"So have you lived here long?" Vanessa queried.
"I came to Oak when I was a baby, yourself?" Rex replied.
"I'm from a small town called Valen," she said.
"I've never heard of a place called Valen," Rex said racking his brain for a place with that name, "Where is that?"
"It's a small place, to the east, not far from the ocean," she smiled, "My mother moved here for an important job, and she dragged me with her," She frowned, Rex could tell she was not happy about it.
"Well with it being so close to the end of school exams, I'm not surprised you're not happy about the move, new school, new teachers, that's a lot of pressure on you," Rex sympathized.
"My mother certainly puts a lot of pressure on me, that's for sure," she muttered, still frowning.
To lighten her mood Rex asked about her likes, they spoke about movies, and books, and Rex spoke about the river.
*RIIIIIINNNNGGG*
Damn! Just when Rex thought he was truly getting somewhere with her, lunch was already over, he waited for Vanessa to stand first, both said their goodbyes and he watched her walk off, ‘That is one incredible woman’ he said to himself.
Classes after lunch went surprisingly quickly, Rex found it hard to concentrate, zoning out constantly, picturing Vanessa in his mind quite a lot, it seemed the first girl to speak to him so nicely had left quite the impression on him.
When it came time for the second break, to Rex's surprise Vanessa was sitting on his bench again, this was unbelievable for him, usually, they got scared off and didn’t want anything to do with him.
"About time," she smiled, turning her wrist over, pretending to look at a watch.
‘I could watch her smile like that every day’ Rex thought to himself, "Sorry got held up by the teacher," quickly thinking of an excuse, he had actually walked a little slower than usual because he was looking to see if Vanessa had slotted into any of the more popular groups, being a girl with her looks and obvious charm he thought she would be suited to be hanging out with them.
After sitting on the bench, they continued their conversation from earlier, talking about their previous schooling and hobbies, ‘Wow her old school sounds worse than this one’ Rex thought, he did physical education at his school, but hers sounded like military camp with how much fitness training Vanessa said they did, Rex then spoke more about the Red River, and how the flowers bloomed strangely on Rex's birthday every year.
He had a sideways glance at her, as he usually did, he wasn't able to pull his eyes away from her it seemed.
Huh?? Her eyes are green...
"What's wrong with your eyes?" He asked, leaning forward to get a better look at her.
Blinking quickly Vanessa turned away and then back to him, "What do you mean?"‘Her eyes are blue again, I could've sworn I just saw them green,’ he thought.
"Oh sorry, it must've been the sun getting into my eyes or something, I thought your eyes looked green for a second there!" Rex chuckled.
"Don’t be silly, people can't change their eye colour" Vanessa giggled.
Soon the bell rang for the last classes again, once more bidding her farewell and watching her walk away before he left himself, he was plagued by the thought that he could've sworn they were a different colour, must just be nervous, she was very pretty and Rex didn't have a lot of experience talking to women.
Once school had finished, Rex grabbed his bike, and started peddling off, as he shot around the front gate, he noticed the familiar brown hair and knew who it was.
Vanessa had just opened a car door and was getting in with a very sour-looking woman in the driver’s seat, ‘That must be her mother’, he thought, when the woman saw Rex, if looks could kill, he would've died a thousand times that instant. ‘Wow, I can understand why Vanessa didn't want to come with her, she looks extremely angry’ Rex admitted, shuddering slightly at how intense the woman’s stare was.
With the woman's glare firmly on him, Rex rode off again towards home, wondering what he had done to receive a look like that, ‘maybe a protective mother’ he shrugged.
It didn't take him long to round the corner close to his house.
*BANG*
Suddenly Rex was heading over the front handlebars, "Oh shiiiiiiiitttt!” He cried out.
Hitting the ground he rolled for a bit, groaned once he stopped and sat up, instinctively starting to run his hand over his arms and legs, 'nothing broken that's always a good sign, skin off in a few places, but all in one piece, overall not too bad' he concluded, getting to his feet and dusting himself off, he looked over to his bike and saw the front tire had burst, with only a few pieces of the tire left on the rim, 'that explains why I went over the front, I have never seen a tire disintegrate though, that's weird.'
"They are new tires, I don't understand..." Rex said tugging at the pieces of tire that were still hanging onto the rim, attempting to find out what had popped it, 'Huh? There's nothing even here' he thought, lifting the front of the bike up and twisting and turning the rim to try and get a better view.
‘Wait a minute, what is this...’
A tiny sharp disk had gone through the tire and lodged itself firmly into the metal rim.
"What the!!??" He said seeing it, "that doesn’t belong in there."It was definitely stuck in there, he tried for a minute to pull it out without success, ‘I'll need some of the tools at home’ he thought.
Pushing his bike the last block home, he limped in through the gate, the shock from his accident was wearing off and the pain was starting to show, Rex dropped the bike into the garage on his way inside.
"Hey Iris! You'll never guess what just happened!!"
"Is that you Rex?" Iris called out, rounding the corner into the dining room at the same time Rex had entered, "Oh my god what happened to you?" She exclaimed, seeing him covered from head to toe in dirt and wearing torn clothes, "Did those boys beat you up again? I might have to talk to their mothers" she said angrily while fidgeting over Rex to examine his injuries.
"No gran, it wasn't that my front tyre on my bike blew and threw me forwards over the handlebars. I'm ok except for a few cuts and scrapes, my clothes seem to be the in the worst condition," Rex said trying his best to get Iris to stop fussing over him.
"What cuts and scrapes?" After turning him around and looking him up and down once more, she said, "You have none on you that I can see."
"What do you mean? My knees and elbows are all busted...up??" He stammered, getting confused as he twisted and turned his arms and legs around in shock, there was nothing beside a dried blood mark to show the damage he had sustained from his bike accident that had only just happened mere minutes ago.
"Well ok then, if you don't want to tell me you got beaten up again, you don't have to lie to me, so unless you can heal yourself at an incredible rate, which I have never heard of, and mind you is impossible to do by yourself, without someone who knows that type of magic, which means you aren't telling me the truth," Iris said, frowning in frustration.
"I know what happened, I don't know what to tell you, I've told you the truth, if you don't believe me, then fine, don't!" He snapped back, getting quite irritated before storming off upstairs to get changed out of his torn clothes.
‘I know what happened’ he muttered to himself while he changed his outfit, ‘I saw the cuts myself, now they are gone, this just keeps getting weirder’ he thought to himself, getting a slight headache from trying to figure out what had happened between the accident and seeing Iris.
Deciding to clear his mind, he jumped up and headed back out into the garage, “May as well fix my bike and maybe find out what caused all this drama.”
He passed through the dining room without seeing Iris at all, passing the table he noticed a note.
*
Rex,
Have headed out for a stroll, I'll be home before dinner.
Ps. Please don't drink all the juice again.
Love You
Iris

With Iris being out of the house meant Rex could play his music while fixing his bike, without her complaints of 'it’s too loud' or 'I don't like that type of music, it sounds like they are screaming.' Starting up his phone speaker and placing it on the shelf over his head, he flipped his bike over to get a better look at what damage the bike had sustained.
He peeled the tyre and tube off from the rim, grabbed a pair of pliers from the small toolbox he kept on the shelf and began attempting to extract the steel coin-shaped object he had just found embedded into the rim.
"Wow this thing is really in there!" He exclaimed, the process taking him 5 minutes of twisting and pulling to get the object out, taking it in his palm he brought it closer to his face, it looked like a sharpened coin, no larger than an inch in diameter, with some strange symbols he had never seen before, he went to turn the coin over, clumsily dropping it onto the concrete with a *Ting* sound.
"Holy s**t!" He cursed bending over to pick the coin back up, just dropping the coin that short distance had chipped a tiny piece of concrete on the garage floor, putting the coin into his pocket so he could inspect it closer later on, he replaced his damaged rim, replaced his tube and tyre and set his bike back up, good as new.
Walking back upstairs to his room, he sat in his chair looking quite closely at the coin trying to figure out what made it so special, he started to daydream about its origins, closed his eyes and then it wasn't long before he fell asleep from pure exhaustion.
Waking up still in his chair the next morning, he groaned, threw on some fresh clothes and headed downstairs, he wasn’t in the mood for his usual morning game, so he greeted Iris with a “good morning” and she replied with her usual chirpy greeting, today he would spend some time with Iris, maybe that's why she was unhappy with him he had concluded, regretting not spending time with her as much as he usually did, even though he was with Iris, one person kept floating into his mind.
Vanessa.
Monday rolled around and Rex had a spring in his step, he did his usual morning and headed off on his bike to school.
Once entering the school, he threw his bike down and headed straight for the main building, hoping to catch Vanessa coming in, after waiting out the front until the class bell sounded, he thought maybe she was already inside, shrugging he went into his first class.
No surprise as lunch came closer, it became hard for Rex to focus on anything else except who he was off to meet very shortly.
After the bell for lunch sounded, he raced out and around the last building before the yard and headed to his usual bench, seeing who was there waiting for him, again, he couldn't help but smile and look at her brown curly hair that touched her shoulders, her perfect skin in the sunlight, what a sight she was.
Seeing Rex coming she waved him to hurry over.
"Wow you're quick, you beat me here again!" Rex said with a smile.
"Well my class was just up there by the yard," Vanessa said smiling and pointing, "Didn't take me long to get here at all slow poke"
"Lucky you," he chuckled.
"Rex I would like to ask you something," Vanessa said with a serious look on her face.
"Anything," he said quickly.
"I would like to have dinner with you. If it’s ok, we could do it at your house and could cook for me, like all romantic and such," she said, putting on a shy smile.
This was unbelievable, for the first time a girl had asked Rex on a date!!
"Absolutely!!" He said not even holding back his delight.
They exchanged numbers while smiling and began their lunch.
‘I can't cook for shit, but surely Iris will help me,’ he thought to himself, I must do my best to impress her!
Once the bell had gone, they left for class after saying their goodbyes, class went quickly for Rex again, racing back off to the bench.
‘Hm, I’ve beaten her for once’ he chuckled to himself, sitting down he waited, and waited, checked his phone, and waited, lunch was almost up now! Where was she!
*DING* went his phone, it was a message.
'Hey Rex, it's Vanessa here, I've cut myself during a cooking class and had to go home, I hope we are still on for tonight.'
'No worries at all' he replied quickly, sending his address and telling her ‘Dinner by 6?'
'Perfect' she said.
He couldn't be happier than he was right now.
Nothing could ruin his night…
Rex could barely hold his attention in his class, the only thing he could think about was dinner plans, what meals he wanted to try, dining setup, he was putting a lot of thought into trying to make the night memorable. The sound of the end-of-class bell brought him back to reality, quickly packed up and he made his way to his bike. Nothing had made him this happy in a long time, he was not going to ruin it! Rex peddled quickly as he made his journey home, wanting to give himself as much time as possible to be prepared. Galloping into the house after dropping his bike off he was that preoccupied he nearly ran into Iris. "What has you in such a hurry!!??" She cried out just being able to jump to the side in time. "I'm going to need your help gran, I have a visitor coming for dinner tonight!!" He chirped. Must be an important person Iris thought, "Who is this visitor?" Blushing a little, he said sheepishly, "It's a girl from school." "My mym is that so?" Iris grinned, "What do yo
"You took the only person I ever cared about!!" Vanessa and Rex both roared, surprisingly at the exact same time. “Only you were supposed to die tonight!” Cried Vanessa, “All of this is because of you!” She started moving towards Rex, only one thing in her mind, revenge! “Why were you trying to kill me? I have done nothing to either of you! I didn’t even know you until recently!” Rex yelled seeing Vanessa moving on him with her dagger at the ready. “Your family ruined us!” She said, she was only a few feet away now, still grim determination for the kill written all over her face. “If you want a fight, here I am!” Rex said. He just realised in the heat of the moment, he had no weapon to help him. So he did the only thing he could of, raise both hands up, fists clenched at Vanessa. “Are you that cocky you think you can take me without a weapon!!?” Vanessa sneered, “Very well!” Adjusting her grip for a stab, Vanessa thrust the dagger towards Rex’s stomach. She was trying to inflic
"Ok you two that's quite enough," Markus said as he came through the portal a few minutes after Rex. "You'll be fine, just breathe." Putting a hand on Rex's shoulder. "Just a little fun Lord Markus, meant no harm by it" said one of the men, Rex looked up after his eyes had adjusted a little better and the nausea was waning, that's weird, did I just hear them call Markus 'Lord'?, that's curious Rex thought, he then noticed that standing not far away from Rex was 2 men who were eyeing Rex off eagerly. On closer inspection those 2 men looked exactly alike! Both men looked to be about 5 and a half foot tall, both had long hair tied back into a pony tail, except one had black hair at the base which greyed at the tips, while the other had brown which also greyed at the tips, they also shared the same eye colour, both men seem to have orange pupils. "Yes prince Rex, we are twins, except I'm the good looking one" chuckled one of the men after seeing the look on Rex's face as he gazed from o
"Welcome home Prince Rex." The moment Rex stepped through the portal he saw the most wonderful thing he had ever seen in his life. In front of him was long sweeping plains full of green grass, in the far distance was a snow capped mountain range, birds flying overhead singing, everything seemed a little too perfect, picking up a flower he saw on the edge of the path, he looked at it, looked real, smelt it, it smelt real, how could magic have made something like this? This place was something special! No wonder so much effort was taken into protecting it. Then his mind drifted off to imagining how other parts of Dracoterrum looked, hmm, stomach growled, hey I don't feel sick after that portal jump... Not feeling nauseous at all seemed a little odd for Rex, "how come that portal was instant, but yours before felt like a crazy roller coaster ride that made me feel like throwing up 2 years worth of stomach contents?" Markus just chuckled before saying, "it is the same for all magic, th
The noise was so loud it was not surprising that the twins and Markus both jumped up out of their bedrolls. The twins went into their rucksacks, both pulling out short swords and stood next to each other at the ready. Markus reached into his bag and when he brought his hand out, he was only holding onto a pommel, but no blade! 'That won't be much use in a fight without a blade' Rex thought to himself. With a quick flick of his wrist, Markus's sword came alive and out of the pommel came a silver liquid that quickly turned solid, forming the blade. 'Ok, now that was impressive' Rex thought. Reaching into his bag, Rex felt around, besides clothes and spare shoes, he had nothing to fight with! With the looks on the other people's faces, it looked like he was going to need something! "I don't have a weapon!" He called to Markus. "You're a Magnus, you don't need one!" He called back, "inside of you is power most people can only dream of having, that is more useful than any weapon I c
As the group was getting closer to the mountain ranges, Rex decided to ask about the place and the people who lived there. “Those are the Ragnar Mountain ranges, the people who live there are called the Bohl, they are a race of hybrid human and ogre, the ancestral caretakers of the dragon called Ragnar,” Markus replied. “I once saw one of them open a door for Iris, I only saw his hand, and even that was enormous!” Rex said. “It is uncommon for any Bohl to be under 6 foot tall, if I’m not mistaken, they are born at 2-3 feet tall, not a small feat, you will see when you meet another of your father's generals at the capital. No doubt you will be invited to one of their massive feasts.” Markus said. As the sun started to set on day 2 of traveling, they came up onto the edge of a lake that stretched all the way to the mountain base. Rex strained his eyes and swore he could see a house on the other side below the mountain. “That’s where we are headed.” Chirped Raz seeing Rex looking
Seeing Nessa’s face as Rex approached her showing off the part of Fafnir he was able to conjure gave him a sense of power for the first time in his life. After so many years of torment, this seemed like a good change, after all he was a Prince! “You seem to have lost all sense of yourself there, do you yield?” Rex said. “You only got me for a second!” Nessa yelled jumping back to her feet. She definitely had no idea how she was going to combat this new threat, and to her it looked strangely similar to pictures of dragon’s feet she had seen. But morphing into a dragon was impossible! Or so she had been told. “Yield or regret it” Rex said, he was trying his hardest to prevent fighting her and had hoped the scare tactic would enough to stop her. Seeing as she had jumped up and seemed to regain her composure made him sigh a little. He did not want to be enemies with her. Seeing the look of conflict on Rex’s face Nessa decided that was the time to strike! Closing the gap between them qu
Stepping inside, Rex took a breath. This isn’t creepy at all he thought to himself. A door that opens by itself with someone inside who has been waiting for me. As Rex made it to what must have been the entertaining area, he noticed there was 2 people sitting on the couch in front of the fire. Hearing the footsteps from behind them approaching, the two people turned around to face him. Walking towards the couch the voice he heard from the door called out once more, “take a seat and I will be with you shortly.” Taking the advice from the strange creepy voice, Rex walked around the couch and sat down on the end. Sitting next to him was a gigantic man, almost as large as the one he had seen while still in Oak, when his grandmother had someone open the door for her. I’m sure Markus said this person was supposed to be my ages, he is huge! Rex thought to himself when he saw his size. Shortly after Rex sat down, the man stood up, bowed at the neck and said to him while putting his h
As the enemy soldiers charged, they quickly spread out evenly across each squad commanded by Rector’s defence, ‘They are testing our weak spots” Rex heard Rector say to Markus, who nodded in agreement as the small number of soldiers were killed quickly by Rex’s and Ley’s squads, Markus’s and Gwayne’s a few moments later, the barrage of fireballs from the walls reached the enemies’ position almost simultaneously, hitting the barrier created by their warlocks, most being stopped, the more powerful fireballs made it through and scorched the soldiers they hit, dying a few seconds after impact. “Are you going to try a counterattack?” Markus asked quietly, leaning over to Rector. “Not directly, no” he replied, stroking his beard, the enemy had not made a move since their test of his defensive line and it worried him, “Something is going to happen, I can feel it.” “What are you thinking?” Markus said, “I think they are scheming since their test proved our defences are solid.” “No defence
Everyone got dressed in silence, they were all thinking about what was coming their way with the battle. After a half-hour, everyone was suited up and ready to go, they all headed out of the room, down the stairs and out through the gate, stopping outside. Saying their goodbyes to Marcia, she hugged everyone before calling out and departing on Ulna. “Time to go and see your troops I guess” Lacey shrugged with a sigh, the closer it got to the battle, the more she started to worry. “That would be wise, seeing as they are formed up and waiting for you by the gate,” Ley said with a smile. As they all made their way to the southern gate, the entire group was silent, they were all apprehensive about how close to battle they all were, Ley seemed to notice this, “I think if anyone will survive this, it will be you all, I sense something different, something strong has formed between you, use that and you will be a force to be reckoned with, that rumoured scorpion pet of yours would be of
The sun was an hour from even touching the horizon, Rex was laying in the middle of Minet, Marcia and Lacey, all sleeping soundly, Rex snoring quietly, “Rex, wake up please, but do not wake the others, I must show you something.’ Even while inside of his dream, he knew the voice belonged to Rector, his father, it was loud enough to wake him, but not too loud to startle him, as his eyes blinked and focused, he saw Rector sitting in a chair watching and smiling, looking at the women, they were all dressed, which he did not remember them doing. ‘I would not intrude on a view that is not for me, I made sure clothes found them before I came in’ Rector said with a wink. Carefully moving Marcia’s hand off his chest, he slowly sat up, standing at the same speed, stepping over the women carefully, not wanting to wake them, ‘Is everything ok?’ Rex asked. ‘Let us go, then we can speak more freely’ Rector said, holding his hand out to Rex, who took it. Once his vision cleared Rex was in a dar
“Did you end up killing it? Surely not even you could kill something THAT big” Lacey added in. “Hang on…so you like for real saw and fought a tentaculum? A fabled flesh-eating tentacled monster from the books of legend?” Marcia asked, still visibly skeptical. “No word of a lie,” Minet said, “Rex and Raz stayed behind to let us escape, next we saw them, Rex was covered in shit and Raz’s head was split open.” “Well yes, I didn’t end up killing it, but we injured it enough it must have thought us too painful to continue fighting, it ended up losing 3 tentacles and 1 eye, Raz was hurt after it ejected some black shit that shot us into the trees, Raz hit some rocks, I patched him up best I could and carried him to the shack,” Rex said, recounting the events, leaving out some in-depth gruesome parts he wished he could forget, “So why was that muscle-bound axe man chasing you into the shack?” “Wow this is so much drama in a short time, how you even got anything done, I’ll never know,” Mar
“Well, my place is the closest to everywhere we need to be tomorrow and is away from prying eyes, and I have half a bottle of yarak spirits, we can share that, you can tell me all about your trip in a shortened version and we can have some fun, get a little sleep and then head out to our posts in the morning,” Marcia said with a smile. “I’m sold,” Marcia said, clapping her hands together. “I just had a thought” Lacey started to say. “Yes or no?” Minet interjected. “Yes, sounds good” Lacey nodded, walking with the women, “We weren’t told who we are serving with tomorrow.” “I don’t know about you, but I’m sticking with Rex” Minet shrugged. “That was what I was hoping to do, what do you think? Where is Rex?” Lacey asked, looking around for him. “Odd he would sneak out on us, this was supposed to be our night together” Minet scowled, putting her hands on her hips. “Sorry, I’m here, was just trying out a bit of magic I was shown earlier, good to know it still works, it gave me an id
Rex, Minet, and Lacey followed Rector into the palace, turning away from the throne room and traveling down a hallway Rex had never been before, “I don’t remember seeing this here” he stated, looking back, then back toward a large wooden door at the end. “That is because I do not allow this area to be accessed unless necessary, the war room has not been used since the Blood War, it saddens me to even have to use it again,” Rector sighed, walking toward the door, it opening as he approached. As they all entered the room, there was already a handful of older men present in the room who were pointing to places on a table that was in the center of the room, it showed the walls of the city and the fields beyond, many black figures stood in the southern fields showing the invading troops and their positioning, the old men were all yelling at each other for what plan they thought would be best, Marcia, Ley, and Markus were all at one end, Marcia was scowling at the men yelling, Ley was smil
“So whoever has brought this army has one hell of a grudge against Dracones, or father” Rex guessed, seeing how much dust over such a large area was being kicked up, “What was the scout's estimate?” “In excess of 30 thousand strong” Marcia replied, “That’s three times as many as Ean’s last army.” “Holy shit, how many defend Hale?” Rex asked. “About 10 thousand,” Marcia said, doing some quick math in her head, “Would be 18 thousand if we could rely on general Chris’s forces, but word is, he is currently under assault as well, it is almost like this attack has been co-ordinated from both sides of the realm at the same time.” “Three to one odds, battles have been won with a lot worse before” Rex replied. “Yes, but human battles did not have magic and monsters in their ranks either,” Raz said with a grin. “Holy shit!” Looking over to Lizz, who had cursed, which was rare for her, she was now pointing out toward the field outside of Dracone’s southern gate, to where a massive force, a
“So, you’re saying we can be released from the deal to suicide, to serve under you instead?” one of the soldiers asked. “Correct” Rex replied, “Instead of your life being a waste, why not use it for something better?” “We cannot accept that” the soldier replied, saddened, “When we swore our oath to serve, we were branded, if we break our deal, the brand kills us, so either way, we are doomed.” “Who would make you do such a thing?” Lacey asked, she was not the only one who was shocked, the entire group was as well. “Our new leader ensured our allegiance with spells” the soldier replied, lining up his sword, ready to pierce the heart, the rest of the group following suit, “We thank you for the offer, you are not like they say you are,” he took one last deep breath to ready himself, closed his eyes and slid the sword into his chest with a groan, after a few gasps he fell lifeless to the ground, followed shortly after by the remainder of the soldiers. “I did not think they would have
The sound of screams and metal hitting metal echoed out soon after the soldiers reached Rex and his companion’s position as they cut through their first wave. Lacey and Minet had teamed up on Rex’s right side and were diving, dashing, stabbing and blocking each other’s weak spots, many dead and dying fae laying around them. Raz and Lizz were on the left front, Lizz was throwing fireballs at their enemies furiously, scorching two, sometimes three at a time, Raz was standing fast between her and the front line, cutting down any that made it through to ensure Lizz could focus on what she was doing. “Looks like we underestimated a group of children,” Douve said with a sigh and smile, “Looks like it is up to us to settle this.” “Seems like it” Rex replied with a shrug, he was a little curious, everyone knew the royal family had power stemming from dragons, yet Douve did not seem phased. Bowing to Rex, Douve took a ready stance, so out of courtesy, Rex nodded his head, not a second afte
