EVERLEIGH
The app I use to help me sleep at night was cut off way before I wanted to wake up. Using a white noise app was the only way I could get a full night's sleep without the nightmares returning.Samson laid with his head on my stomach, his ears perked up and his long bushy tail wagging. I rescued him as much as he rescued me. I was part of the K-9 unit and after I got hurt he was supposed to go to another handler. He became aggressive and uncontrollable with his new handler and therefore that made him a liability. The head of my unit knew I wasn't coming back, not after I lost Bryan. So they let us both retire peacefully.I swung my legs over the side of the bed testing the balance on my right leg. It still gives me problems sometimes, especially first thing in the morning and definitely when it rains. And unfortunately, it has been raining here for almost a week straight and is unseasonably cold in the mornings and blazing hot by noon.Mother nature needs to get her hormones under control. This is ridiculous!I made my way slowly to my bedroom door. Yeah, it was gonna be a bad day. My limp is a little more painful today than it has been. Hopefully a long extremely hot shower will help get me on my way to feeling better.I opened my bedroom door just enough to let Samson out.He can let himself out of his doggy door.Down the hall I could hear Gran's alarm go off as well. I knew I had at least a good twenty-five minutes to shower and dress before she was downstairs making breakfast.Gran made the best breakfasts. Growing up, my whole family lived in a small farming town several hours outside of the city. When Gran's sister, Auntie Sheila, lost her husband eight or so years ago she moved her business here to the heart of the city to be with her.Three years ago, some unexpected circumstances brought me here to the city as well. So, I moved in with my Gran. She had been trying for years to get me to come and help her in her floral shop. The building she owned was a little piece of heaven. The bottom floor was our floral shop and above that was our two-story apartment complete with a rooftop garden and a backyard oasis. It’s such a shame that a monstrosity of a Highrise was built next door. Gran’s shop, Edens Garden, was one of the only historic buildings left in this part of the city.I turned the shower off and wrapped the towel around myself and walked out of the bathroom and into my closet. The shower did wonders to relieve the aching of my hip.I shuffled through my closet looking for clothes so I could get my day started. It’s not like I have much more than t-shirts and jeans in my closet and there isn’t much to choose from at that. I have never been much for material possessions.Deciding on a simple light green shirt and a pair of distressed jean shorts, I quickly got dressed and made my way down the spiral staircase just in time for Gran to take a pan of biscuits out of the oven.“How did you know this was exactly what I needed today?” I asked as I took a stool at the bar in the open kitchen.“Oh, a grandmother knows…”“How bad was it?” I asked. I still have nightmares about my abuse when my hip hurts.Gran sighed heavily and looked at me with sad eyes. “I think it was one of the worst ones yet. Samson came and got me. We both sat with you for over an hour before it stopped.”She came around the big butcher block island and wrapped her arms around my shoulders, giving me a quick squeeze. “Now eat up, we have an emergency engagement party coming in soon and we need to get the order in by the end of the day. The party is this weekend.”We quickly finished our breakfast and cleaned up the kitchen in silence.Gran left before I did to get the shop opened. Nine o’clock on the dot every morning. We both had a routine that we stuck to religiously when the shop was open for business first thing every morning.I carefully walk out to the front sidewalk with a broom in my hand. The storm last night really made a mess of the front entrance. I swept up the storm debris, it didn’t take as long as I thought it would, which was good. I still didn’t have the sidewalk sign out yet.I checked my watch and decided that the front of the store was as good as it was going to get for the time being. I chucked the broom and dustpan back in the storage closet and was on my way back out with the sign when a fancy black SUV pulled into the private parking garage we had around the side of the building. What the hell?Gran always moved the delivery van to the front of the shop in the morning to make it easier to get in and out with deliveries.Since when did we offer VIP treatment? With the surge in gang violence, and by ‘gang’ I mean mafia involvement in honest businesses, it was only a matter of time before we were forced to submit to whichever asshole decides they want to strong arm a couple of women into paying for their services. We were supposed to be located in an area known as no man's land. But I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that it was too good to be true. The boundary lines were always shifting.I made my way to the office where I kept my gun. I still keep all of the necessary licensing to own and carry a gun.I also have a standing appointment twice a week at the local gun range to keep myself sharp.I grabbed my gun out of the desk drawer, ran back to the front of the store to lock the door.I could hear footsteps in the apartment above the shop. I took the back stairs two at a time, no easy feat for my short ass legs. The voices coming from the kitchen were hushed. It sounded like there were at least two different women and as many men in the room with Gran.I crept around the corner with my gun drawn and ready.Except…Instead of me getting the drop on them, they got the drop on me.The cool metal of the barrel of a gun was pressed directly against the back of my neck. I could feel a large hand reach around and take the gun out of my hands. He pushed me into the kitchen where two ladies and Gran were seated at the dining table with swatches and pictures spread out. Two other goons were milling around the living space, checking windows and opening all of the doors.Gran didn’t even look up when she spoke to the asshole with the gun to my head.“Oisin McAdams, if you wish to live another day, kindly take your hands off of my granddaughter.”What the fuck? She knows his name.“My apologies Mrs. Logan. I caught her sneaking up the stairs with a gun. I didn’t realize there was anyone else here.” I caught his slight Irish accent.Wait…he’s Irish.I took a closer look at the other men in the room as well as the two sophisticated women.Well dressed in tailored suits. Each man looked like he could be on the cover of GQ Magazine.Shit this isn’t good. The lady who I am assuming is the younger one's mother, turns in her chair.Double shit…. That’s Aoife Callaghan. Mother to the most ruthless crime family in the city. And she is in my kitchen.Oh Gran, what have you gotten us mixed up in…EVERLEIGHWe were almost done carrying all of the floral arrangements into the building's cargo elevator. Gran took the first elevator full up and I was waiting for her to come back down so I could load the rest. The elevator was located at the back of the parking garage and was used by employees of the restaurants and businesses in the building. There were several workers coming up from behind me. They were all dressed in uniforms like a catering service. I smiled at the one closest to me and pulled out my phone to scroll my social media while we waited for the elevator to come back down. The engagement party was on the eighteenth floor so it would take time for it to come back down. I was so lost in my phone that I almost didn’t hear part of their conversation. It’s not my fault that I’m nosy by nature.“....minutes to get in and get out. Call Vinny and tell him to meet us out front. This elevator is taking too long.”I made sure to keep staring at my phone. It’s a good thing
RONANOne minute I was just shooting the shit with the guys, going over security plans for my little sister's engagement party, and the next thing I saw, there was a girl on the floor of my private conference room kicking the shit out of some guy.It was obvious that he was the reason for the blood on her face and the panicked look in her eyes.My guys being my guys, jumped into action pulling the guy off of her. Brennan and Sean threw him in the opposite corner, giving Oisin and Tadgh the chance to fuck him up as well. We may be criminals, but the line is drawn at hurting women and children.Even from my seat at the head of the table I can see this girl is a beauty. I’m instantly hit with the need to care and protect this girl at all costs.I don’t know why but before I can put much thought into my actions, I’m kneeling on the floor in front of her. I take back everything I said about her being a beauty. Those words aren’t enough to describe this little redhead at my feet. She’s fu
EVERLEIGHThe ride to the hospital was uncomfortable to say the least. I was ushered back down to the private section of the parking garage and into a black SUV with dark tinted windows. The one he called Connor was in the front driving while I was stuck in the backseat with the devil of the city. How could someone so evil be so devastatingly handsome. And big.Jesus, was this man huge. He has to be at least six and a half feet tall.He sat staring at me with his head cooked to the side like he was memorizing every detail. Taking up most of the space in the back, making it hard to breathe. It wasn't hot per say, but his intense gaze was giving the butterflies in my stomach butterflies of their own."So Everleigh, how long have you been working with your grandmother?" He asked me. Is he serious right now? Like he hasn’t investigated all of the vendors that have anything to do with this engagement party.“Listen, cut the bullshit, I’m only allowing you to drop me off at the hospital.
EVERLElGHWhen we finally got back to my apartment, it was almost time for Gran to go to her bowling club. Tuesday night was bingo, and Friday nights were set aside for bowling. Sometimes, I would go with her because she's just that cool. But not tonight.No. Tonight I would be Iocked in my apartment with the most dangerous man in the city. What made this man dangerous was not that he was a cold-blooded killer. Oh no, it was that I was drawn to him like a moth to a flame. It scared the hell out of me. And it excited me all at the same time. Why did that excite me?Was it because he was dangerous, or was it because he was drop-dead gorgeous.I very much think it's the latter. This man could do irreparable damage to my mind, body, and soul.Ronan sat and talked to Gran for a few minutes, just to fill her in on what the doctor said. The ease with which they talked to each other suggested they have known one another for longer than I thought. My suspicions were confirmed when something Gr
EVERLEIGHRonan left me in the bathroom at my insistence to go order our food. I told him I was more than happy to cook, but he said not to over exert myself so soon after an accident. The tub was filling up, and I was on my hands and knees looking under the sink cabinet for the bag of bubble salts. Somehow, it had gotten shoved all the way to the back, and it was going to be a stretch getting it. Whoever built this bathroom decided on extra deep cabinets, and my short arms sometimes struggled to reach the back.My fingertips brushed the top of the bag right at the same time my back decided it had had enough and locked up. It’s not the first time it has happened, and it probably won’t be the last either. But it usually requires some form of assistance, and I’m not sure I want to ask for his help just yet. While I am dressed in my silk robe, I am completely naked underneath. If I were to ask for his help now he would no doubt get a perfect look at all of what it is I have to offer a
RONANI’ve been sitting outside of the bathroom door for so long I’ve lost track of the time. Before I came in to rescue her yet again, I called Rhyon and asked if he would come over and cook for her. Since we all live in the same penthouse, he does all of the cooking anyway. He says he doesn’t trust anyone else when, in truth, he's just like every other stuck-up, hot shot chef. But unlike most chefs in the industry, he has a natural gift when it comes to cooking. He’s the only one of the four of us brothers that can cook. Rogan and I can get by okay, but Rannon can’t boil water to save his life. I should have thought sitting on the hardwood floor through a little bit better before I actually did it. Honestly, I didn’t think that I would be sitting here for this long. I figured she would be done by now.“Everything okay in there, love?” I had to stop myself from turning and looking in the door. I heard her sigh and drop what I was assuming was her hand back into the water.“I’m not y
RONAN"Oh. My. God. What is that smell?"It took me a solid forty-five minutes to convince Everleigh to lay down on her bed so I could give her a body massage and rub this pain relief shit on her."Just relax, it smells like death, but I promise when you wake up in the morning you won't even know you got tossed around like a rag doll."She groaned and grumbled about the smell for a few more minutes before she finally relaxed. It's a good thing I opened the windows and balcony door, this shit could peel the paint off of walls if a room wasn't well ventilated. She was wearing an oversized t-shirt and a pair of well worn boxer briefs. At least that's what they looked like to me. I may be well versed in female anatomy but female fashion is a whole nother ball game.I start at her shoulders, gently massaging the mixture into her skin. She keeps her face buried in a pillow to try to hide the foul odor. If I could, I would do the same. Lucky for me though, I’ve used this stuff enough that
EVERLEIGHThe warmth of the sunshine on my face woke me from the best night's sleep I've had in years. Hell, the best sleep of my entire life to date!I slowly opened my eyes, hoping the bright light wouldn't give me an instant migraine. When I was confident that the light wouldn’t gouge my eyes out, I attempted a stretch. I fully expected to feel some discomfort at the very least, but there was none. At all… Even my hip was pain free. Whatever was in that vile smelling concoction worked some kind of magic.I rolled to the side, slightly disappointed that there wasn't a gorgeous God with chocolate brown hair and beautiful blue eyes to greet me this morning.I give my body one final stretch before I throw the covers back and attempt to get out of bed.I could smell breakfast cooking downstairs and the low murmur of voices. Gran must be entertaining Ronan. That gives me the opportunity to shower off the faint odor of that nasty shit he rubbed on my body last night. Thoughts of last n
EVERLEIGH The atrium was decorated perfectly. The decorations mirrored the park's decorations right down to my exact favorite color of coral. Ronan led me through the crowd to his waiting family. Aoife and Rowan were first to welcome me to their family, followed by his father. Ronan was off to the side talking to Rogan when strong arms grabbed me from behind and spun me in a circle before putting me back down. The action startled me to the point that I let out an involuntary shriek. The thoughts running through my head before I realized it was Rhyon, had me in fight or flight mode. When he put me down, he planted a wet, sloppy kiss directly on my mouth. To say I was shocked is an understatement. But it took everything I had not to laugh when he was chastised by all of his brothers, his father and even his mother. But I finally lost it when Rowen started poking fun at him. When she kicked off her shoes and took off running with
RONANThe staff that put together Everleigh’s vision on such short notice are definitely getting a bonus out of this. It's perfect. Every little detail is just how she described it.She just wasn't expecting it to be outdoors. When she hijacked Sean's earpiece and I heard the nervousness in her voice, I almost lost it myself. The way she said that she needed to talk to me almost had me in a panic attack. I've never had a panic attack before in my life. But then she slid her hand in mine and told me she loved me. It took everything I had to let her walk away. I almost went full on caveman and threw her over my shoulder and hightailed it back to the penthouse. Rannon bitched and moaned the whole way over here about having to escort Adrianna down the aisle to stand beside Everleigh. He claims that she gets on his nerves but I know better. I see the way he looks at her. And she's not shy about the looks she's been giving him. The little vulture. But that's not the thing that has me wo
EVERLEIGH I stood in my room looking at my reflection in the mirror of the walk in closet. Adrianna, Rowan and Gran were all fussing about with my hair and dress. The row of pearl buttons along the back were a nice touch at the time but standing here having to have help to get in and out of the dress is for the birds.Ronan and his brother's left about an hour ago to head to the venue we will be getting married at. I still can't believe that Ronan wants to make it a surprise. Surprises like this are my least favorite. They make me anxious. I like my surprises to be spontaneous, like the day Ronan took me to his ranch. A soft knock at the door had me holding my breath until my brother popped his head in. It's still surreal to think that I have a family other than Adrie and Gran."Ladies, can we have the room for a minute?" Aleksandar asked with a slight smile. Rowan and Adrianna gave me one last look over before they left the
EVERLEIGH Ronan was in the kitchen when I came down for the day. He sat at the island scrolling through a tablet with a mug in his hand. He winked at me and his sinfully sexy smirk stopped me in my tracks.“Morning.”It was just one word and my ovaries were already working overtime. Why was his slight Irish accent so sexy? Everything about this man screams sex. And he’s just sitting in a pair of loose shorts, bare chest and tattoos exposed, pretending to be innocent. Does he know the effect his rich, smoky voice and those piercing blue eyes have on me?The fluttering in my chest and the heat spreading throughout my body were testament to what one look from Ronan Callaghan could do to a girl. The way that cocky bastard smirks at me lets me know he knows exactly the effect it has on me.We haven't so much as shared a bed in almost two weeks at this point. But that didn't stop him from his shameless flirting. He would catch me in a corner, get me all hot and bothered, and just leave
RONAN It's been almost a week since the incident at the club and we are nowhere closer to figuring out this mystery than we were the day Everleigh fell through the conference room doors. When I brought her home from the clinic I put her in one of the guest bedrooms. Whatever that asshole injected her with didn't come up on any of Rogans scans. Whatever that shit was fucked her up good. She was out for three and a half days. 'Out' is putting it very loosely. She had vivid nightmares. Rogan stayed with her the first night and she talked to him through the hell that was going on in her sleep. The second night was so bad I had to go down and get Samson from Eden. But the third night… that one almost broke me. Maksimillian stayed with her that night. She told him exactly everything they did to her in such detail that it made me sick to my stomach when I watched the video back. In all the years that I have known him, I've never se
RONAN I broke the kiss almost as quickly as I had started it. She looked up at me with her big blue eyes and I melted. I am beyond pissed right now, but I don't need to take it out on her. I can feel the slight tremble run through her body, but I don't know if it's because she's scared or turned on.I take a step back, but not before I fix her with a blank stare and wrap my fingers lightly around her throat."If another man touches you, I will end him." I said, the dark tone in my voice emphasized by the slight squeeze of my fingers. Her eyes went wide only for a second before something else took over. I saw the look in her eyes for what it really was. She fucking likes it when I manhandled her!"Watch out for Luciano. He knows you're mine and wants to make a game of it." If I wasn't so pissed at the situation I may have actually laughed at the look on her face. "You know him?" She asked incredulously. "I would hate to have to kill my best friend." I was really having trouble k
EVERLEIGHSEVERAL HOURS EARLIERI stood in the walk-in closet and just stared. It’s only been an hour or so since we went down and met with Rogan, so I know I haven't fallen asleep and missed a day or ten. What Ronan referred to as my side of the closet was relatively empty when we had left. Now I’m standing in a fully stocked closet. Did I fall through some kind of alternate dimension? Does clothing multiply like Tribbles? I ran my hand along the tops of the hangers, taking in the feel of the different fabrics against my skin. Silk and Satin.Chiffon and Lace. And why does he keep sending Oisin after clothes for me? The last dress I wore was almost a disaster.I stood back and took all of it in. It was all organized by categories. Sleepwear, casual, dinner, formal… There were more clothes here than I would wear in a year.I found a silk robe hanging with the sleep wear. I quickly undressed and slid the robe on, letting the cool fabric kiss my heated skin. I leafed through the hang
RONAN The club was just getting up and running when we pulled into the underground parking garage. I left Everleigh at the penthouse with Oisin and Rhyon. Oisin was supposed to be helping her pick out something to wear. I'm only hoping I stressed the word 'appropriate' enough for his devious little mind to comprehend. There is no way in hell I want a replay of the fashion disaster that he picked for her for the engagement party. Actually, I take that back. That dress was sexy as fuck. And I know that I got a flash of her pussy a time or two so it makes me wonder if anyone else did too. And if I ever find out… I’ll kill them all.I followed Rannon up to my office as Connor and Brennan waited for the twins and Lucian to arrive. I have a few questions for them regarding Everleigh’s scars and I am hoping they can give me the answers that I need.Rannon unlocked the door and pushed it open. I went in and turned the light on while my brother made use of the mini bar. I stood at the wall
EVERLEIGH It didn't take as much convincing Gran to leave the apartment as I thought it would. But why would it? If Ronan is correct, then Gran has been putting off moving in with his grandfather for quite some time now. I can't believe she didn't tell me. It's not that I would have thought any less of her. She never does anything for herself. I don't even remember the last time she took a vacation that wasn't longer than a weekend away. Come to think of it, I wonder if those weekends away were with Patrick?I never knew my grandfather, he died before I was born, and what little I did know of him was that he was a mean son of a bitch. So what if Gran has a weekly romp in the sheets with Ronan's grandfather. They're both consenting adults. How is that any worse than what happened in my bedroom this morning?Gran and I rode the elevator up to the twentieth floor. Patrick's apartment was on this floor along with Rowan's. Ronan rang the doorbell to his grandfather's apartment and the t
