“You have set me up!!” Telagus roared in a panicked voice.

“I did NO such thing! YOU did this, so now the sacred battle is null and void, Markus, Ley and Marcia, signal the full charge!” Rector roared.

As they nodded their acknowledgement of the order, Telagus yelled at Rex, “Kill them all!!”

Obeying the order, Rex immediately lit his hands on fire and began throwing fireballs into Rector’s charging army, killing scores of soldiers as they charged Telagus’s army, leaving many screaming in pain from burns.

“Son, that is enough!” Rector said loudly, his voice echoing, quickly moving to be in front of Rex.

“He does not listen to you,” Telagus said with an evil smile, “His connection to his mother is strong, stronger than even I predicted.”

“We will see about that, Rex, that is NOT your mother, not your real mother,” Rector pleaded, staring into Rex’s eyes, trying his best to make it through the spell.

Rex stopped throwing his fireballs after hearing his name called, snapping his head to look intensely at Rector, who began to smile, which quickly faded, for Rector knew he had not made it through the spell but had drawn Rex’s attention.

Tilting his head slightly as if to gauge Rector, Rex closed his eyes for a second and as he opened them once more, his eyes seemed to be ablaze, his body following suit shortly after, dashing toward Rector so quickly it shocked everyone within the vicinity, Rector and Telagus included, not even they could move that fast, and as Rex slammed into Rector, an intense gong sound resounded across the field and Rector slid backward 10 feet, his arms crossed out in front of his body.

“Mhurl, I’m going to need your help,” Rector panted, slightly shocked seeing his barrier now missing large pieces after the impact, he knew one more blow would break it entirely and leave him vulnerable.

As Mhurl came into view Rex was already dashing forwards once more, flipping over the dragon’s head while his form was still coming through into their realm, grabbing Mhurl’s horns as he passed over, Rex continued his momentum forward, he sent Mhurl careering into the walls of the city, slamming into the barrier Rector had created to protect the citizens, sending intense shockwaves through the city outskirts.

“Mhurl!” Rector called out, rushing to his side, checking him over and then sending him away once more seeing as he was unable to continue fighting, he was a very calculating man, but seeing how quickly and easily his son had dispatched them both now left him unable to come up with a plan.

With Rex’s help, Telagus’s army now had the upper hand and was beginning to gain ground, with Rector’s army’s numbers now slimming with each passing moment, Rex incapacitated scores of soldiers as he moved toward the city, Telagus’s troops following close behind.

With only 30 feet before the city barrier, a dark shadow loomed over Rex, gaining size and after a gust of wind and a screech, Ulna landed between Rex and the city walls.

“Rex! Stop this,” Marcia pleaded as she slid from her back, putting her hands out in front of her, to show she held no weapon, in hopes he would not attack her, as she spoke it seemed to stop Rex in his tracks and he stared blankly at her as if trying to figure out who she was.

Seeing Rex not continuing to fight, the flames surrounding his body also starting to lower in intensity, Telagus quickly rushed to Rex’s side, leaning over and whispering into his ear with his mother’s voice once more, “She is trying to distract you so their soldiers can kill us, do not let her my son,” glaring at Marcia with a sly smile as he did so.

“Rex, do not listen to her, you know me, you know I don’t want to harm you. I just want you to stop hurting anyone else who doesn’t deserve it,” Marcia said, still holding her hands out in front, walking slowly toward where Rex and Telagus were standing.

“She is nothing compared to your mother, now kill her!” Telagus said, getting louder weaving a little more of his power reserve back into Rex’s curse, he had begun to sense his spell beginning to wane.

‘Marcia, Telagus has used a great deal of power and energy in a short period, he has had to use even more just then, he cannot have much left, plus whatever you’re doing seems to be working, keep it going,’ Rector communicated telepathically to Marcia, watching what was transpiring intently.

With only a few feet now between Rex and Marcia, she stared straight into Rex’s eyes, “Please Rex, please listen to me, let me help you, that is not your mother.”

“Kill her my son,” Telagus repeated once more using Rex’s mother’s voice.

Breaking eye contact with Marcia to look at Telagus, who nodded, he turned back to Marcia, and quick as a flash brought his flaming hand forward, but before he connected it with Marcia, another figure flashed between his fist and Marcia’s body, and as the blow landed, a loud glass shattering noise could be heard, following a crunching noise with two bodies being sent careering backward.

“HAHAHAHAHA!” Telagus cackled as the scene cleared and he saw who Marcia’s saviour was.

“My lord!!” Markus and Ley both called out, seeing what had happened from where they were battling, both rushing over to Rector’s side as he lay strewn out across the ground.

“My emperor, why would you do that?” Marcia gasped, groaning slightly from pain, “It should be me doing that for YOU.”

“This is not Rex’s doing, and right now he needs you more than me, please help him,” Rector replied in a ragged raspy voice.

“We will do our best,” Marcia, Ley and Markus all said in unison, as Rector closed his eyes, quickly checking him over, Markus confirmed he was still alive, his body was badly broken.

As a shadow loomed over the group, they all looked up and saw Rex now standing over them, with both hands open, a large flame now swirling in front of his chest, growing larger with each second.

“You have to be kidding me, is that the meteor strike?” Markus said, his eyes growing wide in fear, he knew if the spell was completed, they would all perish, a little part of him was shocked that Rex could even produce such a spell, knowing of only 3 other beings powerful enough to even attempt it.

“Finish them my son,” Telagus said, watching with glee as Rex was performing magic even he was not able to wield in his time.

Staring at the group blankly for a second longer, Rex worked to finish the spell, and as it neared completion, he raised it above his head, Marcia, Ley and Markus closed their eyes.

“Stop body, stop, no don’t,” Rex called out from his mind space desperately, watching the events unfolding without any power to stop himself.

“I have waited a very long time for this day worm,” Telagus said with a wide smile, drunk in the moment of watching Rector about to perish.

Just as Rex extended his fingers to be able to release the spell, a small form leapt onto his back, breaking his concentration for a moment.

“Finish the spell Rex,” Telagus commanded, not taking his eyes from the group on the ground, and after a few more moments of waiting and not seeing his word followed, he repeated it once more while looking up, “What are you doing? Finish this…AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!”

A black swirl engulfed them both, Telagus could be heard through the fog still screaming loudly in pain, it disappearing after a few seconds, revealing Telagus now kneeling gripping his head with gritted teeth and his eyes closed and Rex was still standing, his hands on his knees to support himself.

“What the…what broke the spell?” Rex stammered, feeling a sudden rush of emotions all at once, ‘Fear, anger, confusion, love? What on earth is going on?’ he asked himself, his mind reeling once it was his own again.

“Rex, kill them!” Telagus screamed in a shrill voice, trying to regain control as his mind felt like it was being ripped in two.

“No,” Rex panted in an irritated tone, he felt like he had run a marathon, and with his entire body now aching and as the fogginess he had in his mind had begun to clear up, he felt a niggling pain from the side of his head, absentmindedly bringing his hand up to rub it to try and make the pain disappear, as he did he felt something odd, and as he felt around it, the shape of the object appeared in his mind, “Why do I have an earring?”

“That was me Rex, I am sorry."

“Lizz, why have you put an earring on me? And why am I back in control of myself again?” Rex asked, eyeing Lizz suspiciously, not seeming to be able to let his hand move from the earring now firmly planted through his left-hand lower ear lobe. “Show an outwards sign of an inwards change,” she replied with a smile, lifting her hand out in front of her to show a note crumpled in her palm. “What are you talking about?” Rex asked, tilting his head with a half-smile, slightly confused. “Whatever she has done will make no difference, I will still end you all!” Telagus interjected, pushing Lizz to the side, as he did Rex could feel pain and anger suddenly rise out of nowhere. ‘What the…it feels like the connection I share with the other girls…speaking of which where are they?’ While Rex seemed distracted by the flood of unfamiliar emotions, Telagus jumped at the opportunity that arose, thrusting his sword forward quickly toward Rex’s chest. Seizing a quick opening, Marcia dropped onto the shell and drove her sword deep into th

After merely a minute, Rex was regretting his decision to continue, the pain was already wreaking havoc on his body, he had heard and felt six ribs snap, and his collarbone and was pretty sure something was wrong with his spine and wouldn’t be surprised the cramping he felt in his abdomen meant internal damage. Ulna had still not moved since they began beside a few twitches, and the few times Rex had had to stop for a few seconds to breathe his way through a new wave of searing pain, Markus had quickly jumped in and checked her vitals, shaking his head each time. “Come on damn you,” Rex cursed after each time no change was found, the only thing that was keeping him going was the wave of hope he had felt through the bond he shared with Marcia, every time Markus checked Ulna’s vitals for any improvement the wave sent reassurance through him and gave him the strength to continue as his body was being broken and bent.Allowing the magic to fill him once mo

Seeing the look on everyone’s faces after his words inspired Rex, ‘Maybe it’ll go all as planned,’ he thought to himself, feeling a little glimmer of hope, mixed in with the sudden drain of slight weariness and ‘Hungry? I’m about to go and do something quite stupid, and I’m feeling hungry?’ he asked himself, a little confused, realising he had skipped breakfast and it was nearing noon now.The look of confusion on Rex’s face drew Markus’s attention, “I was wondering when you would want to eat something, a strong body requires fuel, never forget to eat, drink water and breathe, you cannot fight for long without them,” he smiled, reaching into his pocket, producing a small pouch, once it was opened, Rex’s nose filled with the smell of something delightful.“You had jerky this whole time?” Rex asked in an exaggerated tone, taking the few pieces Markus offered gladly, placing a whole piece in his mouth, chewing happily and groaning at the amazing flavour bursting in his mouth, “My god thi

Darkness. Then, gradually, sensation. Warmth against his skin. Softness beneath his body. The scent of healing herbs and clean linen. Distant voices, familiar yet indistinct, rising and falling like waves against a shore.Rex floated in this half-conscious state, unwilling or unable to fully awaken. Time meant nothing here—it might have been hours or days since the battle. The only constant was the profound emptiness within him, a void of its own where Fafnir's presence should have been.Occasionally, the voices would draw nearer, accompanied by cool hands on his forehead or wrist. Words filtered through his haze—"stable," "healing," "waiting." But none penetrated deeply enough to rouse him from his twilight state. Then, a new voice—commanding, insistent, refusing to be ignored."Enough of this, Rex. Wake up."Marcia. Her tone brooked no argument, as if his continued unconsciousness were a form of insubordination she wouldn't tolerate.Rex felt his awareness slowly centring, the dista

The world seemed to slow around Rex as he absorbed the crazak queen's words. The godking continued his transformation at the center of the ritual circle, void energy crackling around him like black lightning. The tear in reality pulsed ominously overhead, its edges fraying as the ritual's purpose shifted from convergence to pure destruction."The dragon bond must become a conduit," Queen Ullysarius explained, her multifaceted eyes reflecting the chaos surrounding them. "You must channel the void energy through yourself and into your bracelet, where your dragon can contain and neutralize it.""But the strain could kill him," Kiri protested, her ancient eyes wide with concern."Yes," the crazak queen acknowledged without hesitation. "It likely will."Rex felt Fafnir's consciousness surge forward within the bond, the dragon's presence filling his mind with fierce determination.'Together,' Fafnir's voice resonated within him. Rex ascended the ladder first, his muscles burning with the effort after the drain of reshaping stone. As he neared the top, he slowed, listening for any signs of enemy forces above. The rungs ended at a circular metal hatch partially concealed by overgrowth. With utmost care, he pushed against it, feeling resistance from years of disuse before it finally gave way with a soft groan. The predawn air hit his face, carrying the acrid scent of void energy and smoke. Rex lifted himself enough to peer over the edge, finding they had emerged precisely where Kiri had predicted—at the eastern fringe of the godking's encampment. The massive tear in reality dominated the sky, now at least twice the size it had been when they'd descended beneath the Citadel. Beneath it, a circle of dark-robed figures surrounded an intricate pattern of runes carved into the earth, each glowing with sickly purple energy. And at its centre stood the godking.Even from this distance, Rex could sense his power—a disto

The first sensation that struck Rex as he emerged onto the Citadel's highest tower was the cold—a biting, unnatural chill that cut through clothing and flesh alike. The second was the silence. Despite the thousands of defenders manning the walls and the enemy forces arrayed across the plains, an eerie quiet had fallen over everything, as if the world held its breath. Then he saw why.The night sky had split open.A massive tear hung above the godking's encampment, a wound in reality that oozed darkness and malevolent energy. Around its edges, the stars themselves seemed to bend and distort, drawn toward the void like moths to flame. At its centre, where the ritual circle must be, pulsed a core of such profound darkness that it seemed to devour light itself."What have they done?" Cassius whispered, his usual composure cracking by the sight.General Christopher turned from his position at the parapet, his face illuminated by the sickly purple glow emanating from the rift. The Citadel hummed with preparations as darkness fell. Soldiers sharpened blades, mages prepared defensive wards, and healers laid out supplies for the inevitable casualties. Rex stood at the highest observation point, watching as torches flickered to life across the godking's encampment, stretching like a sea of malevolent stars across the plains."They're positioning siege engines of inhuman proportions," Cassius observed, studying the movements through a spyglass. "But there's something else happening in the center of their camp—some kind of ritual circle."Rex felt the golden bracelet warm against his skin, Fafnir's consciousness pressing forward with concern. "He's not waiting until dawn," Rex said, the certainty growing within him. "The deadline was a misdirection. He's preparing something now.""I've sensed it too," Kiri confirmed, joining them at the parapet. "The void energy is building. Whatever he's planning, it's substantial."The Lady of Blades approached, her expression

The interior of the pavilion defied physical logic. What appeared modest from outside expanded within to a vast chamber, its boundaries lost in shadows that moved with unsettling purpose. No support poles held up the ceiling—instead, the black fabric seemed suspended by an invisible force, rippling occasionally like the surface of dark water. At the centre stood a circular table of obsidian, its surface so polished it reflected their faces with perfect clarity. Seven chairs surrounded it—four on one side, three on the other. The godking had already claimed the central seat on the far side, Chancellor Hellden taking position to his right. The third chair remained empty."Please," the godking said, gesturing to the empty seats. "Make yourselves comfortable."Rex approached cautiously, noting that the floor beneath his feet seemed to shift subtly with each step, as if he walked on something alive rather than solid ground. He chose the chair directly opposite the godking, Marcia and Kiri

Dawn broke over the imperial city with an unnatural clarity, as if the very air had been purified in anticipation of what was to come. Rex stood at the window of his chamber, watching as the first rays of sunlight touched the distant encampment of the godking's forces. The golden bracelet on his wrist pulsed with a steady rhythm, almost like a heartbeat.'He will try to tempt you,' Fafnir's voice whispered in his mind. 'Demons of his kind are masters of deception and desire.'"I know," Rex replied softly. "But I've made my choice."After careful deliberation the previous night, he had selected his three companions for the meeting with the godking. Marcia, with her tactical mind and unwavering resolve; Kiri, whose knowledge might prove crucial against a being as old as the godking; and Dilo, her void-corrupted arm possibly giving her insight into the godking's powers that others lacked. The decision had not been easy. Lacey had argued fiercely for inclusion, citing her combat knowledge

The Citadel's council chamber buzzed with tension as Rex's old companions from Dracoterrum faced his new allies from this realm. What should have been a joyful reunion had quickly transformed into an atmosphere thick with unspoken rivalries and territorial instincts."So let me get this straight," Minet said, pacing the stone floor with her arms crossed. "While we've been desperately searching for you across realms, you've been here making new... connections." Her eyes flickered briefly toward Dilo and Kiri."It wasn't exactly by choice," Rex replied, his voice strained. "I was pulled here against my will, had to survive, and found people I could trust."Lacey, who had remained unusually quiet since their arrival, finally spoke. "We understand that, Rex. But do you understand what we went through to find you? The risks we took? Rowina might be trapped between realms right now because of it."From across the room, Dilo growled low in her throat. The delegation from the godking's encampment advanced at a deliberate pace across the battle-scarred plains, their progress marked by the fluttering of the white parley flag. At its center rode the imposing figure in black armor – now clearly visible as a woman with pale, almost translucent skin and silver hair that flowed like liquid metal despite the still air."I don’t recognise the envoy," the Lady of Blades said grimly, lowering the spyglass.Rex studied the approaching emissary with growing unease. He could see the person had the figure of a woman and she was not riding a horse, but a massive wolf whose shoulders stood taller than a mounted knight. Its fur was midnight black, with wisps of shadowy vapor rising from its coat with each powerful stride. Flanking her were not soldiers but beasts – creatures with vaguely humanoid forms but bestial features, as if someone had attempted to mold animals into the shape of men and stopped halfway through
