Chapter 72: A monster like that

** Levi’s POV

“An offense like that, against our own kind, is punishable by death,” I tell him, careful to keep my tone neutral, “That’s a very serious accusation, Al.”

I never thought about that, which disturbs me greatly. That a fellow shifter could potentially be involved in these threats. I suppose I didn’t want to. Abhorrent though this idea might be, it bears serious consideration.

“I told you, you wouldn’t like it,” Al says sadly, “ Trust me when I tell you, I don’t want to believe it either, but it’s happened before. And I think it’s important that you don’t overlook it as a possibility now. Shifters are dying. We are being hunted. If there is a shifter who is helping these hunters kill us, then we need to take that possibility seriously.”

“For the record, I don’t know anyone who I believe would be capable of such things,” Al clarifies, “I don’t want to believe that a monster like that could dwell among us. I’m not a

Chapter 73: All I need ** Amber’s POV “I love you Levi,” I tell my husband, “More than you will ever know.” We both lie naked, snuggled under the covers in bed. I trace the line of his tattoos on his arm, reach up and give him a kiss on his cheek. I can feel him smile against my lips. “And I you, my beloved,” he answers, pulling me closer, “You make me so very happy.” I prop on one arm and regard my perfect love. Admire the perfect sculpture of his body. He is everything to me. “Shall I make you happy again?” I ask him, “I have many ideas about how I might do so…” I’m kidding, but I”m also finding that I would be more than ready to worship him again immediately. What he does to me!“I would love it,” my mate tells me, and I can see him considering my offer, “Truly. But alas, we need to get going for now. We need to find a safer place for our family.” I’m not going to fight him on this. I feel terrible that I gave him such a hard time

Chapter 74: Secret societies **Sophie’s POV “I get that security needs to be tight for you guys right now,” Stan says to no one in particular, as he can’t see anyone, “But is the blindfold actually necessary?” Poor man. I really hope that when August asked Stan to come help us find out about the Bane of Wolves that he warned him about the blindfolded drive. He and Levi decided that if he was to come to our home, we needed additional security measures. It’s not because we don’t trust him. It’s better for Stan if he doesn’t know where we are, in case he is questioned. “You can remove the blindfold now, Stan,” my husband tells him, with sympathy,“We’re here. And I am sorry about that.” Stan removes it and looks around. He shrugs. He doesn’t seem especially rattled by the circumstances he has found himself in. In fact, he actually seems to be enjoying himself. “No worries,” he tells my husband with a grin,“I get it. You need to stay safe. And this is th

Chapter 75: On the same side **Levi’s POV “Wow, this is amazing,” Stan says contentedly, “Thank you so much for inviting me to dinner!” Stan is so happy it’s heartwarming. And my mom seems to be having a great time talking to him about the Knights Templar and his idea of where the Holy Grail might be. “We’re happy to have you,” I tell him truthfully, “And besides, finding someone who can speculate with my mother about what really happened that Friday the 13th with the Knights Templar is terrific for all of us. I mean, I know a little about it, but my knowledge is nowhere near as- exhaustive as yours, that’s for sure!” “He knows EVERYTHING,” my mother exclaims happily, “Where have you been hiding this delightful man?” I’m thinking that he’s probably just been hanging out in a library somewhere. However, I like Stan, and I don’t want to take a chance on hurting his feelings. “Amber and I only just met Stan recently, but we’re very glad we did

Chapter 76: Hot- headed **Amber’s POV “Now what’s going on? Is that knocking,” I ask my husband, “At four in the morning? Seriously? Who comes to the door at this hour? How many people know that we live here now?” I groan and pull a pillow over my head. Unbelievable. This place is supposed to be secret! How secret can it be if people are pounding on my door constantly? “My love, it’s your brother,” my husband says in exasperation, without even opening his eyes, “I can hear him muttering to himself.” “Amber! Levi,” Ivan yells, “ We need to talk!” Yes, it’s him all right. He resumes knocking. I sigh. “Go back to sleep Levi,” I tell my mate, resigned to the situation, I”ll talk to him. You handled more than enough of this last night.” “Apparently I didn’t, or he wouldn’t be here right now,” my husband says, getting up despite both his frustration and what I’ve told him, “By the Goddess this had better be good.” I run down the stairs an

Chapter 77: A bad feeling**Amber’s POV “Do you think he can control his temper long enough to do this,” Levi asks me about Ivan, with concern in his voice, “I know that he wants to help, but do you think he’s capable of it?” I can see why my mate is worried. Ivan has always been a little high strung. And they almost came to blows the other night. However, I have faith in my brother. He has never let me down when I needed him most. “I do, my love,” I tell my mate, “In fact, I know he can. He might have a bit of a temper-” “Might have a temper,” Levi says, “Really, my love?” My husband raises his eyebrows for emphasis, and I can’t help but laugh. “Ok, yes, he has a temper,” I tell him, conceding his point, “Ivan will be the very first one to admit that. However, he knows the seriousness of what we are trying to do. He won’t let us down. I know he won’t. Besides, if I didn’t think he could do it I would have forbidden him from participating.”

Chapter 78: Going wolf hunting **Levi’s POV “I don’t know who this guy was, but I can tell you one thing,” I tell my mate, “He won’t be going wolf hunting ever again.” As I stare at his corpse, it angers me that this evil man took his own life before I could question him. He was a human man, not a shifter. He bears the symbol of that evil organization on his wrist. Proof that Sebastian is connected to these hunters somehow. I shake my head and refocus my attention. My wife is the most important thing in my world, and her brother was just nearly killed. “How’s Ivan feeling,” I say, concerned for her brother, ”Is he ok? That was a pretty close call.” “Yes, thank you my love,” she answers, with relief, “He’s feeling better now. He thinks that he cracked a rib, but he’ll be fine. He’s having a stiff drink and relaxing with Hellhound.” He deserves to relax after what he’s been through. It’s not every day you get shot with a silver bullet while trying to a

Chapter 79: Nothing but vengeance **Sebastian’s POV “Sebastian, you have failed us,” the boss informs me, with an air of disappointment,”You told us that this plan was foolproof. Now our man is dead, and you’ve ruined our opportunity to kill the brother. They will be on their guard now.” This is the phone call that I’ve been dreading. I didn’t anticipate Ivan getting away. I thought I had him. I knew that idiot would show up for his beloved sister. My guy had silver bullets and the element of surprise. And Ivan’s temper always gets the better of him. I assumed he would get so angry that he wouldn’t be able to think clearly. How the hell did this happen? I need to fix this or I’m never going to get what I deserve! “I’m sorry, boss. It was a miscalculation,” I tell him, and I am, “I won’t make the same mistake again.” “You better not, if you want to live, wolf,” the boss warns me, anger radiating through the phone, “That went so badly that I’m starting to w

And tell no one about what you just showed me until I say so.” “Roger that, Levi,” Andrew responds, “I’ve got your back.” I can’t even tell the rest of my team what I’ve learned until I talk to the person whose name is on that piece of paper. Andrew showed me deed to the hunters’ property. It was well- hidden in a file cabinet. It’s pretty impressive that Andrew managed to find it. I sprint to my car and drive directly to August’s house. I am so angry that I’m still shaking with rage when I pull up. “AUGUST,” yell at the door letting my fury rage unchecked, “GET OUT HERE NOW!”I pound on the door, screaming at the top of my lungs. I realize, dimly, that I now sound like a lunatic. But I don’t care. His name. His name was on the deed. August owns the buil

I was definitely not expecting that. “If you let me out, then I will kill him,” he says, eerily blankly, “If I escape, I will kill him. I can’t help it. So you will need to kill me to ensure his safety.” “I don’t, I mean, I can’t do that,” Hope tells this strange creature in revulsion at the idea, “I will turn you over to the authorities. That is the only thing I can do. The only thing I will do.” “Very well,” it says, “They will probably kill me then. It is for the best.” Then the man begins his terrible shift back to the beast it was when he was captured. In a matter of moments, the man inside him is gone forever. I shiver at the thought of it. And at the howls that start up again the moment the shift is complete. “Dan is safe,” Hope tells me, her voice unsteady, “It worked. Thank the Goddess.” “You did excellent work,” I tell her, “You were the only one who could

Chapter 99: A different type of beast ***Levi’s POV “Dan, we’re going to play this safe,” Hope tells him seriously, “Amber and the twins definitely healed you. There’s no question of that. But just to be extra careful, the doctor and I want you to follow up with the medicine that you would have been prescribed if you hadn’t been healed. Antibiotics and doses of anti-venom. Every twelve hours for the next week.” I’m still shocked by this turn of events, but Dan seems to be handling all of this incredibly well. Ah, to be young again. “No problem,” he says with a smile, “I’ve got my life back! I’ll take whatever you think is best.” “And even though I know you feel great,” Hope continues with a smile, “Just do me a favor and humor me on this. Get some rest for the next week. You don’t actually have to remain in bed, that would be silly given how well you’ve already healed. You can still see friends, and I know that you’re going to meet with the school lat

Chapter 98: Grievously injured ***Amber’s POV “We’re on our way,” I tell him, “Where are you now?” “I brought him to Hope’s place,” August says sadly, “You need to hurry.” I look to my husband, who is sleeping so peacefully that it saddens me to wake him up. But Dan has been hurt, and if August has brought him to Hope’s place, he must be grievously injured. There is no time to waste. “My love,” I tell him softly, ‘I’m so sorry, but you need to wake up.” My husband stirs, and he looks so perfect lying there in bed that I want to make love all over again. But we need to go. “What is it, my love,” he asks, raising an eyebrow, “Are you ready to try the handcuffs on you this time?” “I am,” I tell him, “But unfortunately, that’s not why I woke you up. There’s been an accident. It’s Dan, and he needs our help.’ “What,” he asks, instantly alert, “What’s happened? Is he ok?” “August said he’s alive, but it’s bad,” I tell him sadly,

Chapter 97: Too powerful to be denied ** Amber’s POV “The first thing we need to do is figure out where you’re going to live,” I tell Dan, “Where have you been staying so far?” “I’m embarrassed about it, but lately I’ve been staying at that motel on Route 9,” he tells me, blushing, “The Black Swan. It’s terrible, and I absolutely hate it. But with my current financial situation, it’s the best that I can afford. Believe me, I’ve looked around.” I am horrified at the thought of a sixteen year old boy staying at that place. It is not a good place for anyone to stay. But anyone under eighteen staying there turns my stomach. Especially Dan, who is innocent despite what he has been forced to live through. Unacceptable. “Then tonight you’re staying with us,” I tell him firmly, “August, you take him out there to that terrible place to get his stuff, and bring him back as fast as you can.” “Are you sure,” Dan asks me, tentatively, “I mean, it’s so kind of

Chapter 96: Creative writing assignment ***Lev’s POV “Dan, you could have come to me,” I tell him sadly, “You could have come to me and told me what happened. I would have protected you. I would have found a place for you. Why did you think that you had to do all of that?” I remember how I felt when my father died. How terrified I was. How my grandmother preyed on that fear within me. Now as I try to envision what it would have been like if everyone I knew and loved was gone, I can’t help shivering. “With all due respect sir, I didn’t know you,” he tells me, and I can see the tears in his eyes that he wipes away quickly, “I didn’t know what to do. I was out of money, and out of options. My entire family, everyone I ever knew, was dead. I wanted to stay alive, and I did the only thing I could think of.” “And what did you think of,” I ask him, concerned for his response “How did you stay alive?” “Well, the thing is, I’m only sixteen,” he replies sa

Chapter 95: A little kinder *** Amber’s POV “Don’t look so surprised guys,” I tell everyone, “Look at it from my perspective. I’m sick of being in fear. Sebastian gave me nightmares, and it turns out that he was hearing voices in his head. Granted, that makes him scary for a completely different reason, but he didn’t know anything. He was useless. I don’t know what this guy’s deal is, but I’m going to see what I can find out about this nonsense, because I’ve had it.” My husband looks at me as if I’ve lost my mind. I know he only wants to protect me, but maybe it’s time that I started protecting myself. “My love,” he says to me, “I just don’t want you to have to deal with this. This is awful business. I’m supposed to protect you, and it feels strange to me to allow you to confront this man. We don’t know what we’re dealing with yet. I consider what my husband has said to me, and while I don’t agree with him, I appreciate his desire to keep me safe. I dec

Chapter 94: Best man for the job *** Levi’s POV “But I tried, I tried,” Sebastian is screaming, “I tried to deliver her to you! They got me first! I thought you would understand!” Elliot and I burst into the room together to see what’s going on. And we find no one. No one but Sebastian, screaming at someone who doesn’t appear to be there. “I did what you told me to do,” he continues, sobbing, and staring at something that neither Elliot nor I can see, “I have been your humble servant. Surely that counts for something!” “Sebastian,” I say, carefully, “Who are you talking to? What’s going on?” “Oh, don’t play with me Levi,” he says, crying uncontrollably, “Don’t pretend you don’t know. Say hello to Dr. Sherman. It’s over now. It’s OVER!” Elliot and I look at each other, and come to the same horrible realization: there is no boss. No Dr. Sherman. Sebastian has been taking orders from no one. All of this time, we thought he was the shifter wo

Chapter 93: Strike a deal ***Elliot’s POV “You know,” I tell Sebastian, leaning closer to really sell what I’m saying to him, “You don’t need to worry about Levi. Not really. He doesn’t have the stomach for what we know needs to be done. You and I, we’re different, you know?” It sickens me to say these things, but I need to find out who’s really behind the scenes here. And Levi can’t play this particular card. Sebastian knows where his interests lie. He may be crazy, but he’s not stupid. Not at all. So I’ll play the rogue shifter trying to get his payday if it means that Amber and the twins remain safe. Although I’m going to need to shower after this. Probably several times. Sebastian sickens me. I just hope I can hide my feelings long enough to figure out who he’s reporting to. “Yes, we are,” Sebastian says, and I can’t believe that he’s buying it, “But I think that the boss would prefer to reveal himself in person. You won’t have to wait long. He’s coming,

We’ve finally got that bastard!” “Are you serious,” I ask him, whispering so as not to wake my wife, “Where is he? How did you find him?” I’m impressed. I knew we would get him eventually, but I had never even hoped that it would be this fast. It’s four o’clock in the morning, but only twenty four hours after I asked for help in his capture. Not bad at all. “He was wandering the streets,” he tells me, “My team found him in the park, muttering to himself. It was bizarre, actually. I thought he would be more stealthy than that.” “Yeah, so did I,” I tell him, thinking, “Where do you have him?” “We brought him directly to the place you said,” he responds, “That really was the best move.” The place he refers to is a facility I had my men create specifically to hold Sebastian. It is modeled on the facility he will ultimately reside
