thud, causing Jessie to inhale sharply. “I just wanted to feel what it was like…” Jessie sob
