Grant answers a few urgent emails and makes a number of calls before telling his assistant that he will see him at the joint meeting later. “If anyone asks, I’m in a meeting and will be for the rest of the day. Take a message or number and I’ll get back to them as soon as I can” he instructs before leaving to meet Amber. Seeing Jane walking towards him he decides to take the stairs quickly. He's sorry he ever agreed to allow her to follow him from the publishing company he worked in with Stacey to his parents company.
As he leaves he wonders why his mother seems so against him working on the joint project and how she found out so quickly. His mind throws a hundred possibilities at him, but he's learnt not to jump to conclusions. He'll be more vigilant from now on and also try and talk to his mother once he's got his thoughts in order.
When he draws up outside her company, he see’s her waiting outside and gets out to open her door. “Thank you, I hear there is congestion on 6th. So best to take Cliff and then take 12th” she informs him politely.
“Yes I heard, burst water pipe, best to keep clear. How are you today?” he asks her
“I’m good a little excited for our first official meeting. I have looked over the building site both on paper and the pictures that where sent, as well as doing a drive by. It has great possibilities with it being close to all major public transport route's. I think we should ask the council to cooperate with us and make the routes easier for everyone to use. So, I’ve asked them to send a representative to see if we can work together and make the route’s more accessible for everyone. By adding voice information to their electronic info boards so when the transport arrives announcing it clearly what number, which route it is and so on” she answers
He smiles as she has already thought of so many things to help people become more independent. “Impressive, I was only able to glance at the info sent to us. It’s a good idea about transport too. If we an get the local council to help update their transport around the area of the school it would be a great help and hopefully successful enough to have others incorporate it in their transport routes” he praises
“Would you mind if we do a drive through, I seem to not have had enough coffee yet?” he asks her
“Of course not, if we go to Dixies, I could get one of their mixed fruit smoothies” she agrees “Dixies it is then” he replies happily.
“Have you always worked in your family business?” she asks him
Grant smiles and glances at her before answering “I had to have eye surgery to correct my vision. Before that I was practically blind so worked on translating text books into braille and other learning material. Once I had the surgery, I was able to take up the position I have today within the family business.”
“You have first hand experience of what its like living with a disability. I might be picking your brain a little more after knowing this” she says grinning.
“So, my near blindness is helpful to you?” he asks jokingly “yes, very much” she jokes back making him laugh. She is the same as she was, not caring about the fact he was near blind. She always treats everyone the same.
They do the drive through getting drinks and from there it only takes another 20 minutes to get to the factory where the new material is being made. “I spoke to the manager here and he is very excited about the fact the new material might be used for this new project. He was telling me they are working on, colour tags, that will be woven into the material so people can tell at a touch what colour it is” she explains to him
Grant really likes how dedicated she is at finding new tech to help people live more independent lives. “That would have been very handy to me. I’m sure if they get it right, it will really help the whole shopping experience for a good many people” he responds.
They park up and get out the car, and someone meets them at the door “Ms. Greenbank?” she ask them.
Amber nods and introduces Grant to the woman “nice to meet you, I’m Mrs. Knocks, Mr. Knights assistant. He is taking a call at the moment, so can I get you a drink?” she offers leading them into the building and up a short flight of stairs.
“We did a drive through on the way here, thanks” Amber answers as the door opens and a short stout man walks through. “Ms. Greenbank, nice to meet you” he says holding out his hand to shake. Amber shakes it “call me Amber please, and this is Grant Muster from Grade Technology and Innovation” she introduces.
They shake hands and then Mr. Knight shows them around the factory, telling them that his sister is near blind and his son has learning difficulties, so he wanted to use his skills to help them live easier. He shows Grant the colour tag material they are working on and Grant see’s how it will really help with shopping as well as choosing which clothes to wear on a daily basis. "It would also be helpful to have colour charts made that show which colours go well together as they have mnever seen colour so just knowing what colour it is though helpful. Doesn't tell them if it goes well with another colour" Grant suggests
"We have been thinking the same thing. We are in the middle of creating a colour code book that will explain what colours go well with each other. At the moment we are just concentrating on the most regulary used colour combo's but later we hope to make once for people with different tastes, like rock, chic and so on" Mr. Knight explains further.
When he shows them, the textured wall covering and textiles they’ve managed to produce that will really help with defining different areas throughout the building. Amber becomes very animated. “We’ve also been able to apply this to a very durable plastic that once heated can have any word or sentence printed on it. Then once heated again can be changed quickly, for different uses” Mr. Knight informs them.
“It wouldn’t over heat?” Amber asks “no, we have included a safety feature that it can only be heated to a certain temp and then will auto shut off if left on for more than five minutes” he replies making Amber smile
“Could a voice be added to speak the things written on it once touched?” she asks, Mr. Knight taps his chin thinking, then lifts a finger in the air “if we add a small window to one corner, we could use cell phone tech for it to announce the sentence written. We’d have to protect it from the heat source, but a small amount of installation should suffice as well as a small chip to hold the words needed” he says as though to himself.
Then he snaps his fingers “that would also work with our direction strips we are working on” he says going to walk away until his assistant coughs, reminding him, he is still with guests “oh sorry, I can get a little side tracked. That is a great suggestion and I should have thought of it myself” he says to Amber.
“We are also working on direction strips, that will help, if put on benches, walls, railings and even glass windows. If they know how far they are from the subway, library and so on. It will help inform them, they are on the right path and how far it is to the destination. We are thinking Bluetooth though, as they can then login and key in where they want to go” Grant tells him.
“Yes, yes, if the indicators had Bluetooth, they would only have to pass them for them to hear through an ear piece where they where and such. The hard of hearing could have the visual indicators or marks to help them and the visual and hearing impaired would be able to feel the indicators” Mr. Knight agrees with him.
“We could share some of our ideas and see if we can find solutions from each others tech” Grant suggests.
Mr. Knight shakes his hand “we’d love too” he agrees “I wonder if we could weave Bluetooth tech into our fabrics? It could be used in luggage identification too” he says wondering off down the corridor. He stops and turns around “sorry, come with me” he says
He shows them into another room that is filled with high tech machines. Written on the wall is the words, nothing is worth doing if not done properly. He shows them their latest tech, which they bought to help them weave or add other materials to something else.
They spend a little more time talking about the impact that the new tech can have on people’s lives, before leaving. Grant asks her if she has time for lunch. She agrees and they go to a place on the way back into the city centre again.
“Was it a new procedure that helped you regain your sight?” she asks he shakes his head “not really it had been around for a while but I really didn’t know if I wanted to chance it or not as the success rate at the time was about 50/50” he replies.
“But you did decide to go through with it, in the end?” she questions “yes, I decided that it was worth the risk as my sight was nearly gone anyway. I had nothing to lose and I really wanted to be more independent” he explains
“You have very beautiful eyes. The rich chocolate colour looks warm and friendly” she praises him. He smiles a little sadly as that was something Stacey often said as she also loved his eyes.
They talk about how they could use the materials they just saw in the new build project. They will talk a little at the meeting later about budgets for each area of the build. “Do you mind if I work a little before the meeting?” Amber asks he shakes his head no “I also have my laptop with me. I will be able to check and answer emails and such” he agrees with her.
They work for an hour before having to leave, to go to the meeting which is at Marcus’s office building. They arrive and park in the building’s carpark as Grant’s phone rings. “Sorry excuse me for a moment” Grant says answering it.
“Jane what do you want?” he asks sounding annoyed. “I said it wasn’t necessary and I’m already here. It would be best for you not to involve yourself in my work and concentrate on your own” he says before ending the call.
“Sorry, some people just don’t know how to draw the line” he says turning back around towards Amber. “I think I must give off certain vibes, as most people keep their distance from me when working” she jokes. He laughs as they head towards the elevator “I find that hard to believe, you just might not give them the time of day, as you are so involved in your work” he defends her.
“Clive has often said, that my focus is admirable. I’m not sure if he is teasing or being serious” she answers and he laughs again. “People would kill to have a certain amount of concentration or focus that they can block others out” he praises her.
Amber looks at him “to the extent where you could even pass your own mother in the street?” she asks he looks at her as his eyes go wide “you didn’t?” he says as they step out of the elevator. She only has time to nod and Grant to shake his head in wonder, before Marcus greets them.
“Look at you two getting on, as though you’ve known each other for years” he states seeing how happy they look. “We seem to be on the same wave length and I’m looking forward to working with Grant more after talking to him this morning” Amber admits making Grants smile turn into a grin.
When everyone has arrived and introductions made, Marcus takes them through what he envisions and expects from the project. He then puts some key people in charge of smaller groups so they can report to him and update him on progress. Grant is in charge of the sub group that will research and design the inner finishes and furnishing, with Amber as his second to help decide on colour preferences and overall finishes.Amber also tells them about their visit to the textile factory and the advances they’ve made that will really help them out. When Ms. Harper a rather snobby designer who thinks that education is everything. Questions Amber about her qualifications to be in such a leading role.Amber looks at her and tells her to ask her anything of the new tech available to them and their uses? She asks her a few questions, which Amber answers well with a lot more info than most know. When Ms. Harper seems to struggle to find another question to ask her. Grant says “people don’t nee
“I had a lovely time thank you” Amber says looking at him brightly. “I did too, can you give me a little time? I think we should take things slow, we have only just started working together and it would be a shame to rush things” Grant says finding it difficult to find the right words to express himself.“Of course, this is all new territory for me too, so slow is good” Amber agrees not seeing the apprehension in his eyes. “Thank you, I’ll talk to you Monday if not before” he says allowing her to walk into her complex. As he gets in his car, he sighs and rubs the ache he has in his chest. He’ll text Amber’s doctor tomorrow and hopefully she will be able to shed some light on how he deals with his conflicting feelings. He drives home with his emotions seesawing from happiness to worry. He really does still love her, but at the end of the day she thinks she is a different person. So wouldn’t that mean he is cheating? He hits the stirring wheel in frustration and tries to push th
The next morning Amber’s mother is waiting for her as she leaves her room for her run. “I need to talk to you” she says “you know how important my morning run is, its also an early start for me today. So, it will have to wait until tonight” Amber tells her.“Can't you leave your run for one day?” her mother asks “mum is this about Grant?” Amber asks “yes, yes, it is” she replies “then no, I’m not willing to miss my run, I will come home after work and listen to whatever you have to say” Amber tells her before grabbing her water bottle and heading out the door. She turns up her music and runs to the beat, trying not to think about anything other than what she has to do that day. Her mother is in her room when she gets back. Amber gets a quick shower and grabs a banana and calls bye to her mother before leaving. She hits the ground running once at work. Doesn’t stop until just after lunch where she manages to grab a sandwich and eat it on the go. She manages to text Grant saying h
It’s Tuesday and Amber, is very excited about seeing Grant again. He will pick her up from work at 11am and take her around his family’s research facility. They’ve made some very interesting discoveries over the last few years. To help not just the visually impaired, but other disabled people with a number of impairments. Not long ago they made a watch that will monitor your heart rate and alert you if it starts to fluctuate too much. It can also send the info to their doctor, so they are kept up to date with any problems they might be having.“See you later Clive, have a good day” Amber says as they exist the elevator and she walks to her office. “Don’t forget you promised the boys that you’d go swimming with them later?” he reminds her, making her laugh “as if you’d let me forget! I know you want Mary all to yourself” she jokes, he shrugs as she’s not wrong and salutes her as he disappears down the corridor to his own office. She has just sat down at her desk and turned the co
Amber wakes wondering why she would dream of her sister with Grant. She ponders on it while she gets ready for work and decides the best thing to do is talk to her doctor. Over the years she has helped her with her feelings of guilt about being alive when her sister isn’t. Maybe this is the same thing? The boys are having breakfast when she goes down. “Well, we’ve just heard that Grant went swimming with you and the boys” Mary says looking a little too excited by the news. “Yes, I looked around his family’s research facility yesterday and mentioned it to him. He taught the boys to dive from the one-meter board” Amber explains“He did? You didn’t tell us that boys” their mother says turning to them. “Nate has been a little preoccupied by other things” Clive says in way of explanation, which has Mary all smiles again. Not liking the look on Mary’s face Amber makes an excuse about needing to get to work early.“Go, you lucky girl. We’ll talk tonight” Mary says a little cryptical
Amber really does feel that Grant does like her, for herself. But there is still this doubt she has, that there is something more. She has asked Grant to give her some time to sort out her feelings, but she already knows she likes him a lot. What she really needs is time to figure out if she is going to be living in her sister’s shadow? The trip back to the city was a quiet one, as they each thought about their own things. Last night though, Grant sent a text wishing her a goodnight. She dreamt of Grant again only this time they were married and living happily with two children of their own. It had left her feeling all warm and tender when she woke-up.Now she is back at work trying to finalise her work schedule with Alice. In order for her to be away for a few days with Mr. Lacey’s stores fronts. She is due to leave later today and will be away for three days. Once she is finished with her assistant she then sighs and picks up her office phone. She calls her mother “now you
Grant and Amber stay in the hospital together that night. When he comes around and see’s he is on a bed with a drip. He looks over to Amber “you passed out due to low blood sugar levels and shock. Are you feeling better?” Amber explains and asks. “How embarrassing, sorry I was in a bit of a state while looking for you. I can’t believe that anyone would go so far as knocking another person out and locking them in a room that isn’t being used. If you hadn’t been meeting Clive, we might never have known you’d gone missing until it was too late” he says setting the monitor off that is attached to his finger.A nurse comes in and checks his blood pressure and vitals. “It is important to try and stay calm. Think of pleasant things or best yet sleep” she tells him. He nods apologising. Amber though worried for him. Is secretly pleased he feels so much for her. They talk a little more before falling back to sleep again. Grant wakes to find the drip gone and Amber still sound asle
The boys love their gifts and Amber leaves happily. She arrives home to find a note from her mum telling her she is out with the women’s group and that she’ll be back later. Amber sends a text to Grant telling him she is home and about to take a soak in the tub. But her mother hasn’t dried the floor to well after having a shower and Amber slips banging her head again. She loses consciousness just for a short time. When she wakes up she picks up her phone and calls Grant.“Hi handsome, I think I just hit my head. But I’m alright, thought I’d give you a call just in case. How was your day?” Grant looks at his phone and frowns as it sounds like Stacey calling him. “Are you sure you’re alright?” he asks “don’t worry, maybe I shouldn’t have called you? It’s not like you could jump in the car and drive over. Sorry, my mistake. I’m going to take some pain killers for my headache and then I’ll have an early night. You have that meeting with the publishers so, you should get an ear
It’s been six months since Grant and her mother have seen Stacey properly. They did go up for the open house day, two months ago. But it was too short and if anything, they just missed her more. The therapy was going well she was remembering more and more but she still referred to Stacey as the third person. Liz had explained that it was her last string to cut. She is apprehensive, so was finding it hard to let go of that final piece of Amber. They are together again, planning another video to send her. “We could do another baking video, let’s bake her some of the coconut squares that Stacey loved?” Grant suggests to her mother. They were sitting in the coffee shop near the entrance of her mother’s apartment. Grant had made the decision about four months ago to buy there too. He now lived in the third block of apartments, that was furthest away from the entrance of their gated community. But closer to the small lake, park and trails. He had become much closer to her mother
Amber arrives at the country clinic and shown to her room. Liz has explained to her on the trip up. That they will use some intense therapy, showing her pictures retelling stories that happened in the past. All to jog her memory. She has been warned that it can sometimes be very painful, but to imagine it as forcing a very rusty door open in your mind. Once it’s opened the pain has gone and the future is whole and open to you again.Images have been flashing in her mind but come so quickly she is unable to see them clearly, but with the images come different emotions. It is the emotions that linger far longer than the images. Liz has told her to just take it easy for the rest of the day getting to know her surroundings and settling into her room. She is allowed to do some off line work after breakfast for an hour. Then after that she will go to Liz before lunch, then break for lunch and then go to group therapy. Until mid-afternoon and then rest for an hour. They have dinner
They spend the day, relaxing in Grants apartment. Both happy to stay at home as they both feel as though they have things to think about. When he’s walking her out of his apartment building, later that day to hail a cab for her. Amber pauses as a car break’s hard causing it to screech along the road out front. The sound causes Amber to relive the accident. As her head hits the car, she staggers back. Making Grant grab her around the waist to stop her from falling. As she remembers hitting the ground her hand goes up to her head and she feels the scar along her scalp. She looks at Grant wide eyed and her eyes roll back in her head as she passes out. She isn’t out long though. Just long enough for Grant to lower her to the floor and hold her to him. She blinks open her eyes “it was me, that was hit?” she questions, “Grant I want to go home, I need to talk to my mother?” she continues before he can say anything.“You aren’t feeling dizzy?” he asks her, she shakes her head no.
Over the next few days Amber switches from herself to Stacey. She begins to remember some of the time's, she is Stacey. But doesn’t realise that she has changed personalities. She just thinks of them as memory lapses, that she then remembers some of. She is becoming stressed about it though, thinking she has an underlying mental problem. When she talks to her doctor, she asks her to go in and does some tests on her. The tests show that her memories are slowly coming back. She is told to not stress over it too much, as there is no health problems to worry about. Her doctor does ask her to keep a journal of the times, she can’t remember and to jot down when she does remember things and what they are. They go to watch the first ground breaking of the joint project. The first phase has been approved and they have started to prepare the ground for the foundation to be layed. Grant made sure to keep Amber next to him and hold her hand whenever possible. To let others know they wer
Grant pretends to be asleep, so Amber can get up and grab her clothes before running to the bathroom. He gets off the bed and goes into the kitchen to start breakfast, while waiting for Amber. She comes out a little later, looking refreshed, even wearing the clothes from yesterday. “I’ll grab a quick shower and then breakfast will be ready. You didn’t call your mum last night she might be worried?” he tells her. Amber smiles at him “I received a text from her saying she was going to go visit her sister. She’ll be back sometime next week.”Grant nods and goes to get his shower. Amber lays the table and makes them coffee. Grant is true to his word and is back just ten minutes later. They sit and have breakfast and then a thought hits Grant. How did she know where everything was? “Did you find everything okay?” he asks herAmber looks at him and then the table “I did thank you” she answers looking thoughtful. “So, if your mum isn’t about, you can spend another day with me?” G
