Coming home after a long day at work and finding the place ripped was something that I couldn’t stand. I was a neat freak just like Monica from Friends, perhaps worse than her, so seeing my tiny two-bedroom apartment that easily ended in just a few steps in a mess was something that didn’t sit well with me.

I cleaned the entire house at night before going to bed, yet right now it looked like some sort of natural disaster hit this place and took away everything with her.

"What the hell is this?" I shouted, looking all around from my living room to my dining room.

I ran inside the house, but it was ripped apart. Everything was out of place. The cheap couch that came with the apartment was torn in the middle as if someone had used a knife to slash it in half. The cotton was all over the room, flying, resting on the floor while the small wooden coffee table that I bought from a dollar shop was missing its feet, which I found a few inches away.

The wreck didn’t stop there. My fruit bowl, which had an apple and two bananas, was on the floor with the broken glasses, which used to be my water pitcher and mug, splattering all over the place.

For a minute, I felt like someone had robbed this place. It was impossible when Ashley was here all day. How could anyone come and just take everything from here when Ashley was present?

"Ashley, Ashley. Where the hell are you? And what happened here? Don’t tell me you partied here with your junkie friends at my house. I am going to kick you out of here." I opened the door to her room, thinking nothing really happened.

There she was, my dear older sister on her bed. The only difference was that she was sleeping beside the needles that I knew she used to take her drugs. I was going to walk out of her room, but something caught my eye. Her mouthThere was something in her mouth, like a piece of fabric.

"Ashley, are you okay?" I whispered, moving toward her. "Oh, my god." I ran towards her and took away the soft cotton from her mouth. "What happened?"

She sighed as she felt the water coming out of her eyes like a river. That was my first clue that something bad had happened here.

"What happened? Tell me what happened here, Ashley?" I shouted at her.

"He took everything with him." Her breathing was rough; she needed a few minutes to calm herself down before she spoke. I knew all of this, but I felt a rush in my heart.

Hearing her words, all of a sudden, adrenaline hit me, and oh boy, it crashed into me hard and badly. I could hear my heartbeat. The sound was loud enough to give me a headache. The plume of blood felt like it was going way faster than it should.

"What do you mean by that?" I asked, moving backward from her toward the door of this room.

"He drugged me and took everything. Everything Lau. He robbed us."

I ran to the kitchen. I didn’t care if everything I owned was gone or if someone took it with them, but the money that I had in the kitchen cabinet beside the pasta inside the flour container was significant. All I could think about was the $100,000 I’d kept there two days ago after withdrawing from the bank and the $5,000 I’d borrowed from Joe, one of the guys who worked with me at the company.

That money couldn’t go anywhere, even if the entire world was getting mugged.

The entire kitchen was in a good state. Better than the living and dining room, however, the lid of the container was open. Not all, but most of them. And among most of them, it was the one where I put 100K together. I found the other 5K, which I pasted under the kitchen counter.

It was done. I was done. The money that I saved up so hard was gone. I lost every little penny that I earned by running around with arrogant, rich white people, fulfilling their absurd wishes. Most importantly, I occasionally allowed some of them to insult me. Just so I could pay an absurd sum for this hell, food, and my mother.

I sat on the floor, gripping that 5K in my hand.

"What am I going to do now?" I asked myself but failed to answer the question.

I wanted to think of a way that could help me to get out of this nightmarish situation, but sadly, I didn’t find any. This morning, I found ways for Mr. Astor to dodge the bullet of leaving the office without any notice. My brain worked faster than a bullet when I was making those calls to his clients.

Then why couldn’t I think of a route for myself?

There had to be something. There had to be a way, a lane, something that would help me buzz off this nightmare. I needed to get the money back. I was desperate.

"He took everything with him. When I opened my eyes a little because of the sound that was coming to my ears, I saw him counting the money. That was a lot of money. He left with the money."

"Who is he?" I asked coldly.

"Jonathan. My boyfriend. He was here last night when you banged on my door last night. Remember?"

"I didn’t see anyone. How long did you know this Jonathan guy?" I had zero ideas why I was asking all these questions to her. There was nothing I could do even after knowing all this stuff about a guy whom I had never met, even when he was under my roof with me a few hours ago.

"Two days," she whispered.

"And you fucking brought a man into my house who you knew for two fucking days?" I stood and walked toward her.

"It was a mistake," Ashley said, moving away from me. The fear in her eyes was clear, but I didn’t care about what the heck she was going through at this moment. All I could think about was the money that I had saved by working hard day and night along with the stuff that I needed to do with those paper bills.

"Mistake? Do you have any knowledge of how much he took with him?"

"No," she whispered and shook her head.

"100k."

"Oh my God," she said, covering her mouth with her hand.

"Your fucking two-day robber boyfriend took the money that I needed to give to the hospital so they wouldn’t kick her out of the bed she is staying in." So she can have her meds and the treatment that can bring her back to life, to me, to us." I broke down and fell to the ground. "He fucking took away my mother from me."

"I am sorry," Ashley said, but I didn’t hear that.

I knew my brain captured something like "sorry," but my heart wasn’t ready to acknowledge how sorry she was. That didn’t matter in the end. That wasn’t going to bring back the money that I needed to pay for the hospital tomorrow.

I had no idea how I came to work. I felt like I was in a hallucination. Perhaps someone else was controlling me through some remote or the newly invented tech stuff. I didn’t know. Everything that was happening to me felt like a series of dreams to me, as if I was sleeping and then I was going to wake up and everything would disappear.

Only that it was the reality and it fucked me.

"Mrs. Kennedy, are you okay?" a male voice asked me.

"Yes," I replied as I noticed Mr. Astor standing between his and my office doorways."Is there something you need, Mr. Astor?"

"I have been calling for a long time, but you aren’t answering your phone."

"Oh." I rubbed my temples.

"Can you come to my office? There is something I want to talk to you about."

"Sure."

After Mr. Astor went to his office, I rubbed my face with my hand. That was when I understood the tone of the conversation I had with my arrogant boss just now. Something that has never happened before.

He was sweet, gentle, and patient with me, which could not have been possible if we were in a different world. But here it was impossible.

The last time I didn’t answer his phone because I was in the washroom was a month ago. He didn’t come out of his room and talked with me that time as a substitute. He sent me a letter from HR letting me know I would be fired the next time I didn’t pick up his call on the first ring.

Both of them were the same man and still had two different behaviors on the same occasion. It was clear that this man was indeed sick.

I entered his room with my notepad, pen, and iPad as always.

"Yes, Mr. Astor. Do I need to fix your meeting with Mr. Ashborn today?" I checked his meeting schedule on the iPad. "You have an empty spot around 4 p.m. I can fit the meeting at that time if you want."

"Please take a seat, Lauren. And please call me Gavin." He said with a smile.

The way he said those words with that smirk sent electricity to my bones. If I wasn’t numb today, I would have jumped out of this chair and run out of this building in fear of what I was hearing.

I noticed the change in this man since yesterday. I assumed he was under the weather or drunk, but right now seeing him saying this stuff, I couldn’t get that. Simply, I was finding it hard to understand what was really happening.

"Sure," I replied.

"There is something that I need you to do for me,"

"Sure,"

"I want us to get married. Within a month, preferably," He said as if it was nothing.

Now, I was hearing stuff. Gosh, I was close to losing my mind. That was why human beings needed to have proper sleep or rest before starting their day. Otherwise, this was what happened. You apparently heard your boss was proposing to you.

The devil who never looked at you properly didn’t have a word of conversation outside of work; scolded you for every little fault you had, and would be the last person in this world to say those romantic words to you.

"Sorry, I didn’t catch your words, Mr. Astor," I pulled out my notepad and pen, ready to write down whatever was about to come out of his mouth. He smiled, seeing me ready to note it for some reason.

"Lauren Kennedy, I, Gavin Astor, would like to take you as my wife. Give me the honor of being my wife."

And that was the last hit for me.

If you asked me 48 hours ago what I was passionate about at the time, I would have said my answer would be simple. Marriage.I was excited about getting married, so much so that I bought a ring, a rose gold princess cut diamond ring, just the way she wanted. Now, who was this woman? One thing, it wasn’t my secretary in the first place. It was my childhood sweetheart and now the world-renowned model Celine. We knew one another from the moment we came into this world. We were neighbors and family friends, which made us friends, and then something more. She was always there for me, witnessed all my successes and achievements, clapped and cheered for me loudly from the crowd, and kissed me every time I came back home with trophies or medals. She was then, even after she got the tag of supermodel, not most of the time, but at least she tried to be with me, but then one day she was nowhere to be found. The little girl with blond hair who promised to marry me when she was seven didn’t want t

The world seemed to be playing some cruel game with me. The turn of the events that happened in the past 24 hours made me speechless in a distinctive way. When I kept thinking I had hit the lowest point of my life, fate came back to mock me and slapped me harder than before with the freshly baked nuisance, as if I was born to taste this dish.Everything was hazy. All I could see was a bunch of red lights in the darkness ahead of my eyes, even though it was a lovely sunny morning. Money was gone.Where? no fucking idea. There wasn’t anything I could do in that matter either until my boss plated this ultimate mouth-watering platter ahead of me that I was greedy to take. Mr. Astor would pay every penny. The amount was so huge that at one point; I thought there was no way I could ever manage to provide the treatment for my poor mother. I still worked in the hope that there would be a way or a hope that would help me.There was no hope for me when it came to arranging the amount that count

This morning was unusual if you saw the other mornings these past weeks. The summer was on its way out; the warmth, dryness, and heatwave were less than a week, but the rain outside this building was meticulously cleaning up the state as if it had been muddy for a long time. The rain was unexpected if you thought of the atmosphere of the state, but for me, it felt right. The anxiousness that breathed in my heart after seeing the text that Lauren sent me last night, I somehow lost the touch with wisdom. Her answer was short and clear, as if she knew what she was going to sign on to. She sounded confident in those few words of the message, which was unlike her.My past three years of professional experience with her made me believe one thing about her, which was her lack of confidence.Even when she did the job properly, she was always doubtful about her ability. Sometimes, if I asked her about something, she would alter her answer to give me the right answer. It was one of her traits th

He didn’t answer any of my questions, rather, he preferred to sit there holding the glass of iced tea. It wasn’t that I asked something related to rocket science that he was thinking about before answering; it was a simple question. Why did you want to marry me?A man like Gavin Astor was born into royalty. The Astors were the royal family of California. They ruled almost half of the state, owed most of the buildings, and banked their accounts in millions every single day. The influence that they had all over California, one of the most expensive states in this country, articulated the dominance that they possessed. It was all due to the money that had been passed from one generation to another. The Astors weren’t new to the game of wealth, as were most of the other families. It was Gavin Astor’s great grandfather who launched this real estate business in the late 70s with the help of his father-in-law. At first, the business wasn’t that stable as people were more interested in food,

Judgmental eyes hardly bother me at this age. From a very young age, I was the focus of people’s attention for one or two reasons. I would have gotten annoyed by all these eyes looking at me, whispering and pointing at me, but in my teenage years, I made my peace with this too.The first staring and whispering occurred after it was on every news channel and headline that my father was having an affair with a B-class actress. Some photos of my father and that actress being intimate were spilled on the media, which were on display everywhere and in the mouths of all the people around me.It was the first time anyone in school paid me attention. So many people came to have a conversation with me during lunchtime, so much so that I was on the edge of snapping at someone. Thankfully, I controlled it. More like Dean came to my rescue. The boy, who was known as a bully in the school, stood beside my lunch table when three girls were trying to talk with me. God knew what?“Do you girls have d

The day I converted from Ms. to Mrs. was this morning. I put the last touches on the task in the same custom as Mr. Astor instructed me. I signed those papers without giving them a read, which I knew was worse than walking to this marriage, but there wasn’t much time left for me to read those documents. I had already gotten five calls from the clinic telling me I needed to pay the bill before 12 or they were going to send her somewhere else.God knew what those papers were about, but seeing the front, I was sure something related it to legal stuff. I had been working with Mr. Astor for three years now, which means I had acquainted myself with his life quite well by now. I had knowledge of every single person who was working with him directly or indirectly. Seeing his lawyer, who handed me the papers and directed me to sign in the blank spots beside Mr. Astor’s signature, it was pretty clear those papers were important.Who knew better than me? It was easy. Just two words, “I do,” and I was a married man.Upon waking up this morning, I experienced an enormous amount of anxiety and a loss of confidence about this marriage. You could giggle and say the groom got cold feet as if it was nothing. Most of the people on this planet would say it was normal. You are stepping into a new life with the person you love. It was a huge commitment since you are committing your entire life to that one significant person. It was a big deal. Walking through the route of nervousness was really alright, more normal than anything.Only if it was that easy in my case. In the past two days, I checked everything that could be related to Lauren just to get to know her a little better and stay under the same roof with her. It wasn’t a simple job, though. Five Years LaterLaurenIt was Joy’s seventh birthday. The party that Gavin threw for his dear daughter was supposed to be a kid’s birthday party, but after cutting the cake, this blast turned out to be a boardroom meeting. Gavin was sitting with his friends, clients, investors, and business partners whose children were the same age as my daughter or a little older than her. The chocolate cake was lying on the coffee table ahead of these adult men, but they were more interested in talking about the stock market than the party that was going on.I was sitting with a bunch of the mothers from Joy’s school. It was regular mom-concerned talk, which I was getting used to, but surely needed enough time to get into the gossip that they were passing. Every time I sat with them, the only thing I heard them talking about was a teacher who got pregnant before marriage or a parent who was fighting behind closed doors. I was sitting in my office when Lily informed me that the guest of the day was already waiting for me in our waiting room. On the bright side, Knox accepted my invitation, which I sent to him through a text that Dean and I created last night by wasting thirty minutes of our precious time.“It has to be a minimal text with some unadorned words,” I told Dean when we sat down in my penthouse living room, squeezing the burner phone in our hands.Everything we wrote felt fake until the last text we typed, which somehow sounded formal enough to send to Knox.“Astor Empire’s CEO would like to have a cup of coffee with you tomorrow at his office. Please be in the Astor building at sharp 4.”It was such lame and childish stuff to forward to someone whom you would like to meet. The moment Dean typed this nonsense, the one word that came out of our mouths was the same word Archimedes said upon a significant discovery in the Physis world.“Eureka,” we both said at the same time, reading what was

“Alright. I understand everything you are saying. But why would Knox go after you? There is no logic behind that. I assumed he felt betrayed when he realized you moved ahead in life while he was serving his sentence for a murder he committed earlier in his life. That wasn’t in your hand. I mean, it was his crime, and the law gave him a suitable punishment, I believe. At present, he is dating your older sister, or more like he is using her to get revenge on you.” I sighed. “My question here is, what revenge? You didn’t do anything wrong with him, right? Then why was he after your life like a mad dog?” I sat on the near couch while Lauren was still standing in the bathroom doorway with her hands together, just like a criminal.“I did play the foul game that night,” she whispered.“How?” I asked. “I don’t see any foul play in your tale.”“Do you know why Knox went to prison?”“Yes, for a murder that he committed.”“Whose murder? After breaking up with Knox, I took another job just so I could come home when every one of the members of this house was deep in sleep. Hearing those arguments every single day was so annoying that sometimes I wandered around the town, just to escape from the ear-piercing competition that my parents loved to do at night. My time at Knox was my pathway to abscond from the toxic atmosphere of my home. If I ever sat down and thought about Knox, including the feelings I had for him, I was pretty sure I had nothing for that guy in my heart. You could say, I toyed with him, using him to get away from home for some time. I was in the bathroom treating the wound that Knox and my sister caused me yesterday. Everything else was in my body, which I could easily bury with my clothes, but the one punch that Ashlee gifted me right in my face was giving me hell. In which world would there be such a weird coincidence where your older sister was dating your ex-convicted boyfriend without knowing about each other? I doubt this was a plan that they both plotted together to take revenge on me. They both undoubtedly harbored a bitter grudge against me.I was in the corner of the convenience store when Knox grabbed me by the cap of my hoodie and threw me into the dark alley.
