4. Runaway Princess

I paced back and forth in my room, biting my nails, waiting for my father and brother to return so that I could tell them about my encounter with Nikolai at the college.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake the dangerous obsession I saw in his eyes. It is terrifying me to the core.

The silence in my own home felt suffocating. Each tick of the clock only intensified my anxiety. There was this deep feeling in my stomach that something was about to happen. Something that would change everything.

The soft knock on the door broke the chain of my thoughts.

"Come in," I whispered.

"Princess, the master is calling you to his study," the maid informed me.

"Father’s back?" I asked, surprised.

She nodded.

Without waiting for her to leave, I walked past her, heading straight to my father’s study. I just wanted to hug him, cry in his arms, and tell him how that man tried to scare me.

People call me "Princess," but it’s not just for the title. I am, in every sense, my father and brother’s princess. They’ve always protected and fought for me in the past, and I knew they would do so again if needed.

I didn’t need permission to enter my father’s study. I just pushed the door open, only to be surprised to see my brother, Marco, and my fiancé, Dimitri, already there. The three of them were seated around the large oak desk with grave expressions on their faces. The room fell silent the moment I entered.

"My Princess," my father’s calm yet firm voice broke the stillness. "Come in."

His eyes, usually cold and threatening to the world, were always warm and comforting to me. In his presence, I forgot all my worries.

But this time, his eyes held something else — something that made my stomach tighten: Stress. Tiredness. And… defeat? Something troubled him. My gaze flicked to Marco; he tried to smile at me but I could tell it was forced. Dimitri, too, looked tense, his shoulders stiff.

The tension in the air and seriousness on their faces indicated that obviously something was wrong.

"Sit down, Alessia," Marco said, his voice low but firm.

Slowly, I lowered myself into the chair, my eyes flickering between the three men. I longed to tell them everything about my encounter with Nikolai, but the unease in the room held me back.

I felt a warm, rough palm settle over mine, and though the hand belonged to my fiancé, my first instinct was to pull away.

‘You are in trouble Princess, if you let that bastard touch you.’ Nikolia’s words rang in my head.

Dimitri was chosen for me by my father. He believed Dimitri was the best for me, that he was dependable, strong, and would offer me the security I needed. I was promised to him the day I turned eighteen. But I have never felt at ease around him.

I believe this is due to the age difference between us. I wasn't sure if it was just me, but we seemed to be on opposite sides of the world at times.

"What happened, Dad?" I broke the silence when it became too much for me. "Why are you so stressed?"

"Nikolai is back," Marco answered, his gaze hardening.

My stomach churned, and my heart skipped a beat.

They know. They know Nikolai is back.

"And he’s already making moves against us." Marco looked away, his jaw clenching and fists tightening "He has sabotaged that shipment, which was about to bring us a lot of fortune. He paid off the dock workers to change the cargo manifest and sent our goods elsewhere."

My heart sank and my fists tightened as I could feel the hatred building inside him.

Yes, he is our rival but I didn't think of him steeping so low. There were rules—a code that even he should have respected.

"But more than anything else, right now we are concerned about you." Marco added.

"This could have been avoided if you had married her to me sooner," Dimitri said, his jaw ticking under the tension.

My father's gaze remained fixed on me. I knew what he wanted to say.

All of them wanted me to get married two years ago, but it was my wish to complete my studies first so instead they engaged me.

"The damage has already been done. We need to look forward to what we can do now," my father said in his sharp and crisp voice.

"Alessia, we are sure that in return for that shipment, Nikolai will ask for you."

My body turned stiff. I am not some object that he could have in barter.

"And I will never let him lay a single finger on my princess."

I let out a breath of relief.

"So I, along with Damitri and Marco, have decided something that seems like the best for you."

My heart started drumming in my chest as I waited for Dad to continue. The tension grew heavier as silence stretched between us.

"We have decided to move you to a safer place." Marco finally broke the silence.

"What do you mean?" I asked in complete surprise. My eyebrows knitted together.

Silence.

No one said a single word.

"Dad! I am asking something!" I stood up "What do you mean?"

"Alessia, it's not easy for me as well," he gulped as if swallowing his emotions "You know that you are my heart. I couldn't sleep without seeing your face. I eat only after you have taken the first But..." He looked away. "But now keeping away from all this chaos is the only option to keep you safe from that monster."

My words caught in my throat. I have never seen my dad so helpless. I know how hard he worked for that shipment. But he is ready to let go of everything for me.

"I’ve already arranged for you to stay at an estate in the countryside." Dimitri added, "It’s far from the city, and it’s secure. You’ll stay there until everything is resolved. No one can know your whereabouts. Not even us."

I licked my lips, my throat going dry.

"Marco... I don’t want to be hidden away like some... prisoner."

"Alessia," Marco came to me. "You need to be staying strong. Nikolia is planning to attack us tonight and before that, you would have to leave."

My eyes dilated when the words of Nikolai rang in my head: 'I would take you with me, right in front of your father's eyes.'

They are right. Nikolai is a man of his word. He would surely come to hunt me.

"We’re doing this to protect you, Alessia. Don’t think for a moment it’s easy for us either." Marco placed his hand on my shoulder.

Unable to hold myself, I wrapped my arms around him and started crying. Dad also came to me, stroking my head. Turning around, I hugged him as well.

"When will I see you again?" I asked, swallowing the lump in my throat.

My father's expression hardened. After my mother died, he started loving me more than ever before. I know this decision is the hardest for him but he is not letting it show on his face because he knows that I can't see him in pain.

"I can’t promise when, but I need you to be strong. We’ll be in touch once things are resolved. In the meantime, you stay there, and you keep quiet. Understand?"

I nodded, though my heart felt like it was breaking.

It has been two weeks since I moved here. I have not heard from my father or brother since then.My anxiety is increasing by the day, and loneliness is killing me. I've stopped myself several times from contacting my family. I just want them to ensure my safety as soon as possible so I can return to my normal life. Since this morning, I have been feeling very strange. The anxiety in my stomach is making me feel like vomiting. My heart is restless. I have been trying to keep myself engaged and distracted, but I cannot shake off the feeling that something is about to happen. Something bad.I flinched when my phone suddenly started ringing. I immediately rushed to it, believing that my father must be contacting me and asking me to come back, but instead, I was surprised to find the call from an unknown number. Before coming here, Dad gave me a different contact number. Only Dad, Marco, and Dimitri had that number. Who is calling me other than them? My first thought was to ignore it,

Alessia Rossi The air felt thick and heavy with the scent of expensive cologne when I slowly came back to senses. My body felt heavy as if I had been drugged or given something to knock me out. The back of my head throbbed with pain. My heart was pounding against my ribs. When my eyelids opened, the first thing I saw was the high ceiling. Its golden designs blurred as my mind struggled to wake up. My eyes widened slightly when I realized it was not my room. The creepy familiarity in the air sent chills down my spine. Panic set in, and I immediately sat up, panting heavily. Tears stung my eyes as images of fire that had consumed my world flashed before me. A loud cry escaped my mouth. I tried to run away, but my body felt too heavy to move even an inch. I barely had time to collect myself before I felt a large figure beside me. My head snapped, and my eyes widened in horror. Alessia Rossi I slid kohl into the waterline of my eyes, set it aside, and got up to take a final look in the mirror. The woman staring at me was unlike the one I knew. It appeared pale, with no blush on her cheeks or light in her eyes.A ringing bell disrupted my concentration, and my glance shifted to the watch, indicating it was time. It's time to step out as a bride. Bride of Nikolai De Moretti. My gaze fell on the red rose bouquet that Nikolai had previously sent in the hands of his valet. I crushed the fresh flowers between my palms one at a time before gathering them up. I took a deep breath, clutching the rose bouquet close to my chest, before heading out to face the battle. I've accepted my fate and realized that death is the only way out of the man I'm about to marry. When I first tried to escape him, he killed my mother and now my father, my brother. He killed my entire family. The Rossi Empire, which my father built with so much hard work, is now in ruins, all because

Change is the only constant in this world; everything changes. But I didn't expect my life to change so quickly. It feels like my world has turned upside down. Even after getting engaged to Dimitri, I never imagined I would end up married. Yet here I am, standing in front of the mirror, wearing a black gown, already married to my nightmare—Nikolai De Moretti. During the wedding ceremony, the room was decorated with roses and scented candles. The fragrance that once brought me peace now feels suffocating. I can't shake off the dread that has settled in my chest. For the first time, my reflection frightened me. I've never worn heavy makeup, let alone such dark makeup. I looked like a ghost: haunted, tainted, and frightening. Still, Nikolai showed me around, introducing me to the guests as if I were the most beautiful lady, his trophy wife.I exhaled sharply, shaking my head at my own folly. Stepping forward, I grabbed a wipe from the vanity and removed the makeup until my face was

His hot breath fanned my ear shell as he whispered, “What do we have here, hmm?”Before I knew it, his hand reached in between the valley of my breast and pulled out the knife. "Surprise, surprise" My breath caught in my throat as he twirled the small blade between his fingers, examining it with amusement. It appeared that he was aware that I was hiding it here and had done so on purpose. My pulse quickened as he lifted my chin with the tip of the knife. I met his gaze with equal intensity."Your eyes, Dolcezza, are sharper than this knife, and your smile..." He chuckled. "It is enough to kill me"He tossed the knife away, and it landed on the floor with a sharp click. I gasped. My instinct was to catch it anyway."You do not need this," he added. My cheeks burned with fury and humiliation. "This time you were too predictable," he whispered, lowering his

I gradually woke up to the chirping of the birds and the sharp glare of the sunlight. I opened my eyes slowly and blinked several times to clear my vision. In those moments, I prayed that last night had been a bad dream; that the forced proximity, the suffocating warmth of his embrace, the way his lips claimed mine, and my body's betrayal were all a story created by my mind. But, the scent of his cologne wrapped around me told me otherwise. I tossed my head to the side once my vision cleared, only to find that the bed was empty. Nikolai was gone. A sigh of relief escaped my lips. Sitting up, I rubbed my eyes. I was still in the black gown I had worn last night. It slipped down my shoulders, reminding me of how he had ruined my plan and pulled out the knife as if he already knew what I could do. Although I was relieved that I didn't wake up tangled in his arms—otherwise, he would have left me no opportunity to tease me. But a part of me was furious as well. He could disappear when

The driver kept his eyes on me until I entered the college.I came here seeking an escape, but even during classes, my mind was consumed with thoughts of Nikolai.Everyone knew what had happened to my family, and they sympathized with me. But I didn’t want their sympathy. I was just relieved they didn’t know about my forced marriage to Nikolai, or they’d start fearing me for no reason. If there was one thing Nikolai had done right, it was keeping the wedding private—only a few of his close men, the Mafia council, and the priest had been present. My friends tried to cheer me up, but I couldn't focus on anything. After classes, I went to the library and plugged in my phone to charge. I had been debating whether to call Dimitri, but I wasn’t sure if it was the right decision. He had agreed to marry me because he was going to get a share of my father’s property. But now, with everything gone, I had no idea how he would react.Still, I had to try. Dimitri was powerful, and more importantly,

His eyes were bloodshot when they met mine. His jaw clenched so tightly that I thought he might break his teeth. And for the very first time, I felt relieved to see him here. Slowly his gaze shifted to the three boys, and his fists balled to his sides. He was just restraining himself from snapping their necks right here and now. With his presence, not only did silence spread but also the temperature of the room dropped by several degrees. And in that moment, I knew these boys would wish they had never been born. His eyes darkened even further when they flicked down to their hands—hands that were still all over me. "Ca-Capo?" one of them stammered, cutting through the silence. I could feel the three of them trembling. The college students feared these boys because they belonged to powerful families. I am sure they are well aware of Nikolai. In a blink of an eye, Nikolai closed the distance between us. "Capo, we... You can have her first if you want." Their hands dropped from

My fingers dug into my lap, and I sat frozen in my place as I waited for him to speak. I had been waiting to hear the truth for so long."Yes, this is the truth: because of me, we lost the child." My breath hitched. "But I wasn't directly responsible for it." My eyebrows drew in confusion. Nikolai leaned forward, resting his elbows on the edge of the table. His hands were clasped loosely in front of him. "You may not remember it, but I know your heart has realized how deeply we were in love with each other once." "We were living a happy life together. We created our small little world without caring about others. And then..." He smiled. "We got the greatest news of our lives: that you were pregnant." I blinked, and a gasp escaped my throat as I tried to think about it. My head spun, and frustration grew when I couldn't remember anything. "But our happiness caught an evil eye. He didn't look as youthful and lively as before. His hair was messy, and his beard had grown out; it was heavy and untrimmed. His eyes looked hollow, with dark bags underneath, as if he hadn't slept for nights. His shoulders were hunched, and his body didn’t carry that aura. His eyes softened slightly when he was sure that I was actually standing in front of him. He looked at me as if I were the first light after a long night. Slowly, he stood up, and my feet subconsciously took me to him. For a moment, neither of us spoke. The world around us blurred as we kept looking at each other like we hadn’t seen each other in lifetimes. Then, his lips slowly curved into a faint smile.“I knew you would come,” his voice was low and raspy, missing that roar and firmness. I said nothing because I didn’t know what to say. I have always respected him, but that doesn’t mean he can shout at me. I don’t give this right to anyone. "I don’t believe I’m obligated to answer every question you throw at me, Marco. I’m not accountable to you.” I folded my arms across my chest and looked directly into his eyes. His jaw clenched and fists tightened. It was quite clear he didn’t like what I said, but still he kept his voice neutral, not allowing his feelings to reflect through his tone. My heart stopped for a moment as I listened to that deep, rough voice that somehow managed to make space in my heart. It still made something inside me stir. I wanted to end the call, to prove that he no longer controls me, but the way he said "please" made it impossible for me to do so. My grip on the phone tightened as not a single word came out of my mouth. Silence spread between us. I could hear his ragged breathing and feel his nervousness through the phone. Then, I heard the rustle of wind on the other end, as if he were outside. "How did he get my number?" The question popped into my mind. I mentally slapped myself for being so stupid. How could I forget that he has many sources? "I didn't think you'd pick up," he said softly, breaking the silence. Suddenly, I felt a rush of emotions and was about to end the call when he spoke again. "I won't take much of your time, Alessia." I swallowed hard. First, I can't believe Nikolai has transferred his property into my name without telling me, and now Marco wants me to sign it over to him. Why? I realized my hands were trembling when I felt a large, rough hand cover my palm. It was my father's. He looked at me and nodded reassuringly. He already knew about it, and he also wanted the same from me. How could I not know about my own life and the things happening to me? They gave me a few minutes of silence to understand the entire situation. Then Marco spoke again, "Alessia, I know you are pregnant, and we shouldn't give you too much stress, but this can't wait any longer." He sighed. His tone was very soft, as if he were speaking to a child. "Alessia, before taking you away from us, Nikolai snatched the throne of Mafia king from Dad. I sighed and went to the bathroom to take a shower. It took me exactly half an hour to get ready. As I went downstairs, I found Marco and Dad already at the breakfast table, waiting for me. “Good morning, princess,” Marco greeted me warmly as he walked up to me and pulled me into a tight hug. “Good morning,” I smiled, wrapping my arms around him briefly before we parted. We then settled at the table to have our first meal of the day. As always, all the dishes were my favorites. Suddenly, I heard a loud gunshot that shook me in my place. My heart pounded fast as the loud voice echoed from inside the mansion. I felt my heart come to my throat as I looked around. I couldn't stop myself from opening the door and stepping out of the car. The sound of another gunshot, followed by glass shattering, made me run inside the mansion. Because of my slippery feet, I almost slipped but managed to compose myself just in time. My surroundings blurred and turned dark as I ran toward the room where I had left Nikolai alone. The door was slightly ajar, so I pushed it open to find Nikolai with a gun in his hand, pressed against his stomach, his back facing me. "Nikolai!" I shouted. Slowly, he turned around. His eyes were filled with pain, such a deep pain that it tore my soul apart. Tears streamed down his cheeks, his eyes were bloodshot red, and his lower lip quivered.
