BaTloung Kingdom

Prince Thabiso

So am told that am getting married in two years, apparently they are waiting for the princess to finish high school and also reach maturity. Am saying they say because I wasn’t involved in the decision making, not that I care anyway because I have a girlfriend but I can only take her as my second wife and that will only happen after three years of marriage with the princess.

I know its unfair on my high school sweetheart Boitumelo but that is how things are done, I cant take a commoner as a first wife for her children cant sit on the throne and the throne of BaTloung can only be passed on to one of pure blue blood not a half blood. Which is what my children with Boitumelo will be labelled as.

Boitumelo and I have been together for six years now yet today am going to tell her that am marrying another woman, a princess of BaKoena kingdom. Father and the chief priest say she is special and they told me about what took place at her welcoming ceremony. Things about rain and stuff which I don’t believe but father says she’s the third rain queen to be chosen.

She can go and make it rain elsewhere because I have someone I want to spent the rest of my life with. However I don’t have a choice in the matter, I have to marry her whether I like it or not. Am driving slow on purpose but the road to Boitumelo’s place seems shorter today, or is It me who’s nervous?

I know this will break her heart but I hope she understands, I can’t lose her, I love her. I parked on the driveway and make my way to the front door. She opened with a smile on her face which I can’t help but return. Oh how I hope she smiles like that when I leave this place.

“My love” she greets excitedly “Hey babe” I kissed her forehead. “Come on in” she made way for me to go inside. “Anything to drink” I shook my head “Just water.” She goes to the kitchen and I made myself comfortable in the living room. “Here you go” she gives me the bottle of water and I took it and placed it on the coffee table.

“How are you doing? I have missed you.” She pouts, she doesn’t know how cute she looks right at this moment. “Am well.” She looks at me and becomes serious as well. “Thabiso am already nervous about what you are going to tell me, please don’t make it worse by giving me short answers.” I looked at her for a while, the gods know I love this woman.

“Babe, you know I love you right? And that I will never do anything to hurt you intentionally.” Now am the one who’s nervous. “Yes I know that but now you are scaring me.” She looks worried. “Babe I come with bad news.” She sighs “I gathered as much, now tell me what is it.?” Here goes nothing.

“My father has arranged marriage for me with some princess but the good news is that am only getting married in the next two years.” I rumbled “You are getting married Thabiso to someone else and not me. There is no good news in this! You are still getting married to someone else and not me. Whether its in 2 years or 10 you still going to marry someone that is not me.!” Okay she is angry.

“Babe please understand that I have no choice in this and you knew that this will happen sooner or later. I am of royalty after all, one of blue blood.” Okay I didn’t mean to say that but I can’t take it back now its out there. “So because I don’t have blue blood that gives you the right to hurt me?” she’s really angry right now and I don’t know what to say to her.

“Boitumelo am not leaving you, we will still be together and I can take you as my second wife.” I hope this calms her down a bit. “Okay I will be your second wife and I want us to get married six months after your wedding to the princess.” Am doomed “No babe that wont work, am only allowed to marry you after 3 years of being married to the princess.” I try to reason with her.

“Wow Thabiso just wow! So what will I be doing while you play happy family with your princess?” she can’t be serious, I don’t even know this princess! “We wont be playing happy family babe, I will still be with you and I promise I won’t touch her. I will still be yours until we make it official.” She needs to understand that I love her.

“How does she look? Please don’t fall for her.” Now my big baby is back, she’s scared I understand. “I don’t know what she looks like I have never met her and I promise I wont fall for her. You have my heart, I love you Boitumelo.” She smiles “I love you too and I don’t want to lose you.” She will never lose me.

“You won’t lose me my love” I assure her “Okay, when are you meeting her?” why does she care about that woman. “I don’t know and I don’t want to. Babe I have to get doing father summoned me back at the palace and you know I don’t like driving at night.” I tell her and she got up to walked me out. “let me walk you out.” She walks me to my car and we said our goodbyes and I left.

The drive to the palace is only an hour from the capital and am glad my baby understands this whole thing. After driving for an hour I arrived at the palace, the guards opened for me and I drove in. Am welcomed by the queen and we share a hug. “The prince of BaTloung, welcome home my prince.” She greets me with a warm smile.

“Greetings mother, my thanks and how is the queen doing?” she walks ahead as we get into the palace. “I am well my prince and how is the prince doing?” she asks “I am very well mother, where is the king?” usually he welcomes me but I don’t see him now. “His in his study waiting for you” I wonder what he wants to talk about.

“Let me go and meet him then mother and I will see you for the night feast.” I kissed her check. “Very well then I will go and ask the maidens to prepare your chamber.” She left and I went to find the king. We shared pleasantries and I took my seat. “Father you summoned me.” I say wanting to get this done so that I can go and rest.

“Yes my prince. I heard that the princess is back for holidays and I think its time you two met.” I should have known. “What is the rush father? I mean we have plenty of time before we wed.” seriously! I do not want to meet her. “I know my prince but you can use this time to get to know each other, so that you are not complete strangers when you get married.” He has a point.

“I hear you father but is it okay if we don’t make it formal? I don’t want to make her uncomfortable.” I lied, I just don’t want to be seen out and about with her. “That is fine my prince you can meet her at the initiation celebrations next week.” That’s perfect! It will like we met by chance.

“That is what I had in mind, father may I see a picture of her, I just want to see what she looks like.” I might at well, she is going to be my wife soon. “Of course, come let us go ask the queen for it, oh she is of true beauty! and gifted!” I didn’t answer that because I don’t know how to. We walked out and met the queen in the lounge. Father asked about the picture and she showed it to me from her phone.

She is of true beauty indeed but one can never know with these princesses, they are spoilt and never want to work for anything.

On the other side Boitumelo was deep in thought. ‘Thabiso thinks I will just sit back and watch some princess take him away from me? He must thing again, I invested years into this relationship and am not about to let some princess side line me! Never I say, Thabiso is a good man, loving and caring. His one of the few good ones who know how to take care of a woman and am not about to lose that.

He talks about marrying me after 3 years, he must be joking! He will marry the princess after 3 years not me. Mother will have to help me with this.’

At the usual meeting place the mystery man and the elders were holding one of their meetings. “I have good news” said the man “What good news could those be when things are not going well for us.?” Asked elder Simon. “Shut your mouth and listen.” Says the man rudely. “Say your peace we don’t have the whole day.” Said elder Lance.

“On one of my meetings with my acquaintances, I met the king of Romo..” the elders were shocked. “Don’t talk to me about that greedy king when we have pressing matters to discuss.” Said elder Simon annoyed. “Would you just shut up and let me finish?” the elders kept their mouths shut. “Now as I was saying, he was angry talking about how your prince Tokelo betrayed him and how my brother married his princess to someone else and not his son. So I spoke to him and told him about my plan and he told me his and decided to join forces.”

The man had a big smile on his face with a picture in mind already of their plan succeeding. “What is his plan?” asked elder Lance. “To kidnap the princess and let his son to deflower her then send a dowry to my dear brother.” Elder Simon laughed out loud “Lerumo will die but I like the plan” he said still laughing. “There will be no more princess in our way.” Said elder Lance. “That’s what am talking about! No one can stop us now.” Said the man pleased with himself.

In the palace the people were still shocked by what the queen mother said, the queen of the land could not stop crying, because traditionally a new born baby or a still born is buried by the elder women of the family only, the mother is not involved, this was so that they don’t put too much stress on her while she just given birth. That is why elder women of the family buried the child and the queen mother knew this very well.Back in the day African women did not go to hospitals to give birth, yes hospitals were there but the elder did not believe in them, they believed that women were made to give birth and could do it without the help of other people or hospitals.
