“You’re f**king kidding. Tell me you’re joking,” Lacey said, her face contorted with a frown.
“If Rex says he is charging the necromancers with Sküülen, I’m inclined to believe him,” Markus said with a smile and one raised eyebrow, Ley looking through the scores of soldiers and beasts they would have to make it through to get there.
“That has to be a stupider idea than staying to fight that tentaculum with Raz,” Minet sighed, shaking her head, Ley and Markus both looked at each other quickly with quizzical looks, Ley turning back to the battlefield.
“My guess is at least 400 with a distance of 1000 paces,” Ley said suddenly, everyone turning to look at him, “not the best odds, but doable.”
Looking at where he was, Rex knew he was talking about his estimate of how many stood between them and the necromancers, “That’s a lot,” he said with a heavy sigh.
“Then you have blackguards to contend with before reaching the necromancers,” he added in, pointing to a line of soldiers that were watching the battle intently, every one of them had matte black armour, a sword on their hip and a medium-sized shield with a white rams skull emblem in the middle of it, they were occasionally throwing up a shield to block an arrow or fireball directed to their charge, “They are the elite of the fae, magic using soldiers, skilled in combat with either.”
‘Maybe this isn’t the best idea after all,’ Rex thought to himself, the odds of failure were growing with each new piece of news, he knew the only reason Telagus was getting the upper hand was because of his seemingly inexhaustible supply of soldiers, and the necromancers had an endless supply of corpses to use to bolster Telagus.
‘A bad plan can still bear fruit, improvise, adapt and you can overcome any obstacles,’ Fafnir said.
Scoffing loudly, Rex looked up at the group, “it’s the best we have, they need to be stopped and any other attempt seems to be failing, Sküülen, I saw that blink thing you were doing before, can you do it with two people?”
“In theory sweetness, it is possible, has it been tried? Yes, only one time, I open a short tear in the veil between this world and the beyond and leap through, I miscalculated on that occasion and only half of my master came through the other side, I was sorely disappointed, he was most handsome,” Sküülen said, he eyes fading out of focus like she was remembering it.
“That’s gross and magnificent magic at the same time,” Lizz said with a shudder.
“Hardly gross, but back to the topic at hand, my range will be greatly shortened, and the effort will no doubt leave me weakened for a short time afterward, my advice, use it sparingly, very sparingly,” Sküülen said.
“If you’re thinking of blinking through the blackguard soldiers, I would advise against it, I do not see the rest of their battalion, which tells me they may be behind the shield, encircling you once inside,” Ley said, straining his eyes while looking at the group of necromancers, who had now just created a new group of undead to re-join the battle.
‘There goes that idea,’ Rex sighed, quickly jumping at a sharp pain on the back of his hand, Minet, Lacey and Lizz also jolting sharply at the suddenness of it, ‘What in the world was that about?’ Rex asked himself turning his hand over to look, his eyes widening, since bonding with Chook, the skylark he had saved and named him promptly after Kealy asked about the ‘overgrown chicken’ he had in his room that time, he had sported a very faint symbol in the middle of the back of his hand, four thick bands only measuring half an inch long each in the direction of his thumb to the edge of his palm, but now it had changed, it now had three more running the opposite direction from fingers to wrist, a little thinner than his own ‘What is this?’
Not mere seconds later, a mixture of happiness, joy, sadness and loss all mixed together slammed into the group, causing them all to look for the source, Rex knew it could only be one person, he looked over to Marcia, who was now standing and hugging Chook. He could see tears streaming down her face, ‘What is going on over there and why has my bonding symbol changed?” the thought he had was answered shortly after, as Marcia removed her skylark saddle from Ulna, to what Rex could tell, said a prayer for skylark, placing it onto Chook’s back, after a few quick adjustments for the difference in size of birds, looked over the Rex, even with her dirty face that had streaks from the tears that had fallen down her cheeks, she was smiling, seemingly happy once more, looking down at his hand, a thought creeped into his mind, ‘Had she also somehow bonded with Chook as well?’ he remembered a few of Marcia’s lessons on skylarks, most important being a skylark cannot be ridden by anyone except its bonded, it would simply ignore any and all orders given to it and buck off the rider when they attempted to mount, but in this case, Chook looked almost happy when Marcia put her foot into one bridle, easily throwing her other leg over the saddle and into the other bridle, and after inhaling a large breath, whistled, causing Chook to obey instantly, crouching before extending and flapping his large wings, lifting only a few feet off the ground before diving toward Rex, landing softly while hopping forward a few steps to get closer, craning its head over when close to Rex, chirping softly in greeting as it always did.
“Did you…” Rex started to say, being stopped suddenly mid-sentence by Marcia leaping from the saddle, crashing hard into him, wrapping her hands around his upper body as she landed on him, the force from the impact causing him to fall onto his back.
“It’s unbelievable,” Marcia whispered between short sobs, “utterly unf**kingbelievable for a skylark to bond with two people simultaneously, you truly are someone special.”
“I didn’t do anything though,” Rex said, half chuckling, he was laying flat on his back with Marcia on top of him, with the entire group now watching wide-eyed at what had just happened.
“No time for playfulness my sweet,” Sküülen said, breaking the silence, “We have some stupidity to attend to first.”
Standing up after noticing everyone now looking at her, mainly Markus, who had a smile from ear to ear, and Ley, who looked like his jaw was about to keep opening until it reached the ground, brushing the dirt from her already blood-stained and dirty armour, she looked at them with her usual hard, sharp expression returning, “Oh shut up, what is she talking about with stupidity to attend to Rex?” she asked looking up and him.
“Rex the idiot plans to try and assault the necromancers with her help to stop the constant flow of undead,” Lacey said, using her thumb to point toward the area where the necromancers were.
“Hmpf, like f**k you are, you’ll die for sure, even with her help, what can we do to help?” Marcia said, defiantly crossing her arms over her chest, just under where her breasts were.
Groaning loudly before speaking, “How about you help win this thing?” Rex replied with a cheeky smile.
“I may have an idea,” Ley said, everyone turning to face him while he stood there silently.
After a tense few seconds, Marcia cleared her throat, looking skyward, “Yep, not like we are losing daylight or anything while you sleep standing up.”
“Oh sorry,” Ley replied with a smile, “Was lost in thought for a moment.”
“No shit.”
“Thank you Marcia my dear, now, as I was saying earlier, I could take a squad of Rex’s royal guard and batter through that line there that is failing, giving him enough space with barely any resistance to push through onto the line of trolls back there that are regrouping, Marcia with her sky army can assault them keeping them busy enough they should almost be invisible, troll eyesight is terrible at the best of times and quite tunnel-visioned, should be pretty close to a straight through to the blackguards, where Rex and his friend can work their magic,” Ley said, using his flattened hand sideways to point at places on the battlefield while speaking.
Rex had to admit, it sounded like a good plan indeed, with their help it would conserve a lot of Rex and Sküülen’s time and energy, but one thing struck him, “If you push far enough in, that might leave you open to a Rufus pincer move, cutting you off from everyone else.” At the mention of the battlefield manoeuvre, Marcia, Ley and Markus all raised their eyebrows at him, “Yeah, I know shit, sometimes,” he smiled.
“Leave that to us,” Markus reassured him, giving him a quick pat on the shoulder, “it will not take long to make the necessary preparations, so if you have a few words to say, now is the time.”
With everyone looking at him, Rex froze up a little, he had never had to give words of encouragement to people about to risk their lives for him.
‘Choose your words carefully young one, words can build, and destroy,’ Fafnir said.
“In preparing for a fight with doomed odds, I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable,” Rex said after taking a deep breath in, getting smiles from the entire group, Ley and Markus both nodding slowly at the same time.
‘Well said young one.’
Seeing the look on everyone’s faces after his words inspired Rex, ‘Maybe it’ll go all as planned,’ he thought to himself, feeling a little glimmer of hope, mixed in with the sudden drain of slight weariness and ‘Hungry? I’m about to go and do something quite stupid, and I’m feeling hungry?’ he asked himself, a little confused, realising he had skipped breakfast and it was nearing noon now.The look of confusion on Rex’s face drew Markus’s attention, “I was wondering when you would want to eat something, a strong body requires fuel, never forget to eat, drink water and breathe, you cannot fight for long without them,” he smiled, reaching into his pocket, producing a small pouch, once it was opened, Rex’s nose filled with the smell of something delightful.“You had jerky this whole time?” Rex asked in an exaggerated tone, taking the few pieces Markus offered gladly, placing a whole piece in his mouth, chewing happily and groaning at the amazing flavour bursting in his mouth, “My god thi
‘Ever heard of the saying, don’t give me more problems without possible solutions?’ Rex asked with a sigh, seeing the troll leading the chase come to a sudden halt next to the corpse of the one he had just killed. Grunting and roaring at the group when it seemed to recognise who had just died at his hand, whatever it said seemed to incite bloodlust, he could tell when the lead troll looked back at him, as did the rest of the group, the sheer rage in their eyes spoke volumes, ‘oh shit.’ ‘Solution could be…run?’ Fafnir added in with a low roar. “Sküülen, we gotta go,” Rex shouted, just as she giggled after slashing the throat of another troll, her kill count being three already. “Please sweetness, they taste foul,” she replied with a curt nod, wrinkling her nose in disgust after licking her gauntlet. ‘Tastes foul? Is she eating something on them?’ Rex asked himself, eyes widening a bit, his thoughts being brought back as the ground shook under the weight of the trolls behind him cha
‘Surely something that huge should take ages to reach us, why is she worried?’ Rex thought to himself, then it dawned on him, despite the immense size, it moved surprisingly quickly and easily in this place, shocking him.“This will be close, if it reaches us, even I am doomed, the all-consumers devour everything, I think it’s drawn by your brightness and power in this place,” Sküülen said looking toward the worm beast, before turning back and driving them even harder toward their exit, once the clawed beast that held onto Rex’s arm saw what was headed their way, it took one last gulp of Rex’s blood before letting go, even it seemed worried about was drawn to them.As the ache of holding his breath for so long started to draw on stomach convulsions, Rex closed his eyes, hoping it would be all over soon, holding onto the last little bit of air that remained in his lungs, ‘why is this taking so f**king long? It wa
‘More like smart not bold, I don’t have time to kill them all before something or someone ruins my plans, so while I still have a semblance of the upper hand, I’m trying it this way,’ Rex said to Fafnir, looking back at each soldier before sighing, “Very well, Sküülen?”“Gladly sweetness,” Sküülen chirped happily, a greedy smile appearing on her face as she leapt forward from the sword where she was hiding, opening her jaws, sinking her sharp teeth deeply into the closest blackguard soldier’s neck, as she pulled back she tore the man’s neck open, the blood gushed out in a splash causing all the soldiers close to him to yelp and gasp at her appearing seemingly out of nowhere, then seeing her licking the blood from her fingers and lips, the soldier now laying dead at their feet with a large piece of his neck missing.‘So much for the elite,’ Rex smiled to himself watching the fear in their eyes, as Sküülen now paced a few steps eyeing them hungrily.‘The fae believes deeply in not offen
“So with their retreat called, it is time to show what type of leader you are,” Markus said after a loud horn blast sounded and the front ranks of Telagus’s army all stepped back a few steps, dropping their weapons and raising both hands in defeat, “Will you allow them the decency of defeat, take prisoners to learn something or cut them down in anger?”“Certainly not the last one, I’m not a monster,” Rex said with a scowl, not believing Markus would even think that an option, “I’m all ears for if any of you have any good paths to take. I don’t know anything about prisoners of war and information gathering.”“If I may,” Markus said, “We could take a few, learn what we can, and set them free. It's not like they would be letting any new information out.”“Breaking someone’s will enough to let us learn what we want would make the person dangerous,” Ley said with a scowl, “If we do that, it is a mercy to end their suffering.”“Last time someone tried to defect from Telagus’s side, they die
“Ok, so the beetle lays eggs, we will have to deal with a lot more of these things kicking around when they hatch and grow up?” Rex asked, watching Rowina slice carefully and slowly into the abdomen, muttering things to herself he barely understood.“Shit!” she exclaimed suddenly as she carefully opened a small pouch on the inside of the beetle, alarming everyone, Rex included, “Of course it has.”“What’s the issue?” Rex asked, leaning forward to see what she was cursing at, “Wow, stinks worse than I remember.”“There are five eggs inside of the beast, three are damaged and embryo dead, and two remain and seem to be intact, give me a vial Leonis, now you have contaminated it with your bare hands get me another clean one you imbecile. Thank you, I have asked you here because I have a proposition to offer you young prince,” Rowina said, scowling as Leonis passed her a new clean vial from a leather pouch on his belt using a small set of tongs.“I’m all ears.”“I will take this healthy eg
“AAHH!” Rex exclaimed as he awoke once more with a start, “I am getting really tired of blacking out, can someone PLEASE tell me what the f**k happened?” “Well, you kind of blacked out after an assassin attack,” Lacey said with a shrug, “Master Percus isn’t sure why, he checked all of your meridians, he said they all checked out to be fine.” “I have no idea what happened my prince,” Master Percus sighed, his disdain seeping through his words, “Some sort of demon kin you have as a partner to you prevented the dagger penetrating any deeper than an inch, even then should have not rendered you unconscious.” “Any idea what the dagger was, or the history of the thing?” Rex asked standing and stretching his limbs, he felt no pain, and did not have any visions or visits from beings as he usually did with his blackouts, so even he was at a loss. “I have asked Rowina, she has said nothing strikes her as abnormal,” Lizz said, shrugging her shoulders. “So I mysteriously just passed out for no
“How do you feel this morning my prince?”“Kealy, haven’t seen you in a while,” Rex said with a smile, seeing the neat pile of clothing set next to his bed. After a few sighs and groans as he stretched, he disrobed, picked up his new clothes and dressed again, stopping at a little coughing sound.“You should have said something so I could turn away. I confess I may have peeked a look while you changed,” Kealy said the edges of her mouth curled into a smile she was trying to hide.“I think we are past the point of embarrassment by now,” Rex shrugged, he wasn’t sure why she was saying something now, Kealy had watched him, even helping him bathe and dress sometimes.“Your harem left in the early hours, none said where they were going for me to pass it onto you, I presume you wanted breakfast? The kitchen has only just started up so it might be a little while before food is served,” Kealy said, grabbing his old clothes and throwing them into a basket, Rex could tell something was off with
Darkness. Then, gradually, sensation. Warmth against his skin. Softness beneath his body. The scent of healing herbs and clean linen. Distant voices, familiar yet indistinct, rising and falling like waves against a shore.Rex floated in this half-conscious state, unwilling or unable to fully awaken. Time meant nothing here—it might have been hours or days since the battle. The only constant was the profound emptiness within him, a void of its own where Fafnir's presence should have been.Occasionally, the voices would draw nearer, accompanied by cool hands on his forehead or wrist. Words filtered through his haze—"stable," "healing," "waiting." But none penetrated deeply enough to rouse him from his twilight state. Then, a new voice—commanding, insistent, refusing to be ignored."Enough of this, Rex. Wake up."Marcia. Her tone brooked no argument, as if his continued unconsciousness were a form of insubordination she wouldn't tolerate.Rex felt his awareness slowly centring, the dista
The world seemed to slow around Rex as he absorbed the crazak queen's words. The godking continued his transformation at the center of the ritual circle, void energy crackling around him like black lightning. The tear in reality pulsed ominously overhead, its edges fraying as the ritual's purpose shifted from convergence to pure destruction."The dragon bond must become a conduit," Queen Ullysarius explained, her multifaceted eyes reflecting the chaos surrounding them. "You must channel the void energy through yourself and into your bracelet, where your dragon can contain and neutralize it.""But the strain could kill him," Kiri protested, her ancient eyes wide with concern."Yes," the crazak queen acknowledged without hesitation. "It likely will."Rex felt Fafnir's consciousness surge forward within the bond, the dragon's presence filling his mind with fierce determination.'Together,' Fafnir's voice resonated within him. 'As it has always been.'The memory of Dilo's sacrifice flashe
Rex ascended the ladder first, his muscles burning with the effort after the drain of reshaping stone. As he neared the top, he slowed, listening for any signs of enemy forces above. The rungs ended at a circular metal hatch partially concealed by overgrowth. With utmost care, he pushed against it, feeling resistance from years of disuse before it finally gave way with a soft groan. The predawn air hit his face, carrying the acrid scent of void energy and smoke. Rex lifted himself enough to peer over the edge, finding they had emerged precisely where Kiri had predicted—at the eastern fringe of the godking's encampment. The massive tear in reality dominated the sky, now at least twice the size it had been when they'd descended beneath the Citadel. Beneath it, a circle of dark-robed figures surrounded an intricate pattern of runes carved into the earth, each glowing with sickly purple energy. And at its centre stood the godking.Even from this distance, Rex could sense his power—a disto
The first sensation that struck Rex as he emerged onto the Citadel's highest tower was the cold—a biting, unnatural chill that cut through clothing and flesh alike. The second was the silence. Despite the thousands of defenders manning the walls and the enemy forces arrayed across the plains, an eerie quiet had fallen over everything, as if the world held its breath. Then he saw why.The night sky had split open.A massive tear hung above the godking's encampment, a wound in reality that oozed darkness and malevolent energy. Around its edges, the stars themselves seemed to bend and distort, drawn toward the void like moths to flame. At its centre, where the ritual circle must be, pulsed a core of such profound darkness that it seemed to devour light itself."What have they done?" Cassius whispered, his usual composure cracking by the sight.General Christopher turned from his position at the parapet, his face illuminated by the sickly purple glow emanating from the rift. "It began mom
The Citadel hummed with preparations as darkness fell. Soldiers sharpened blades, mages prepared defensive wards, and healers laid out supplies for the inevitable casualties. Rex stood at the highest observation point, watching as torches flickered to life across the godking's encampment, stretching like a sea of malevolent stars across the plains."They're positioning siege engines of inhuman proportions," Cassius observed, studying the movements through a spyglass. "But there's something else happening in the center of their camp—some kind of ritual circle."Rex felt the golden bracelet warm against his skin, Fafnir's consciousness pressing forward with concern. "He's not waiting until dawn," Rex said, the certainty growing within him. "The deadline was a misdirection. He's preparing something now.""I've sensed it too," Kiri confirmed, joining them at the parapet. "The void energy is building. Whatever he's planning, it's substantial."The Lady of Blades approached, her expression
The interior of the pavilion defied physical logic. What appeared modest from outside expanded within to a vast chamber, its boundaries lost in shadows that moved with unsettling purpose. No support poles held up the ceiling—instead, the black fabric seemed suspended by an invisible force, rippling occasionally like the surface of dark water. At the centre stood a circular table of obsidian, its surface so polished it reflected their faces with perfect clarity. Seven chairs surrounded it—four on one side, three on the other. The godking had already claimed the central seat on the far side, Chancellor Hellden taking position to his right. The third chair remained empty."Please," the godking said, gesturing to the empty seats. "Make yourselves comfortable."Rex approached cautiously, noting that the floor beneath his feet seemed to shift subtly with each step, as if he walked on something alive rather than solid ground. He chose the chair directly opposite the godking, Marcia and Kiri
Dawn broke over the imperial city with an unnatural clarity, as if the very air had been purified in anticipation of what was to come. Rex stood at the window of his chamber, watching as the first rays of sunlight touched the distant encampment of the godking's forces. The golden bracelet on his wrist pulsed with a steady rhythm, almost like a heartbeat.'He will try to tempt you,' Fafnir's voice whispered in his mind. 'Demons of his kind are masters of deception and desire.'"I know," Rex replied softly. "But I've made my choice."After careful deliberation the previous night, he had selected his three companions for the meeting with the godking. Marcia, with her tactical mind and unwavering resolve; Kiri, whose knowledge might prove crucial against a being as old as the godking; and Dilo, her void-corrupted arm possibly giving her insight into the godking's powers that others lacked. The decision had not been easy. Lacey had argued fiercely for inclusion, citing her combat knowledge
The Citadel's council chamber buzzed with tension as Rex's old companions from Dracoterrum faced his new allies from this realm. What should have been a joyful reunion had quickly transformed into an atmosphere thick with unspoken rivalries and territorial instincts."So let me get this straight," Minet said, pacing the stone floor with her arms crossed. "While we've been desperately searching for you across realms, you've been here making new... connections." Her eyes flickered briefly toward Dilo and Kiri."It wasn't exactly by choice," Rex replied, his voice strained. "I was pulled here against my will, had to survive, and found people I could trust."Lacey, who had remained unusually quiet since their arrival, finally spoke. "We understand that, Rex. But do you understand what we went through to find you? The risks we took? Rowina might be trapped between realms right now because of it."From across the room, Dilo growled low in her throat. "He wasn't
The delegation from the godking's encampment advanced at a deliberate pace across the battle-scarred plains, their progress marked by the fluttering of the white parley flag. At its center rode the imposing figure in black armor – now clearly visible as a woman with pale, almost translucent skin and silver hair that flowed like liquid metal despite the still air."I don’t recognise the envoy," the Lady of Blades said grimly, lowering the spyglass.Rex studied the approaching emissary with growing unease. He could see the person had the figure of a woman and she was not riding a horse, but a massive wolf whose shoulders stood taller than a mounted knight. Its fur was midnight black, with wisps of shadowy vapor rising from its coat with each powerful stride. Flanking her were not soldiers but beasts – creatures with vaguely humanoid forms but bestial features, as if someone had attempted to mold animals into the shape of men and stopped halfway through
