Chapter 3 - Northern France

The next morning we headed towards the north of France where we were going to be staying in cabins. Isabella asked me if I was doing ok with Sasha and said that I would have to stay with him on this leg of the trip as well as they had only booked enough cabins for the number of guests. No one wanted to switch partners and therefore I had to stay with Sasha. I shrugged at this as she gave me the keys to my cabin. The cabin was small and cozy looking…but  it only had one bed. Sasha and I both looked at each other awkwardly when we walked in.

‘I can sleep on the floor if you are not comfortable with me in your bed’ Sasha admitted. Not wanting to inconvenience him I just shook my head.

‘It’s fine, really’ I said nervously. It really wasn’t ok, but I didn't want him to think I was being difficult. Chris always told me I made things more complicated than they needed to be.

Once settled in, I left  the cabin to walk around the cute little town. Jamie didn’t provide any suggestions for this place so I was on my own to find something for supper. I found a cute little café by the sea and ordered a coffee, and a slice of quiche lorraine. ‘Mind if we join you, Zayka?’ A familiar accented voice asks. I turned to find Lyosha and Sasha. I motioned for them to have a seat as the waitress brought over my coffee.

‘Deux cafés noir mademoiselle, s'il-vous-plaît' Sasha asked in perfect french holding two fingers up. The waitress nodded at him and walked away.

‘What are you two up to?’ I asked them.

‘Same as you, I assume’ Sasha replied while looking at the menu, ‘Getting acquainted with the area’.

Lyosha carried most of the conversation animatedly, I learned that he was 26, a travel entrepreneur with this company, and that this was his 3rd organised tour. He mentioned that although they did some of the same tours we did, he liked to bring his clients to some of the lesser known treasures in the cities. He said he had contacts all over Europe that were able to secure him entrance to some of the best clubs in town. Sasha was a little dour during the meal, not providing much to the conversation. The guys ordered a bottle of wine to share between us as we enjoyed our meal and watched the sunset. Sasha settled everyone’s bill and offered to walk me back to our cabin. Lyosha didn’t join us but gave me a peck on the cheek.

‘Good night Zayka’ he said to me, ‘Dobroy nochi’ he said to Sasha with a head nod. Sasha stifly  returned the nod as Lyosha left in the opposite direction.

A chill ran through me from the cool breeze. Sasha immediately handed me his sweater.

‘Oh, no thanks, I’m okay’ I said unconvincingly.

‘Put it on’ he said a little harshly ‘… please’ he added, his eyes softening. I obliged, handing him my purse to hold while I pulled on the sweater over my head. It smelled like pine trees, peppermint and musk.

‘Is everything ok?’ I asked him tentatively.

‘Yes, why?’ he returned raising a questioning brow.

‘Well you were awfully quiet at suppertime’ I said tentatively

‘Oh, well, Lyosha hardly ever shuts up does he?’ He answered with a sly smile ‘It’s hard to get a word in with him’ I laughed at this accurate description of Lyosha.

‘Did you know him before the trip?’ I asked.

‘No I met him when he was recruiting clients in my town, and then again on the way here. He was sitting next to me on the plane. But now I know everything about him’ he said in an exasperated tone. ‘He is a good guy though, does he interest you, Malyshka?’ I felt myself blushing.

‘Uhm, no, not really, well... I don't really know him’ I rambled on. Sasha laughed softly.

‘Tell me about yourself, Malyshka’ he said after a few minutes of silence.

‘Uhm.. what do you want to know?’ I shrugged

‘What made you decide to come on this trip for starters?’

‘Ha!’ I barked out. Sasha looked at me inquisitively. ‘A broken heart I guess’

‘So you are hoping to find love on this trip?’ Sasha asked.

‘No… I don’t think so’ I started ‘I think I’m here to bide my time and mend my broken heart’

‘Is it working so far?’

‘Well I haven't really given Chris much thought until now’ I realised. Sasha smiled sadly at me. ‘What about you? Why are you doing this trip?’ I returned.

‘Biding my time, as you put it’ he said simply. I wanted him to elaborate but I also didn’t want to overstep. The thought of Chris reminded me how much I annoyed him when I tried to show interest in his life and asked questions. We continued on our walk mostly in silence. At the cabin Sasha opened the door for me and handed me my purse. I had forgotten to take it back from him when I put his sweater on. I tried to pull his sweater off deftly but my shirt got caught and came halfway up my torso before I realised. I was mortified but Sasha simply smiled at me, pulling my t-shirt down. I changed into my pyjamas and made my way to the bed. The sheets, I notice, were incredibly thin. Although it was early summer, the nights here were cool, and the cabin seemed to keep the warmth out altogether. I looked in the closet to find another blanket but came up empty handed. Sasha walked back into the cabin wearing pyjama pants and a black tank top, his muscular arms on full display.  He inspected the sheets as I did, then he also looked in the closet for a spare blanket.

‘I already checked’ I said to him, ‘no such luck!’

He grabbed the sweatshirt I had been wearing and dug out a pair of woolen socks. He climbed into the bed beside me and pulled me over to him. My eyes widened and I stiffened.

‘Don’t worry,  Malyshka, this is purely to stay warm’ he announced as he pulled me even closer to him, draping his arm around me. The heat radiating off of him warmed me instantly. His forehead rested against the back of my head and his knees touched the back of mine. The front of his body molded perfectly to the back of mine, every part of him was touching me. Chris and I used to snuggle up like this when we first moved in together. A wave of heat washed through me settling between my legs. I tried pushing those thoughts away to focus on getting some sleep.

Sasha influenced my dream that night as his smell and warmth surrounded me. In my dream he slowly undressed me while running his fingers down my spine. His lips were on mine, then on my neck and on my breast. His tongue flicked at my hard nipple while his hand kneaded the other breast. I arched my back to give him better access to my breast and felt his hardness on my thigh. Then I looked up to see Chris’s malicious sneer.

‘As if someone like him would fuck someone as fat and ugly as you’ he sniggered at me. Sasha stopped what he was doing, looked at me wrinkling his nose in disgust. Leyosha appeared with a look of disdain clear on his face as I tried to cover my nakedness.

‘Malyshka?’ I heard a voice calling from afar, ‘Avery!’ Sasha’s hands were grasping my shoulders as he shook me awake. I opened my eyes frantically trying to cover myself with my hands then realised I was dreaming. I stared into his clear blue eyes, as I began to regain consciousness, I dropped my gaze hoping I didn’t talk in my sleep. ‘Did you get a visit from the night hag?’ he asked with a crooked smile. I look at him confused.

‘Who?’

‘Were you having a nightmare, Malyshka?’ he said softly.

‘I think so. Sorry I didn't mean to wake you’. I was hot and sticky from the dream, I climbed out of bed and reached for my water bottle. As I took a drink I admired Sasha who had lain back down on the bed, his  hands were tucked behind his head. His eyes were closed and his long lashes kissed his cheekbones. His sweater was slightly pulled up and I could see his lower abdomen. I coughed trying to stifle a groan of pleasure at this beautiful sight laying in bed before me.

Sasha opened an eye as I coughed and he looked at me. ‘It’s not polite to stare, Malyshka’ he said quietly. I felt the embarrassment run through me. Dream Chris came back into my mind reminding me that I was silly for entertaining the thought of being with a guy like Sasha. This guy was gorgeous, he was completely out of my league.

‘Come here before the night hag catches you again’ he teased. I longed to be in Sasha’s arms again for their warmth, I didn’t need to be told twice. Sasha rolled over in bed away from me. I felt a pang of disappointment that he was moving away from me.

‘It’s your turn to be the big spoon though,’ he declared ‘I can’t get much sleep with your butt moving against my crotch like that. It’s a little distracting’ he finished in amusement. My eyes widened in horror and I felt myself blush again. No one had ever made me blush so much as this cheeky Russian.

‘I’m really sorry I didn't mean to Sasha honest’

‘Relax Avery, I was teasing’. I love the way my name sounds when he says it with his light russian accent.

‘How come you don’t have a heavier accent like Lyosha?’ I asked, lying behind him.

‘I went to school in America’ he answered simply, I opened my mouth to ask more questions but he beat me to it. ‘Go to sleep, and stop teasing me, Zayka’’ I realised I was tracing the length of the bulging veins on his arm.  Mortified by my action, I abruptly pulled my arm in front of me to create a barrier between our bodies. I felt him chuckle as he reached back for my arm and laid it across his taut abdomen. I quickly fell asleep again, warm and cozy.

A loud banging noise jolted me awake the next morning. It took me a minute to figure out where I was. I looked around and noted that I was alone in the bed. Sasha was gone but I noticed a plate full of fresh fruit, bread and cheese on the desk. The banging came again but this time I realised someone was at the door. I looked at myself in the mirror quickly before opening the door. Isabella was looking at me worried. ‘I didn’t realise you were still sleeping, we were worried when we didn’t see you at breakfast this morning. Is everything ok?’

Sasha woke me with a gentle kiss on the nose. I was relieved to be getting up and to forget about the dreams I had. He was already dressed wearing a navy blue long sleeved shirt and black running shorts. His hair was messy, whether on purpose or not, it suited him. His jawline was covered in day old stubble, I didn’t think it was possible for any man to look this sexy. His eyebrows knitted together as he looked at me, concern and discomfort written all over his face.

It was a mad rush to get all my things packed the next day despite not having a large room. I felt that I was bound to forget something because of my lack of preparedness. I had a sore neck and a headache from sleeping on Sasha’s lap and drinking too many beers at the bonfire. I grabbed a couple of acetaminophen as Sasha carried our luggage to the bus. We met at the dining hall for a quick breakfast, choosing to sit in a secluded nook by a window.

I woke up to Sasha softly humming a familiar tune sometimes during the early morning. He was squatting down over his bag wearing nothing but a black muscle shirt and boxer briefs. The soft light from the bathroom was casting shadows on him that emphasised the strong musculature of his thighs and calves. Although he stood up with his back to me, I gasped when he removed his underwear to slip into a clean pair, getting a quick glimpse at his ass. He also pulled on some shorts, a sweater, and a ball cap before leaving the room. It took me a little bit of time to process that it was the morning and Sasha was probably heading out for a run. I was feeling horny and slightly pervy after w

There’s a heavy weight pressing on my bladder when I woke up and I was surprised to see Sasha still in bed with me, his arm across my abdomen. He had taken off his pants before falling asleep and was currently only wearing his boxer briefs, socks, and a muscle shirt. He looked incredibly peaceful and vulnerable in his sleep. I kissed his nose and tried to get out from under his arm without waking him. I wasn’t terribly swift though; his eyes flew open and he frowned at me momentarily. He focused his eyes on me, his face relaxing and gave me a small dopey smile.

It was pouring rain when I woke up the next morning, the perfect day for me to get things done at the library. Sasha accompanied me to the library but he didn’t stay with me. I had to register for an account in order to use the computers, then spent 2 hours filling out forms, replying to emails, reply to video comments and post some of the pictures Sasha and I had taken yesterday. At the end of my session, I roamed the library and admired the artwork there.

Our hotel in Milan was a luxurious affair once again. I opened my eyes when I heard the door latch. Instead of Sasha coming up the stairs I found a note he wrote on the pillow next to me.‘Gone for a run. Be back soon, don’t leave’ followed by 11 numbers. I’ve always assumed every country followed the same phone number pattern but maybe Russia was different and this was his phone number. I looked at the clock and saw that it was only 5 am. I shook my head. ‘Crazy man’ I muttered. I held the note in my hand and closed my eyes.

Sasha's POVAvery moved close to me and discarded my vest, I had long ago discarded my jacket and tie and undid the top few buttons of my shirt. She slowly undid the rest of the buttons on my shirt and ran an open palm across my chest. I was having an out of body moment, I couldn’t believe this wasmywife. This was the woman I had married and she was going to be with me forever. She undid my belt and the clasp that held my pants up. As soon as she let go of them, the pants fell to the ground, pooling at my feet. She smiled as she looked at my new underwear. She wasn’t the only one who could splurge on fancy underthings.‘Damn Kuzco’ she exclaimed, using the nickname my teammates had graced me with, ‘Versace?’ she questioned arching an eyebrow up, a grin stretching across her gorgeous face. She put her index finger under the distinctive band and ran it back and forth against my pelvis.

At 4h30 a stretched SUV picked us up from Sam's to bring us to my wedding. My heart sped up in excitement at seeing my groom and of having all the attention drawn to us. Kate did a few little touch ups as we entered the hall and the music promptly began playing at 5pm. I smiled as an instrumental version of Heart’s Alone began to play. Grace and Carter walked to the front of the room followed by Shae and Sam, Dmitry, Kate and Katya. It was finally my turn to walk down the aisle. As soon as I walked into the warm cozy room everyone stood up. I felt myself blush at all the attention I was getting but once I met Sasha’s eyes everything around me faded away. His piercing gaze took me in and he quickly wiped his eyes. I tried to keep my own tears at bay taking jagged sobbing breaths as I joined him up at the makeshift altar, his tears now freely running down his cheeks faster than he could wipe them away. Dmitry handed him a handkerchief as people laughed slightly a

On the 26th Celina invited Sasha and I to the venue to approve of the decoration at the hall we had booked. Sasha and I gasped in shock as we walked into our wedding reception. The floor to ceiling windows looked out into a valley of snow covered evergreens, the walls and ceiling were all finished in rustic wood. A large glass chandelier hung in the center of the cathedral ceiling, emitting a soft golden glow in the room. On the far wall a large stone fireplace sat majestically where I imagined we would have a roaring fire the next day. The table of honour was set up proudly on a platform at the right of the fireplace while all the other tables were to the left of it. Directly in front of the fireplace was an empty area which would become a dance floor later on in the evening. More tables were set up further away from the fireplace meant for food and drinks. The chairs were covered with a forest green material, while the tables were covere

I spent the week jotting down notes and reviewing more of Anna’s recommendations. Sasha and I had narrowed down a few venues and a wedding planner but he insisted on being completely responsible for the DJ. We sent our choices to Anna who booked everything we had agreed on and footed the bill. The next weekend Sasha and I worked on our guest list to get a better idea of which venue to choose. We both decided to have a small intimate wedding since we had both enjoyed the intimacy of Dmitry and Kate’s wedding and the fact that they were able to enjoy their day too.‘Do you want to invite everyone in your family?’ I asked ‘Aunts, uncles, cousins’ I enumerated.‘My parents and brothers and my uncle Igor and his family in Michigan’ he said.‘That’s it?’ I asked stunned,‘I only have one uncle,’ Sasha said, shrugging.

Baby, husband, house and businesses aside, fourth year was a tough one for Kate and I as we delved into critical care nursing. We had a jam packed schedule with hardly a moment to take a breath. I skipped running with Sasha more often than I should and we hardly saw each other as his hockey practices became more serious and frequent. Sasha planned on making his last year in the AHL a good one, one where he could finally bring home the Calder cup. However, something in his tone hinted at the KHL and maybe another season at the AHL. I made it clear that I supported him no matter what decision he made, even if it meant going to Russia for a few years.I did not take many shifts at the restaurant as I tried to keep my head above water with homework, clinicals and housekeeping. I didn’t want to make Sasha feel like he was unimportant either, so I tried to go to as many of his games as I could without hindering my university performance. I still relied on

Third year nursing meant that we were doing clinicals in acute settings in the hospital. I was particularly fond of the surgical and maternity units. Kate however did not enjoy her maternity rotation, seeing all the things her body was about to go through freaked her out a little. It didn't help that her first maternity patient had a 3rd degree perineum tear and her second one had to have an emergency C-section with hysterectomy as her uterus had ruptured beyond repair. Despite being terrified of giving birth, her pregnancy was textbook perfect. She was only gaining baby weight, her blood pressure and sugars were normal and she didn’t experience any morning sickness. A lot of it probably had to do with her and Dmitry’s regimen of working out and healthy eating. The year wrapped up nicely as did Sasha’s season. Though they didn’t make it to the finals again that year, he had been bearable throughout the playoffs. In

My dream was not to be a hockey trainer, but a boxing and MMA trainer. I wanted to open up a gym here and the head trainer position would help me get there. Two years was plenty of time for me to get a decent sum of money and get my dream on track.I was able to get a decent sign on bonus to put a down deposit on a house a few streets away from Sasha and Avery’s before the end of the summer. It didn't take me long to ask Kate to move in with me. She was a perfect little girlfriend, my little princess, and I wanted to see her everyday despite our hectic schedule. Her and Avery were about to start on their third year of nursing and I figured it would be just as advantageous for them to live close together as it was for Sasha and I to be within walking distance of each othe

Sam never asked why I was staying at his place, but he let me stay there nonetheless. He and Janice had just returned from a trip to Costa Rica. They had been seeing each other since she took the job at the diner. They were an odd couple to say the least. Janice was always so happy and easy going whereas Sam had always been the eternal bachelor in my mind. They lived separately, but Sam was often staying the night at Janice’s. He came back to do some work and enjoy his alone time. I worked closely with Janice at the diner to oversee all the changes she had made and I was impressed with her level of dedication to the place.‘Are you going to Sasha’s game Friday?’ Sam asked when I got to his place a few days later.‘Yes, I always go to his home games’ I answered.‘It’s just he dropped off tickets earlier for Peter, Jamie and I, but not for you’ he said with a raised brow.‘Oh… that’s w

We were finally in the exam period, and Sasha's team had made it to the playoffs. The tension at home was palpable, it was Sasha vs. everyone and we were all on edge. Dmitry and I did our best to stay out of Sasha’s way, but unlike me, Dmitry was quick to put Sasha in his place when he took out his frustration on either one of us. Sasha was short tempered, irritable and exhausted. He did not do well with stress, that much was obvious. He was never aggressive on purpose but he did not hold back what he was thinking. The exam period spanned over two weeks. My first exam was scheduled the day after Sasha’s first playoff game. I wanted to be supportive of his career so I made sure to attend his home games. I knew they were his most important games. I spent the week leading up to them studying so that I could attend the night before. I sat with my brothers and cheered on with them as his team won the first game of the quarter finals. Sasha wa
